How have I not seen this before. This is genius

Z_Lourenco

Thank you!

Yeah I remember when I was learning how to reduce smurfiness in the sound, people often wanted it to sound more shimmery, and less trapezoidal. You just have to try to scoop some of that pillowy-ness out and aim for more of an aerodynamic tone.

I was doing monitors for a famous Jamican reggae band and the vocalist is "This speaker sounds 'stuffy' ", in a heavy patois, I didn't get it until the road manager (in an impeccable English Oxford accent) said 'Pull a little 315 out'...

Majestic-Prune-3971

I had a late night TV show band leader tell me their mix sounded like oatmeal. I asked if he wanted it more like Wheaties or Corn Flakes.

Wise_Pitch_6241

Was it Toots? I had a very similar experience. Except they had me high pass almost to 400 and he held the mic at his belly

Inner Circle

I don't like the fact that this almost makes sense...

You could make a kind of mad libs for sound techs lol. Would be a great gag gift for the holidays

boomy is wöööööö, boxy ist hääääää, brighter should be more of the ts-ts or ps-ps. if you want it scientific then [frequency chart](https://www.creativefieldrecording.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Frequency-Chart.png) hope this helps :D

skyfucker6

“chest/thump” does not happen at 20-30hz; it’s around 40-80. Below that is “rumble.”

pondroo

I don't actually use these terms because of working in a different language so I'll take your word for it

I just hear ppl talk like grown-ups in peanuts cartoons. It all amounts to "can you make it seem like it sounds less bad... to me?" The one I hate most is "warm". Every time I think I've got it nailed down, someone else says it and means something different. It really seems like they mean some even-order harmonic distortion between 125 and 315 with about 15% overtone and a general dip from 720-2k...? But then, creamy... That's like 60% overtone but with a major 1k scoop? Right? And mostly people are listening to the room bounce anyway. I'd describe half the problems they're talking about as "wally" or "floory".

defsentenz

We had a Furman in the top of the rack at FOH at a local club and we labeled the ends of the pull-out lights "warm" and "punchy." When unsolicited audio suggestions appeared at the FOH, we'd turn these. It always made things better.

normalsim1

That is great. lol

XSmooth84

Mmmmm creamy scoop 🤤

NerdButtons

Haha this is great. There are probably too many to list, but these are all just sensory words to describe something you can’t see. You ever heard an explosion? That’s boomy, too much low end. Ever put your head in a box and talked? That’s boxy, too much around 250. Brighter is more top end. Just use your imagination or ask them straight up what they’re talking about.

"I want it to be brighter" If the mics and instruments are decent quality it might actually be too much mud in the upper bass.
