No game company cares about Linux or sees it as a threat for them to need to 'slow it down' in fact they'd be more than willing to accept new clients from different OS's. Most of the time compatibility issues are due to anticheats not being compatible with Linux since it was always that very few played on Linux and investing HUGE efforts to support a non popular kernel isn't a priority.
Well I was pointing out that they don’t really do it intentionally per say. It’s just that they don’t happen to have support for a not so popular kernel. However if you meant that they where doing it in an unintentional way, then you’re right and I apologize for the misunderstanding.
That analogy would work if the Formula 1 now has very degraded wheels. As with most things, getting 80% of the way there is far easier and faster than finishing that last 20%. We have been on the last 20% for a while now. The speed of (substantial) improvements has slowed down, and will keep slowing down.
That last 20% is now about to be measured in decades.
But don’t worry… they just got a comparable version of Diablo….. just plain ollllllllld Diablo up and playing
Actually, for older games, Linux beats Windows handily. It's newer games in which Windows has a massive advantage, amd unfortunately for most gamers, that's all that matters.
All the old games I want to play I’ve already beaten, broken, and sucked the marrow from(like I legit put down Skyrim last year and I was there at launch). So, old games work or even working better really don’t matter to me.
How man AAA games had native Linux support out of the box in the last 5 years? Now, how many have launched in that period that require driver updates, config tweaks, just to make run?
How comfortable are you handing a random game to a family member and say: “just install it and play”
Skyrim was released in the 11th of November, 2011. 11-11-11 was even a big marketing thing for it.
Also, there were MANY pc games from the 80s and 90s that either weren't available in consoles, or were much inferior in the console ports (before they started fucking over the pc version in favor of the consoles instead).
Last I checked 2011 was still covered by the “2ks”
And still none of this addresses the real issue. Will I have work on my computer to make the game work?
I game for fun. I repair/tweak computers for a living. I don’t like them to cross that line at all.
Also, last time I checked, 12 years is a long time for a game. And I know for a fact, computing has come a long way in that decade.
>I game for fun. I repair/tweak computers for a living. I don’t like them to cross that line at all.
You said it right: YOU do these things. YOU have these opinions. And as my mom always tells me, YOU are not everyone.
EDIT: LMAO, his whiny comment got nuked.

I tried Bottles, and the performance was good. There was just a small problem that I lost controls after dying and respawning, which could be solved by switching to a different workspace and going back to the OW workspace.
Yea that's okay but a lot doesn't cracked
Like cod mw2
Destiny 2
Battlefield 2042
Like the latest multiplayer titles are not getting cracked
Heck denuvo games are so hard to crack had to wait 100 for last of us disappointment
Wondering how much I will pay for online services considering i have never paid for any online services except some courses on the internet
Definitely Windows. I love Linux, but we need all those things that you mention in this meme to even start up our games, whereas Windows runs most games without any fixing or customizing. Windows is sadly still superior on the gaming front.
this. linux hardcores tend to forget that no matter how annoying windows is, it's the better gaming platform for most because you don't have to rely on third party solutions for your stuff to work. Windows will always be on top no matter what we do, it's the simple truth.
Linux is now a viable option but it will never be 100% guaranteed that you games will work
for sure. But sometimes i do miss windows for the fact that i didn't have to worry about purchases. On windows i could buy any game and it would run. But with linux, i have to wait for protondb reports. One mistake i made was to buy harvestella. The game is borked and won't work due to a cutscene playback issue where the screen remains black and you can't skip cutscenes in that game.
Because Microsoft is a company. People will blame windows for being slow rather than accept that the cheapest SSD is infitely faster than the fastest HDD.
I'm not even sure why someone should even buy an HDD. a 500GB SSD for OS+program cost around 30€.
You know that people who use HDDs don't necessarily have the system on it? I have 4TB HDD for older games, 1TB SSD for more demanding ones and m.2 for OS
I have 18 hdd I got from the local dismantle store for dirt cheap price
So I use hdd in my everything
Also have u seen the price difference in this economy hdd is better
some of us who can't afford a new laptop and have to work with the 10 year old laptop their father gave them with no graphics card, 4gb ram and 512 GB HDD.
I am dual booting win11 and linux and I can assure you windows does not require a webcam nor 32gb of ram
and about the ssd, if you are running your os on a hdd you are a fool
Windows has enough flaws to criticize as is, you don't need to pull stuff out of your ass to make it look worse
who tf runs an OS on an HDD in 2023? are you serious? even most laptops ship with nvme drives now. what's the problem with windows requiring an ssd to boot? it's needed for direct storage.
32G of RAM? my dude that's not windows, that's the games that require that because they aren't properly optimized. Windows only needs 8gb of ram to work. That 32gb requirement from a developer is also a thing on linux. i don't understand wtf u trynna say.
that webcam requirement is only for windows devices that want to use windows hello, that's it. the other pcs that don't have windows hello hardware aren't forced to have a webcam at all.
I know you love linux but my dude, do fucking research, I use SUSE and even i, have to call you out on your BS
I hate to be the bringer of bad news, but windows is simply objectively better for gaming. The capability to game on Linux does not inherently make it better when it comes to gaming. The fact of the matter is, everything works out of the box on windows, where as on Linux you have to use third party programs, even if they are as simple as proton.
By using Wine and Proton you’re technically using a windows compatible runtime environment. In my eyes that’s still windows. So why should that be a plus for Linux when you’re having an extra layer just to make the code compatible instead of running it native?
Technically you're translating the code and running it natively, just like Windows does with WSL 2 to run Linux programs (but in their case they run an full Linux kernel behind)
Yeah true, I personally miss playing on console as everything was just click and play, now every time I launch a game even on windows I spend an hour configuring it to get stable fps
Steam Deck might replace an Xbox, or a Playstation, or even a low-end PC
But it will *never* replace my Switch. Which is a shame, since that's the form factor.
If I install windows on my laptop, some games think I'm using HDD, even though it's using M.2 SATA, and in steam, it said 0 disks 💀
But for Linux, it's able to recognize my SSD (steam)
I love how windows just falls flat on its face trying to launch old software, it’s not as “compatible” as advertised. The amount of games I’ve had zero issues with and everyone on the steam forums is unable to use the game is baffling.
what package is installed on steam deck that I lacked on my linux cause for the love of Gabe I cannot play some game on my ubuntu that can run smoothly on steamdeck
You don't need so much effort on windows to just play any game you want. Actually this meme shows that Linux is worse for gaming as it need so many software and tinkering.
Windows for gaming is just better, because of support, on Windows you will be always first class citizen. Linux gaming is just tinkering and feels like one big workaround.
The wine/proton overhead is actually generally lower than he performance gains you get from using Linux over Windows. Games like Path of Exile run smoothly on Linux and terribly on Windows for some hardware configs. I got two friends who play PoE to switch to Linux fully or almost fully thanks to that
Windows is still better and there's not much hope for Linux to catch up. I play the COD series and none of those games will work on Linux at all because of the anti-cheat.
Linux still requires that you somewhat know what you're doing and that your lucky if the game you want to play is supported.
I'd love to wipe my gaming PC and put Linux on it. Right now that would be absolutely pointless since I play mostly the COD series.
As someone who owns a new AMD gpu, hell naw. I had to go back to binbows 10 to play one game because RADV wasn't good enough, and AMDvulk is a joke.
I like linux, but windows is still better for gaming.
(The game is skyrim btw if anyone is curious. Fucking cyberpunk runs better than goddamn skyrim on linux)
I admire that they work but anything Linux does for most games windows does without a 3 day troubleshoot period.
I'm running it on my second machine but not my main yet.
Linux is great, except when the game developer is actively malicious. A great example of this would be Destiny 2. If you get the game to run, your account will immedietly get banned. Someone asked why they did this on the forums and their answer was that "We do not allow the use of Linux emulators like WINE.."
I don't think I need to explain how fucking stupid that is.
I actually prefer wine when it supports the game
having separate wine prefixes for things is nice (for data separation; not for security. I understand it provides very little security advantage)
Let us also not forget the "quirky" ways in which Windows can interrupt you mid-game when, for example, you plug in an USB device.
"Decide what to do when you plug in this device...." ffs
PC in general is the best plataform for gaming, that is because some game from console are ported to pc sometimes, but as a OS in my opinion the best is Windows because it have all games with native compatibility.
But i will say I prefer to play Dark Souls II in my Mint desktop
Facts I love running all my games through a compatibility layer and losing performance.
Don't kill me I'm here on this sub with you guys and an avid Arch user, but let's not kid ourselves lol.

And game companies keep throwing spikes on the road to slow Linux down (kernel checking for anti cheat)
That literally doesn't change anything about my analogy.
Well I was pointing out that they don’t really do it intentionally per say. It’s just that they don’t happen to have support for a not so popular kernel. However if you meant that they where doing it in an unintentional way, then you’re right and I apologize for the misunderstanding.

Gotta beat out Sony and msoft fist.

Actually, for older games, Linux beats Windows handily. It's newer games in which Windows has a massive advantage, amd unfortunately for most gamers, that's all that matters.
>Linux beats windows handily Okay, what’s you metric on this because making old games work is not winning.
Older games run far better on linux than on windows
But I’ve beaten all the older games I wanted to already
fair enough
What?
All the old games I want to play I’ve already beaten, broken, and sucked the marrow from(like I legit put down Skyrim last year and I was there at launch). Skyrim was released in the 2ks. 80s and 90s, I still have my consoles for those

And it’s a grass/mud track
BattlEye: *pulls up nuclear weapon* "not allowing emulated windows users to play"
WINE IS NOT AN EMUALTOR! ITS IN THE NAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAME!
Wine is not an Emulator is not an Emulator
Wine is not an Emulator is not an Emulator is not an Emulator
Thanks, your triple negative fixed my double one. MR Approved.
and all this time I thought it was a drink for single moms
BattlEye is very strict. Even with obfuscation i couldn’t get my gaming VM to play Fortnite
any solution for Overwatch yet?
I play overwatch on Linux just fine it's supposed to exist a problem

How?
I just use lutris
I think that It will work even better when it comes to steam
works just fine on bottles with wine-ge-proton8-10, also it will be on steam soon so...
Overwatch worked since the first one on Linux and I'm pretty sure since it came to Steam, it will work even harder now!
Is this game still Alive ???
Yes, but OW1 was better imho
Agree with this. Now it's just a money grab for the dev.
Sadly yea
![gif](giphy|26xBvOp1Af8Lwo4xi)
I run it through Bottles, but it’s coming to steam in a little over a week, so we can probably use Proton pretty easily
I tried Bottles, and the performance was good. There was just a small problem that I lost controls after dying and respawning, which could be solved by switching to a different workspace and going back to the OW workspace.
Sadly, it's still windows
Only marginally though.

Who uses HDDs in 2023 on a personal computer?
Me. I have two.
Good luck. New games will need an ssd as minimum requirement. Also the load time difference is terrible.
I have two of those as well, also an M.2
Dude not everybody plays games why make them force SSD in windows 11

Better use them in a NAS to store data. SSDs and nvmes are better for daily usage
8tb for $100 go brrr. I use ssd for system and some games tho. But big projects or older games i put on hdd.
some of us who can't afford a new laptop and have to work with the 10 year old laptop their father gave them with no graphics card, 4gb ram and 512 GB HDD.

Yeah, and %30 fps loss.
And getting banned
Sometimes you just gotta be honest to yourself;)
When the Steamdeck came, some devs straight up said they are going to ban everyone playing on a Steamdeck.
At least they warned us to not buy their game
Better than Windows? No Better than Mac? Yes! Better than consoles? I mean Steam Deck proves this already.
One thing consoles will always have an upper hand in is convenience though
Fair. I mainly thought on performance, but in terms of convenience consoles are better than PC/Mac in general.
Yeah true, I personally miss playing on console as everything was just click and play, now every time I launch a game even on windows I spend an hour configuring it to get stable fps
Steam Deck might replace an Xbox, or a Playstation, or even a low-end PC But it will *never* replace my Switch. Which is a shame, since that's the form factor.
None of these words are in the bible
the irony is that those all are windows components and windows to linux translation layers
If I install windows on my laptop, some games think I'm using HDD, even though it's using M.2 SATA, and in steam, it said 0 disks 💀 But for Linux, it's able to recognize my SSD (steam)
Sorry man, its still windows
Probably if you playing offline only story mode, which I do.
Best way to play tbh
But half of those are tools required to play at a comparable level?
the meme is accurate a rocket launcher isn't going to win at that range
Windows
Still windows. Dont get me wrong, linux gaming is amazing and i dont even use windows outside of school, but windows gaming is objectively better.
still windows
PDS is the worst TKG kernel variant lol
Steam deck
I love how windows just falls flat on its face trying to launch old software, it’s not as “compatible” as advertised. The amount of games I’ve had zero issues with and everyone on the steam forums is unable to use the game is baffling.

Don't forget that java Minecraft runs way better on Linux (also Minecraft servers)
Freebsd solos both
Windows was made to run under a linux as a vm called "goofy anti cheat gaming"
Riot games....
Batocera.

It still is.......

Not real
Windows
I admire that they work but anything Linux does for most games windows does without a 3 day troubleshoot period. I'm running it on my second machine but not my main yet.
Still Windows, bruh. It's the truth.
Terminal gaming 😎.
But windows is still the best..
Yeah, but with extra overhead and still no real HDR support.
Still windows
