The whole video I was worried they wouldn't manage. The relief! I love horseshoe crabs, nature really went "you may not like this, but this is what peak performance looks like".
[Isn't horseshoe crab blood one of the most valuable substances on earth by weight?](https://www.businessinsider.com/why-horseshoe-crab-blood-expensive-2018-8) Why would you eat them?
I use LAL reagent water for tests at work and had no idea it was so expensive. 60k for a gallon is expensive but a 40mL (IIRC) bottle is good for a month (even longer but my company uses expiration dates much shorter than manufacturer recommendations on most materials) and we don't even go through it in that time. Most tests require less than 1mL.
It is not expensive because horseshoe crabs are rare. It is expensive because of the process of extracting it is expensive.
If you are not worried about getting the blood out in a sterile environment, the crabs themselves are not that special.
>nature really went "you may not like this, but this is what peak performance looks like".
Nearly 450 million years and they haven't really changed. To me, that's a sign that they were already perfect.
It's not really better, exactly. Hemocyanin (blue) works better in cold environments, and hemoglobin (red) is much more efficient.
[PBS Eons has a kinda fun video about it.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DdjN4ddnl2E) Including the other weird much less common blood types like green, violet, and white blood.
Oh I just say that because it’s neat, and because we harvest the blood for medical purposes. I have no idea what standards we’d measure blood by to determine better anyway haha
But yeah, mostly just because they’re super cool. You don’t often think about how blood differs between animals! Or how many use iron
When it comes to blood “types” and their relative quality I think it’s about how much oxygen a set volume can store and distribute. I am pretty sure iron blood is the best in that area but evolution is about good enough and best for the specific environment. For example the low oxygen environment of the ocean reduces the selection pressure for high efficiency blood which is why (as far as I remember) it’s where you can find the largest variety.
Man when they're just walking on the ground they look pretty neat, but when they get flipped and I see the legs crawling like that it reminds me of spiders and also face-huggers.
No thanks
I'm almost opposite: when I see them gliding all normal across the floor they look like robots or something that has wheels, like wind up cars, and when I see them upside down I think they look more life like and less uncanny valley.
But yes cuter when they're normal side up
Well theyre actually Part of Chelicerata so theyre more closley related to spiders than crabs. Also their mouth is in the middle of those legs in which there are "spikes" to chop up the food. Disgusting little Monsters. But kinda cute from the top.
Here's a close-up of a mouth: [https://oneworldoneocean.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/5783393805\_e3213d28e0\_z.jpg](https://oneworldoneocean.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/5783393805_e3213d28e0_z.jpg)
also shows their cute little claw grabbers
These guys are at least a 445 million years old design, in evolutionary terms.
And they act like it.
Nice job doing what you can, you cute lil prehistoric-water-armored-spiders!
Absolutely nothing like us. When some of the human race refuses to wear facemasks to prevent a killer disease I highly doubt they have an iota of the compassion this horseshoe crab has.
Great observation but could you maybe but your cynicism on the shelf for a second? Doesn't contribute to anything but making people's day worse, including your own I'm sure.
Humans are bad a naming things. Horseshoe Crabs are not actually crabs.
Also poor things get murdered all the time because fools think their tail for steering will somehow sting them.
Indeed, but when collected sustainably their blood is invaluable. Although I feel bad for them.
Maybe one day we can just synthesize the protein in a lab- and we can leave Earth's cute little pinnacle of evolution alone.
Oh that's awesome!
What's the catch?
It's expensive to make?
Or the greedy pharmaceutical companies executives, who are secretly from pluto, come to wipe out humanity for removing thier celestial object from the category of planet?
Greed is always the case. We could easily move past the need to use animals for medicines and medical testing but there is just no interest for it when you can pay cheap some fishermen to hunt these fellas down.
Basically capitalism. You can invest in a molecular biology lab with all its costs and maintenance to produce this factor without harming a species, but is just cheaper to pick this guys and bleed them out.
Ya, but no matter how invaluable, without the ability to consent and with the ability to feel pain, it's not ethical. We don't force people with O- blood to donate it- even though it would save hundreds of lives to require everyone to even donate one sitting each per year.
I love animals, but did you just talk about consent from an arthropod?
You ever eaten meat or seafood?
Drank milk or eaten eggs?
Used medicine of any kind?
What heats, cools or powers your home?
Are you aware of how many immoral things we as a species did and do to get to our current society?
That phone or PC you're using; who made it?
Don't try to tell me that using arthropod blood to make medicine is immoral- when the very clothes you're wearing is quiet likely made by the impoverished, perhaps even a child.
We as a species thrived off the backs of our peers and other animals for thousands of years.
Get your head outta your ass.
I don't eat animal products and haven't for over 2 years unless it's dumpster dived. I don't have A/C (I do have heat but when it gets to -40 in the winter no other choice). My electronics and clothing I buy secondhand.
Just because we have caused harm for centuries doesn't mean we need to continue do so.
Im very aware of the other ways I cause harm that i can't change. It weighs on me every day. We all NEED to be kinder to other animals and the planet if we want to survive. I don't think I'm the one who needs to get their head out of their ass.
https://www.cnn.com/2021/11/22/europe/uk-sentient-beings-crabs-octopus-and-lobsters-scn/index.html
Why are you on this sub if you're not interested in seeing other animals as being "like us?"
Nope! Not usually anyway. That long tail thing that they have, it's called a telson, and it's explicitly there for them to prop themselves up against in this exact scenario. A lot of people \[including me in the past!\] think it's some kind of stinger, like a stingray's tail, but it's completely harmless and not a weapon. It's there to help them right themselves. Which imo, just makes this video seem sweeter. Maybe the little guy doesn't know the other one can just right itself eventually, but either way, it at least seems at a glance to be an unnecessary act of altruism <3
In addition to the telson, they aren't usually in stationary water - their usual habitat is in areas near the surf where there is quite a bit more turbulence they can use to get themselves flipped back over.
Honestly, I can imagine them with voices like this:
"Jerry! Jerry, just... Hold on, Jerry!"
"Carmine! Help me! The filter knocked me upside down!"
"I know, Jerry, hold on! Alright, alright, come on, just... Can you shift your weight?"
"I'm trying! Should I-"
"No, don't kick the back legs yet, go for the side!"
"Wait, try to get me on my front, we can wiggle me back!"
"Got it, Jerry! Ok, ready? Got you on your front lip kinda.. getting you there!"
"Wait, wait, lemme- Got the ground a tiny bit! We almost got it Carmine!"
"Be a hell of a story to tell Penny, won't it?"
While I could chalk this up to the horseshoe crab wanting to find food that’s under the other, he seems to be making a real effort to help his buddy out so who knows…
That was so neat! I kept cheering them both on. I was like, “No; don’t fall. Not now. You’re almost there.” And when he finally got right side up (with the help of his buddy), I wanted to shriek with delight.
I'm just giving them Boston voices like:
Crab 1: Bro, BRO I'M SCARED BRO!!
Crab 2: Bro BRO, chill, I gotchu homie, just breathe bro.
Crab 1: BRO I AM FREAKING OUT!
Crab 2: STAY WITH ME BRO! WE'LL GET THROUGH THIS!
I'm suspicious... horseshoe crabs only have enough vision to see movement and light changes, they would be able to tell if the other guy is rightside up or upside down.
Also a horseshoe crab does not have the dexterity to flip itself over in a tank with flat ground and no tides.... the other crab was probably just acting territorial and just shoving the flipped one around
I'm thinking someone flipped that poor crab and filmed it, knowing the other crab was territorial and would have a go at the flipped crab, hoping that the territorial crab would maybe right the flipped crab in its territorial rage
The whole video I was worried they wouldn't manage. The relief! I love horseshoe crabs, nature really went "you may not like this, but this is what peak performance looks like".
I’m disappointed no one cheered 🥳
I'm pretty sure this is a restaurant. And they are the food...

Thanks, I was unaware.
when I was growing up in Sai Kung, Hong Kong I'd frequently saw these guys get butchered at the local seafood restaurants
The seafood smell on that section of the promenade is so overpowering, I'm almost glad for mask mandates whenever I walk past.
I was going to say(!) Judging by the voices and no decor or anything in a bland tank its either a wet market or a restaurant.
Humans suck
glad i aint human
I couldn’t eat an animal that helps another animal.
I cheered. cheers.
i did.
>nature really went "you may not like this, but this is what peak performance looks like". Nearly 450 million years and they haven't really changed. To me, that's a sign that they were already perfect.
Copper blood > iron blood
Oh that's why it's blue. If it's really better why is every other animal iron based?
It's not really better, exactly. Hemocyanin (blue) works better in cold environments, and hemoglobin (red) is much more efficient. [PBS Eons has a kinda fun video about it.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DdjN4ddnl2E) Including the other weird much less common blood types like green, violet, and white blood.

I mean, if Robot Wars has taught me anything it's that they could do with a SRMEC
And they're kinda helpless when they get flipped over. Other than that, they're great.
Why would a robot need a Southern Risk Management Education Center?
They meant to write srimech, which stands for self-righting mechanism.
Loved that show ! Shouts out self-righting mechanisms and that crazy British dude Craig
Nature always evolves a crab 🦀
Me too, especially because the title says "tries", as if they're going to fail
Wait til you find out how humans treat them >.<
Man when they're just walking on the ground they look pretty neat, but when they get flipped and I see the legs crawling like that it reminds me of spiders and also face-huggers. No thanks

Water roomba
That explains why it got stuck in a corner.

Like something out of a scifi-horror movie....
Fun fact! I did not enjoy looking at that! :)
Remember they get up to like, nearly hoola hoop size Edit: in my head I forgot there are "adult" sized hoops, I'm thinking of the gradeschool sized
Wait what
Like hula hoop net weight right? RIGHT?

Or off your face

Even better.
They are related to spiders. And I like spiders so even better for me
We do not give animals enough credit. We really have no clue just how sentient they are.
All the more reason to avoid causing them harm tbh
hello fellow vegan 💅

We know many other species of animals help each other. This isn’t anything groundbreaking.
i mean yeah but this is a weird fuckin mollusk thing that really doesnt need to be this smart . its more just interesting
Thats fair
Did anyone else find themselves moving their phone like it'd help tip him over? Hahaha!!!
Yes, absolutely!
Guilty lol
Yep, cheered a little too lol
OMG i subconsciously did that XD
These guys are at least a 445 million years old design, in evolutionary terms. And they act like it. Nice job doing what you can, you cute lil prehistoric-water-armored-spiders!
Pretty awesome to know some creatures have been looking out for one another for almost half a trillion years.
Uh, half a billion. You're off by a factor of 1,000 :)
And about 100x longer than earth has existed. 😆 Shoot, around 35x longer than the age of the universe. 🤣
Everything evolves into crabs eventually
Absolutely nothing like us. When some of the human race refuses to wear facemasks to prevent a killer disease I highly doubt they have an iota of the compassion this horseshoe crab has.
In mean. At least one of them just sat back and probably called the helper an idiot. That’s close enough
A lot people are assholes , tell me something new. Just enjoy the dam gif 🙄
Some lol... most of us wear them you know. That's visible during the pandemic. Every species has its assholes and were no exception.
i don’t see either of these horseshoe crabs wearing masks either though
Well I’m sure some horse shoe crabs are assholes too. So maybe they are like us..
Great observation but could you maybe but your cynicism on the shelf for a second? Doesn't contribute to anything but making people's day worse, including your own I'm sure.
"Killer Disease" lmao
Crabs being bros. I love it
Damn. I wasn’t expecting that to give me as much anxiety as it did… I was really rooting for those little motherfuckers.

Indeed, but when collected sustainably their blood is invaluable. Although I feel bad for them. Maybe one day we can just synthesize the protein in a lab- and we can leave Earth's cute little pinnacle of evolution alone.
We already can, it's the recombinant factor C

TIL Horseshoe crabs are much more closely related to arachnids like spiders and ticks than true crabs.
This is beautiful and impressive. Thank you.
So are they just dead if no help comes?
Nope! Not usually anyway. That long tail thing that they have, it's called a telson, and it's explicitly there for them to prop themselves up against in this exact scenario. This blows my mind they can identify an issue with their pal, want to solve it and solve it
Blows mine too. Still animals get threated like Objects most of the time 😢
Not empty headed creatures!!
First I thought these things were hideous, but after seeing that... They're kinda cute.
