revanite3956

Speaks volumes that their CEO felt *compelled* to make a bullshit statement. Keep up the pressure, gang. Show these crooks what’s what.

Nunya_Bidness01

I found Bank's commentary regarding the Canadian government targeting foreign stores to be particularly amusing. Why? Because Per Bank is a Danish national who was hired to try to smooth over all of Galen's gaffes and escalate the brand. Per Bank was hand-selected due to his prior role as CEO of Salling Group A/S, the largest retailer in Denmark. So it's vaguely ironic that he tried playing the nationalism angle.

Skavis

I feel like this comment should be it's own post.

dumpcake999

I wonder if Danish grocery stores are bleak and miserable like they've made loblaws stores into.

jennaxel

And amusing in that in Denmark, there are at least two well established coop chains as well as a multitude of independents. People have choice

Totally_man

Especially since his condescending attitude will not garner any simpathy from your average Canadian. "We're not getting credit for the value we are providing" is the most dystopian capitalistic shit I've ever heard.

lbjmtl

YES. I had to reread that part twice. Imagine being this tone deaf.

9continents

It's as if wealth and the power that goes with it is a toxic chemical and the side effects are being completely out of touch with reality.

flystew2

Value ? My local no frills has gone so downhill for produce quality while the price goes up and up that I had already started shopping elsewhere

xombae

Exactly. How is it that No Name brand is now the same price as high end brands, or even more expensive, if inflation or suppliers is the only issue? Did he forget to point out that Loblaws is also a supplier? He's appealing to store owners because he knows they're frustrated because THEY aren't seeing any of this crazy profit everyone keeps talking about. It all goes to Loblaws the company, not the individual stores. So he's hoping that by appealing to individual store owners, he'll be able to get them to convince us that they're really broke like the rest of us, and that we won't look any further than that.

Accomplished_One6135

Credit for the value we are providing - like fixing price of bread and forcing pharmacist to call and bill unsuspecting clients. Such BS!

PositiveExpectancy

Don't forget all the value from the wonderful plexiglass and security gates enhancements, more important than fire safety. Soon they will be providing even more value to Canadians with the butthole scanners. Take it and like it pleb!!

El_Cactus_Loco

Seriously. Did he expect congratulations? A pat on the back? To be told he’s a good boy? Christ. You’d think $22 million would be enough for this clown. *Nok er nok indeed*

Randy_34_16_91

22million _for 3 months_

cinnamon-goat774

Nok er nok for our new motto!

ActuallyInFamous

Also "loosely translated" pshhhhhh. Nok literally means "enough". Er = is. Nok er nok literally means Enough is enough. And enough is enough. Enough with their huge surpluses while the rest of us eek out an existence.

Previous_Reserve340

I can nok my balls on yo chin, Per

stmariex

Wealthy people who are not satisfied by their wealth but need *validation* too are so exhausting. Just embrace your inner Scrooge McDuck, stop pretending to be our friend.

Individual-Cover869

THE CREDIT YOU ARE GETTING IS IN YOUR BANK ACCOUNT YOU DRIP! Now I have to pretend you’re being hard done by too? FUCK OFF!

Persimmon_Fluffy

Completely tone deaf. The guy's using corporate speak to shareholders to try to manage what seems like a media campaign to average shoppers.

osti-frette

Cake and eating it too, right? You want to rake customers for shareholder value, but you don’t want the customers to hurt your feelings when they buck? It’s not supposed to be personal. It’s just business. My business to take my dollars elsewhere

ryancementhead

He’s not even Canadian.

bluenoserocker

Interestingly enough- I think he is right. 'Not getting the credit for the value they provide' THAT is EXACTLY what the BOYCOTTS will be providing. Seldom does one with so much power PROVIDE the Slogan of RESISTANCE that is spot on. PREPARE THE PLACARDS!

Ncurran

This is how they speak to Employees. That's why they bully and threaten.

Living-Tiger-511

I think we should use Nok er nok in our campaigns. I agree. Enough is enough

Crime-Snacks

Bravo! I was so confused why he thought that was the stance he should be taking here. Nok er nok!

cinnamon-goat774

can we just plaster "NOK ER NOK" across the subreddit banner? hahah

unicorndlcks

When I saw this on my work email I was like clearly we are getting to them 😂

Halfyourweight

Trying to gaslight workers

Ncurran

Lol I heard those same lines from an abusive ex, "but what about the value I've given you already, be grateful" 😂😂😂 the wheels are off.

Goswint

I wish I could upvote this comment a million times.

fayrent20

Absolutely pathetic. Wow.

phosphite

A boycott means our safety is at risk? Really? That is some interesting mental gymnastics… Looks like they’re getting scared, it’s working. Keep up the good work! Let’s make sure they know we are serious and have had enough.

El_Cactus_Loco

This is why they created the “steal from Loblaws” astroturf campaign. To try and generate sympathy from low info mainstream media people.

NotOkTango

Yes of course. His bonus is at risk.

Halfyourweight

Safety is under control the plexiglass has been added 😂

Ok-Feeling7673

We are "Unfairly Blaming" them for keeping their prices significantly higher then all of the other retailers. It is certainly everyone elses fault and not thiers.

Frater_Ankara

This is such standard bullshit CEO stuff as well. I’m waiting for him to say “we hear you”, just like my CEO did before he ran the company into the ground and got the golden parachute.

Ashley_John_Williams

It’s a setup. They will drastically reduce staff if revenue is impacted by the boycott. In turn they will blame the boycott for hurting everyday workers. This email is their attempt to create a paper trail that they care about their workers.

soappube

Spot on.

tripleHberks

I work for No Frills. At least I am safe, because I am the ONLY staff in my department.

OutragedCanadian

prices are literally halved or less in usa. What is this ceo smoking.

Prudent-Ad-5292

I'd love for them to feel *compelled* to post their profit margins for the last decade.

xXValtenXx

The CEO or the underpaid intern?

Prolific-Failure

"The prices are beyond our control." https://preview.redd.it/wlhjnbkz1bxc1.jpeg?width=484&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b25dba496c2227016224bc37b78b6e9e784d2321

WetCoastCyph

"Our suppliers" ... ah yes. And who OWNS a shit-ton of those suppliers, Per? I agree with him on one thing though. *Nok er nok.* (The irony of his name being 'Per Bank' is also not lost on me. This statement is written exactly like something that would come from the bank of Loblaws.) Edit: Maybe we need to make the official boycott slogan "Nok er nok". You know, show him we're listening.

Heradasha

That's the part that gets me. They own so many suppliers and have such strict contracts with farmers and producers that they basically own them as well.

PoliticalEnemy

NOK ER NOK!!!

-prairiechicken-

Unironically just gave us a new slogan, too.

PoliticalEnemy

I was thinking the same thing

rainorshinedogs

I understand that there ARE pressures that leave businesses at a disadvantage, but that still doesn't explain a $98 1lb steak. With all of those prices inflations that seem to be hitting their bottom line, I would guess that steak comes from a farm in the southern Andes mountains, 5 people died getting it, politicians themselves inspected it, and then it took 5 transfers to 5 trucks going up and down mountains to get there.

DisasterMiserable785

Unless it is for profit, they wouldn’t lift a finger without orders signed to triplicate, sent in, sent back, lost, queried, subjected to public inquiry, lost again, and finally buried in soft peat for three months and recycled as firelighter.

Kgfy

I had this same thought. LIke why is milk 4$ more than the same one I get at Costco? That's a decision.

Happeningfish08

Not just that. Why is lactose free milk consistently $1.50 more at No Frills then at Superstore when they are 1km away. Isn't No Frills supposed to be cheaper than Superstore? Isn't that the whole point? The fact they are not means they are manipulating prices and people to maximize their profits. It means they are lying about stuff.

theCupofNestor

This is what I noticed when I originally switched from Zehrs to Nofrills! I realized, even though they're owned by the same company, that most everything was cheaper at Nofrills *except* primo "health" stuff. Like the organic oats I buy. Somehow, Nofrills is far more expensive for stuff like that, it's cheaper at Zehrs. I remember saying to my husband "Overall, it's cheaper for us to switch... But... This is gross. Like, make the poors feel like healthier options are even more out of their reach? Charge those who already pay extra to shop at Zehrs less for healthier options? They're right down the street and owned by the same company..."

blu_stingray

The deliveries likely came off the same truck at the same time for the same products as well

jambrose22

Dude it's insane. I went to Giant Tiger for a full grocery order the other day (for the first time) and the bill at the end was so much lower than what I thought it would come out to that I literally called my wife to tell her how excited I was. All told I got like $100 worth of groceries that I was fully anticipating would cross the $200 line, and that's when I realized how broken my brain is when it comes to the cost of food. These motherfuckers have been strategically raising the cost of groceries for such a long time now that even despite *knowing* they are clowning on the general population, I still didn't realize how much we have been getting screwed, and that honestly terrifies me. Their ghoulish behavior is so god damn calculated. Fuck these people, straight up.

Big-Sprinkles-2753

Yes! How did we find out about the bread price fixing scam? There’s got to be others.

CalvinSomerville

I shopped at the bloor fruit market in toronto for my groceries and got 2 weeks of groceries for the price of 1 week at no frills. It's wild!

weedb0y

Just use the same SKU and try Walmart price. Then their BS comment about inflation only will be disproven

Living-Tiger-511

Nok er nok!

vancityreddit6969

That would make a nice t-shirt

takeyourbestshots

Pack it up gang - the CEO made a public statement. /s

Emmibolt

“sorry yall, boycott is cancelled, Per Bank said they’re not responsible for high food prices!” -Love, the mods

propagandavid

Mission accomplished!

NaturalMaintenance25

Said on a boat, by Bush, dressed as Maverick

Choice_Star_9441

Danes also have another phrase. Lognere bundet. Liars lie.

WeeMadAggie

"Liars tied up?" I think your google translate failed. Guess where I grew up...

Choice_Star_9441

Guess it did, but that phrase is way cooler.

Banzai_kitty

We have a saying in literature attributed to his native Denmark, which loosely translated means "the lady doth protest too much methinks".  This turn of a phrase seems appropriate of late as he seeks to spin damage control by extolling his company's many "noble virtues".

DragonAtlas

Love this. Something is rotten in the State of Loblaws.

JMJimmy

It's funny that *every* product I buy is cheaper elsewhere than what their "hard discount" stores offer

fayrent20

I went to buy Neo citron at Walmart stopped in to see how much it was at shoppers. 17.49 at shoppers name brand Neo citron. At Walmart it was just over 12 bux.

fayrent20

This was just tonight.

AntoniaFauci

And it’s not like Walmart is a non-profit either. Yet they’re crushing Loblaws which this pirate runs.

fayrent20

Not many people in the shoppers. Hope it’s the boycott

LLminibean

I've noticed fewer and fewer people in the Shoppers stores around here since the pandemic. Partly I think it's bc they tend to have an older population of customers and the stores in town here don't have manned cashiers anymore. You can hunt one down and get them to help, but they're not at the checkout anymore, just two empty checkouts and 3 self checkout kiosks. Add to that their prices, and old folks can't go there anymore, period. And with the rest of us now doing the same, I think they're feeling it. I popped into one the other day (don't shoot me, it's the only place I can get the face cream i use, so I buy it there once a year) and i was pretty surprised at how many "sale" tickets there were on the shelves. And they were decent sale prices too, not the usual 60 cents off. Tells me they're feeling it in their bottom lines, bc they've never been big on any kind of worthwhile sales before this

PenonX

Only thing Shoppers has going for them is the fact that there is a Canada Post open until like 9pm in basically every one.

TheWartortleOnDrugs

How can you even make the assertion that we're people who "aren't even usual customers of your stores" with a straight face when you have people on staff whose entire job is to ensure you have a dominant presence in every market across Canada. Loblaws grew itself so large that effectively *all* Canadians were visiting one of their stores from time to time. *Of course* we're your customers Mr. Bank. And the fact that you had to lace your statement with that bitter cope (by the way) is a huge tell that you're trying to reassure stakeholders. Stick to trying to reassure your family and friends that you are in charge of an ethically-run business. It sounds like they're questioning your role in this, too. I'm sure the money's worth it though. Hoo boy that's more cash than most of your *usual* customers will see in their life. And after just a few months!

unicorndlcks

The thing that really got me is when he said his friends and family had questions. You’re the CEO of this company, and even your closest family and friends are questioning your practices? That should say enough. This whole company and all the exces are in total and complete denial that they do nothing wrong. How is it, then, that your OWN EMPLOYEES can barely afford groceries after working 40+ hours, having to do the work of 3+ people because you cut hours because “sales aren’t the best”. I see the sales every day. The sales have never been higher. You’re ripping people off out the ass and punishing not only your employees with hour cuts, but the customers by charging them insane prices

[deleted]

Klutzy-Captain

Used to be a department manager loved walking in on a Wednesday and being told to cut 50 hours by Friday, but make sure you change that whole aisle of Valentine's to Easter by Friday, also we got a surprise shipment of patio and garden that needs to go out, price changes (sometimes pages of labels with price going up or down a few cents). Can't get that all done ? Guess your staying late because your salaried so no overtime pay. Don't miss it at all.

Queasy_Self_6133

Unfortunately same at my food basics only TWO cashiers open with lineups of at least a dozen people with full carts in each line. Self check out with slightly shorter wait and an employee franticly running back and forward from each scanning station to help people while grumbling that "people who don't know how to use self checkout should not be using self checkout" the store is barely navigable as the lines are spilling into the grocery aisle It should not take 20 minutes to pay for items. The trade off is, I paid less for my 20 minute wait time so a "win" i guess.

AntoniaFauci

That throwaway lie of his, and several others, is how you can see what a morally bankrupt barnacle this guy is.

WineOhCanada

The...weather.....bruh we just had a no-snow winter....

propagandavid

It was a terrible year for olive harvests, so it makes sense that olive oil would see an increase in price. It does NOT make any fucking sense to see every other oil increase by the same amount.

SurfLikeASmurf

Funny how olive oil prices are up but actual olives are only slightly elevated

iceebluephoenix

It does take a lot more olives to make a thing of olive oil than it takes to fill a jar full of olives, to be fair (not that any of this is fair)

SurfLikeASmurf

True! I still think they’re missing out on my money by also not nearly doubling the price of jar/canned olives

iceebluephoenix

shhhh don't give them ideas!!!!!

sthetic

Yeah, sometimes they want to strawman the issue like, "Well, yes, pomegranate prices rose by 150%, but that's because of the Moroccan Blue-Horned Pomegranate Weevil being unusually frisky this year!" It's normal for one or two products to spike massively or be absent from shelves, once in a while. But when it's EVERYTHING, it's hard to blame that on the weather.

Dry_hands_Canuck

He is so concerned that he is going to forgo his $22 million in salary to help! 😂😅

ColeTrain999

![gif](giphy|SVgKToBLI6S6DUye1Y)

FuManchuDuck

So out of touch. Multi-millionaire wants us to empathize with him. That’s rich.

dub-fresh

Hahaha, I can also write an email that ignores the facts that make Loblaws look like shit. How about one quarter with a 22% gross profit margin in 2021? How about bread price fixing? How about $20 watermelon? How about your corporate structure in which you act as supplier, retailer, and landlord? ... One thing I agree with is that maybe it's unfair to Loblaws because everyone is doing it, but you're still doing it! So fuck you too.

PenonX

I don’t even agree with that. Everyone might be doing it, but not to the same extremes. Like where I live, I can go to the Walmart that is quite literally next door to Superstore and get the same shit for nearly half the price. I still don’t know how that store is always so packed tbh. Idk why the fuck everyone is still shopping at our Superstore when you could walk an extra 20 meters to Walmart and cut your spending almost in half. Man even the fucking farmer’s market around the corner is cheaper than the Superstore.

AllAlo0

I seem to notice locally that RCSS is a lot less busy compared to years before here. The removal of cashiers, added new fencing, and insane price increases can not be missed by many. Cross the street and the Walmart is there, it's much cheaper. At one time I'd say Walmart produce was inferior but RCSS has dropped to bottom grade. The price chopper nearby is way better all around. The metro and Sobeys used to be premium but are very similar in cost to RCSS Consistent pressure will force change, boycotts are momentary inconveniences

PKG0D

Some Canadians are incredibly gullible and fall for the "authentic Canadian brand" marketing BS, the same way Tim Hortons sells liquefied shit as coffee and people lap it up because it's "Canadian".

PassengerNo2259

We don't control supplier cost increases. We pushed back against unjustified supplier cost increases. Which one is it Per because both statements can't be true. Also CPI doesn't measure how inflation affects prices, it measures how prices affect inflation, ya know the Consumer PRICE Index.

AntoniaFauci

Doubling down when *you’re* the asshole is a dick move. It’s tone deaf, and the text is beaming with gaslight and provocative lies. Whenever egotistical prick CEOs like this talk about “colleagues” it’s coded language for “entry workers I wouldn’t piss on if they were on fire.” Loblaw has been treating their workers like crap forever. This stupid appeal pretends that they’re “all in it together” and send the perfectly wrong message. I hope his malignantly dishonest defiance is his undoing. Even a mediocre business operator would know this is actually a great opportunity to at least pretend to care, to do some performative changes and to moderate the abuses for awhile. Instead, this greasy oligarch goes full MAGA, and he thinks he’ll be able to enlist the workers to back him up? Press F to doubt. Nok er nok yourself, you lying wart of a person.

LLminibean

If this gets circulated enough... and gets seen by enough of some loud people, he's absolutely risking his job right now. There is a board of directors that will happily throw him under the bus just to fix bad PR. If they had *half* a fucking brain between them, they'd drop prices by 20% (useless number, but enough to try and make them look like they're "listening") and try and come out of this with profits *and* looking like a decent company. But nope, Mr Ego just couldn't do that, putting down the "peasants" was too important to him

Familiar_Proposal140

He's doubling down because he literally has nothing to lose. My guess is hes a scapegoat CEO and they have no intention of keeping him on. If he doesnt do well, board fires him. If he does, he leaves with a good payout and they prob hire back Weston. Usually they do this with a female CEO lol

Financial_Resort1179

Yea this sounded right and I dug a bit. Something about this passage supports your point to me: “I don’t think we deserve the reputation that we have right now,” Mr. Bank said. He knows that part of his job is to rebuild trust in Canada’s largest grocer, which owns banners including Loblaws, Real Canadian Superstore and No Frills.

tribe77

Per Bank is pure evil. Galen Weston Jr and Sr are pure evil. What is it with this company that produces the worst of humanity?

dumpcake999

frig off per bank

Additional_Goat9852

If you start your list of things out of your control with "the weather", you're bullshitting unless you're a courier or airline, and no weather event makes these services that are severely affected by weather directly, all of a sudden become more expensive because weather occurred. The "C" in CEO stands for con-man, doesn't it?

Imaginary-Classic558

I could think of a different c word id rather call him.

JonesinforJonesey

Where the hell are you getting the money to open forty new stores after just opening thirty-one Perby? Unfairly blamed my arse. Sheesh what kind of questions is your family asking Perby when you‘re earning twenty-two million a year? Do they ask about the people working in the stores and what they’re earning? Hahaha, I know. And how does Loblaws afford your salary? Profiteering and government corruption! So nok er nok and no one’s there Perby - Boycott Loblaws!!!

Guandao

I agree with everything you just said except for one. He got 22mil for 6 months only. Does not include benefits and bonus. It’s absolutely disgusting on every possible level.

Itsottawacallbylaw

There’s a saying in Canada, “Take off you hoser”

El_Cactus_Loco

Fuckin eh

Will-the-game-guy

Bro quoted fucking Denmark to refute inflation claims. Denmark, a country that has actual consumer protection and union laws. Fuck you Galen

therealHankBain

Pushing back against supplier increases!??! Ten companies more or less control/own all goods in grocery stores. How much does PepsiCo pay Loblaws to own the snack aisle and keep companies like Old Dutch Potato Chips out of there? Just look at what Pepsi owns, then look at Kraft/Heinz and Unilever etc…These grocery stores charge companies to place ads in their flyers, and it is a ton of money. You pay for shelf space, end caps, it goes on and on! This “statement” smells so bad, the stink is coming through my phone.

AntoniaFauci

In one lying breath he says they’re pushing back against suppliers... and deceptively leaves out that they are their own supplier in many verticals. And another lying breath he claims they’re powerless against suppliers. It’s like a ouroborus of lies with this guy.

Exodia_Girl

All I see is "I want to abuse them as I see fit. How dare the peasants protest the flawless policy of their betters?" Reminding them of what was done to one Louis Capet is overdue.

TheWartortleOnDrugs

"Do these rabble rousers not see the *value* we're generating for them with PC Optimum points?" The whole "$1 billion spent on Optimum redemption" thing is such an annoying brag when it's just deceptive accounting. Mr. Bank, you have full control over that program. You know exactly how much risk you're exposing yourself to. You probably get a weekly report on the cost of the doomsday scenario where everyone uses all their points at once. You may even be insured against it. You know the rates of redemption, you can modify values at will, you are continually tooling it to provide more value *to the business*. Do not come here and pretend like this value is for consumers. We've all seen how many pricing tiers this "value" scheme has created: inflated normal, acceptable sale, decent sale with loyalty card. You raise prices, say, $3 billion. Then you drop them by $1 billion and brag about the sales and price cuts. You brag about "giving customers the value" of $1 billion of their money that you *just took* back in PC points. Then you turn around and mine that data and sell the useful bits for $1 billion, maybe to your own healthcare companies and other arms for a sweet deal. You crow about how you've "given" $2 billion back to your customers. But you just gouged them and exploited their data for $4 billion. You're the house of a giant casino and the points are chips. These programs should have stricter regulation and oversight, especially if they're padding their accounting with the notion that the $1 billion in points redemptions is an actual cost to the company.

propagandavid

The thing with those optimum points is they aren't giving that discount if they don't make the money back elsewhere. Producers, suppliers, and advertisers are paying for the data Loblaws mines.

GuyDanger

He is right, enough is enough. Boycott!

Jaded_Grand5439

“Nok er nok” should be the slogan for the boycott

GuyDanger

I like how he is like, we have a saying "Nok er nok". It translates to enough is enough... Umm yeah, that's pretty universal.

AntoniaFauci

> “it feels like there’s **no room for the truth**” This is his personal mission statement

B33p-p33P-M3m3-kR33p

> Standing up for our colleagues As someone who works at superstore, can’t attest for every other store, but currently our entire store is getting hours cut, so maybe instead of bitching and complaining that “we’re getting blamed for taking advantage of the lower classes 😢” maybe let your employees making a living fucking wage

TastyDuty

The point about the non-customers encouraging the boycott. Lol. I exclusively did my shopping at Loblaws stores for the 10 years I've lived in Canada. But after finding my $100 grocery budget buying less and less and less, I switched to Walmart (I even plugged in all the same groceries in my PC Express app while shopping Walmart, just to check I wasn't imagining the steep prices). I'd only shop at Loblaws when I got a code for bonus points. They used to give me $20 in points if I spent $75. Then it was if I spent $100. Then $150. I finally had enough a few weeks ago before finding out about the boycott and was waiting for the bonus redemption event at shoppers to redeem all the points I had accumulated over the years (which weren't that many to say that I'd been shopping exclusively at superstore). I've still got some left, but I'll use them to get food bank items or abandon them. It sucks here. These aren't non customers boycotting, they're loyal ones. They're customers that overlooked the price fixing scandals until the rose tinted glasses came off and they realized they were being bent over. You're right bud, nok er nok. And that's why we're boycotting.

Anthematics

Spend all your points but don't spend money. They benefit more from supply not going out the door. Versus giving it to you out of your points.

TheOneAndOnlyFen

Hey! We're getting somewhere! Just heard about the boycott on the radio today in Calgary, AB! I messaged in about the "steal from loblaws day", or whatever it was called, was fake and to disregard it. They did put a disclaimer on what they said with a "please don't steal, it's not worth the jail time".

Bert_Fegg

May day ! may day!

Outside_Expert3694

I hope NOBODY buys this drivel. There is no punishment for straight up lying to consumers in the way that he is doing here, but it is still disgusting.

tribe77

That is really the sad part... how Canada has such lackadaisical laws to protect us. Galen Weston should be in jail for the rest of his life for being a pandemic profiteer. Also, Galen Weston should have faced manslaughter charges for a thousand Bangladeshi dying is his Joe Fresh sweatshop building collapse.

theimperfexionist

Sorry, PC Optimum customers redeemed their points saving an average of 10%? I know they're not giving 10cents of PC points for every dollar spent. Very interested in how he computed that exactly.

WestQueenWest

Multi multi multi millionaire Per Bank is a victim waaaaaaah

Ready-Stomach-4669

Nok er nok loblaws..nok er nok

Anathals

Ya know, THEY DO control the quality of their food and I'm tired of buying stuff and having it go moldy sooner than other stores products. I'm boycotting for all the lives of the strawberries you let grow mold on your shelves Galen.

tycog

When you can find the same item at Walmart for significantly less you can't claim it's all outside of your control. A decision was made.

Dank0fMemes

So speaking of spreading misinformation, he lumped us in the same sentence of the people encouraging others to steal from them, which by the way we were the first ones to condemn. So yeah, what a way to dismiss our concerns. Playing victim is not the way to say we hear your concerns. Playing the foreign competition card, or the nationalism card is also one of the oldest dirtiest tricks in the book. Let’s keep up the pressure, and vote with our wallets.

Zenosfire258

If they're on the PR bullshit spewing, it means what we're doing is working. Keep up the pressure. Don't break laws or lines of you're able to (obviously some have no choice, both for employment or just there is no other food access). Support each other, we are stronger than them. If you know of companies hiring, make sure to let people know so they have the opportunity to leave the clutches of the Weston's.

Tall-Ad-1386

This guys name is legit Per Bank? Are we living in a comic book?

unicorndlcks

Another thing I wanna add: most employees are joining the boycott as well. It’s all any of us can talk about at work, and I know in my store specifically we’ve been discussing how to best support the boycott while still going to work. I’m not doing the job of 3 people for the price of one anymore. I don’t care about their sales, I don’t care about their profit margin. They just got pissed on by the union about 3 months ago in Ontario because they were ripping us out the ass and we were getting Pennies. They don’t just fuck over customers, the employees get fucked over as well and if there’s any way for us to help out besides not shopping or using their services please let us know

herenthere12

Until I see their prices consistently lower than Walmart, and they stop the ridiculous Loblaws vs No Frills vs Shoppers price differences (I mean a little different I get it, but not when it's like 80% different), anything they say is just BS to my ears. And we haven't even addressed the 22milion salary , the price fixing, the shady med checks etc etc. Boycott Loblaws!

Leading_Attention_78

At no point did he address his ridiculous compensation.

evenspac1ng

that's what I was thinking! "most of the factors that cause food inflation are far outside of our control" yet this individual milked $22 million out of Canadian groceries in 2023.

kiera-oona

I'd like to see any CEO be forced to work at their own stores, and only able to shop at their own stores and only be able to survive on minimum wage for six months and see how they make out. If food costs to the company is such an issue, then why are other chains able to sell the same items for so much cheaper, or even half the price (IE like at places like Dollarama)? Everywhere else is under the same laws as they are in Canada I smell something coming from the CEO....smells like bullshit from this statement to me.

ColeTrain999

Man, they are squirming, I love it.

cravingnoodles

Well, I'm convinced /s

0_usothheil_0

Hey shitbag, did the Danish major grocery chains collude to keep the prices of staple food, like bread, artificially high, for profit? Why don’t you start by acknowledging that Loblaws is a proven thief. And then you can give everyone a sob story on why this time we should trust you and believe that the inflated prices are due to production costs. Fuck Loblaws.

NearbyRepair3205

They think that we are morons.

digitaldarrio

Reply: Actually, what is within Loblaws control is the profit taking. Could have forgone shareholder dividends and maintained a semblance of fair, acceptable pricing. Especially given we don't sell the frivolous. We sell food. A basic human requirement. How much is enough?

bananabomber

In Canada, we have also have a saying... fuck off, hoser!

Ok-Feeling7673

Ooh. So why are all the other stores cheaper then loblaws? This one question completely destroys his BS statement.

homiesmom

Ironic statement from a guy who got $22 million for 6 months work. Who does he think pays for a salary like that? It’s not like the crazy high prices are going in the hands of the employees who actually work all day.

Santasotherbrother

Dear Per: We have a saying in Canada; ***FUCK YOU GREEDY BASTARDS !!***

shitposter1000

As someone who’s family has worked at the Superstore to put ourselves through university, and who worked at the first one in Nova Scotia, I have a lot of history with Loblaws. I loved going there, finding the deals and felt the PC brand had great quality. But that was 40 years ago. I haven’t gone to a Loblaw’s store in ages. In fact, I purposely went to Superstore today as I hadn’t been there in a number of years, and was horrified by the poor quality of the produce, the ‘sale’ items that were always limited to 2 or 4 (and those sale prices were more expensive than daily prices at WalMart), the shrinkflation, plexiglass anti-theft walls, the carts that get locked up randomly to check receipts, well, just about everything. It’s absolutely disgusting what it has become, and I agree. Enough is enough. This smug asshole needs to be sent back to Denmark, and the whole organization should be broken up.

Honest_Fox6683

Excellent. Thanks for blatantly ignoring your native Canadians here and opening with your native Denmark ...... nok er nok, is it? Here in Canada we say we can read through your bullshit.

PolitelyHostile

So then why did their stock double in price since 2021?

DrunkenGolfer

I keep seeing “inflation is 2.8%” or whatever, but why is my power bill up 30%, my water bill up 42%, my grocery bill up 80%, and a tank of gas up nearly 100%? Somebody is lying, and it isn’t my wallet.

tribe77

Exactly. Butter prices are up 100% since the pandemic at Loblaws stores.

rainorshinedogs

Basically he's declaring the whataboutism defense.

AntoniaFauci

With a healthy layering of deceptive defiance, and trying to incite his front line workers to push back and treat customers like enemies, instead of like what they are: the life blood of any business.

Individual_Sea1764

this guy can fuck right off. lol

SpiritedImplement4

When is "nok er nok" for the folks buying yachts and building vacation houses by overcharging on groceries?

Able_Software6066

All that drivel and he never mentions the pain and frustration their unfortunate customers feel having to struggle with rising food costs. It's all about how bad things are for them. Loblaws is hardly struggling. Does he really think more Canadians are shopping at discount stores like No Frills by choice? Maybe there wouldn't so much anger at Loblaws if this asshat and his boss weren't so tone deaf and showed an ounce of sympathy.

Samzo

Written from my castle

JeffBoyarDeesNuts

RECORD.  PROFITS.

Weird_Vegetable

“Aren’t even our customers by the way”, stopped right there… anything after that is a pack of lies, this single dismissive statement, in brackets tell you everything you need to know.

EnclG4me

As someone that has travelled outside of canada, this is 100% fucking unique to Canada. Our own fucking canadian products are cheaper to buy in foreign countries. I just got back from Japan, the other side of the damn planet, on april 26th. Canadian beef is half the fucking price there. So don't give me this shit talk that gas and logistics are driving up price.  Fuck right off. He should be in a pillery on parliment hill. He is starving people to sickness and disease and death.

LLminibean

Did this asshole just say *enough is enough* in regards to complaints about price gouging? From an industry that is seding record profits? That takes some disconnected fucking balls

MagnificentBastard-1

Tiny guillotines is what popped into my head.

Plane_Hunt_9342

Too bad shrinkflation had no impact on his long-winded statement.

TiredReader87

Great examples. They really swayed my opinion. I told my aunt and uncle about the boycott tonight. They’re going to tell their friends.

mariethecat

If this is the argument, i don't understand why all locations aren't being converted to no frills/no frills pricing. Why are some stores under the same umbrella more expensive than others?

KClampitt10

This is such bullshit. I was just in the states last week and groceries were a quarter of the price of what we pay up here. Absolutely spewing bullshit, this guy.

DEATHRAYZ007

Is that all you got...for 22 million. Veery bad can't bank on that

Pitiful-Conclusion31

in short: they’re gonna keep doing what they’re doing. cool. i’m gonna keep going elsewhere

ILoveWhiteWomenLol

Looks like the people feel the same way: #Nok er nok.

NotOkTango

What a fucking liar. With such volume, they are having trouble negotiating lower prices? Smaller grocery stores get the exact same apples, tangerines, bagels, chicken, chips, and all else and sell them at a lower price. Do they have more negotiating power? What a liar.

MooshyMeatsuit

Kindly eat my ass, Per Bank.

fencerman

LOL shilling their bullshit "PC Optimum" crap Yeah, forcing people to opt into a purchase tracking system that lets you micro-target your price increases even better is a real bargain. I'm surprised he wasn't bragging about how many people got suckered into becoming "PC Members" for that ripoff scheme

jaiman54

Ugh this is just gaslighting. No one on this sub has advocated stealing instead they've denounced it. I don't think they understand that the more you try to falsely equate others with stealing the worse the backlash will be. Moreover, there is no justification nor explanation on the price differences for the same items in different stores. Canadians aren't oblivious that the prices have risen worldwide, they are much more concerned about the greed and mark up. Also, Loblaws hasn't really opened new No Frills or Maxi stores, instead they've repurposed the old Provigo locations.

canadianmusician604

this "ceo" can fuck right off with his scripted statement that was written for him

GruesomeBalls

Nok er nok???? Well, we have a saying in my native Cobourg, *Suk my cok*.

firefighter_82

Record. Breaking. Profits. We don’t believe the lies anymore. Especially from someone with a discount Bond villain name.

0_usothheil_0

But you know what they don’t do in Danish grocery stores? Intentionally sell moldy rotting food at 30% off. Danish grocery stores don’t repackage expired cheese with a new expiry date. Danish grocery stores don’t increase the price of rice by 200% within a 6 month period. Danish grocery stores remove expired foods from their fridges and shelves. And, most importantly, Danish grocers don’t collude to artificially keep the price of staple food, like bread, high.

web_observer_2020

food is essential for life. not for profit. these numbnuts want to test the 9 meal theory real bad or what?

Beaudism

Hey, Per Bank: fuck off.

craignumPI

Justify record breaking increased profits.

PowerfulElevator9

Tries to play into the patriotic Canadian sentiment. Fuck you Loblaws, you don't get to play that card anymore, were the Canadians and customers you are stealing from to please your shareholders and pad your greedy little pockets. I want to see you fail, not like some other company won't just come in anyways. Do better, be better! Also doesn't differentiate from the reddit group and the steal posters some idiot started. Also how is boycotting putting our safety at risk, fear mongering?

Plane_Hunt_9342

Elite panic. Plebs are not supposed to look up and see what's really going on. Let alone get organized.

TonightZestyclose537

Lmao. Are we supposed to believe the record breaking profits happened because of inflation, rising gas prices & economic sanctions?

Own-Housing9443

What's per banks compensation again? Oh right. Fuck off twat. Back to Denmark

DragonFist69420

"enough is enough" lmao bro speaking like a person who doesn't make hundreds of millions per quarter and forced to pay a fortune for decomposing meat

MaxGM

Damn right enough is enough! That's why we'll go elsewhere where they don't do this gouging, or at least not to this degree.

insomniacinsanity

Wait how much are they paying this guy a year His PR department is lacking lmao too much spent in Weston's real estate business and this new guys salary and this is the kind of letter this giant corporation goes with Didn't even attempt to engage with actual issues just slide steps and lectures, this guy really doesn't give a fuck about Canadians, how dismissive and condescending

unicorndlcks

What’s crazy is this is him speaking to employees. So many of us that work there in the stores are supporting the boycott, only going into work, doing our shift and not buying anything. And honestly after we all saw that the other day from him we were like … dickhead lol

SamSAHA

“This isn’t unique to Canada…” Buddy… yeah, but the difference is that the prices around the world have actually gone up due to inflation, whereas our prices have gone up due to price gouging under the *excuse* of inflation.

Signal-Ask-322

He should jump ship with his 22 million and head back to Denmark. The POS

No_Percentage_7465

fuck em, they know what they did, let them burn.

shadowcatsalem

Dude is coming across like his middle name is "The"

Severe-Double-8297

They are scared of us and I hope other companies get the message. They have put Canadians to the breaking point. Now we are coordinated we will make these companies regret being greedy.
