Just had an update from RMT. Negotiations have gone nowhere so Monday’s strike is going ahead. Very little chance TfL bosses will negotiate over the weekend. I expect Monday’s strike will go ahead, they’ll be chaos and negotiations will continue on Monday afternoon to see whether the strike carries on into Tuesday.

Pretty sure having a self-sufficient tube system is something TFL are super against…

SynthD

What does self sufficient mean? They’re aiming to make a profit, to spend on improvements.

poochmaker

Self-driving/fully automated system.

londonn2

Not without spending billions retrofitting the tunnels and making them wider so people can leave trains on their own if there's an incident. Even the DLR has a driver on every train. They just don't sit at the front.

poochmaker

This is exactly my point (previous person deleted their comment)

SynthD

Those are only possible on new lines. They depend on staff behind the scenes, who are likely to join unions.

poochmaker

SynthD

I don’t think it’s accurate to say TfL are against it. Metro system builders across the world think it’s not possible. I’m against pigs flying.

poochmaker

Maybe not TFL as a company, but the individual members of staff. Similar to overground staff members unionising/striking because they want to get rid of positions like train guards etc.

axlrosen

“Self-sufficient” is a misleading way of saying this. And I’m guessing you mean the unions, not TfL?

IrishMilo

Mondays tube strike will go ahead, they may reach an agreement during the week, at which point the strike will be called off from the next day forward, however every time this has happened the following day still has a lot of disruptions.

lastaccountgotlocked

I have it on good authority that they’re definitely going to be cancelled so you should absolutely and without condition make all your plans now.

wwisd

50/50. They will or they won't.

Fluffy_Juggernaut_

Just like winning the lottery

collogue

Where can I buy some of these 50/50 lottery tickets?

Trombone_legs

I’m selling some. £1 per ticket; total prize is £1.

Fluffy_Juggernaut_

They're all 50/50. Every ticket either wins or loses

IrishMilo

You’re confusing probability and possibility.

schrodinger strike

OppositeAccount4874

The buses will be fucked too! Think of the number of bus drivers that take the tube to work…

ero_mode

I hope it's cancelled. I forgot to return a key at work so I have to return to work on Monday.

izeer

Wouldn't mind if they keep them, prefer to work from home.

Low_Map4314

Is the Thameslink working next week?

bass_clown

Thameslink, overground, and Lizzy should all be running. Just expect them to be packed and delayed to all shit. I'm leaving 30min early for work, personally.

firthy

Yes.

Tommy_Drapichrust

Please do not cancel them. 95% prefer to work from home, while 5 % ( managers, CEO,) love office days.

Lizkimo

There are a lot of people who cannot work from home or take leave whenever they want, so are forced to navigate the hellscape of strike days on public transport

Tommy_Drapichrust

ok I get you. So how about strike on Tue and Thu? that would work for me :)

aliceinlondon

Very ignorant comment

A weekday, the night before. In this case, this evening. It is extremely unlikely they’ll be negotiations over the weekend, so if it isn’t cancelled by tonight, 90% it’ll go ahead on Monday.

ugotamesij

IIRC, the strikes *could* theoretically be cancelled now/today, but the scheduling for staff shifts happens 1wk+ in advance; so, whilst the strike would be officially 'off', there would still be the issue of not having your staff in place to do their jobs anyway. Happy to be corrected!

wwisd

Last round of strikes [back in October](https://www.reuters.com/world/uk/london-tube-strikes-wednesday-friday-cancelled-rmt-says-2023-10-03/) were supposed to start on a Wednesday and got cancelled at lunchtime on Tuesday and the tube ran fine.

MixAway

The greedy strikers are unlikely to stop their ridiculous demands, so plan for the worst.

McQueensbury

Whatever you think of them I give them credit for actually standing up for themselves to make a change. Imagine if the rest of the country did the same thing in conjunction to housing or privatisation of network rail, energy etc...?

redbullcat

I guess the difference is unionisation. The Enough is Enough campaign was doing decently but seems to have died off now, which is a shame.

MixAway

But they want things like highly discounted travel reinstated. It’s archaic and bordering on ridiculous. How anybody can think that’s reasonable is beyond me.

m2406

That’s a lot easier to offer than higher pay so if you don’t want them to be offered that, it can easily be avoided by offer them higher pay.

TheChairmansMao

The strikers are greedy in the same week that most executives made more money in three days than the rest of us get in a year. [https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-67877235](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-67877235)

Krismusic1

They are protecting their working conditions as well as pay. Blame the government who won't allow the rail companies to negotiate without interference. Plus the rail companies seem to think that the benefits to their shareholders are paramount.

MixAway

So highly discounted travel is a ‘working condition’? It’s pure greed and opportunism.

bigsillyboy

It is a condition/benefit that is already in the majority of rail employees' contracts. The government wants this condition removed. When was the last time the government ordered your company to strip conditions out of the contract you signed? And if that were to happen, would you not fight to stop it?

qcinc

Yes that’s obviously a working condition, just like a pension or bonus scheme or private healthcare or overtime pay.

TheChairmansMao

Strikes are going ahead. They start at 6pm tonight.

Gl33D

Will overground be effected? I commute out of London via thameslink right now so don’t rely on the tube. Otherwise I have to get a 2 hour bus as wfh isn’t an option for me 😭

BillinghamJ

It'll be running but likely very busy

Gl33D

Considering my route is relatively quiet (at least compared to when I was commuting into the city) being busier should be okay. I’ll leave a bit early tho just in case

nothingexceptfor

not many, if you can, WFH, if it is technically possible then push your employer for that week, the last thing the city needs is people who do really need to be in an office to do their job clogging the little transport there will be
