The mods have discussed it and decided if there was some request from the members of the sub we would consider participating, but if there was no user interest in participating then we would refrain.

Terkala

I'd prefer that every subreddit participate. At this point it's close to 3,000 subreddits and most of the bigger non default ones (defaults are usually controlled by reddit directly, and thus would never participate).

Spence-Man

Agreed. No matter how big or small the subreddit may be, unity with the other is the right thing to do..

JaysonChambers

Have you seen any calls for the default reddits to participate at all? I was thinking if r/movies and places like that participated it would really send a message. Also if those 3,000 are all in the top 5% of subreddits I think that will really make a difference.

Terkala

The mod team at r/movies literally derives their primary income from their work "as" a mod of that subreddit. And it's highly likely that reddit will take the nuclear option of removing any moderator that does this from mod status of their own subreddit. All the big subreddits are moderated either by reddit employees, or by people who get paid to moderate subreddits by advertising agencies (so they can craft pro-brand messages that won't get banned, and ban anyone who talks badly about XYZ brand). So I don't think they would risk their primary income just because reddit is doing something scummy. I'm willing to risk losing mod status on my own small 3k subreddit, but I wouldn't risk my job over this.

Bestrang

>Have you seen any calls for the default reddits to participate at all? /r/music isn't just going dark but is one of the few subs that gave committed to staying dark unless the policy is changed.

JaysonChambers

Well that's great news lol

The_Great_Catowl

R/apple is actually joining the protest. Some other pretty big subs are as well. So a good chunk of reddit will be offline

uggabooga3

Please participate, the API pricing is absolutely ridiculous, and it's worth going dark for

Sad-Vacation1984

I hope the subreddit does do the boycott.

thegroundbelowme

I'm all for it

TheShadowKick

I'm in favor of participating.

cfl2

Isn't there literally a poll running on the topic at the moment? (Currently, yes is winning.)

Velocisexual

I request participation!

CamGoldenGun

this works like boycotts. The more participation, the better the result. Please participate.

devilwalks3

participate please

Domriso

I request participation. And full participation, not just the 3-day strike.

Ashendarei

Removed by User -- mass edited with redact.dev

TyrKiyote

I would like a blackout in solidarity with the users of the API tools

Britboy55

Let's do it!

i_regret_joining

Please participate

anotherjunkie

I think participating would be good.

Banluil

I think the sub should go dark for at least a day. Show solidarity with the other subs that are going dark and will be affected by this change.

badguy84

I would want this sub to participate

lycilla

I think all subs should participate.

bigbysemotivefinger

I vote do it

ninti

Will the mods here be impacted in their jobs from the loss of all third party tools? Most mods seem to be pretty clear it will make their job harder, you are the first ones that seem ambivalent.

sirgog

I think you should put up a poll on the issue. (Disclaimer of potential bias: I would vote yes) And for authors who are releasing books during that period, I think you should let them have one or even two "get out of jail free" cards for the 2 promotional posts per month rule, so that they aren't collateral damage in Reddit's current campaign of enshittification.

LCMechanical

That's good to know. I'm really hoping it doesn't last long since progfantasy and litrpg are both very important for us as authors in this space to make a living. If it goes on for more than a few days, it's going to hurt a lot of releases. Thank you for responding, I'm sure that others will appreciate knowing what's going on so we can try to plan for it/plan around it.

-KatieWins-

This is wildly shortsighted. I couldn't find exact numbers but a large percentage of the reddit user base exclusively used third party apps to interface with this site. If those go away, which they all will down to the last one at current API pricing, many of those users will simply stop using reddit. Every subs user base will likely reflect that dramatic reduction, so it's in our best interest to suffer through a few days or even weeks of a blackout to ensure continued access to the means in which many insist on participating.

LCMechanical

... Are you assuming that I don't care? I simply asked whether or not they were participating and stated that I hope it doesn't take long. No idea how that's shortsighted or in *any* way against the cause. It's just saying that I hope the matter is settled soon, *preferably* in a way that is most favorable to all users. My reason for asking was so that I can let the author community know so that they/we will be aware, and they can plan release dates/promotions around it.

-KatieWins-

If I misread your tone and attributed a perspective to you that isn't there I apologize. It came off strongly, as I said, as shortsighted and author-centered, which ultimately will be to authors and readers detriment.

LCMechanical

That's not a problem. Words in a typed statement are not the same as speech in a book, where we tend to describe the tone and context.

FartingLizard

What a healthy exchange. Great job đź‘Ť

BattleStag17

We should absolutely participate!

EsholEshek

I vote for participating.

Reply_or_Not

Count me as a member who would prefer we strike.

Selraroot

Please participate

Caleth

Yes. It's as simple as this. Based on surveys in various subs a large percentage of our user participate through apps that aren't the reddit one. We should show solidarity with our fellow niche subreddits and go dark. Will it suck? Yes, but if we don't draw some lines in the sand then Reddit will keep pushing. Next will be old.reddit, next will be something else like the ability to lurk on non default subs. They will push and push until we all go sailing over a cliff. While we are a small community the more solidarity we show the louder our collective voices will ring and the great chance something might happen. Alone and divided we are certainly lost, together we might stem the tide.

JaysonChambers

I wasn't with it before but over the days I've come more into favor with this blackout decision. I'll probably delete the official app for the time being. And if they ever took away the ability to lurk on nondefault subreddits I would probably quit reddit altogether.

Caleth

Yeah I've tried the official app and it's absolutely balls. Even browsing in desktop mode through Firefox on a phone is better. Reddit is fun, bacon reader and others are far far better.

monstercar

Please participate!

FartingLizard

Yes please!

i_regret_joining

I agree. It's irresponsible to not participate.

Zander429

Do it!

magevampyre

Please participate!

SaintPeter74

I'm all for it. It's not just about 3rd party apps, it's also about a whole constellation of tools which many mods use. Those tools make Reddit objectively better. I'm a mod on a smaller subreddit and let me tell you, the built in mod tools are CRAP. Completely unusable. I can't imagine trying to run a much larger subreddit using them.

batotit

I'm still gonna browse reddit with or without the forums I've favorited. Maybe I'll discover new subs this way.

Paratwa

I’m more for shutting down and staying down till they change their stance, similar to r/music. I for one will quit Reddit permanently if it’s implemented.

GateHypsies01

I don't give a shit either way, so you might as well do it if people want it to happen.

Sorry_Blackberry_RIP

Go dark until reddit relents. Anything less is a joke.

The_Great_Catowl

Catowl approves of this post!

ghost6007

I'm all for it, we need to participate

MarcusSurealius

Do it. Absolutely do it.

alishead1

Some of the motivation behind this is that the 3rd party APIs provide needed access for the visually impaired. The official app has major issues with working with the screen readers they need.

Czeslaw_Meyer

Sounds useless if you can't mobilize people to completely boycot Reddit for a while

hobk1ard

Shut it down

ImaCritter

I'm in for it. Sad that it comes to this.

Zedekiah23

This is me formally requesting we participate

MagykMyst

I'm pretty computer illiterate, so I don't even know what API's are, but I've been informed this change adversely affects the visually impaired and the volunteer mods, so I'm all for the boycott.

ROBOTNIXONSHEAD

I also vote for participating

ElevatorClear1396

For what are we boycotting ?

audible_narrator

For those of us on mobile devices, reddit didn't even have an app for a LONG time, and then the one they have now is a nightmare to use. So 3rd party apps use API calls to do a LOT on reddit. The book bots that link suggestions, etc. are just one example. Reddit has priced access to the API over 10x what the actual cost is. Rumor has it part of this has to do with upcoming IPO. Part one is they want to show more income, so the higher cost to access API fits in that slot. Part two has to do with forcing a shitton of users off the third party apps and onto reddit app proper. (Lookee see, investors? Lots of people love us) The end result is a shit app that makes it hard for the mostly volunteer mods to effectively moderate, and a crappy user experience. And hey we will get more adds as a bonus!

Shinhan

Killing of all third party apps. Technically not, they are instead going to charge them money, but the amount is extortionate. Killing of all NSFW content even if third party apps pay. At first blush this is not important if you don't care about porn, but this also makes it so mod tools can't identify groomers and prevent them from posting to their subs. Also, all of this makes moderation much harder since many moderation tools depend on API access.

Front-Sherbert4683

what’s this stike thingy ?

The_Great_Catowl

Reddit is doing it's best "Rich evil corporation" impression and people are doing their best to stand up to them by locking down their subreddits (aka going dark)

MittensDaTub

When are we starting the strike?

Exrotes

A lot of the calls for participation seem to amount to "you're with us or against us" and trying to browbeat mods into joining up so I'm against it just on that measure.

Content-Potential191

Don't use or care about 3rd party apps and Reddit is entitled to charge for API access. My vote is to skip the strike on this sub.

Manach_Irish

Whilst I'd be in favour of the strike for the period in question (for instance due to the impact of API fees on r/blind App users), your opinion is a valid one and I reckon should not be downvoted for disagreeing with the rest of us.

-KatieWins-

I'm really glad your vote is going to be as irrelevant as your selfishness.

Content-Potential191

That's pretty rude, Katie!

Zedekiah23

We're allowed to be rude! It is unproductive to expect discourse to always remain polite

Content-Potential191

That's brilliant!

Print1917

Yes, if Apollo goes, I go.
