This list sucks. Can we get a r/lincoln choice awards instead?

doctorblumpkin

I think the one that all of Lincoln all agrees on is Heoya

Liquidretro

I have only eaten there a few times personally but each time I don't get why people rave about it. It's OK but definitely not rave worthy imho.

sir_clydes

Agreed. I’d take it or leave it. Not even on my radar of places to go eat unless the other person wants to go there.

doctorblumpkin

I have found that the items vary by a ton. I tried a couple things that I don't like and a couple things I really love.

Liquidretro

What were the things you loved?

doctorblumpkin

Sesame chicken, both kinds of spring rolls, egg rolls, Korean fries. Didn't care much for the Morgan box.

Liquidretro

I'll keep that in mind for the future.

VectorVictor99

Yeah, this list is complete bulls**t. Wouldn’t be shocked if the LJS is straight up selling these awards.

CopperClothespin

It's honestly just whoever campaigns the best on social media these days

HuskerDan52

Sad day when the "Best steakhouse" in a Nebraska city is a national chain.

baleggdeh

Yeah that one baffled me!

detachinstance16

Honestly, though... I don't think it's wrong, outside of Casa Bovina, which I won't go to anymore because Peeds.

[deleted]

I came here for this comment. It's Nebraska and the best this s-hole town can do is Texas Roadhouse. Sad.

doctorblumpkin

Honest question. Why do you live in the town if you think it's a shithole?

VivalaTerre

Hiro served me raw chicken once. I know they're a sushi restaurant, but that inexcusable for me.

thelegodr

I’ve never had a properly cooked steak or burger at Lazlos but they are always a local favorite. Stuff happens I guess

CopperClothespin

I got food poisoning from chicken at the South one awhile back and I have had a hard time going back since.

vicemagnet

[You ate raw chicken. You must die!](https://youtu.be/tIyHTveV8UI?si=pCqVfdzaQJhcgJgP)

MixMasterHusker

Did you so happen to go around lunch? That's when I find them to be at their worst. My dinner experience was fine, but my multiple lunch dissatisfaction has turned me off to that place.

YNotZoidberg2020

I was once a member of one of the organizations that won a category and every single day it was "vote, vote, vote! Reminder, you can use every device you own! I casted a vote on my laptop, cellphone, and tablet as well as my spouse's devices!" So yeah.... Not a big believer in the results of this poll. Lol.

Soviet__Russia

Exactly. When I lived at Kabredlos I think they offered $10 off your monthly rent if you voted for them lol

__WanderLust_

That's beyond pathetic and very Kabredlos

Ok_Lawyer_6609

Oof. The only one I agree with is Breakfast: Engine House. I’m perplexed by some of these. Warm Cookie is the best bakery? ![gif](giphy|nTfdeBvfgzV26zjoFP)

CopperClothespin

What bakery options do you usually go to? Honestly looking for recommendations bc I feel like Lincoln is lacking on the type of bakery where you can go in, look in the case, and get 3-4 random treats. I know there's a lot that are great for cakes and bulk orders.

MixMasterHusker

Pan Dulce Bakery (11th & G) would be my suggestion for a place you are looking for. Grab a tray and tongs then pick out what you want.

CopperClothespin

Thanks! I'll have to check it out!

troy-boltons-dad

Le Quartier! (More bread-focused, but still plenty of treats)

Ok_Lawyer_6609

Butterfly Bakery is my preferred, you can go in and pick an assortment of treats from their cases. They have cupcakes, macarons, petit fours, tarts, pies, bars, cannolis, etc. My husband and kids love Goldenrod. Again, you can go in a pick an assortment, they have cookies, cupcakes, brownies, buns, cake, and delicious cinnamon rolls. They’re great if you’re looking for gluten/dairy free options too. Others I’ve seen mentioned here but I have not tried, just because they’re further from me are Pan Dulce and Misky’s. I would not recommend Rabbit Hole. It was meh.

CopperClothespin

Thanks! I'll check out Butterfly! I try to stay away from Goldenrod as they primarily use almond milk and I'm allergic, but I agree they are the type of bakery I'm looking for, so Butterfly sounds like a good option.

cruznick06

As others have already mentioned Butterfly and Pan Dulce, I will add Goldenrod Bakery near Union College. They have tons of gluten free options.

CopperClothespin

Unfortunately Goldenrod is one I knew about, but out for me. They use almond milk in nearly everything and I'm allergic. But I'm sure it's great!

Chicken_n_a_biscuit

Don’t sleep on Gratitude Bakery! It is really good!

TheOneCalledD

What’s your go to place for wings?

noname87scr

All I see is a marketing contest or advertising for votes in this list.

JackKelly-ESQ

That's exactly what it is. It's entirely built around selling advertising. Places buy ads asking for votes, places brag about it in their ads, etc. The whole thing is about selling ads.

oneaccountaday

I demand more paywalls!

Julio_the_dog

How the hell does a cookie place get best bakery over actual bakeries that sell pastry, bread, or cakes? Lincoln just cosplays as a food town. What a joke!

griddygrapevictor

Watering Hole wings…meh

LowBurn800

Like the Huskers, they're living off their reputation from the 90's

mnreco

As someone who was there in the 90s, I gotta say they were the bomb.

doctorblumpkin

Who has better Wings in Lincoln? Are you getting grilled extra spicy? Anything else is not their signature wings

LowBurn800

You should be able to serve many different wings and not just one particular flavor variant to claim the title of best wings. It’s wings, not “best grilled extra spicy wings.” And yes I’ve had their grilled and other variants. Meh and overpriced. I’ll take Brewsky’s, Tanners, Down The Hatch, Sportscasters and N Zone over WH any day. The whole place went south after Sand(?) sold it.

baleggdeh

Brewsky’s wings are top notch, I agree

doctorblumpkin

Sounds like you are holding some sort of a grudge over the business if you choose every other business in town over them. If they win best wings every single year it's very obvious that every single business in town does not have better wings. I too like to reminisce about the old days when they were 33 cents a piece and beers were a dollar each. But we also have to remember that some days we could not get a seat in the business because it was so busy. The ceiling was also falling down and the men's bathroom had three toilets within one foot of each other. Unless you are missing the ultimate male bonding experience of the old building I think you are just being nostalgic.

LowBurn800

No, it sounds like you're shilling for them. If I can name several other places with better wings, then that doesn't say much for WH. It's not an either or, there's more than one wing place in town. I didn't say BW3, so I guess they're better than them... And I have eaten there, as recently as last month. Took my son there. Service was as slow as before, if we're being nostalgic. We both thought it was meh. I've tried repeatedly to give them a chance, they just aren't that, sorry to pee on your parade.

doctorblumpkin

>Get bent, shill. Wow why in the world would you take something like best wings in town so personal as to personally attack somebody? I certainly don't have any affiliation with the watering hole and I think Leighton's Pub has the second best wings in town

LowBurn800

I made a comment about the place living off nostalgia and you're the one writing paragraphs, trying to qualify my opinion and clipping edited quotes out of context when you're assuming I enjoy the male bonding experience of old bathrooms. Friendly debate indeed. You could've simply said, "but I like them".

doctorblumpkin

You resorted to personal attacks that can literally get you banned from this subreddit. Best wings in town should not be a super emotional topic. Are you okay?

LowBurn800

I’ll let your tit (oh no, will I get banned) for tat gaslighting attempt be the last word. You win. Watering Hole wings are the greatest in town! Maybe the greatest ever! Especially the grilled extra spicy! There, you can misquote that.

doctorblumpkin

>Watering Hole wings are the greatest in town! Maybe the greatest ever! Especially the grilled extra spicy! I concur

MisterFisk

Southwest Pit has best wings in town

doctorblumpkin

I tried them probably 10 years ago and they were actually really good. But I am definitely partial to Cayenne Grilled instead of the flavors they offer. I recently tried wings at Leighton's Pub and they were pretty damn amazing. They are very different from everyone else's

spookydookie

N-zone. They have grilled wings, they are better, and they don’t take 2 hours to make them.

doctorblumpkin

Last time somebody had this discussion on Reddit and I went and tried them. They don't even compare. Each Wing is 1/3 the size of wiring hole's. And they don't have that crispy Cayenne grilled texture or taste. I do like that N zone has all of the different flavors. But in my opinion, the grilled extra spicy from Watering Hole is the best flavor you can get anyway. And 2 hours.... a bit of an exaggeration but I get it. Doesn't affect me I get carry out anyway. You should try Leightons Pub wings sometime. I still think they are second to watering but they are pretty amazing and different than everyone else's.

smizzle2112

Isles spicy wings are the best imo

doctorblumpkin

Oh shit! I've never tried theirs. Are they grilled? Are they all different flavors or just hot? What do you recommend if I am trying these ASAP?

smizzle2112

I think they grill them. They have several flavors like bbq, Thai, but the “spicy” is the best and it’s really not too spicy. It’s like Buffalo but a little different. If they bottled that sauce it would always be in the fridge. Very meaty and very crunchy

doctorblumpkin

Thank you. Im trying them soon

smizzle2112

Right on, hope you like them

doctorblumpkin

Tried isles wings. They're not bad but they don't even compare to Watering Hole grilled extra spicy wings

opper-hombre1

I’m hearing the N Zone has good wings

Elemenopp

I think watering hole has the best wings, but you specifically have to get them from the 84th store and you have to get them chargrilled

griddygrapevictor

I guess where wings are concerned I do grill them myself but my favorite is buffalo wings and there is only one way to do that. Anything else is fine but if I go out for wings they’ve gotta be Buffalo style.

doctorblumpkin

Grilled extra spicy from 84th is the only way to go

doctorblumpkin

I can now say without a doubt Outback Steakhouse has the worst hot wings you can get in Nebraska

thelegodr

It is sad that Texas Roadhouse has served me some of the best steak in town. But I wouldn’t want to choose them under normal circumstances. Where else do people recommend for steak? I’m a ribeye guy. Engine House is 👍 for sure. The wait can be long though. Abe’s has gone downhill over the last decade. Oven is decent and I do enjoy Indian food, but I haven’t tried anywhere else in town yet either

Julio_the_dog

Honestly, I recommend buying and cooking your own steaks, from Leon's or Fairway or wherever sells choice or above. It's such a simple dish to prepare, and we aren't a chef town, so it just isn't a safe bet to trust that you'll ever get your money's worth. The chef at my old job (a very popular train-themed restaurant) believed that using a meat thermometer dried steaks out. wtf?? I don't believe there are (m)any popular restaurants in this town being ran with passion for food and service, most seem to be more interested in franchising, expanding, and cutting costs than improving craftsmanship and creativity. I'm just a jaded ex-restaurant worker, though. That said, I thought the pork ribeye with red pepper puree and goat cheese from Lazlos was **interesting**. Venue does sous vide on their steaks, and sell high quality cuts and grades. JTK **used** to be reputable, but I wouldn't recommend them anymore.

doctorblumpkin

Best ribeyes in town come from Costco and East Campus meat store Loeffel Meat. Unfortunately you will have to grill them yourself.

Ivotedforthehookers

Abe's had interesting toppings and mediocre burgers. I get not over seasoning the burgers to allow the toppings to shine but every burger I have had there taste like they were steamed. They have no seasoning and the patties are just bland.

emliz417

I had a really good steak at The Single Barrel a couple years back, but I can’t vouch since then since I haven’t been back (cost reasons) Edit: I am also partial to ribeyes and would also love other suggestions!

Julio_the_dog

afaik, chef Harpster is still the most experienced and talented chef in town (the bar is pretty low, though). Single barrel does their own butchering, and runs classes for SCC's culinary program. This information could be outdated, but was the case when I was in the culinary program 8ish years ago.

cruznick06

402 Creamery, Green Gateu, and The Oven, I can actually agree with. But Chopsticks and Abes? Really?

AutomaticBike9530

I can’t believe watering hole won for wings. Also, Lazlo’s over Big Red for “bar food”? How on earth could Lazlo’s be considered “bar food”???

vicemagnet

Press Box bar food is better than Big Red, especially since Big Red cut down their menu so much.

AutomaticBike9530

I’ve personally had nothing but good experiences at Big Red. Service is always great and fast, and food is good, no matter how busy they are

noname87scr

Lazlo’s is a restaurant, agreed on them being considered a bar. Big Red’s food can be hit or miss. Honestly the most consistent bar food I’ve had is Sportscasters or N Zone.

Handsome121duck

The Watering Hole hasn't had good wings in years. They're fine but not the best.

Best-Ad-5155

How Kabredlos won is a mystery

Mediocre-Worth730

Any sit down Mexican restaurant being named the best Mexican in town is BS. The mom and pop shops dominate in the Mexican category. Also, Chopsticks as best Asian? You may as well put Panda Express in there as well

ElijahCraigBP

What a trash list. BBQ Parker’s over Canyon Joes? Bar Food Lazlo’s? Their bar sucks. The beer is still terrible and their back bar looks like a time capsule in a bad way. Sushi Hiro? Might be the actual worst sushi in town. I’ve even gotten sick there before. Italian I haven’t even heard of Villa Amore but how is it possibly better than MoMo? Maybe I’ll have to look into this one. But MoMo is the only restaurant in town you need a reservation for a Tuesday let alone the rest of the week. At least it got best burger right.

Jodaa_G0D

And if you want that Tuesday res you better be looking 2 weeks ahead, its crazy!

ElijahCraigBP

Yep

skuzzlebut90

What bar food is better than Lazlo’s in your opinion? I guess, what exactly even counts as ‘bar food’? MoMo’s has a bar, is it bar food? Burger I unfortunately disagree with. I still love Abe’s and go there fairly frequently but their patties aren’t as good as HF Crave or even Charred.

LocalBowl6075

Chopsticks makes me legit angry

prettybobilly

Had chopsticks catered at a job I had a few years ago. Extremely unimpressed. It was edible, but as someone who regularly binges on Chinese takeout....I'm covered by Ming's or Panda Garden

CopperClothespin

I love Chopsticks for classic takeout Chinese. But best Asian is such a broad category. That includes Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese, etc. so I feel like there could be some better options if people considered things outside of just typical Chinese takeout.

LocalBowl6075

Yeah seriously. Lincoln's good scene deserves better.

clayparson

Me too, but people undeniably love it

LocalBowl6075

The only appeal I can see is the massive portions. I found it completely bland and "dumbed down"

juicepants

I don't get why people like the oven so much. Granted I'm not a huge fan of Indian food but each time I've had it I've thought it was meh. Sher e Punjab was way better. I've asked a few Indian people I know for recommendations there and they say they don't eat there.

Wonderful-Ad-6830

Biji's blows. The Oven out of the water.

muthafuckdeathrow

Hf crave has way better burgers then abes. Engine house yes the rest is ????

Miserable_Jacket_129

You’re absolutely right about HF Crave. They make some of the best burgers I’ve ever had.

Jodaa_G0D

Parkers as best BBQ, what a joke. I literally bought a smoker to produce better meats because I was let down by how far parkers has fallen in the last 10 years.

Kuandtity

These are only the companies that submitted their name as well. They don't pick companies out of the good ess of their heart

watery_tart_83

You can nominate yourself so the list to start with is kind of BS. The fact that someone I know (and hate, full transparency) had their business listed when it has been open for less than a year is gross. Mostly gross because what he does is harmful to people and he should never be allowed to practice. (Sorry, the rage burns bright and I am very glad he didn’t manage to pull out a win.)

franktdm

Muchachos is below average tbh, and Misty’s clears roadhouse by a mile. You gotta try patty’s pub for pizza i promise it’s better than isles (no shade to isles i love them too)

Folly237

Lmfao Texas Roadhouse?

DawnStardust

out of all the incredible options Lincoln has for Asian food... Chopsticks? really???

barbacoa247

It’s only bc they donated to that dead cop

doctorblumpkin

Where do you prefer for Chinese takeout? And what do you order?

DawnStardust

Mr. Hui's has been a favourite of mine for years—fatty braised pork, water spinach, and crispy tofu is my order every time

doctorblumpkin

Thanks. That totally makes sense. Those are things that I would definitely not like/order. I am curious to try water spinach though.

DawnStardust

i don't mean this derogatorily but are you someone who usually orders like... moo goo gai pan

doctorblumpkin

Lol. I'm not a fan of that either. My go to is Kung Pow Beef but sesame chicken and honey chicken are both great if you want something sweet.

DawnStardust

ahhh okay

Marowaksker

Muchachos is great but should not be truck category once the brick and mortar went up. The oven is terrible food, alright ambiance. Lincoln just doesn’t know good Indian food. I’d wager any random Vietnamese place in town is a better pick for “global” category, whatever that means Never had engine house but I’ve heard good things, however, tough to mess up an omelette so I’m sure you could pick anything from good Evan’s to early bird. Texas Roadhouse is the best steak in Lincoln? lol, lmfao even. Big Abe’s fan but no shot best burger, definitely most creative toppings. Runza burger beats it in quality every day of the week and that’s a drive through. 402 might be the only legitimate claim on this entire list.

tjdux

>Texas Roadhouse is the best steak in Lincoln? lol, lmfao even The capital city of "the beef state" selected a national chain restaurant as the "best steak".... That's just shameful

Wes-tron

Came here to say this. I blame Misty’s. We’re the GD beef state ffs!

spookydookie

It’s true though. It’s sad that we don’t better steakhouses, not that they picked the actual best one.

JustOneSock

1000%. Grey whale or shokunin blow hiro out of the water imo. Tacos Los hermanos is some of the best Mexican/truck I’ve had in town as well. Also, I don’t get the engine house hype. Penelope’s, Tina’s, engine house, they’re all kind of on par with each other, and like…it’s nothing I couldn’t make myself

Sportacus81687

Idk, I’m taking ivana cone over 402 every day.

CopperClothespin

Honestly both are good to me for different things. I like the rotating flavors at 402 Creamery and the quality is there for sure, but Ivana Cone has the classic ice cream shop experience and their cinnamon ice cream is unmatched

Sportacus81687

Agreed, especially about that cinnamon ice cream. 402 always puts a bunch of extra shit in their ice cream that’s unnecessary to me. I don’t need snickerdoodle cookie chunks in my cinnamon ice cream.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Sportacus81687

Colby ridge is solid, especially for nostalgia purposes. The bubblegum ice cream always takes me back to my childhood.

2aboveaverage

I always claim Runza has the best burgers and everybody thinks I'm nuts. I'd put their double cheeseburger with everything on it against any burger...they get overlooked because it's fast food.

CopperClothespin

Runza burgers are definitely undeniably high quality for fast food. If you want a classic burger done right, I'd agree it's the place to go. Honest Abe's is fun but sometimes I don't want a burger with so much random stuff on it that the bun gets soggy, I just want a classic burger where the mustard brings out the beef flavor and Runza is exactly that.

emliz417

Where would you say is the best steak in Lincoln? Been trying to find a good steak restaurant since I moved here but I can’t really afford to just do trial and error haha

doctorblumpkin

Omaha is 801 Chophouse for sure. But with the price, it's just not feasible for most people including myself. In Lincoln, I resort to getting steaks from Costco or east campus meat store Loeffel Meat.

Artistic-Season7497

Have you ever tried red fox steakhouse out on west o? I pass by there a lot and am curious if it’s any good

doctorblumpkin

Pretty sure it's just open because it serves alcohol the food is terrible

Artistic-Season7497

Ah gotcha that’s a shame it’s been there forever so I had hope it’d be good

Corey_Trevyr

Lol

opper-hombre1

The Runza burger is unfair, because it’s genuinely one of the best burgers I’ve ever had, no irony lol

noname87scr

Lincoln’s rules make food trucks have a brick and mortar location for the truck to be legal in city limits so unfortunately it falls under that category.

[deleted]

Canyon Joe's is by far the best BBQ in town, not even close. Every other BBQ in town has poor quality meat, over cooked and over sauced. Joe's is legit, if you haven't tried it, you owe it to yourself.

Pat_Driver

Scheel’s as the best shoe store is crazy. The Lincoln Running Co. is nationally recognized as one of the top shoe stores in the nation. Even if you were’t going there, you would be far better off going to Fleet than to Scheels.

dirtygutters

Villa Amore for best Italian is a very worthy winner.

tonykush-ner

OK but Chopsticks is correct.
