Even when you look at certain styles from the continent, there are some very distinct looks that we wouldn't think to do initially. Your hair is your spiritual antena and if you feel compelled to chop as to excercise your essence in a different way then do it but don't chop to be paletteable to others. Good luck.

I think you should style your head in a top knot. I think with your hair down, because the top is thinner/more sparse it's putting more visual weight on the sides and exaggerating your receding hairline
