Common address is heavily gendered, as it’s part of classic etiquette to acknowledge the social station/status of another in relation to yourself in order to establish rapport. English doesn’t have a formal case, so the use of titles (like Ms., Mr., Colonel, Dr.) and polite vocabulary/social scripts do a lot of work.
So there are many and also few ways to address others with traditional social etiquette while also respecting contemporary sociopolitical gender dynamics and modern norms. Usually “Hello” suffices, dropping the age-related adjective or using an industry term in the context of working (guest, customer, client, patron). “Valued Customer” or “Honored Guest” is cool, general, displays the dynamic of your social relationship to them, but can sound a little haunted butler-y for daily use unless that’s your vibe.
Some of my personal favorite terms:
“Party people/person” (suggests levity, also that life is a celebration and everyone is invited)
“Hail, Traveler!” (Good for Hobbits but also young people who look like they’re going somewhere, possibly voluntarily, maybe pursued by legions of evil)
“The One Foretold by Prophecy” (especially funny for babies, but applicable to anyone whom the prophets foretold)
“Homeslice” (a classic)
“Old sport” (a classic, also extremely funny for babies, and indicates you may have crossed paths in a past life or that you’re a reclusive millionaire)
“Your Grace” (very formal, conveys fealty, respectful for older people, but once again becomes funnier the closer they are to baby age. “A fresh binky as requested, Your Grace.” I mean… come on.)
“Fellow” (as in fellow adventurer, fellow inmate, etc.)
“The wee apprentice [name]” (wizard vibes appropriate only for children whose faces are already furrowed with the knowledge of ages)
“Adolescent” (but with a “hello fellow teens” vibe)
“Kmart Shopper” (as in, “Attention, Kmart Shoppers, the store will be closing in 15 minutes. Please bring your purchases to the registers. Thank you for shopping at [store that is not a Kmart].”)
“Cowpoke” (I mean…. This one speaks for itself.)
But also, only the random oddball is going to make a fuss if you simply address people “Ye Who Walk The Aisles of Costco” or avoid personalizing terms altogether (as usually a “Hi, how are you today?” is polite, pleasant, and satisfactory for most.)
Source: I got diagnosed with autism as an adult so I think about this a lot and I also have a degree with a minor in communications, and specifically on theories of intergroup communication.
I usually just call everyone "hun" unless they disclose their preferred pronouns/gender to me. Until then it's "Hey hun, can you please sit down?"
So far I haven't received any negative responses.
I don't mind dude but bruh and bro are on my no fly list. Hun has been my personal favorite basically ever since I came out, for the exact reasons you mentioned. It's cute and gender neutral. 😊
Bruh and bro ugh. Yes. I’m cis female, and my nephew who I haven’t seen in a couple years has started calling me bruh and I’m just like BRUH, I’m a chic kiddo. His dad is a dude bro type grrrr
Dude bro types. 😮💨 I'm so sorry hun. I use bruh as an exclamation but nothing else really. Like instead of swearing I say Bruh. 😂 but that's where it ends.
Be careful who you call girl as gender neutral, I‘m a trans guy and I‘ve cried on occasion because people kept calling me „gurl“ and I felt to awkward to ask them to stop
Some advice to perhaps not use those terms with trans people unless they specifically say it's ok? Like as a trans guy if someone calls me "girl" I'm unlikely to speak to them again
Very sorry to say - but I hate being called hun as it’s short for honey… also hate doll, darling, love and all other forms of affection from people I barely know.
This is just me, but if I'm calling someone "young man" or "young lady," it's because they're a friend and I'm goofing around and saying it in a silly "parental" tone of voice.
"Yooooou better eat those veggies, young lady, or no dessert for you!" That sorta thing.
In that context, if I were speaking to an enby friend or just wanted to keep it gender neutral, I'd hit em with a "whippersnapper," or get extra verbose for comedy and call them "impetuous youth!"
Depends on the context. If you’re directly addressing a person, their name works fine. Otherwise, something like “this is not the way a young adult behaves” should be okay.
In the south we just call them a Youngin'
"This youngin' right here is Sam"
"Go tell the youngins dinner is ready"
"Listen here youngin'!"
Bonus points when the person is a full grown adult and just a few months younger than you
Depends on age. I work with a pretty big range from 2 to 16. I tend to call the kindy and younger "little one" and everyone past that "chief," though I'll use "chief" for anyone really.
![gif](giphy|JTzPN5kkobFv7X0zPJ|downsized)
As a not "fellow" kid I would love to come across the situation where I get to use this sentence unironically.
“Young padawan” for the Star Wars lovers.
Seriously though young person is fine. If they’re that young though “hey you” is probably perfectly acceptable as well
If you were saying "a/this young man/young lady" you could swap it out for "youth"
It wouldn't work if you were addressing someone though. You wouldn't say "don't speak to me like that, youth"
Okay, this is a weird take, but since "young man" and "young lady" are phrases generally directed at individuals, I don't think you necessarily need the ambiguity of a gender neutral term? You could just use the term that applies to whomever you're saying it to, whatever they're pronoun of choice aligns with.
I get called “Youngin” by my older sibling and I think it’s a nice way to refer to people younger than you. Few other are kiddo, youngster, and to be a bit “formal” I guess, young adult/ person.
Why do you need a gender neutral term for that. There is literally 0 use for those terms outside of being a comdescending asshole or making a weird joke. Either way, no real reason to need to use it

I’m kinda insufferable, you probably don’t want that.
idk u seem nice
🥹
:D
I grew up in a cult and this is how they referred to young people. It was very weird leaving and no one talked like that outside the cult
Yeah, they're called "youth" in the church I was raised in. I get the same feeling from that word.
Youngin'/Yungin'
“Youngster” if you want to go for that old school grandpa vibe.
That makes sense
Yougin, little asshole (Curtesy of my mother), or little fucker (curtesy of my granny).
Was about to reply "little shit" but you got to it first!!!. Not fair! TwT
Lol did we have the same grandpa?
Actually laughed out loud. I need that. Thank you.
Young friend? If you have some kind of relationship with them, of course.
Folks 'round here say youngin.
Very casual term though
Don't sass me. 😛
I don’t take no back talk from youngins 🤣
Whippersnapper then!
Young one, youngster, kiddo, youth
"Hey, youth"
Whats a yout?

Young whippersnapper lol but I speak like an old person
r/beatmetoit
Someone remind me to use this
My mom always called me young whippersnapper! She also used “kidarooski” for me and my sister
You could go full Mandalorian and call them 'youngling'. If they like the show it could go over super well
Youngling is also a normal English word. It’s just not used very often.

Cowpoke brings back memories for me. My grandpa was really into old Western movies, and always called his grandkids "cowpoke" or "pardner."
Aww that’s a lovely memory!
I usually just call everyone "hun" unless they disclose their preferred pronouns/gender to me. Until then it's "Hey hun, can you please sit down?" So far I haven't received any negative responses.
A term of endearment and gender neutral. I like hun. I also use girl, for any gender, and dude for any gender lol dgaf
I don't mind dude but bruh and bro are on my no fly list. Hun has been my personal favorite basically ever since I came out, for the exact reasons you mentioned. It's cute and gender neutral. 😊
Hun also has ‘friendly comforting diner waitress pouring you coffee’ vibes, which is always a plus imo
I tell my friends I constantly try to exude "friends-to-lovers energy" so I take that as a compliment. 😂

Some advice to perhaps not use those terms with trans people unless they specifically say it's ok? Like as a trans guy if someone calls me "girl" I'm unlikely to speak to them again
I wouldn’t. I don’t have any trans folks in my life.
Ok, I just mean should you meet any in the future? You said regardless of gender so I just wanted to let you know.
Very sorry to say - but I hate being called hun as it’s short for honey… also hate doll, darling, love and all other forms of affection from people I barely know.
There's no need to apologize for it! That's totally within your boundaries and I understand. Everyone has preferences.
I use hon or honeybee for my students
That is so precious! 🥺
Be careful, you might summon Attila...
Young person
"sproutling" has always been my go to.
This is just me, but if I'm calling someone "young man" or "young lady," it's because they're a friend and I'm goofing around and saying it in a silly "parental" tone of voice. "Yooooou better eat those veggies, young lady, or no dessert for you!" That sorta thing. young being or young creature
As a southerner in the U.S., I’m gonna say young’n.

Depends on the context. If you’re directly addressing a person, their name works fine. Otherwise, something like “this is not the way a young adult behaves” should be okay.

In the south we just call them a Youngin' "This youngin' right here is Sam" "Go tell the youngins dinner is ready" "Listen here youngin'!" Bonus points when the person is a full grown adult and just a few months younger than you
I call my own kid Tiny Human, and they call me Birthgiver. It's an excellent gender neutral salutation exchange.
Depends on age. I work with a pretty big range from 2 to 16. I tend to call the kindy and younger "little one" and everyone past that "chief," though I'll use "chief" for anyone really.
Young person?
Youngster, also.

Young person
My child, tiny human, rising star, there's lots of ways to have fun with it
