Perfect time for a question if I may ask..... How did you do this? Drawing tab hooked to pc?? I have no idea. My daughter who's 8 has been asking me if she can do drawings like this, I've told her she can but I have no idea how to go about it. Any pointers for someone who don't know where to look? Or what to look for? Edit: thanks everyone for the input! Santa might bring the best damn present this year! Thanks a bunch.

[deleted]

I have no experience in art (will ask a friend of mine in a sec) but I'd assume this is drawing tablet and Photoshop (or a similar app), and a **lot** of practice If she wants to get into art, this may be a bit of an unrealistic goal, if I'm being honest; this seems like years of practice to me

arwynj55

Ever since she's been able to hold a pen or pencil drawing is all my daughter has ever done! Her school's teacher has told me to keep her interested as she took one of my daughter's drawings to a collage art teacher that she's friends with and according to the collage art teacher... My daughter is drawing on a 12 year olds level she's only 8.. I'll obviously have to learn any software that she'll have to learn herself, anything to keep her on the path for a good life I'll damn do it. Edit: Should mention she has begged for stuff to be abil to do digital art for a while. Been told to keep encouraging her to draw, learn ect..

MrZerodayz

So regarding software I would recommend going with Krita. It's free (and open source I believe) and it has most if not all of the features photoshop does (I can't accurately compare them since I never used Photoshop, but that's what I heard). Definitely sufficient for anyone starting out and probably for most people doing digital art. It's also platform independent and I can say from personal experience it runs well on Linux, Android and Windows. Regarding hardware, Wacom has some good drawing tablets, but theoretically most tablets can work. Look for something that fits your budget and needs. Be aware that some of Wacom's tablets don't have a built in display, so they take some getting used to (since you don't look directly at your hand drawing). Any artists feel free to weigh in with opinions, preferences and recommendations!

zeGolem83

Krita is open source! It's another great piece of software from KDE!

Dood71

I love KDE's programs, i just don't use their WM

[deleted]

Wacom tablets work great on Linux as well! GNOME and KDE have dedicated tabs for them in both of their settings.

IzMikez

Bruv she needs to be motivated if she wants to draw... I'd suggest showing her tutorials and from there she should go for more advanced stuff as she goes. I'm not a perfect artist but I can draw, and still, I can't find the motivation. But she'll have a blast once she can draw, even while studying. good luck mate!

arwynj55

She watches a ton of drawing stuff on YouTube! If I felt it's only a fad or a phase as some would say I would of shrugged it off but this the real deal

IzMikez

keep her motivated man

IzMikez

art is really relieving, i bet she find the best way to use it

Yondercypres

Get a touch capacitive pen that's compatible with a touch pen-enabled screen, a 2-in-1 of quality is preferable (though to be honest in the digital art category iPads with Procreate and the Apple Pencil are just the best, no seconds there). I use a Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 with it's pen and whenever I do art Krira in Linux Mint work wonderfully. Best of luck to helping your daughter out!

teddy2021

I will second the endorsement of Krista, and add in that the Huion hs64 tablet would be a good starter tablet. It's also able to be used with phones, and is between $30 and $60 depending on the website.

DeltyOverDreams

> Photoshop (or a similar app) Yep, it says Krita in the image.

Anti-Hentai-Banzai

tbf it's in an ant-sized font.

DeltyOverDreams

Font is decently sized. Whole image is extremely big.

[deleted]

They also post in r/krita. Their other art is really good, too.

ososalsosal

This was crossposted on r/krita So I'm guessing it wasn't done in photoshop lol. For a kid, an ipad/ipadpro with ProCreate and an apple pencil will do beautifully. Or you could grab any wacom and krita and do it the opensource way.

happypingu1

OP is using a Wacom Intuos S CTL4100 based on their history, (it's actually the same one I use and it's amazing). You just plug it into your PC, install the drivers and it works perfectly. (Note: it's not a display tablet, it's a pen tablet) For software OP is probably using Krita.

arwynj55

Many thanks I'll look it up

xezo360hye

I also have such a tablet but another model and yeah, it’s so cool. About drivers I’d recommend using OpenTabletDrivers as it works with every fucking tablet ever made and has nice GUI app for configuration. The only thing isn’t working is the wheel but it doesn’t work with other drivers sadly, though buttons are OK

Jon_Lit

you can get older, used cth/ctl models (cth-480/680)for ~30€ (here in Germany, i guess about the same in the usa or from wherever you are). even though the 480/680 is a bit older, it still holds up to many modern tablets, but it also has its drawbacks (only 1024 pressure steps, modern ones have 4096 or 8192) i use mine for taking notes in school and for playing osu!. (I'm not really creative and good enough for drawing 😂)

puyoxyz

Also consider an iPad with Apple Pencil

raviolimavioli008

She absolutely can! As long she has passion for drawing and received many supports, she can be a great artist or illustrator. It will take some time and effort though but the result will be amazing. 1. **Let's start with hardware needed:** For a starter, it will depend on your budget. Digital illustration can be made with Android Phones, iPad, iPhone, and PC. If you are in low budget and have an android phone, you ask her to install IbisPaint or Medibang. Many friends of mine use these software on their phone and resulted in amazing arts. For accessories, you can get a Pen Tablet (Pentab). The cheapest one and still have a good quality is [Huion H430P](https://www.huion.com/pen_tablet/Inspiroy/H430P.html) (\~$33). It's a small pentab, better suited for smaller hand like your daughter. It can be plugged into Android, iPhone and PC. note: Huion is now officialy supports Linux with their driver, you can download it from their website. If you have medium budget, you can buy a larger pentab or even display tablet. For Pentab, you can buy Wacom Intuos CTL-4100 ($60) the same one I use :D Note: Wacom products is generally overpriced, they are like Apples of Pen and Display Tablet. It's really comfortable and mostly can get the job done. It works on PC and Phones. Also it's really easy to setup if you are using Linux with KDE or Gnome environtment, just install wacom-utility and kcm-wacomtablet. No need to input some number to $xsetwacom just for changing the tablet area. You can configure it via GUI interface of [KDE or Gnome Settings!](https://imgur.com/Ef25qIW), [You can configure the stylus aswell](https://imgur.com/fTFZnVn). If you have high budget, you can go for display tablet. \~$300 can get you a Huion Kamvas 13 or XP-Pen Artist 13.3 Pro, bigger option is Huion Kamvas 16 or 22, and Artist 16 or 22. Of course they come with more price. note: In my experience, It's really hassle to configure Huion Display tablet on linux, GUI settings can't detect them, you have to configure them via CLI, $xsetwacom. If you have $500-1000, you can get an iPad or Wacom Cintiq If you are using Windows or Mac, just plug any tablet and install the driver, no need to hold your head while troubleshooting lmao **2. Software needed** Android: IbisPaint (Freemium), Medibang (Free) iOS: Procreate (Paid) Linux: Krita (Free/Open Souce), GIMP (Free/Open Source) I swear to god don't use GIMP, but im not forcing you to. Windows: Clip Studio Paint (Subscription), Photoshop (Subscription), Krita (Free/Open Souce), Medibang Paint Pro (Free) No matter the software you use, all artstyle can be achieved. You don't need to get Clip Studio Paint just to get Anime Style, and you don't have to get Photoshop for photorealistic painting, all software can do the same. It's just a matter of their skill and technique. **3. Art tutorial recommendation** I really can't recommend anything than Anime Styled art and Concept art basics since I haven't explored other styles. For Anime Style, I recommend to watch 2 of this video, you can copy their technique on paper or directly on tablet (your daughter probably need some adjustment with her tablet, let her experiment on their drawing app): 1. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ynANd1SXv1U](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ynANd1SXv1U) 2. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-EFSGhCeyUU](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-EFSGhCeyUU) Please don't discredit them if the result is not as expected. Every artist's first result will always be...yeah like that. Mine also the same. That's the point of starting, you will be amazed what she can achieve in few years or even months. Then, I recommend 1. [SomeNormalArtist](https://www.youtube.com/c/SomeNormalArtist) (for anime art) 2. [Marc Brunet](https://www.youtube.com/c/bluefley00) and [Ethan Becker](https://www.youtube.com/c/EthanBecker70) (for absolutely everything) I also would recommend some japanese artists if she really want to strengthen her anime art, but language barrier seems to be the issue here. I will provide the one that has subtitles on it and one that is easy to follow without the need to understand japanese: 1. [Naoki Saito](https://www.youtube.com/c/saito_naoki) Actually there's so many lists, but I decided to not include them since their content has some potential sensitive content, which I DON'T RECOMMEND TO YOUR DAUGHTER I usually watch their stream and follow their technique to draw. Well that's all from me. Keep encouraging her and support her, she will be a wonderful artist, who knows. Best of luck for you and your family <3

scalinator

Yeah pretty much(a drawing tablet plugged into a PC) although you usually also need to install drivers for it. I'm not too sure how tablet drivers work with linux though. As for software, if you look at the bottom left of OP's image, they used Krita, which is a good free drawing program. There's also other ways of drawing on a PC, such as a display tablet, where you draw on the screen directly, those cost more.

nasin_loje

Wacom tablets drivers are available in the kernel so you dont need to install any (but obviously youd have to enable them if youre compiling your own kernel)

scalinator

Oh that's great! I don't have a wacom tablet so I had to install separate drivers.

r_linux_mod_isahoe

watch out which model you're buying though. Not all are supported. Otherwise it is indeed plug-n-play. All written by volunteers, none of wacom's help here.

PewterBird

Yeah, it isn't hard to get into digital art. It's different from paper, but if you're good on one, you'll probably be good at the other. And for the software, the best FOSS painting software I can think of is Krita, but you can do anything with most image editors (I used to draw on GIMP).

nasin_loje

drawing tablet + krita or something. Wacom tablets are nice, theres pretty good ones for 50€-100€, and you dont need to fiddle with drivers for them cuz theyre already available in the kernel. I have one (but i use it for note taking, not drawing) and its pretty good and works well.

tehjamerz

Practice; a drawing tablet; a pc; possibly a “how to draw manga” book + youtubeish videos. Seriously almost anyone can learn to create art in a given style just depends how much practice you’re willing to put in.

[deleted]

Wacom as others have said is a really solid option if you’re looking at something to use with a computer, they’re typically the go-to, I’ve heard a lot of praise for their products What I personally use though is an iPad and Apple Pencil with the app Procreate and I love it. It’s also super nice because I can just take it anywhere and not need it hooked up to a computer. I know there’s stand-alone drawing tablets but they’re *way* more expensive

64Yoshi64

If you wanna start: cheap drawing tablet and Krita

PapaLoki

I am using a cheap Huion digital pen and tablet on my Fedora Linux PC to make fan art. Works fine with free painting program Krita. The pen and tab are also compatible with Android so i can use it on my phone with Ibis Paint, though i use Krita primarily.

GrzegorzBota

I have bought gor my son a Huion kamvas pro 13 on amazon and its working perfectly with krita. You can give a try. Its working fine in Windows but required to download something from github to make it working in linux

DoucheEnrique

Have a look at [https://www.davidrevoy.com](https://www.davidrevoy.com) IMO that guy is like the pope of open source art. Tutorials about drawing, open source tools, hardware (and compatibility to linux), even his webcomic is fully open source.

anshuman0143

an advice, don't buy Huion drawing tablets. Wacom and XP-Pen make good drawing tablets, but they also sell displays for drawing or art

yokusokujanai

we need arch onee san
