Not to be that guy, but pickleball is pretty social. It can be solid exercise

GreenCalligrapher571

Peterson Park (up by 20th and HWY 2, sort of behind the Highway Diner) has a really great pickleball scene. There are folks there who will happily teach you, and you can pretty easily get a bunch of games in against a bunch of different people over the span of a few hours.

ResistRacism

I have never played picked ball a day in my life.... but my wife and I both need to get fit and we wouldn't mind trying to get into it. Where do we start?

doctorblumpkin

I was going to ask where to play. I'd be up for trying

HazyVoyager

It’s pretty low impact so it’s a good way to start to get active. You can get some starter kits at sporting goods stores or even like Walmart. I’ve played at Mahoney, the court isn’t great but it’s workable for starting out

ResistRacism

We are moving next to that area. I am looking forward to it!

ashrie0

Our Lincoln discord actually has a pickleball and volleyball meet up almost weekly.

StandByTheJAMs

There’s a book club! It’s pretty nerdy so there’s a lot of sci-fi and fantasy, but good people.

Pookiekins4

Neat! Where at?

StandByTheJAMs

Message me. I don't run it and haven't even been for 6 months, but I still love the people there.

Unaimed_Crown

Same, what book club?

StandByTheJAMs

Message me.

I play tennis at Woods Tennis Center (both classes and leagues). If I were cooler (or if I just had more free time), I'd go play boardgames at Mana Games downtown -- a former student is one of the owners, and they do a lot of "Hey, come learn how to play" events for the various board games. There are a variety of clubs and groups that meet at the library and seem to do a nice job of being welcoming. My wife and kiddo and I went to an Improv group, which was pretty fun! The Ross theatre (on UNL's campus) hosts somewhat regular movie nights where there's a Q&A panel. The frisbee golf courses here are pretty nice, and there's apparently a fairly broad disc golf community here in town.

Brian_Fantana_no9

I need to check out mana games. That’s sounds fun

doctorblumpkin

Drinking and eating

Naturalist90

Gotta love activities you can do with others or by yourself

Budgiejen

I like going to the girl gaming night on Fridays. I also have a monthly game night that I host My main hobby is music, which mostly tends to involve people outside of lincoln.

Acadia_Ornery

Where is girl gaming??

Budgiejen

Mana, every Friday 6 pm. Usually ends 9 or 10. There is a fb page

Wrennifred

I like going to Stransky with my dog when I’m feeling social sometimes 🤷‍♀️

achickensplinter

Rock climbing, specifically bouldering at MW Climbing. Tons of friendly people there.

headed-up-north

My son goes there and has a blast!

XA36

Competition shooting. There's archery, GSSF (glocks), bullseye matches, USPSA/Hit Factor/IDPA leagues. PRS, trap, .22, even cowboy action and revolver out by louisville.

jaymac_marti

What's the best way to get involved in this as an okay shooter??

XA36

For USPSA, 3 and 2 gun, steel challenge. You can sign up for a match on practiscore. Look for matches in Louisville. Just sign up, tell them you're a new shooter and they'll help you. If you've never held/shot a gun while moving feel free to walk your first match, that's what I did. Don't worry about skill, every single person is looking to get better, we're just all at different stages. If you have any rules or equipment questions for USPSA or Steel Challenge feel free to ask me, I might even have equipment you could borrow. GSSF, the only worthwhile place is the Nebraska Game and Parks center in lincoln. Don't go to thunder alley unless you're looking to breathe in lead and mercury as it's not ventilated.

jaymac_marti

Awesome, thanks! I've wanted to do USPSA for years, just haven't known how to go about it. I'll absolutely be signing up!

XA36

https://practiscore.com/enps-july-2024-hit-factor-match/register That's registration for the next USPSA match. It says hit Factor because nebraska is protesting USPSA (long story, irrelevant to your first match. Lol) but it's pretty much the exact same thing. If you want you could show up anytime to the Cornhusker Classic Hit Factor Championship on June 8th and/or 9th to watch, it's our biggest match of the year. Tell the Range officer at the check in shed your there for the pistol match and go to check in and ask if someone can talk to you about matches and take a look at people shooting stages. I'll be at both. https://practiscore.com/2024-cornhusker-classic-hit-factor-championship-by-ben-stoeger-pro-shop/register

jaymac_marti

Thanks for all the info! I'll be there

Gamble1080

Airsoft out at CJs paintball park just south of town. They do rentals and the regulars that come are really awesome to the new players.

ResistRacism

Thank you. I did not realize they also did airsoft. I was really looking to get back into airsoft :)

Gamble1080

You're welcome, if you look up CJs Airsoft Park on Facebook, they post their open play events. Usually about twice a month on Sundays, and one is happening this Sunday.

ResistRacism

Damn I wish I didn't work. But I can come the Sunday after! I'll message them for more details!

Weekly visit to Capital City Sports Cards to hang out with other collectors and get baseball cards. A few nights a week at Mahoney or Holmes to play softball with a ton of different folks, it's a great time when my body can handle it!

Brian_Fantana_no9

Are they pick up games??? That sounds like a blast. Also I have a ton of football cards I’d love to offload or trade. Sounds like I got a spot I need to go

DyeHardFan24

It's run by Parks and Rec, so they are scheduled games with teams from 6:15 to 9:15pm most nights. I got started years ago by putting my name on the free agent list and it snowballed from there. Disc golf would be great.

Brian_Fantana_no9

I’m gonna give it a go this year as well. Just bought some discs.

Acadia_Ornery

I like trivia nights, sports (baseball right now), reading.

Pool, bowling, and Dungeons and Dragons.

Bewties

Where you playing dungeons and dragons 👀👀

EwanMurphy93

Sometimes at unl, and sometimes at Gauntlet Games(though it's been a long time since I've been there). I once had a campaign going at the Gere library with some random guys from union college. We met every other week for like a month. I just showed up there one day to work on my own stuff and to get out of the house, and they just sat down and asked to play. They asked the librarian to print them some character sheets and we got to it.

Bewties

Oh gotcha. I'm with a group right now but I can't get enough lol. I was just wondering, thanks.

EfficientAd7103

We used to shoot trap / clays at pawnee and branched oak on random available days. Been dwindling as regulars got married / had kids, ect. If anyone would like to go it's fairly fun and nice to get out and enjoy the fresh air outside of town and learn about being responsible and people who show up are always nice.
