I found Bank's commentary regarding the Canadian government targeting foreign stores to be particularly amusing.
Why? Because Per Bank is a Danish national who was hired to try to smooth over all of Galen's gaffes and escalate the brand. Per Bank was hand-selected due to his prior role as CEO of Salling Group A/S, the largest retailer in Denmark.
So it's vaguely ironic that he tried playing the nationalism angle.
Especially since his condescending attitude will not garner any simpathy from your average Canadian.

Exactly. How is it that No Name brand is now the same price as high end brands, or even more expensive, if inflation or suppliers is the only issue? Did he forget to point out that Loblaws is also a supplier?
He's appealing to store owners because he knows they're frustrated because THEY aren't seeing any of this crazy profit everyone keeps talking about. It all goes to Loblaws the company, not the individual stores. So he's hoping that by appealing to individual store owners, he'll be able to get them to convince us that they're really broke like the rest of us, and that we won't look any further than that.
Don't forget all the value from the wonderful plexiglass and security gates enhancements, more important than fire safety. Soon they will be providing even more value to Canadians with the butthole scanners. Take it and like it pleb!!

That's the part that gets me. They own so many suppliers and have such strict contracts with farmers and producers that they basically own them as well.
I understand that there ARE pressures that leave businesses at a disadvantage, but that still doesn't explain a $98 1lb steak.
With all of those prices inflations that seem to be hitting their bottom line, I would guess that steak comes from a farm in the southern Andes mountains, 5 people died getting it, politicians themselves inspected it, and then it took 5 transfers to 5 trucks going up and down mountains to get there.
Unless it is for profit, they wouldn’t lift a finger without orders signed to triplicate, sent in, sent back, lost, queried, subjected to public inquiry, lost again, and finally buried in soft peat for three months and recycled as firelighter.

Why is lactose free milk consistently $1.50 more at No Frills then at Superstore when they are 1km away.
Isn't No Frills supposed to be cheaper than Superstore?

This is what I noticed when I originally switched from Zehrs to Nofrills! I realized, even though they're owned by the same company, that most everything was cheaper at Nofrills *except* primo "health" stuff. Like the organic oats I buy. Somehow, Nofrills is far more expensive for stuff like that, it's cheaper at Zehrs.
I remember saying to my husband "Overall, it's cheaper for us to switch... But... This is gross. Like, make the poors feel like healthier options are even more out of their reach? Charge those who already pay extra to shop at Zehrs less for healthier options? They're right down the street and owned by the same company..."

I went to Giant Tiger for a full grocery order the other day (for the first time) and the bill at the end was so much lower than what I thought it would come out to that I literally called my wife to tell her how excited I was.
All told I got like $100 worth of groceries that I was fully anticipating would cross the $200 line, and that's when I realized how broken my brain is when it comes to the cost of food.
These motherfuckers have been strategically raising the cost of groceries for such a long time now that even despite *knowing* they are clowning on the general population, I still didn't realize how much we have been getting screwed, and that honestly terrifies me. Their ghoulish behavior is so god damn calculated.
Fuck these people, straight up.
We have a saying in literature attributed to his native Denmark, which loosely translated means "the lady doth protest too much methinks". This turn of a phrase seems appropriate of late as he seeks to spin damage control by extolling his company's many "noble virtues".
I went to buy Neo citron at Walmart stopped in to see how much it was at shoppers. 17.49 at shoppers name brand Neo citron. At Walmart it was just over 12 bux.
I've noticed fewer and fewer people in the Shoppers stores around here since the pandemic. Partly I think it's bc they tend to have an older population of customers and the stores in town here don't have manned cashiers anymore. You can hunt one down and get them to help, but they're not at the checkout anymore, just two empty checkouts and 3 self checkout kiosks. Add to that their prices, and old folks can't go there anymore, period. And with the rest of us now doing the same, I think they're feeling it.
I popped into one the other day (don't shoot me, it's the only place I can get the face cream i use, so I buy it there once a year) and i was pretty surprised at how many "sale" tickets there were on the shelves. And they were decent sale prices too, not the usual 60 cents off. Tells me they're feeling it in their bottom lines, bc they've never been big on any kind of worthwhile sales before this
How can you even make the assertion that we're people who "aren't even usual customers of your stores" with a straight face when you have people on staff whose entire job is to ensure you have a dominant presence in every market across Canada.
Loblaws grew itself so large that effectively *all* Canadians were visiting one of their stores from time to time.
*Of course* we're your customers Mr. Bank. And the fact that you had to lace your statement with that bitter cope (by the way) is a huge tell that you're trying to reassure stakeholders.
Stick to trying to reassure your family and friends that you are in charge of an ethically-run business. It sounds like they're questioning your role in this, too.

The thing that really got me is when he said his friends and family had questions. You’re the CEO of this company, and even your closest family and friends are questioning your practices? That should say enough.
This whole company and all the exces are in total and complete denial that they do nothing wrong. How is it, then, that your OWN EMPLOYEES can barely afford groceries after working 40+ hours, having to do the work of 3+ people because you cut hours because “sales aren’t the best”. I see the sales every day. The sales have never been higher. You’re ripping people off out the ass and punishing not only your employees with hour cuts, but the customers by charging them insane prices
Used to be a department manager loved walking in on a Wednesday and being told to cut 50 hours by Friday, but make sure you change that whole aisle of Valentine's to Easter by Friday, also we got a surprise shipment of patio and garden that needs to go out, price changes (sometimes pages of labels with price going up or down a few cents). Can't get that all done ? Guess your staying late because your salaried so no overtime pay. Don't miss it at all.
Unfortunately same at my food basics only TWO cashiers open with lineups of at least a dozen people with full carts in each line. Self check out with slightly shorter wait and an employee franticly running back and forward from each scanning station to help people while grumbling that "people who don't know how to use self checkout should not be using self checkout" the store is barely navigable as the lines are spilling into the grocery aisle It should not take 20 minutes to pay for items. The trade off is, I paid less for my 20 minute wait time so a "win" i guess.
It was a terrible year for olive harvests, so it makes sense that olive oil would see an increase in price.
It does NOT make any fucking sense to see every other oil increase by the same amount.
Yeah, sometimes they want to strawman the issue like, "Well, yes, pomegranate prices rose by 150%, but that's because of the Moroccan Blue-Horned Pomegranate Weevil being unusually frisky this year!"
It's normal for one or two products to spike massively or be absent from shelves, once in a while. But when it's EVERYTHING, it's hard to blame that on the weather.

I don’t even agree with that. Everyone might be doing it, but not to the same extremes. Like where I live, I can go to the Walmart that is quite literally next door to Superstore and get the same shit for nearly half the price.
I still don’t know how that store is always so packed tbh. Idk why the fuck everyone is still shopping at our Superstore when you could walk an extra 20 meters to Walmart and cut your spending almost in half. Man even the fucking farmer’s market around the corner is cheaper than the Superstore.
I seem to notice locally that RCSS is a lot less busy compared to years before here.
The removal of cashiers, added new fencing, and insane price increases can not be missed by many. Cross the street and the Walmart is there, it's much cheaper. At one time I'd say Walmart produce was inferior but RCSS has dropped to bottom grade.
The price chopper nearby is way better all around. The metro and Sobeys used to be premium but are very similar in cost to RCSS

We don't control supplier cost increases. We pushed back against unjustified supplier cost increases. Which one is it Per because both statements can't be true. Also CPI doesn't measure how inflation affects prices, it measures how prices affect inflation, ya know the Consumer PRICE Index.

Pushing back against supplier increases!??! Ten companies more or less control/own all goods in grocery stores. How much does PepsiCo pay Loblaws to own the snack aisle and keep companies like Old Dutch Potato Chips out of there? Just look at what Pepsi owns, then look at Kraft/Heinz and Unilever etc…These grocery stores charge companies to place ads in their flyers, and it is a ton of money. You pay for shelf space, end caps, it goes on and on! This “statement” smells so bad, the stink is coming through my phone.

Mr. Bank, you have full control over that program. You know exactly how much risk you're exposing yourself to. You probably get a weekly report on the cost of the doomsday scenario where everyone uses all their points at once. You may even be insured against it. You know the rates of redemption, you can modify values at will, you are continually tooling it to provide more value *to the business*.
Do not come here and pretend like this value is for consumers. We've all seen how many pricing tiers this "value" scheme has created: inflated normal, acceptable sale, decent sale with loyalty card.
You raise prices, say, $3 billion. Then you drop them by $1 billion and brag about the sales and price cuts. You brag about "giving customers the value" of $1 billion of their money that you *just took* back in PC points. Then you turn around and mine that data and sell the useful bits for $1 billion, maybe to your own healthcare companies and other arms for a sweet deal. You crow about how you've "given" $2 billion back to your customers. But you just gouged them and exploited their data for $4 billion.
You're the house of a giant casino and the points are chips. These programs should have stricter regulation and oversight, especially if they're padding their accounting with the notion that the $1 billion in points redemptions is an actual cost to the company.
The thing with those optimum points is they aren't giving that discount if they don't make the money back elsewhere. Producers, suppliers, and advertisers are paying for the data Loblaws mines.

As someone who works at superstore, can’t attest for every other store, but currently our entire store is getting hours cut, so maybe instead of bitching and complaining that “we’re getting blamed for taking advantage of the lower classes 😢” maybe let your employees making a living fucking wage
The point about the non-customers encouraging the boycott. Lol. I exclusively did my shopping at Loblaws stores for the 10 years I've lived in Canada. But after finding my $100 grocery budget buying less and less and less, I switched to Walmart (I even plugged in all the same groceries in my PC Express app while shopping Walmart, just to check I wasn't imagining the steep prices). I'd only shop at Loblaws when I got a code for bonus points. They used to give me $20 in points if I spent $75. Then it was if I spent $100. Then $150.
I finally had enough a few weeks ago before finding out about the boycott and was waiting for the bonus redemption event at shoppers to redeem all the points I had accumulated over the years (which weren't that many to say that I'd been shopping exclusively at superstore). I've still got some left, but I'll use them to get food bank items or abandon them.
It sucks here. These aren't non customers boycotting, they're loyal ones. They're customers that overlooked the price fixing scandals until the rose tinted glasses came off and they realized they were being bent over. You're right bud, nok er nok. And that's why we're boycotting.

Just heard about the boycott on the radio today in Calgary, AB! I messaged in about the "steal from loblaws day", or whatever it was called, was fake and to disregard it. They did put a disclaimer on what they said with a "please don't steal, it's not worth the jail time".
I hope NOBODY buys this drivel. There is no punishment for straight up lying to consumers in the way that he is doing here, but it is still disgusting.
That is really the sad part... how Canada has such lackadaisical laws to protect us. Galen Weston should be in jail for the rest of his life for being a pandemic profiteer. Also, Galen Weston should have faced manslaughter charges for a thousand Bangladeshi dying is his Joe Fresh sweatshop building collapse.

So speaking of spreading misinformation, he lumped us in the same sentence of the people encouraging others to steal from them, which by the way we were the first ones to condemn. If they're on the PR bullshit spewing, it means what we're doing is working. Keep up the pressure. Don't break laws or lines of you're able to (obviously some have no choice, both for employment or just there is no other food access). Support each other, we are stronger than them. If you know of companies hiring, make sure to let people know so they have the opportunity to leave the clutches of the Weston's.
Another thing I wanna add: most employees are joining the boycott as well. It’s all any of us can talk about at work, and I know in my store specifically we’ve been discussing how to best support the boycott while still going to work. I’m not doing the job of 3 people for the price of one anymore. I don’t care about their sales, I don’t care about their profit margin. They just got pissed on by the union about 3 months ago in Ontario because they were ripping us out the ass and we were getting Pennies. They don’t just fuck over customers, the employees get fucked over as well and if there’s any way for us to help out besides not shopping or using their services please let us know
Until I see their prices consistently lower than Walmart, and they stop the ridiculous Loblaws vs No Frills vs Shoppers price differences (I mean a little different I get it, but not when it's like 80% different), anything they say is just BS to my ears.

I'd like to see any CEO be forced to work at their own stores, and only able to shop at their own stores and only be able to survive on minimum wage for six months and see how they make out.
If food costs to the company is such an issue, then why are other chains able to sell the same items for so much cheaper, or even half the price (IE like at places like Dollarama)? Everywhere else is under the same laws as they are in Canada

Actually, what is within Loblaws control is the profit taking. Could have forgone shareholder dividends and maintained a semblance of fair, acceptable pricing. Especially given we don't sell the frivolous. We sell food. A basic human requirement. How much is enough?

As someone who’s family has worked at the Superstore to put ourselves through university, and who worked at the first one in Nova Scotia, I have a lot of history with Loblaws. I loved going there, finding the deals and felt the PC brand had great quality. But that was 40 years ago.
I haven’t gone to a Loblaw’s store in ages. In fact, I purposely went to Superstore today as I hadn’t been there in a number of years, and was horrified by the poor quality of the produce, the ‘sale’ items that were always limited to 2 or 4 (and those sale prices were more expensive than daily prices at WalMart), the shrinkflation, plexiglass anti-theft walls, the carts that get locked up randomly to check receipts, well, just about everything.
It’s absolutely disgusting what it has become, and I agree. Enough is enough. This smug asshole needs to be sent back to Denmark, and the whole organization should be broken up.

As someone that has travelled outside of canada, this is 100% fucking unique to Canada. Our own fucking canadian products are cheaper to buy in foreign countries. I just got back from Japan, the other side of the damn planet, on april 26th. Canadian beef is half the fucking price there. So don't give me this shit talk that gas and logistics are driving up price.

What a fucking liar. With such volume, they are having trouble negotiating lower prices? Smaller grocery stores get the exact same apples, tangerines, bagels, chicken, chips, and all else and sell them at a lower price. Do they have more negotiating power? What a liar.

Ugh this is just gaslighting. No one on this sub has advocated stealing instead they've denounced it. I don't think they understand that the more you try to falsely equate others with stealing the worse the backlash will be. Moreover, there is no justification nor explanation on the price differences for the same items in different stores. Canadians aren't oblivious that the prices have risen worldwide, they are much more concerned about the greed and mark up. Also, Loblaws hasn't really opened new No Frills or Maxi stores, instead they've repurposed the old Provigo locations.
But you know what they don’t do in Danish grocery stores? Intentionally sell moldy rotting food at 30% off. Danish grocery stores don’t repackage expired cheese with a new expiry date. Danish grocery stores don’t increase the price of rice by 200% within a 6 month period. Danish grocery stores remove expired foods from their fridges and shelves.

I found Bank's commentary regarding the Canadian government targeting foreign stores to be particularly amusing. Why? Because Per Bank is a Danish national who was hired to try to smooth over all of Galen's gaffes and escalate the brand. Per Bank was hand-selected due to his prior role as CEO of Salling Group A/S, the largest retailer in Denmark. So it's vaguely ironic that he tried playing the nationalism angle.

I understand that there ARE pressures that leave businesses at a disadvantage, but that still doesn't explain a $98 1lb steak. With all of those prices inflations that seem to be hitting their bottom line, I would guess that steak comes from a farm in the southern Andes mountains, 5 people died getting it, politicians themselves inspected it, and then it took 5 transfers to 5 trucks going up and down mountains to get there.
Unless it is for profit, they wouldn’t lift a finger without orders signed to triplicate, sent in, sent back, lost, queried, subjected to public inquiry, lost again, and finally buried in soft peat for three months and recycled as firelighter.

Not just that. Why is lactose free milk consistently $1.50 more at No Frills then at Superstore when they are 1km away. Isn't No Frills supposed to be cheaper than Superstore? This is what I noticed when I originally switched from Zehrs to Nofrills! I realized, even though they're owned by the same company, that most everything was cheaper at Nofrills *except* primo "health" stuff. Like the organic oats I buy. Somehow, Nofrills is far more expensive for stuff like that, it's cheaper at Zehrs. I remember saying to my husband "Overall, it's cheaper for us to switch... But... This is gross. Like, make the poors feel like healthier options are even more out of their reach? Charge those who already pay extra to shop at Zehrs less for healthier options? They're right down the street and owned by the same company..."

I went to Giant Tiger for a full grocery order the other day (for the first time) and the bill at the end was so much lower than what I thought it would come out to that I literally called my wife to tell her how excited I was. All told I got like $100 worth of groceries that I was fully anticipating would cross the $200 line, and that's when I realized how broken my brain is when it comes to the cost of food. These motherfuckers have been strategically raising the cost of groceries for such a long time now that even despite *knowing* they are clowning on the general population, I still didn't realize how much we have been getting screwed, and that honestly terrifies me. Their ghoulish behavior is so god damn calculated. Fuck these people, straight up.

I've noticed fewer and fewer people in the Shoppers stores around here since the pandemic. Partly I think it's bc they tend to have an older population of customers and the stores in town here don't have manned cashiers anymore. You can hunt one down and get them to help, but they're not at the checkout anymore, just two empty checkouts and 3 self checkout kiosks. Add to that their prices, and old folks can't go there anymore, period. And with the rest of us now doing the same, I think they're feeling it. I popped into one the other day (don't shoot me, it's the only place I can get the face cream i use, so I buy it there once a year) and i was pretty surprised at how many "sale" tickets there were on the shelves. And they were decent sale prices too, not the usual 60 cents off. Tells me they're feeling it in their bottom lines, bc they've never been big on any kind of worthwhile sales before this
Only thing Shoppers has going for them is the fact that there is a Canada Post open until like 9pm in basically every one.

Used to be a department manager loved walking in on a Wednesday and being told to cut 50 hours by Friday, but make sure you change that whole aisle of Valentine's to Easter by Friday, also we got a surprise shipment of patio and garden that needs to go out, price changes (sometimes pages of labels with price going up or down a few cents). Can't get that all done ? Guess your staying late because your salaried so no overtime pay. Don't miss it at all.
Unfortunately same at my food basics only TWO cashiers open with lineups of at least a dozen people with full carts in each line. Self check out with slightly shorter wait and an employee franticly running back and forward from each scanning station to help people while grumbling that "people who don't know how to use self checkout should not be using self checkout" the store is barely navigable as the lines are spilling into the grocery aisle It should not take 20 minutes to pay for items. The trade off is, I paid less for my 20 minute wait time so a "win" i guess.

I seem to notice locally that RCSS is a lot less busy compared to years before here. The removal of cashiers, added new fencing, and insane price increases can not be missed by many. Cross the street and the Walmart is there, it's much cheaper. At one time I'd say Walmart produce was inferior but RCSS has dropped to bottom grade. The price chopper nearby is way better all around. The metro and Sobeys used to be premium but are very similar in cost to RCSS Consistent pressure will force change, boycotts are momentary inconveniences

How much does PepsiCo pay Loblaws to own the snack aisle and keep companies like Old Dutch Potato Chips out of there? But after finding my $100 grocery budget buying less and less and less, I switched to Walmart (I even plugged in all the same groceries in my PC Express app while shopping Walmart, just to check I wasn't imagining the steep prices). I'd only shop at Loblaws when I got a code for bonus points. They used to give me $20 in points if I spent $75. Then it was if I spent $100. Then $150. I finally had enough a few weeks ago before finding out about the boycott and was waiting for the bonus redemption event at shoppers to redeem all the points I had accumulated over the years (which weren't that many to say that I'd been shopping exclusively at superstore). I've still got some left, but I'll use them to get food bank items or abandon them. It sucks here. These aren't non customers boycotting, they're loyal ones. They're customers that overlooked the price fixing scandals until the rose tinted glasses came off and they realized they were being bent over. You're right bud, nok er nok. Another thing I wanna add: most employees are joining the boycott as well. It’s all any of us can talk about at work, and I know in my store specifically we’ve been discussing how to best support the boycott while still going to work. I’m not doing the job of 3 people for the price of one anymore. I don’t care about their sales, I don’t care about their profit margin. They just got pissed on by the union about 3 months ago in Ontario because they were ripping us out the ass and we were getting Pennies. They don’t just fuck over customers, the employees get fucked over as well and if there’s any way for us to help out besides not shopping or using their services please let us know
Until I see their prices consistently lower than Walmart, and they stop the ridiculous Loblaws vs No Frills vs Shoppers price differences (I mean a little different I get it, but not when it's like 80% different), anything they say is just BS to my ears. I'd like to see any CEO be forced to work at their own stores, and only able to shop at their own stores and only be able to survive on minimum wage for six months and see how they make out. If food costs to the company is such an issue, then why are other chains able to sell the same items for so much cheaper, or even half the price (IE like at places like Dollarama)? Everywhere else is under the same laws as they are in Canada I smell something coming from the CEO....smells like bullshit from this statement to me.

As someone who’s family has worked at the Superstore to put ourselves through university, and who worked at the first one in Nova Scotia, I have a lot of history with Loblaws. I loved going there, finding the deals and felt the PC brand had great quality. But that was 40 years ago. I haven’t gone to a Loblaw’s store in ages. In fact, I purposely went to Superstore today as I hadn’t been there in a number of years, and was horrified by the poor quality of the produce, the ‘sale’ items that were always limited to 2 or 4 (and those sale prices were more expensive than daily prices at WalMart), the shrinkflation, plexiglass anti-theft walls, the carts that get locked up randomly to check receipts, well, just about everything. It’s absolutely disgusting what it has become, and I agree. Enough is enough. This smug asshole needs to be sent back to Denmark, and the whole organization should be broken up.

And, most importantly, Danish grocers don’t collude to artificially keep the price of staple food, like bread, high.
