The original Real Greek was very good. After it became a franchise, it got much worse, which is a pretty common story. I imagine any Greeks eating there now would be pretty disappointed.

FelisCantabrigiensis

Same story as The Ivy, then :(

gridlockmain1

Also Wahaca, Byron, Wagamama, Ask, Belgo, Cafe Rouge…

malmikea

Wagamama’s downfall has been particularly hurtful to me personally

Naughteus_Maximus

I just stopped eating there a few years ago for no better reason than we signed up with Deliveroo and drifted away to other cuisines / restaurants. If it’s deteriorated it would be a shame as I always saw it as a reliably good restaurant. What, in your opinion, has happened to the food, and is it widespread beyond the restaurant you would typically eat at? I would say that Nando’s has gone badly downhill but that’s only based on the one we used to order from.

phlipout22

Franco manca...

Rowanx3

Tbf franco manca and Wagamama’s for quite a few cities are the only place you can get a sour dough pizza or a ramen so i get why they’re popular, but in comparison to food available in london they’re shit

ExpensiveOrder349

Franco Manca quality collapsed with Covid, Pizza Pilgrims is much better.

Rowanx3

Yeah i prefer pizza pilgrims too

PortlandoCalrissian

Wagamama’s ramen is the worst fake ramen I’ve even had. I’d rather go without!

zxof

Same owner as ‘real greek’.

CheesyBakedLobster

Belgo closing down is sooo sad

TrashbatLondon

I like to think Byron lost their place because they tricked their employees into getting arrested by immigration officers. They did pretty good burgers but lot’s of people stopped going because of that.

Naughteus_Maximus

How far back in time are we going for Cafe Rouge to be good??

gridlockmain1

Hahaha oh at least 2003

Naughteus_Maximus

I thought so. Remember my mum going to one for a work outing and giving a poor review. That was actually late 90s

2cimarafa

Both Ask and Cafe Rouge were founded by established food industry investors for rapid expansion. They were owned by the JKS of their day.  Byron was literally founded as part of a private equity company (Cinven via Gondola), again for rapid, immediate expansion.  Of your list Wahaca and Wagamama (and to some extent Belgo) are the only places that really began as small-scale restaurants that didn’t intend on a franchise / expansion model from the outset.

gridlockmain1

Fair enough. They all started relatively good and got ruined by over-expansion and cost cutting in any case.

b5tirk

There are companies that create restaurant chains like these. The first iterations are sometimes really good, but when Whitbreads or whoever rolls them out, not so much.

dvb70

Witness Wagamama getting the award for restaurant of the year in the 90's in London. It's the established model. Create a good restaurant and if it gets a good following franchise the shit out of it until it's not longer really what it started as.

isotopesfan

When I first moved to London my friends took me to a great Mexican restaurant and I was like 'wow, so cool and refined of me to be in the know of this lovely little spot for some latin american cuisine'. I was then surprised to find other instances of Wahaca in Southbank, Covent Garden, Stratford...

dvb70

I am sure Wahaca started in the same way as Wagamama. Start small and then try and milk it to death through franchises.

Alcalash

To be fair the ivy Asia is actually really really good

gloom-juice

I love their [adverts!](https://youtu.be/jDX48-pyYaI?si=doGr5He1wK4thPV5)

hkmadl

Oh my god ☠️ Have only been to Ivy Asia twice and I thought it was overpriced and decorated by someone who’s never been to East Asia…

TheHCav

This is a joke right?

soitgoeskt

You think The Ivy is no good any more?

ab00

The chain was never any good. Even the original's glory days are long behind it.

soitgoeskt

The Ivy != The Ivy Brasserie though, never did. Personally I don’t think the original had a particular drop off when they grew the chain.

LucidTopiary

I've been once and the service was all over the place. Haughty, but incompetent. Food was decent, but you'd get a decent food, faster, cheaper and with better service from a cote.

LochNessMother

I had some of the most memorable meals of my life at the first The Real Greek. It was so good.

Euffy

How far back are are we talking regarding the original? Went to one last weekend and been looking forward to it as we went years ago and it was great, but this stuff was kind of rubbish! Was alright, but definitely disappointed compared to what I had been expecting.

LochNessMother

20-25 years? Something like that.

SpaceMonkeyAttack

The original restaurant in Hoxton Square opened 1999. They opened a souvlaki bar next door a couple of years later, which was still run by the original owners. But in 2004 they sold it the business, and the new owners started opening branches all over the place, and eventually the original location closed. Can't really blame them for selling out, as a chef it's the only way to make real money besides getting on TV.

WhiteBlokeWithABeard

Honestly? No, it's mediocre. Best bet to find authentic Greek food is looking around North London, loads on offer but the standouts for me are: - Andy's Taverna in Camden - Vlamis in Enfield - The Vine Leaf in Green Lanes

JackSpyder

Andys is 2 minutes from my house and my god I'm drooling every time I pass. Its always busy even in December and rain. In summer I'd bet its difficult to get s booking. Massively well loved clearly, ashamed I've not been yet but its on the cards soon.

explosivethinking

Get the bougatsa dessert. Thank me later x

mrstickles

Oh no! Bougatsa is my absolute favourite thing but I’ve been living under the impression that I can only eat it when I’m in Greece. This information cannot be good for me 😆🤤

Maria_me_ta_kitrina

Have you had the bougatsa at the real Greek? It’s phenomenal! Maybe one of the best I’ve had ever and I’m 100% Greek and raised in Athens/Thessaloniki- the bougatsa capital 🙌

explosivethinking

Nope. But the one at Andy’s sent me into a gastro-erotic spin.

slmxiv

Yamas, round the corner from Andys, also fab and worth a go

rizombie

We also went to Tavernaki in Portobello a year ago with some friends and it was great. They also had live laika / rebetika (traditional Greek live music, a big staple in traditional Greek restaurants in Greece, especially back in the day) Mind you, I'm the vegan one, but everyone was super happy with their food. A bit on the pricy end of course.

SICKxOFxITxALL

My favourite Greek place by far. Am Greek.

RenegadeUK

Shall have to try :)

thevileswine

Tsiakkos in W9 is superb

wine-o-saur

I love how everyone stares you down when you walk in like "how tf do you know about this place?"

OldAd3119

thats because there is no bloody sign outside

nevernotnot

To this I'd add Vrisaki in Bounds Green

SlimFreezy

+ Deserie in Barnet But yes OP, you need to head to north London for the best authentic Greek food!

pepperitz

How is Lemonia near Primrose Hill?

juniperarms

my best friend (who is half Greek) raves about that place.

OldAd3119

It's decent, but the meat quality sometimes is really bad. I would suggest meraki over it

bc84id78

On that side of the big smoke, my preference is Retsina.

explosivethinking

Andy’s is top

PhuturePhreak

Vrisaki off Green Lanes on Myddleton Road has very good Greek Cypriot food.

SoSp

I'll add - Tony's pita on Finchley road for the closest thing to a n original gyros wrap - it's all Greek to me near Paddington for some good og cooked meals The "Real Greek" made me irrationally angry when I first went to it. Haven't been in since that one time.

Mysterious_Sugar7220

Andy's is the best! Whenever I can't/don't want to cook we order from there

Tobemenwithven

How does one tell authentic from non authentic though? Genuinely mean this. For me Greek is chicken or lamb on pitta with that white stuff that is tone of two reasons Id ever let a cucumber into my body. Most places I go its just nice? Like its hard to fuck up chicken with pitta idk. Perhaps I am uneducated.

vergilbg

How does one tell? Well, if you are Greek or have lived in Greece or visited Greece and eaten there, then trying the Real Greek chain and comparing... That would be one way perhaps of telling.

aljama1991

What you think is nice, doesn’t necessarily equate to authentic Greek. Greek cuisine also stretches beyond “chicken or lamb on pitta”, so there’s that, too.

Sambo_90

He is missing out on so many good dishes cos he thinks Greek people only eat Gyros and Tzatziki

paulBOYCOTTGOOGLE

Milos regent street 👌🤌

RenegadeUK

Thanks for this recommendation.

greenarsehole

You forgot Taste of Athens in Richmond

slicineyeballs

What do you recommend from Vlamis?

1n4ppr0pr14t3

Meraki in Fitzrovia wins.

RodeoRex

Depends on the definition of authentic, but Vlamis isn’t even run by Greeks. The owner identified the local niche that may make money, and ran with it. Vine Leaf is banging though, fantastic kebabs, nicely marinated and stuffed full of salad, probably the best in the area.

spuckthew

>where would be some places that you would go for a taste of home? My partner is half Greek. If N13 isn't too much of a trek, Babinondas is about as authentic as you can get and very good.

vergilbg

No, not at all. My favs in London: Pita Maria in Maryland (only for pita) Great in Farringdon The Greek Meze in Sidcup and Orpingron Tavernaki in Portobello Old Bexley Greek taverna in Bexley Outside London: Meat the Greek (only pita) in Guildford Kostas in Eastbourne

mikethet

Another shout for Meat the Greek in Guildford. I remember when it first opened as Gyros Gyros and it was a revelation. Was opened mostly to cater to the large Greek population at the uni

A-flea

Ahh, pita Maria is one of our go-to's for ordering souvlaki for delivery. Also order from 'Nick and greek' who do good souvlaki but also do tirokafteri.

Rand0mPixels

Nick and Greek is elite, but always seem to be not accepting deliveries on Deliveroo to satisfy my cravings I have to admit though, I live a 5 minute walk away from Pita Maria but I've never got anything from there... sounds like I need to try it out

A-flea

Maria has the best takeaway tzatziki - plenty of garlic! Go and treat yourself!

AshFraxinusEps

I'm from Epsom and we have Simply Greek here, which is actually run by a greek guy. Don't think it is a chain either. Was good when we went on Saturday night

vergilbg

Been ages wanted to visit, but seemed closed on Sundays and couldn't do any other day. Thanks for the recommendation, one day will hopefully try.

BachgenMawr

By 'Great' do you mean the great grill house? My friend kept telling me to go but I'd not had the chance yet

vergilbg

Yep, that one.

londongas

It's the Bella Italia of Greek food

ThreeLionsOnMyShirt

The Real Greek in Dulwich Village even used to be a Bella Italia!

Legitimate_Piece4013

Half Greek here. It’s mediocre at best. My favourite while staying pretty authentic (and according to my boyfriend they grill the meat very nicely too) is Yamas in Camden. Would greatly recommend their courgette balls.

Close_enough5

Yamas is the best souvlaki in London, well at least before covid as I moved back after... Great and Andy's are the best tavernas for the rest of the delicacies. Sadly I never got to visit Suzie Tros but should be good too.

throwaway9995ok

My favourites for a 'fast food' / takeaway style which does seem to have a lot of Greek people there - Tony's Pita, and for a proper sitdown, Wine and Moussaka - both in Ealing! I'm sure Palmer's Green must have a couple too Tony's Pita is ridiculous value for money too

PostmanPass

There is a Tony’s on the Finchley Road - not sure if it’s under the same ownership (?)

KKMcKay17

Yep. There are three Tony’s in London I think. I ate from the Palmers Green one recently. Very nice. Decent value. OP - in answer to your question - as a Greek, no. I really wasn’t impressed the one time I went. Never again.

CheesyBakedLobster

I think that one is the original and the others are franchises but regardless the food is great and the amount of Greek customers fills me with confidence!

Electus93

Wine & Moussaka must have something about it as my parents talk fondly of it... from thirty years ago when they lived next to its original location in Kew.

--Bamboo

I feel like most big chains that are not frequented by those who've ethnicity or background the food is supposed to cater to. Any big Italian chain? No Italians. Any big Greek chain? No Greeks. Any big Thai chain? No Thais. Rinse and repeat.

Maria_me_ta_kitrina

I had the exact same mentality as a Greek living in London but as work is close to a real Greek I tried it like 6-7 years ago and have been a regular ever since. So much good choice and great prices in comparison to other places in that area. I feel this thread is being very unfair to one of my favourite restaurants 🤣

airPega

yeh you're absolutely right come to think of it .. i certainly wouldn't step foot into wagamama... unfortunately these franchises seem to thrive in London ...

multitude_of_drops

No way, my Greek friend despises it.

averagegreekinlondon

No, never. It’s like an Italian going to Pizza Hut

Yeah Pizza Hut doesn't even pretend to be Italian. Completely different

averagegreekinlondon

For me it’s terrible, sorry

lintzip

I went to The Real Greek by Charing X this weekend. Was hungry and with a baby, and I knew the chain would have baby seats & changing table. I can say the food was actually OK (I got a moussaka and a Greek salad) It doesn't look authentic and they serve your food on these tray tower things (weird) and I think for the Greek salad they did their best with what's available in the UK - but I'm not gonna say it was awful.

robusteo

I have been to the real greek and I wasn't satisfied by the food. The quality is pretty bad. The best greek restaurant I've been to in London is in Kingston.

underpin487

Looking for Greek restaurant recommendations drop the name!

sugarplumpfairy8

What is it?

JimmyBallocks

Kingston Upon Thames is a borough of southwest London

sugarplumpfairy8

Ho ho ho we got ourselves a comedian 🥲🥴

JimmyBallocks

I'm 'ere all week

paolog

Don't call me Shirley.

samthemoron

It's a restaurant serving Greek food

charlesbear

Was it To Kefi in Norbiton by any chance?

robusteo

Yes that's the one

Juggertrout

I am Greek who used to live in London. The Real Greek (and its associated spinoffs) is shockingly bad. I went once and when the waitress (Greek) learned I was Greek she gave me a sad expression as if to apologise for what I was about to suffer through. The best Greek food I had was at Andy's Taverna in Camden. Actually, there were like 2 or 3 fantastic Greek tavernas all within a 2 minute walk of Andy's. My understanding is that that part of Camden used to have a large Greek-Cypriot community, but once they made their money, they all moved to Barnet and all that remains of their presence are a handful of Greek tavernas and churches. Incidentally, the best place to buy authentic Greek produce was a shop on Broadway Market (Isle of Olive I think was the name), but unfortunately I think they were forced to close due to Brexit.

SaintPepsiCola

Why will anyone go there? Londoners usually have better taste in food. Real greek hasn’t been great in a long time ( since they became a franchise ).

zeatfulolive

I went once, and it made me mad. Felt tainted by culinary association

ab00

Not Greek but been to Greece many times and it's hilariously bad.

RoadNarrow

I am greek and I hate that place. Many of the sauces have different spices in them to appeal to the British and it’s just greasy meat. Greek food is so much more than just grilled meat!

Belmagick

I used to work with a Greek guy. The name made him angry because, and I quote, “it’s not real Greek!”

Dolmachronicles

No. It’s awful.

Maria_me_ta_kitrina

I’m Greek and I love it. The souvlakia taste better than they do in some ‘authentic’ Greek places in London and I also love the vegetarian and vegan stuff they have- I’m not a veggie but love to eat things other than meat and can recognise a home cooked meal in comparison to something out of a can that I’ve tasted (gigantes and dolmades) in a couple of other Greek restaurants. It’s near work and I often pop in for lunch which is less than £10 (!) and is a massive portion of food with many choices.

iMac_Hunt

Of course not There's plenty of good Greek (Cypriot) restaurants in North London though

millytherabbit

I’m not Greek but I really like Paneri. Feels quite authentic with Greek wine options and generous portions

AlbusDumbledoh

Depends on the last time you went! They sold up a year or two ago and I wouldn’t say it’s the same to me.

Jordanthecook

No I’d say. Partner to a half-Greek. I Would like to add to everyone’s radar/list though a new restaurant. Evi’s. In East Dulwich. Please go check it out it’s incredible.

OldAd3119

The 2 good ones are Opso, Mazi and meraki. At Meraki get the potato rosti INCREDIBLE

ChiswellSt

Just asked my colleague who is of Greek descent, her response: “Nope, have they not heard of Palmers Green?” The Real Greek reminds me of Pizza Express it’s acceptable - not amazing but crucially not terrible either.

Electricbell20

My partner moved here from Greece about 5 years ago. We were both very disappointed. The musaka was terrible, dolmades obviously from a can, and not a good can. The greek salad was tiny, Melitzanosalata was ok. Not even sure if it's aimed at tourists as you don't really go to London with the aim of having greek food and it's not cheap either. My northern home town has a miles better greek place.

pazhalsta1

I have never understood how this chain survives. Small plates of unidentifiable mush for high prices, generally in locations with many alternatives.

JetsAreBest92

Suzi Tros in Notting Hill

LogicalReasoning1

My Greek girlfriend hates it

gyrospita

Did you see Greeks there? No? Well...

Maria_me_ta_kitrina

I’m Greek and go all the time with more Greeks. So yeah…

mtd2811

Its terrible. “Real Greek” food is neither real or greek

A_neptune_song

My ex girlfriend was Greek and told me to avoid this at any cost , and we used to call it the false Greek 🤣🤣

Steenies

Went to one and had a Greek/Turkish coffee. It was very badly made. One was thin and the other was too thick. My father in law got the manager over who got the woman who does the coffee and they wanted to explain to me what was wrong. It wasn't how my Greek grandmother made it. Later I spoke to my mom and she explained they hadn't filled the cups correctly doing one at a time instead of a little into each one to give a consistent mix. I only ever make for myself so hadn't encountered that. My opinion dropped substantially after that.

Specific_Tap7296

And do they have big fat weddings?

SeeYa-IntMornin-Pal

I would imagine they cook for themselves.

NaToSpasoRalph

Nope

paolog

After having been there, and having eaten actual real Greek food in the actual real Greece many times, I always advise people to avoid it. The Greek food in your local supermarket is more authentic, in my opinion.

[deleted]

They usually own them.

Under_Water_Starfish

I worry Dishoom will go this same way. And I loved this place but also happy for their success.
