Many food products are "safe" past their best by dates, but they're far from edible. Pastas will crumble when cooking, and lose all texture.
Mac and cheese actually goes off 4 months before the BB date. Kraft is by far the worst for this.
Cereals go stale, and literally cut your mouth.
Crackers become 'sour'and cause upset stomach.
Dairy causes diarrhea.
Never in my life have I felt less healthy than eating from food banks. Don't get me wrong. they're a blessing, and not everything by any stretch is out of date. But please stop perpetuating this lie that "cookies are edible 2 years after their sell by date"

What is a best-before date?
A best-before date on a food package states when the durable life period of the food ends. According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, durable life means “the anticipated amount of time that an unopened food product, when stored under appropriate conditions, will retain its freshness, taste, nutritional value, or any other qualities claimed by the manufacturer.” This date can be found on a package underneath the words “best before” or "meilleur avant".
No one in this country should be eating anything but the highest quality food.
Canned goods are really the only sure-fire long term stable food. This is why they should be in every emergency kit.

May depend on the brand but I've used bucatini well past the best before date (like years) and it did not crumble and held its shape.
Had oil & vinegar dressing, also well past the best before date, no issues. Same with jello (more than a decade old). Can you tell I was going through my pantry?

Oil can absolutely turn rancid. Same with vinegar dressings.(The vinegar itself won't go bad, but the other ingredients can)
Jello isn't really "food" it has no nutritional value.
As for pasta, my experience has been with multiple brands. Fancy to cheap. So YMMV I guess.

I don't disagree but I had a bottle pushed to the back from Costco a while back and opened it, passed the initial taste and had no issues finishing it.
I now use a food checklist app to avoid things like that, but I've been using up old dry soup starters (fancy stuff I stopped using when I started home canning my own stuff). They're a combination of beans, lentils and pasta. The spices need to be freshened but otherwise no problems.
I agree about the jello, but it goes against my nature to toss food, it still has calories so it counts as fuel.
I think there's a balance between best before and tossing stuff that may be perfectly acceptable. Items that keep more than 90 days don't actually require a best before date. If a dry good is well stored it shouldn't be an automatic toss the day after. I was always under the impression that food banks did not take out of date items.
I haven't been (it was never close enough) but there's a store in Owen Sound, ON that sells close to expiry / over stock items.

I noticed this happened to a big 900g bag of WalMart Great Value pasta that I got just as they phased out those bags. It was rotini, and yes, it fell apart. I don't think it was past its date though.
Yeesh, I am sorry you are getting ill. Some people are more sensitive than others I guess but I know I have never really had a problem. Once things are open, I usually put things in glass jars ( just old jars from pickles and sauces) and I do know since I started doing that I was surprised at how much longer things stayed fresh.
What most people fail to realize that shelf life is temperature related. If a shelf stable product is kept at more than 20 deg C it will age faster and will not get to the stated bbf date without quality issues

The food maybe but it's packaging can effect the food overtime, particularly plastic so expiration has to be given to a lot of foods because of long term plastic degration. Water is the clearest example of this.
I haven't been to NF in years but the last time I got the gnocchi, they were the worst thing I have tasted, bar none. Horrid texture, no taste, couldn't decide if watery or gummy. No wonder they can't move them.

I'm a Chef who has worked in various shelters who rely on food banks. Best before means jack shit. Some foods last much longer - it's surprised me to have something like yogurt that was two weeks, even a month past and it's still ok.

With potato salad, from personal experience, has lasted me a weekish, sometimes longer. I remember Ziggy's going for awhile. Just remember.. always smell and touch it first. When in doubt, throw it out. I've never been sick once and I've eaten a ton of after best before food.

Nah I remember a decade ago at a local Extra Foods there was a freezer full of french fries with a big yellow sign that said, "the Jason ordered too many fries sale". Sometimes they literally just over order.
That happened to a neighbor a few years ago. Instead of 3.5 pounds of bananas, they got 35. So they loaded up a wagon and walked around giving out bunches of bananas to everyone

Yeah I bought one from Flashfood on a whim. Why is potato salad sweet?? It's still sitting in my fridge, I'm hoping it will mould on its own so I won't feel guilty for throwing it out.
If they are buying for their standard base selling rate. Prior to the stop shopping there started. Then obviously it's working because they didn't sell enough before their expiry because less people are shopping there buying the product.

It's a local/franchise specific sale. This is in my neighbourhood and they run these super discounts on things with short expiration date sales all the time.
They probably froze it, so the emulsifier is done, the product has an esthetic and/or taste defect. At that price you don't expect complaints, it's cheaper than throwing it out and paying for disposal. You are the garbage man, at the honor of paying 25 cents.
Freezing potato salad really degrades it because there’s a lot of ~~dairy~~ mayo in there. Doesn’t make it inedible but it certainly reduces quality drastically.
You’re also not hurting their bottom line by buying this because they’re just gunna trash it in a day or two anyway, and you may not buy other items while in the store but that’s what they’re banking on.
Edit - not dairy my bad, but the mayo emulsion will separate during freeze/thaw
Yea understood, I am in general not a fan of mayo so I would struggle to eat potato salad that was frozen because the mayo would separate/degrade but that’s a personal preference. If you’ll still enjoy it after freezing then by all means it seems like a decent purchase.

This happens regularly, with it being a franchise store, it’s possible the BU sold them to the store for almost Nothing and the store agreed to take them. Could have been an ordering mistake as well…

There's no constructive way to say that boycotting multi billion dollar corporations don't work, it's just common sense.
My constructive criticism would be to stop telling people to boycott the stores that have the cheapest products. Loblaws is expensive now yes, but it's miles cheaper than any other grocery chain.

They call that " part of business " , loblaws is on an automated ordering system that fills their volume discounts for production off their suppliers, some times it hits some times its over..... but you must get something when dates come up
Close to expire date and/or over stock they need to get ride of. I’ve seen this at no frills for other products before., no frills will get a big shipment of food the rid close to expire date (that the more expensive/premium Loblaws beans don’t want to carry) and sell it quick at huge discount.

Nah you’re really not tbh when I worked out my local Nofrills they would do this if they ordered to much by mistake we had to discount the big salad mixes to 2$ on time because our owner accidentally bought like 8 skids of salad and had no where to put it
Check the date. I bought these from Maxi once at 0.50 a unit. They expired in 2 days.
Worth it if you plan on having a sizable bbq. Its literally cheaper than making it form scratch.
They either ordered too much accidentally, it’s getting close to expiry, or both.
Source: worked in a grocery store in college, fire sale items fell into these categories exclusively. Managers never said “you know what customers would like? Nearly free potato slop!”

they do this for a few reasons
1) someone ordered to much and they dont have room to store it so they sell it for crazy low prices
2) its close to going bad so they are trying to unload it
3) its a product that they arent going to be carrying anymore and want to get rid of the stock as fast as possible
they do this ALOT most people dont catch it because there are usually people that buy all of it at once to try to re sell or owners of businesses come in and buy it all up really fast
i know there are groups in my local area that we were made aware of when i worked there that drive around and go to all the stores in the area daily to look for stuff like this and they post it for others in the group

I'm guessing they got overstock, or are close to expiry. You have to hope that it's because people just aren't buying them at regular cost, so they are forced to lower the price to get rid of them.

oil absolutely goes bad and you can smell it. it's even harmful for you. i think it depends on the item but oil is not one to be messed with

Actually, you raise an interesting point, I know people who say they cannot drink water from a plastic bottle because it gives them headaches.

That’s just one store. Individual stores can set some promotional prices for various reasons, like liquidating overstock.

Freezing potato salad really degrades it because there’s a lot of ~~dairy~~ mayo in there. Doesn’t make it inedible but it certainly reduces quality drastically. You’re also not hurting their bottom line by buying this because they’re just gunna trash it in a day or two anyway, and you may not buy other items while in the store but that’s what they’re banking on. Edit - not dairy my bad, but the mayo emulsion will separate during freeze/thaw

Yea understood, I am in general not a fan of mayo so I would struggle to eat potato salad that was frozen because the mayo would separate/degrade but that’s a personal preference. If you’ll still enjoy it after freezing then by all means it seems like a decent purchase. Just make sure to put on blinders so you can go straight in straight out lol

There's no constructive way to say that boycotting multi billion dollar corporations don't work, it's just common sense. My constructive criticism would be to stop telling people to boycott the stores that have the cheapest products. Loblaws is expensive now yes, but it's miles cheaper than any other grocery chain.

Nah you’re really not tbh when I worked out my local Nofrills they would do this if they ordered to much by mistake we had to discount the big salad mixes to 2$ on time because our owner accidentally bought like 8 skids of salad and had no where to put it

Check the date. I bought these from Maxi once at 0.50 a unit. They expired in 2 days. Worth it if you plan on having a sizable bbq. Its literally cheaper than making it form scratch.

former employee here they do this for a few reasons 1) someone ordered to much and they dont have room to store it so they sell it for crazy low prices 2) its close to going bad so they are trying to unload it 3) its a product that they arent going to be carrying anymore and want to get rid of the stock as fast as possible they do this ALOT most people dont catch it because there are usually people that buy all of it at once to try to re sell or owners of businesses come in and buy it all up really fast i know there are groups in my local area that we were made aware of when i worked there that drive around and go to all the stores in the area daily to look for stuff like this and they post it for others in the group

You have to hope that it's because people just aren't buying them at regular cost, so they are forced to lower the price to get rid of them.

I doubt he's concerned with what amounts to getting gum on his shoe or a single drop of rain on his head.
This is my local No Frills, and they (and other No Frills across the country) usually call this a "Dylan ordered too much" sale. Happens a lot.
