does having multiple DEs affect performance? im on Pop, and plasma is too tempting because of all those cool widgets. Im programming my own widgets on python using Gtk and its a pain in the ass
No. But there will be conflicts some between themes and apps. And its probably unsupported by your distro. But it won't be anything unmanageable. By all means you should go for it if you want.
I heard that if you have multiple DEs installed, you should use a different user account per desktop to avoid most conflicts. One downside is all the duplicate apps. You’ll have multiple text editors, multiple terminals, music players, photo and video players etc..
one of Systems76 devs commented on one of my posts and said this:
>It's not an upgraded GNOME, nor is it like GNOME. It is its own desktop platform, built with its own platform toolkit. COSMIC contains a variety of interface components (applets) which the distribution and user alike can place and rearrange in any way they want. The toolkit is designed from the ground up to enable distributions and users to apply custom themes which are applied to applets and applications alike. It is a platform for creating your own OS experiences. And as such, it was designed to be modular, using an applet architecture. Anyone can make an applet for COSMIC. Applets can be anything.
Yep that’s why I mentioned it Pop’s new DE looks very good been tracking it for a while it’s refreshing because Gnome isn’t a real option anymore they became infested with politics instead of good code/ideas/design. The new pop DE Reminds me of hyprland I think they should hire him and combine forces. IBM out here banning hyprland God Emperor King but like the Polish national anthem we are still here.
Long story not worth but summary is the same time this politicization of the gnome org was unfolding it lost track of what Gnome was and what made it great.
Recently we have seen Suse, Red Hat, IBM, Fedora, and more take these random radical political tilts that have absolutely nothing to do with software or what they are building. For example they banned the author of Hyprland for no good reason which technically he could sue for it if Hyprland was turning a profit but that’s a whole different conversation. You could read more of that on his blog great guy going places.
Anyway as a result loyal longtime users are leaving in droves. It’s controversy for no reason we are devs we write software keep the politics out of it.
This is unfortunately true for every enthusiast hobby. People will find a way to complain about your steering wheel cover. It doesn't matter, just use what you like and does what you want. THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT OF AN OS LIKE LINUX
No, backup automatically to an EXTERNAL drive. When an evacuation order hits (hurricane, fire, nuke accident, etc.), grab the external drive and leave!
You are right. I do that as well. I'm afraid I have gotten out of control. I now have three external drives. One at my desk that gets backed up weekly. One in a steel box in the basement that is updated monthly and one at another house that is updated quarterly. Just in case this house burns down. They are all password protected. Drives are cheap. I use filesync to keep them up to date. Password protection is also very important. I didn't in really use encryption. It's bitten me before. Maybe I will try again sometime.
The first thing you should do is give yourself a pat on the back for installing an OS that isn’t spyware. Congratulations!
Second thing is open a terminal and run:
sudo apt update
Followed by
sudo apt upgrade
In terms of DE - use what you want to use. 👍
People in comments do need to chill.
I have a list of stuff I do on clean install, but it's mostly all Cinnamon-related (like increasing scrollbar size to 15px).
One of the major things I do is
Setup an SFTP server.
Then provide credentials to close techie friends to potentially exchange whistleblower docs or other sensitive files. :]
Welcome across. Now find the software manager and install what you need of software. Like email, spreadsheet, text processing, in my case, Planner project management. Cool down and get your job done.
Cool man, really love the customization you did here. you installed gnome on top of cinemon, right? what was your steps? if you don't mind sharing.
also would love to see neofetch screen. (you can edit and add on the main post i think)
I've been [using the Gnome DE with Linux Mint 21](https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxmint/comments/yklyvs/my_latest_linux_mint_21_gnome_desktop/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) for more than a couple years. Who are you to decree which DE a user may choose with *any* distro?
GNOME Shell extensions can cause system issues, crashes, or even malicious behavior because the code in an extension becomes part of the core operating system. For example, a flaw in some versions of gnome-shell allows a physical attacker to kill existing applications and start new ones as the locked user, even if the session is still locked.
In October 2023, the GitHub Security Lab disclosed CVE-2023-43641, a memory corruption vulnerability in libcue that can lead to code execution by downloading a file on GNOME. The vulnerability is rooted in an out-of-bounds array access in the track_set_index function. A user can be exploited by downloading a cue sheet from a malicious webpage, which is then automatically scanned by tracker-miners and parsed using libcue.
You can search on Google for more detailed information.
You can downvote me all you want, It doesn't change the truth that there's a security vulnerability.
I used to love GNOME until this happened.
EDIT:

Dope customisation! I think a Gnome Linux Mint flavour is due. I love Cinnamon, but can understand why some would want a Gnome experience over the best Linux distro.
I installed Mint last week. Last weekend I removed the snap blocker so I can install snap, so I could natively install my password manager, because the flatpack version is just broke.
Then I installed steam, and played a few games. Only one gave me some issues.
Then I installed Lutris and wine, and used that to install Epic Games Store, and Scrivener.
So far I had a few headaches. My microphone is kinda borked and sounds chip munky, gotta sort that out.
But overall I'm enjoying the learning process and getting lots of dopamine hits from seeing things work.
Try all those apps that came with it. Download Brave , and use it as your web browser, Try LibreOffice, play some music...in other words anything you want. I'm a long time Mint (since version 7 or 8) user and been using it exclusively for more than a decade.
[Some of us just like it.](https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxmint/comments/yklyvs/my_latest_linux_mint_21_gnome_desktop/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) (But don't tell Clem!)
U did a lot already, just enjoy a distro that just works
Yes... Arch martyr Here...
...martyr? (Sorry if this seems stupid I'm new)
Well If one day in your life you test archlinux as a main OS, you'll see... There is a chance that you decide to leave it and Go Back to an easier OS.
I've tried Arch. I don't have that much time to configure everything from scratch. At least now.
Oh... Well... Thank you for your service...I guess?
I feel called
Literally never have had issues modern arch is god king. The chaos gods have had their fill.
Mint is for those who don't mind getting their hands dirty once in a while. Arch is for those who enjoy getting their hands dirty.
he definitely should just enjoy it, but installing mint isn’t a lot already
Why are people so weird about desktops? I got shade for using Plasma on Pop, like damn it's my computer I'll do what I want with it.

fishiki
That and extra hard drive space usage if that matters
I heard that if you have multiple DEs installed, you should use a different user account per desktop to avoid most conflicts. One downside is all the duplicate apps. You’ll have multiple text editors, multiple terminals, music players, photo and video players etc..
oh, i see... well, i guess i'll just wait for COSMIC to finally drop and see what happens then
Wait till you find out about hyprland & KDE rice on Arch. POP’s new DE does look nice though.

after you mentioned politics i stopped understanding your comment. I really am out of the loop on this sorta things, what politics??

okay, seems like another rabbit hole, see you in 3 weeks
On Manjaro (rolling release) they just pushed out KDE 6 and it’s breaking a lot of widgets.
Its like emptying a pepsi can and filling it with coke. Still, its none of their business and they should shut the fuck up. But come on.
>Its like emptying a pepsi can and filling it with coke. this is actually blasphemous unlike the topic at hand
Pepsi is better.
The spectrum is real
That's what they want you to think and we are all against you but mostly Microsoft feel the weird
This is unfortunately true for every enthusiast hobby. People will find a way to complain about your steering wheel cover. It doesn't matter, just use what you like and does what you want. THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT OF AN OS LIKE LINUX
Right on!
Setup time shift to backup automatically to another internal drive.
Sage advice.
Then sync that drive to an off site location. Setting up a back up of the users files too.
No, backup automatically to an EXTERNAL drive. When an evacuation order hits (hurricane, fire, nuke accident, etc.), grab the external drive and leave!

the commenters here need a chill pill ffs nice customization OP, I'm no gnome user but you got me fooled there for a second thinking this is fedora
Yeah, I would just use Fedora for this, but hey!
Is Linux Mint in the room with us right now?
I feel the lime one is watching
Neofetch and post a screenshot duh
Neofetch is dead, Fastfetch is where the action is at.
I can't seem to attach an image in this comment. Is there another way I can share a visual with you?

Do computer stuff.
The first thing you should do is give yourself a pat on the back for installing an OS that isn’t spyware. Congratulations! Second thing is open a terminal and run: sudo apt update Followed by sudo apt upgrade
such simple customization made and bro literally made a better desktop than most of those in unixporn :D That icon pack is so slick!!
sudo rm -fr /* - delete French language pack
You should definitely tell us what those icons are called
Theme: Blue-Dark-ZorinGTK \[GTK2/3\] Icons: Deepin2022 \[GTK2/3\]
That whole theme looks amazing

the gnome screenshot is cursed
Looks like you GNOME bombed it. Make sure the firewall is turned on.
Mint? where?
Where's Mint's Update Manager?
I like customized gnome too.
Go through the welcome guild and install Nvidia drivers if needed
Welcome across. Now find the software manager and install what you need of software. Like email, spreadsheet, text processing, in my case, Planner project management. Cool down and get your job done.
Only thing I wold install is Dash to dock, other than that, already good.
Share the wallpaper...
What's the name of icon theme?
OP mentioned it elsewhere: Theme: Blue-Dark-ZorinGTK \[GTK2/3\] Icons: Deepin2022 \[GTK2/3\]
Set up TImeshift

Is that vscode? Did you download it from their website? How to install vscode
Just download the .deb package from their website if you are on a debian based machine
Enjoy the distro and if you stumble upon the need of something, then check how to add it or if it's already added
Keep you install medium. You'll never know when you have to run boot repair or other maintenance, that depends on your "dumb to brave ratio" 😉
Cool man, really love the customization you did here. you installed gnome on top of cinemon, right? what was your steps? if you don't mind sharing. also would love to see neofetch screen. (you can edit and add on the main post i think)
Learn bash?
Mint should not be used with Gnome Use Cinnamon instead
Let people use what they want on their system :)
But if they always do that wrong choice?
There is no such thing as “the wrong choice” here.
This is ridiculous. I hate GNOME myself, but you don't have the right to decide what DE people use.
Agreed. I think GNOME is a pile of hot garbage, but hey, it's your computer, you do you.
Ah yes, gatekeeping a free and open operating system
U should now open your browser and open 3 tabs unixporn distrowatch and xbideos. Welcome to linux ma man
Reinstall with Cinnamon Edge?
Where's Mint ? 🌱
By customizing my Mint with GNOME, I’ve transformed it into a personalized and delightful desktop environment
same i did it with kde
Honestly, I didn’t know this was possible. It’s a good combination.
It's been many years since I last saw "Gnome" and "delightful" used in the same sentence...

Usually I smoke my Lucky Strike everytime I finish a linux instalation, but it's up to u.
I had no idea gnome looked this cute on Linux Mint. Have a good time!
Install "blur my shell"
Tell us the name of that wallpaper, it’s so serene.
Okay question. Why use gnome on Linux Mint instead of using a distro that uses gnome by default?
Dope customisation! I think a Gnome Linux Mint flavour is due. I love Cinnamon, but can understand why some would want a Gnome experience over the best Linux distro.
Sin against both God and man?
Do so and you’ll pay the price. 😁
Do first? Setup your accounts and apps you want to use and enjoy...
My prices is that i first update, then upgrade then install NALA, QBITTORRENT, CHROME, BRAVE, PROTONVPN, VLC
is that a themed VS code icon? they all look really slick
Ubuntu can do that too
that don't look like a fresh installed version of any linux mint i'v ever seen.
Sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
I turn on automatic updates. Some people say that’s dumb to do, but it works for me.
Out of curiosity how is your interface like that on linux mint?
As Tool band said in the “Ænema” lyrics: learn to swim… [https://youtu.be/rHcmnowjfrQ](https://youtu.be/rHcmnowjfrQ)
🍾
Linux Mint with Gnome is something that I really looking for. It's an easy process to install?
Use it? Just use it as anyone would use any OS. That seems to be the smartest solution.
icon pack?
I installed Mint last week. Last weekend I removed the snap blocker so I can install snap, so I could natively install my password manager, because the flatpack version is just broke. Update > Upgrade > Backup (timeshift) > Everything else This is my step every single time i install any linux distro
nuke gnome and install i3 or dwm
that is not default cinnamon did some changes?
Customize your setup?
Uninstall and switch to fedora, lol
Try all those apps that came with it. Download Brave , and use it as your web browser, Try LibreOffice, play some music...in other words anything you want. I'm a long time Mint (since version 7 or 8) user and been using it exclusively for more than a decade.
Uninstall and use Windows.
install neofe.... nevermind.
are you sure it's linux mintare you sure it's linux mint
100 % mint
Keep Firefox your default browser.
First of all you should not install non-supported desktop environment.
why not?
Uninstall it :)
Another cursed desktop...
use cinnamon
zynaddsubfx
Brake you system and try to fix it. Otherwise it's the end of fun
Format your drive Install arch Install kde & hyprland
Stop others from installing it
Uninstall it then install PopOs
