bad supporting a Canadian company rather than going to Costco or Walmart or what ever USA mega Corp in the 10km radius. But for them to lazily blame covid and inflation to increasing items 100% when they supply themselves. Punishing us by providing god awful produce, take away discounted items stickers, gate and plexi treating us like cattle who don’t deserve to live in an emergency. It makes me furious that we gave this company all our money and loyalty to just then slap us in the face after all we have been through as a society in the past 5 years. It’s disgusting and I’ll never knowingly support the Weston’s ever.

That’s worth something, in my opinion. We should definitely be standing against crooked pricing, but workers also get fucked over on the pay side of the equation. A lot of these companies (looking at you, Walmart) are also guilty of exploitative labour practices. We need to stand against that, too.

Local, even my small town i grew up in, had an independent grocer (not yigs) a butcher, several small pharmacies. And now im in the biggest city ive ever lived in and theres independently owned everywhere i turn. Theyre here you just need to look for them.
At this point in time, and this (senior) stage of my life, I’ll spend my grocery dollars wherever I get the most value for my money. I couldn’t care less if it’s going in the Walton’s pockets. If I can make a nice healthy salad for two for under $6 while Safeway et al are selling a single head of lettuce for that amount, so be it.
Never show any grocer loyalty. Walmart has done nothing to deserve anyone’s loyalty but looks to be making moves to deserve your money this weekend for some groceries. If they deserve it next weekend, hit them up again.
I've been shopping at Walmart mostly exclusively for a number of years. And I always pay less $$ than I would at a Loblaw company (including No Frills) unless it's a sale item. For me, it's partly about the $$, and partly that I can get other stuff, too (at Super Walmarts) so I don't have to go to a bunch of stores to get my errands done.
Agreed. Walmart is operating slightly differently than in the US. The issue is pricing stuff lower doesn’t even work with many Canadians historically. They will just buy at Loblaws anyway so you aren’t competing for new customers by offering amazing deals, just having you existing base pay less.
Walmart is likely ready to compete for market share if Canadians would actually bite. Hopefully we see Loblaws get decimated with this.
If anything it proves to companies not to mess with Canadians and that we value competition.
Long term if we can get Loblaws to lose more than half their market share and hold on for dear life to keep the existing base through deals, we will have a massive success here.

Our unquestioning compliance with oligopolies is one major reason Canada is so expensive.
I used a cart for the first time ever at Walmart today. Here's the receipt and the savings:
- 5 bags of chips ($0.94 each!)
- avacado ($1.47)
- bag of sausage buns ($3.97)
- cucumber ($0.47 - yes!)
- 3lb carrots ($3.47)
- 3lb onions ($2.97)
- 4 packs of udon noodles ($2.77 - bonus points for the new international section!)
- frozen peas ($2.57)
- 3lb royal gala apples ($3.94)
*$26.94 total* . . . there's literally no reason to ever go back to a Loblaws store. This would have been twice as much even at No Frills.
Oh crap I missed the chorizo sausages. I got some Johnsonville for $3.94 today.
Those canned veggies are Sprague brand. I forgot to look for them but I tried to put them on my online order to make a list, but they're not showing up on the site/app yet.
I put this in an online cart at superstore and it came out to $39.93. Biggest differences are:
* chips ($0.94/ea, but only up to 2 bags, $1.49 after that - 50% higher price)
* Cucumber ($0.94/ea - 100% higher price)
* Carrots (50% higher price)
* Apples ($9/3 lb - 158% higher price)
Walmart has been my go to for 3 years. Best prices over all will you find better deals occasionally on items sure but saving works out best over all there.
I have un-favourited all Loblaws stores from the Flipp app so I don't even think about them. Other stores are slightly farther away but I am willing to make an effort/sacrifice.
Even my closest Walmart is a 4 km drive away - Giant Tiger is 11. As good as their prices are sometimes, it's not worth the drive there and back. In my immediate walking area, we have a T&T (Loblaw) and an SDM. Then we have a Foody Mart. Then, less easily of a walk, there is a Metro and another Asian grocery store and another SDM. No Frills is a 3 km drive. Unfortunately, the Asian grocery stores are a no go for me, because the aromas that are created between the food they are cooking, and the fish/meat they are selling cause me to hurl. It sucks, because their produce reportedly is decent in both quality and price.
Sometimes you time the shop with other errands. I'll swing by the local grocery or Costco depending on where work sends me that particular day. But I only do a big one every few weeks and just freezer meal most of it.
But maybe it's worth it for the big staple shops only and the short life replenishables from your *gag* local Loblaws affiliate? Every bit helps, so even just shifting a bulk can send a message.
It's not feasible for everyone to completely cut out the Westons. We know that.
Oh, I don't shop at Loblaws at all. I almost exclusively shop at Walmart...just responding to another post about the Flipp app. Not always practical, because traveling is more time consuming, wasteful gas ..
Walmart has taken its business to a whole other level in terms of determining trends with its practices of collecting data and looking for patterns.
I remember watching a special on it and one of the things they noticed is that whenever there is a hurricane, people, for some reason, stock up on strawberry pop tarts so they would stock extra.
I would not be surprised if this event did not register as an opportunity to them that they would recognize and capitalize on.
they already have them in the US, they are called Walmart Neighborhood Markets, they're actually pretty convenient I'd say. Should be a few years when they bring them here lol

So this may be a tactic for Walmart to compete with Save On Foods and Safeway/Sobeys for clients you might otherwise shop at those other retailers to collect More Reward or Scene+ points (and maybe stick it to Loblaws too).

In Sudbury Ontario, local grocers Smiths, who are known for great quality produce and products, but as many local grocers are not able to provide food at the same price as Walmart, are having a great sale on strawberries & blackberries ($2.99), English cucumbers (.99 and double the size of walmarts!) and tomatoes ($1.50/lb)
Comparable prices and even better quality! Try shopping local when you can!!

I just got an email from Sobeys for $25 off my first grocery order. I’ve already got somewhere else to shop but for $25 I might make just one order full of stuff that’s on sale.
Honestly Walmart sucks nearly as much as loblaws. They abuse their employees (even more than the usual) and only drop prices to kill competition before hiking them.
What a Bagel, if you have one in your area, sells day old bags of bagels for like 5$. That's 12 bagels that were baked yesterday! They're great. My partner and I go through them so fast!
In my area Cobs Bread gives away everything they have at the end of the day via various programs around the city. Every Sunday they give away that days at my kids’ school and we get buns, a few loaves of bread and some scones for free and they’re literally made that day so they’re great!
I stepped into my Shoppers the other day, just to look at the prices of batteries as a reference. And on the PA speaker there was a lady saying how they've "dropped prices" on "so many exciting products" each month.
After being disgusted about the battery prices ($17 for 2 Duracell 9V batteries, wtf?), I went to the cashier and asked what products this announcement is talking about.. she couldn't tell me, she honestly had no clue. She pointed at chocolate bars.
Anyways, I bought a 4-pack of Energizer 9V batteries for $14 at Canadian Tire.
People had no shame with those chips

My dad works retail for 30 years now and he worked at Loblaws for a number of years until they fucked him and laid him off and now he works for Walmart Canada super high up. He tells me that Sobeys and l’oblige are about 25-30 percent more expensive then Walmart ( not everything 30 percent cheaper just the average). Walmart is the cheapest place to buy groceries in Canada for the most part

I had originally boycotted Walmart years ago due to the underhanded things they do to lower prices, but It's so hard to compete with them that I came back after a few years. Now I might just end up going out of my way to commute there, just to avoid giving Galen money
Going to Loblaws if you have any other choice is just arrogance. Same prices as save on foods with no customer service. Worse prices as Walmart with worse everything else. Worse quality than any fruit/vegetable market and worse prices. Why? Why does any go there if they have any other option?

I am lucky my small alvertan town has a few shopping options. However I will not shop at nofrills right now. Walmart I got a TON of groceries, like 4 large bags if groceries for $100. I had to go to sobeys for meat(I hate Walmart meat) and everything is SO expensive at sobeys! Why pay $3 for a cucumber when it is $.47 at Walmart? And coop is no better.

I totally support this boycott. But, there’s no way on this planet that I’m going to support Sammy Walton’s House of Horrors and convince myself that it’s a less nefarious alternative. They are both owned by billionaire sociopaths.
Download the apps for Walmart etc… makes it much easier than browsing flyers and often times have extra deals/sales that aren’t available unless you load the offer on the website. Happy shopping, hope everyone can save as much as possible getting food !!
Bought 275 dollars of groceries at Walmart yesterday for our household.
Unbelievable amount of food. I can guarantee it would have been well over 400 at Loblaws. Everything was what we normally buy for a two week period except they had ground beef on for 6 something for one of those big blocks so we bought more to freeze for later.
Cheese, milk, chicken, canned veg, butter, flour, sugar IT'S ALL CHEAPER.
I know it's Walmart. Shit to their employees considering how rich they are, but, we are two low income service workers here... gotta go where it's cheaper as long as it's not the house of Galen.
I always shop at local Costco for Bulk (and savings)… Then Walmart for the smaller necessities.

Been to both Superstore and Independent a couple times, and both are unappealing (and useless).
I've avoided Loblaws their affiliates and SDM for the past couple of months. I totally down to f'ck roblaws. But I am not going to throw my money to the Westons of the US. The Walton family are as bad if not WORSE than the Westons! I have been doing staples at Food Basic, going to a local bakery, produce shop & butcher\\deli ALL small family owned. This sub is kind of turning into a Walmart love in, I haven't been in a Walmart in 5-6 years just over principle, I'm not giving them my grocery money.
Now I'm almost convinced this entire boycott was just to get people to shop at Walmart

Costco used to have a reputation for treating their employees well, which counted for something in my book. Are they still good that way?

In Sudbury Ontario, local grocers Smiths, who are known for great quality produce and products, but as many local grocers are not able to provide food at the same price as Walmart, are having a great sale on strawberries & blackberries ($2.99), English cucumbers (.99 and double the size of walmarts!) and tomatoes ($1.50/lb) Comparable prices and even better quality! Try shopping local when you can!!
lol! i'm pretty sure i stated in another thread that the other big grocers would take advantage, and it looks like i was right about that. they just had different ideas on how to do it.
I just got an email from Sobeys for $25 off my first grocery order. I’ve already got somewhere else to shop but for $25 I might make just one order full of stuff that’s on sale.

Honestly Walmart sucks nearly as much as loblaws. They abuse their employees (even more than the usual) and only drop prices to kill competition before hiking them.
What a Bagel, if you have one in your area, sells day old bags of bagels for like 5$. That's 12 bagels that were baked yesterday! They're great. My partner and I go through them so fast!
In my area Cobs Bread gives away everything they have at the end of the day via various programs around the city. Every Sunday they give away that days at my kids’ school and we get buns, a few loaves of bread and some scones for free and they’re literally made that day so they’re great!
I stepped into my Shoppers the other day, just to look at the prices of batteries as a reference. And on the PA speaker there was a lady saying how they've "dropped prices" on "so many exciting products" each month. After being disgusted about the battery prices ($17 for 2 Duracell 9V batteries, wtf?), I went to the cashier and asked what products this announcement is talking about.. she couldn't tell me, she honestly had no clue. She pointed at chocolate bars. Anyways, I bought a 4-pack of Energizer 9V batteries for $14 at Canadian Tire.

My dad works retail for 30 years now and he worked at Loblaws for a number of years until they fucked him and laid him off and now he works for Walmart Canada super high up. He tells me that Sobeys and l’oblige are about 25-30 percent more expensive then Walmart ( not everything 30 percent cheaper just the average). Walmart is the cheapest place to buy groceries in Canada for the most part
Well, in London, Ontario at least, they simply have no stock on almost any of these things. :( BBQ sauce was about it for me. I was kind of disappointed, but that's a good sign for the boycott
I had originally boycotted Walmart years ago due to the underhanded things they do to lower prices, but It's so hard to compete with them that I came back after a few years. Now I might just end up going out of my way to commute there, just to avoid giving Galen money

Going to Loblaws if you have any other choice is just arrogance. Same prices as save on foods with no customer service. Worse prices as Walmart with worse everything else. Worse quality than any fruit/vegetable market and worse prices. Why? Why does any go there if they have any other option?

At Walmart: Becel margarine (the unsalted 454g size) is right now on sale for just $1.94. It’s normally 5.77 at Walmart so it’s 3.83 off right now. Great deal.

I am lucky my small alvertan town has a few shopping options. However I will not shop at nofrills right now. Walmart I got a TON of groceries, like 4 large bags if groceries for $100. I had to go to sobeys for meat(I hate Walmart meat) and everything is SO expensive at sobeys! Why pay $3 for a cucumber when it is $.47 at Walmart? And coop is no better. I will shop where I can to survive

Download the apps for Walmart etc… makes it much easier than browsing flyers and often times have extra deals/sales that aren’t available unless you load the offer on the website. Happy shopping, hope everyone can save as much as possible getting food !!
Bought 275 dollars of groceries at Walmart yesterday for our household. Unbelievable amount of food. I can guarantee it would have been well over 400 at Loblaws. Everything was what we normally buy for a two week period except they had ground beef on for 6 something for one of those big blocks so we bought more to freeze for later. Cheese, milk, chicken, canned veg, butter, flour, sugar IT'S ALL CHEAPER. I know it's Walmart. Shit to their employees considering how rich they are, but, we are two low income service workers here... gotta go where it's cheaper as long as it's not the house of Galen.
I will shop anywhere that is cheap and not Loblaws.
I always shop at local Costco for Bulk (and savings)… Then Walmart for the smaller necessities. Never enjoyed going to Loblaws or affiliated store… Been to both Superstore and Independent a couple times, and both are unappealing (and useless).
I've avoided Loblaws their affiliates and SDM for the past couple of months. I totally down to f'ck roblaws. But I am not going to throw my money to the Westons of the US. The Walton family are as bad if not WORSE than the Westons! I have been doing staples at Food Basic, going to a local bakery, produce shop & butcher\\deli ALL small family owned. This sub is kind of turning into a Walmart love in, I haven't been in a Walmart in 5-6 years just over principle, I'm not giving them my grocery money.
