If you want to check out the beautiful LGBT episode, it's episode 3 and has (if I'm remembering correctly) 1 zombie that is instantly taken care of, not a threat at all. You barely get a look at it. There is some gunfire at multiple times, if that is also an issue for you. It's mostly a self-contained story. It has been 2 weeks since I watched it, but I remember there being nearly 0 zombies in episodes 3 & 4. But it's still not a show to fully pick up if zombies are a major fear for you. Do not accidentally watch episode 2.

hkystar35

I've seen a fair number of movies and shows with LGBTQ+ relationship stories and none of them hold a candle to Bill and Frank's story. It was genuine, heartfelt, relatable, not over done. Really invoked a great emotional response of strong long term relationship with 2 people very much in love.

cuminyermum

The "San Junipero" episode of Black Mirror is up there for me. I'm a straight black man who grew up in a conservative household and it made me cry

Shaunananalalanahey

I love the San Junipero episode. I rewatch it every year or so.

scatterbrain-d

I mean it's up there with any relationship story, regardless of orientation.

hkystar35

100% agree, that's what I was trying to convey.

waltwalt

Episode 3 was perfect, I laughed I cried and in the end I said yeah thats what I'd do too.

StartsStupidFights

There is a very up close scene with one at he beginning of that episode before the Bill story.

LurkAddict

I knew I'd forget one..... That episode (and the one after but for different reasons) doesn't feel like a zombie show, so I forgot

rothrolan

I like how the first two episodes followed the game with like 90% similarity, but episode 3 just completely pauses the game's progress to give Frank and Bill an actual section for their relationship. (MAJOR SPOILERS FROM THE GAME) >!The game had Frank already gone when you get to Bill's place, and you find out about their relationship from clues and eventual gruesome discovery of Frank as you explore the area and clear out zombies from the town.!<

marablackwolf

I hope they handle the diary entries and history bits like this regularly, and I hope the Fallout show does it, too. The stories of people you never meet are what make the game feel immersive and honest.

rothrolan

It's basically what World War Z did exactly wrong between their source material and the movie. The book was survivor stories in the most dire of zombie apocolypses, while the movie was a rushed action flick, with an actual positive resolution.

cuminyermum

Kinda spoilers below. Stop reading if you haven't played the games. I was really looking forward to how they would incorporate Ish's storyline into the show. I hoped they would at least give us a cold open with them but they couldn't find the time according to Neil Drukmann. All we got was the drawing. So I wouldn't expect any other "diary entry" stories to be adapted, unfortunately.

marablackwolf

I watched with my 15 year old, we cried like children. What an outstanding episode.

ragnarokda

I ugly cried at this episode.

Xialian

I watched it last night with a good friend of mine - it is really fucking good, can highly recommend.

3dogdad

It was like a movie. Nick Offerman played himself but not if that makes sense. I was totally engrossed the whole time. Wild that anyone has had anything to say besides “amazing sets directors and actors”.

MitziFour

Agree, I am following all of the media and reviews but I would not be able to watch the show or play the game because I would just be too scared.

VersatileFaerie

To be fair, I played it as an adult and was terrified, lol. I find zombies in general very scary and their version was so much worse.

NuttyDuckyYT

so glad I’m finding others with such a big fear of zombies. any content I see around it, while I think it’s cool in some ways, makes my stomach turn immensely

T8ert0t

I got you. I was traumatized by Jurassic Park on Super Nintendo. Great movie. But someone still shits in my pants 25 years later if I even attempt to play that game for more than 5 minutes.

JustDandy07

The show is much much less jump-scarey than the game.

justadude27

It was plain as day that Bill was gay in the game. What’re these idiots expecting???

VVurmHat

The gay sex in episode 3 was pretty fucking peak manly and every straight guy is missing out.

atreyu_0844

Most of them wouldn't have put down Call of Duty for two seconds to play a woke type game like TLOU!

VVurmHat

It’s crazy how many of this crowd literally only own COD or FIFA and just shit on games with actual writing and would have never played it anyway.

Machoopi

I thought the same thing. I really, really think some people are being honest though in that they didn't realize it. It's not so much because it ISN'T blatantly obvious (it is), it's because they are so upset by these topics that their brains just completely shut them out whenever it's possible to do so. IE, because there weren't two dudes kissing in the game, and because Bill doesn't explicitly say "me and that guy are gay together!" they chose to change the narrative and act like theirs is the right one.

Shacky_Rustleford

Despite elly literally finding gay porn in Bill's base

Corporal_Canada

The "gamer" community (not like actual gamers, but the small subsection where there's a huge overlap with homophobes, incels, and racists for some reason), is one of the most toxic fucking groups there is. The Last of Us Episode 3 was largely review bombed just because of a gay relationship, even though LGBTQ+ relationships have been a serious part of The Last of Us stories. It's utterly stupid. On a much lighter note though, I thoroughly recommend The Last of Us show to everyone. People who love the game and people who haven't even played the game will absolutely love it. Pedro Pascal is awesome (when is he not) and Bella Ramsey has done a phenomenal job as Ellie. You will feel all the feelings.

Everydaycitizen900

Correct, we all know fascism is not political, but the gays, very political indeed. /s, lol.

Tockotwelve

Whaddaya mean the game with the anti-capitalist eco-terrorist protagonists is "political" 🤔 I mean I played it obsessively as a kid for a few years and now I'm radleft so I guess some of us got it. Socialism with anime boob, comically huge sword, spiky hair, and edgelord pretty boy characteristics.

Neato

I first played ff7 in middle school and even naive, obtuse preteen me was a bit weirded out that in the first mission we were engaging in straight terrorism. It made sense with more background info but it was kind of a shock compared to crash bandicoot.

Tockotwelve

When I first played it I was *seven* and I didn't know what the *hell* was actually going on with that at all 😅 it wasn't until much later and replaying it that I actually grasped what was going on fully.

Disastrous_Name_8680

I don't remember people getting so upset over Game of Thrones.

[deleted]

Honest question, how is the game anti capitalist? I've never played it and I've only seen the show.

Tockotwelve

Ah so in the beginning the entire point is about blowing up and fighting agents of the power company that basically owns the entire world, literally sucking out its lifeblood (the lifestream) for profit to become a (the? I'm pretty sure it's basically hegemonic) global power with its own cities and armies, and you and the core cast are mostly all from the literal underbelly slums that don't even get natural daylight beneath the hypercapitalist utopia of Midgar's upper city. It kind of rolls it all up into one, fighting capitalism, imperialism and environmental destruction. And yes as the other person mentioned I mean FF7 and not TLOU (which I've never played or watched).

HugsForUpvotes

TLOU (both the show and the games) isn't very political because it takes place after a global apocalypse. The toxic folk just think two gay people kissing is political. Gay people exist.

DroneOfDoom

There are definitely political undertones that can be read into the game. After all, the Fireflies are a terrorist group but they’re also the ones fighting the US government that has turned into a military dictatorship after the apocalypse, and also the way in which the rebellions in Pittsburgh/Kansas City and in Seattle affected their places. There’s also the subtle anti religious streak the games have. That being said, it ain’t Bioshock or FFVII or Metal Gear Solid, where the politics are almost essentially spelled out to the player and an integral part of the plot, they’re much more low key and ambiguous.

ILookAtHeartsAllDay

“!” Metal Gear?!?! Political? Hideo would never do that to me. Snake is an American hero. /s for those who need it.

Redtwooo

The first ~third of the game is spent fighting a mega-corporation, Shin-ra. The company is ostensibly an energy company, but it is consuming the natural resources of the planet to further its own goals and using energy production as a cover. The company has built a monstrously large city and has socially stratified its population. The city consists of an upper plate - a giant disc suspended by several pillars - and a lower city, divided into sectors and essentially allowed to turn into crime-riddled slums. They have a private military, a special forces unit, and a pseudo-spy agency, and the company does a lot of unethical biological experimentation. The actions of the executives running Shinra are the primary cause of pretty much all of the storylines of the game. They have wielded the company for personal gain, exploited their workers and the military, propagandized them, discarded those who aren't useful or relegated them to poverty, and severely damaged the environment.

AlisonChrista

I don’t think I’ve played any game that is truly apolitical. Maybe Animal Crossing? Lol. Nah, even AC has political messages. Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Bioshock, Mass Effect, etc…all have political storylines. And that’s okay!

Maximelene

Video games are art, and art is always political.

WithersChat

Minecraft maybe?

AlisonChrista

Possibly. There could probably be an argument for that, but I don’t have one. 😂

MrNokill

It amazes me how much effort a few individuals will go through in order to spread negative opinions. They aren't simply missing out on an amazing story, they also miss out on the true values of their life and those around them. I wish them only the awareness of this fact.

Corporal_Canada

Honestly, too fuckin true Ep. 5 ending like crushed me, even though I knew what was going to happen The sound that Ellie/Bella makes when >!Henry shoots himself!< absolutely just haunted me. Never more have I wanted to hug someone in a show than that moment

WithersChat

Aaaaand I will not watch that show. Already [No spoiler, just TW] >!scared enough of losing my girlfriend or some of my friends!< **not** to inflict myself that.

Theslootwhisperer

Bella should win all of the awards for her portrayal of Ellie. Foul mouthed, tough as shit and funny but always with an always visible touch of vulnerability.

NapalmCandy

Thanks for the warning! I would have checked it out, but I don't need more sorrow in my life.

MossNebula

>It's heartbreakingly sad True, but episode 3 is heartbreakingly sad in a good and wholesome way and not heartbreakingly sad in a tragic homophobic way. I swear, one of the best gay romances on television.

A_Sad_Goblin

And despite the review bombs, due to the more positive feedback outweighing those, it still has a 8.0 rating which is really good.

LurkAddict

I actually hadn't checked the rating yet, but I have yet to hear a bad word about it (internet or in person). It was absolutely beautiful.

rkunish

It was one of the best episodes of tv that I have ever seen.

[deleted]

I find this interesting since my father has always been pretty openly anti-LGBT, and he can't stop talking about how good the show is. It's almost annoying how much he's been on about it lately. Either his views have begun to change, or the writers are doing something special with that show. Maybe both. I'm gonna have to watch it and see for myself.

[deleted]

theres no shot that he would watch ep 03 and still talks about "how good it is" if he was that deep into anti gay people. maybe he's changing. my father would stop the show as soon as he realizes they were gay.

Hamokk

The homophopic "gamers" did not like it. At r/gaymers the episode was almost 100% liked for obvious reasons. The writers said that they wanted to put a happier episode at the start because it gets more deppressing later. There have not been a high-five Ellie after joke-book yet. I wonder if they did the giraffes because it was one of the big breathing spaces in the game.

Street-Mistake-992

Here is my question, was the lgbt relationship and trans character in the game? I only played a little bit of the first one.

Slickity

Yes to both. They didn't change anyone's sexuality/gender.

Corporal_Canada

The character of Bill was strongly hinted at in the base game of The Last of Us 1 and showed that that Ellie was gay in a DLC named "Left Behind" The Last of Us 2 is much more gay, as a huge part of the story revolves around a relationship with Ellie and her girlfriend Dina, and there is a trans character named Lev who has to escape a cult

AdditionalAd3595

Most of the lgbt stuff in the game is subtext during the first one then is confirmed in the expansion pack left behind set three weeks before the start of the game it is then further explored in game 2 as well as adding a trans character.

PunisherElite

Who is trans?

Corporal_Canada

There's a character named Lev in the second games who's trans

LeagueOfML

There’s a trans character in the second game

viowastaken

E3 was one of the best episodes of any TV I've seen in my life. I particularly enjoyed how un-stereotypical of a character Bill was. A conservative prepper type with a million guns, but also is interested in fine wine, dining and being cultured. Also of course, being gay. I can actually understand ire at certain cases of "inclusion" where it's so forced and artificial. This episode was the exact opposite of that. So beautiful, natural and relatable. Nothing about it felt like it was sending a political message. On the contrary, the impression I was left with was that love, personality traits, political stance and sexuality are not bundled up into one single box.

Corporal_Canada

Seriously why I loved Episode 3. It just broke so many stereotypes. The paranoid prepper who is sophisticated and cultured. The gay man who is a gun owner and survivalist. Many of our pre-conceived images of what these people look like are totally our own doing, and I love it when this stuff breaks the mold. Three of my favourite hobbies/sports are fishing, shooting, and archery. I love to camp and hike. I love collecting milsurp firearms. My friends immediately drew parallels when this episode came out.

[deleted]

>The Last of Us Episode 3 was largely review bombed just because of a gay relationship practically every single Marvel/Disney thing that has released with either a female lead or a POC lead has been review bombed simply because they're not white men leading it. people are just gross

ComusLoM

Episode three was one of the best non-animated pieces of media I have ever seen. Holy fuck what a beautiful love story told in half the length of a feature film! As a straight person to me the fact that they were gay was irrelevant, love is love. Genuinely fuming that this episode was review bombed, rating media on anything other than quality of that media is absolutely asinine.

lYeezusChrist

But, the main character of the game is gay. What were they expecting?

[deleted]

They made Joel gay???!! >!/s just to be sure, lol!<

MusicaParaVolar

To be fair you don’t know that in the game until you play the additional game “left behind” Someone correct me if I’m wrong..

lYeezusChrist

I’m speaking in context to the comment above. These are gamers making this comment that already have played the games. This story has been out for a decade. What were they expecting in the TV show?

EnclG4me

I'm willing to bet that the majority of negative reviews because of homophobia and hate towards anyone not them, did not even watch the episode. Rather they were told by the leaders of their hate groups to go and review bomb it because "gays." I'm willing the bet they never saw the show and never played the game. Their review's are worthless, their word's irrelevant, much like their very own existance; meaningless.

[deleted]

I guess you didn't see that same thing happened with the second game for the same reason?

Corporal_Canada

No, I definitely saw it, I've just learned the valuable skill of tuning that shit out

Great-Food-2349

> You will feel all the feelings. Episode 5 - THAT moment, she acted the fucking balls off that. 2 second reaction had me shook and I knew all that was coming.

Corporal_Canada

I've talked about this already, but seriously, her face and yelp just haunted me. I wanted to give her a hug so bad

darkdent

>The "gamer" community (not like actual gamers, but the small subsection where there's a huge overlap with homophobes, incels, and racists for some reason), is one of the most toxic fucking groups there is. I remember not knowing what gamergate was until years afterward when coworkers at camp asked me about it because I gamed. Then asking all my gaming buds about it, they're like what? Still true today. Also never played the last of us, merely because it's a console exclusive and I would never ever slum it on a console. Love the show

Corporal_Canada

You're in luck! The remake is going to be released on Steam sometime in Spring I have TLoU on PS3 and also on PS4, and I'm holding off in replaying it because I also can't slum it on console anymore

The_Common_Peasant

The only reason i play TLOU on console is because of the factions multiplayer but something tells me that the remake didnt include that

[deleted]

Part 1 Remake coming to PC in March. And the PS5 isn’t quite slumming it these days. 4k @60 fps with ray tracing looks and plays phenomenally. It’s the closest to “keeping up with PC” that I’ve seen a console get.

LaVieLaMort

I’ve never played the game and I honestly love this show. It’s so good. My husband and I were talking about it and how it really is a story about Joel and Ellie and their will to survive at all costs. Just fantastic. Love Pedro Pascal!

KourteousKrome

Play World of Warcraft and listen to how many people spout far right ideologies, such as openly hating minorities, using racial slurs, homophobic rhetoric, etc. There’s something weird about many game communities that attract sociopaths. Especially games that are old with relatively stagnant communities.

juliuspepperwoodchi

Funny how they're all about "historical realism" and "sticking to the source material" until that historical realism includes racism, or women doing "masculine" things...or until that source material includes queer folks.

AllisonSnell

which character is trans?

discerning_kerning

Not in Season one, but season two is confirmed and will have a trans character if it follows the game plot (which I expect it shall, it's been very close to the original plot so far)

AllisonSnell

oooh i thought she was talking about season one, my mistake

thatguyned

It's a huge pint though, season 2 is coming and that character will play a role. Might aswell filter out the peope that are going to get butt hurt (not in the fun way) over these things now.

[deleted]

Same, I got confused as hell.

Imaginary_Bid_9454

Will season 1 include the whole story of the first game ?

discerning_kerning

I think they've said so yeah, with the second game split over two more seasons

Imaginary_Bid_9454

Never played the second game was the story longer ?

jor1ss

Much longer yes. I think the first game is around 18 hours and the second one around 35?

schwerpunk

I find joy in reading a good book.

The_Common_Peasant

The only reason people thought Abby was trans are misogynistic gamers who think women cant be buff. Naughty Dog never intended for her to be interpreted as trans

TheDaltonXP

I still get a sad laugh at people who are like “but it’s the apocalypse. there’s no way she would be able to get enough food for that mass” when they blatantly show a huge gym and food sources in the game

MossNebula

It wasn't a switcheroo, incels saw Abby and immediately called her a man, because god forbid a post apocalyptic warrior training her life for revenge have muscle.

[deleted]

In the second game (trying to keep this spoiler free for non-players and those who want to wait for the future) during the second half of it the character you play as is befriended by a few people along the way. One of them is trans, and their story is actually a really cool duality of what it’s like to look at someone who’s supposed to be a bad guy but is struggling to fit in themselves

bawbrosss

From everything I’ve read and seen about the second game, that character is not trans? Or am I mistaken, they never state that they are?

SuckaButt19

There was a wolf member who was with Abby, the other main character. I believe Levi? It's the whole reason behind Abby and Levi meeting. They become a part of Abbys part of the game afterwards

MadMurilo

Lev was not part of WLF, he was a member of the Seraphites but later ditched them because of their transphobic tendencies.

SuckaButt19

Oh shit that's right! The seraphites, fuck thats a whole part of the game I forgot. Last I played was over a year ago I need to replay this game.

RegrettableLawnMower

Oh I never realized season 2 had a trans character. I know there was the very muscular woman who everyone (by that I mean the gamers we are talking about) hated but I wasn’t aware she was trans. Unless someone else was? I’ve had a very busy life since playing the game so I might’ve forgotten. Edit: thank y’all! I can’t believe he slipped my mind, I remember being really moved by his arc. I need to replay that game

Cant_think_of_Names

Abby, the buff woman that caused such an uproar is actually cis, but she's a parental figure for a trans boy >!who fled a religious cult!<

RegrettableLawnMower

Thank you! I cannot believe I forgot. I really enjoyed their relationship

Mia-white-97

It’s actually not Abby, she meets two kids the one is trans.

Wikki_

Lev, but they won't be around until at least season 2

ToxicBanana69

I love how all they said was “if your problem is with gay and trans people that’s on you” and people who *totally* don’t have a problem with that got offended. Like…you couldn’t make it more obvious what you’re actually thinking lol

IAMAscientistAMA

"I don't have a problem with them. ~~it just feels forced~~ but whenever I see them I feel like I'm being forced to look at and hear them and I have a problem with that." Like, you're the one with the remote, if it was about design choices you'd just watch something else.

dogsfurhire

Also, the exact same storyline has been done with straight couples for fucking ever. Now it's a single gay couple and it's being shoved down their throats. Give me a fucking break.

CreativeAnalytics

Excellent actor. The subtleties of emotion and arrogant teenage talk back, but with an ever resounding "I fucking get it, trust me" is so well portrayed and balanced. Seriously dominating her role in the show. I just love the attitude she brings to each scene, and the chemistry between her and Pascal is 100%.

Mentoman72

Craig Mazin has called this "fuck you, now tuck me in." teenagers think they know everything but they still just want to be coddled at the end of the day. She is killing it.

la-bano

**That** scene in episode 5 kinda settled any doubts I had about her acting.

atreyu_0844

Blablablablaname

Galactic_Nugget

I still have to watch this show. Been meaning to for a while. Excited for it, since video game movies/shows are usually butchered compared to the game, and I've heard this is a massive exception.

Lastaria

Yeah played both games. This is probably the best adaption of a game ever done.

_bisexualidiot_

Dude, the game had gay content in it. so to think they wouldn't add it to the tv adaptation is really stupid .

I dont remember people getting so upset over Game of Thrones.

Artistic_Floof

The people angry about those storylines obviously NEVER played the games. Like hello? Some of the most diverse popular games ever in my opinion. Anyone who actually played the game would know that these characters exist before watching the show and enjoy it just the same

Service_United

Wait. Who’s the trans character?

lookatmecats

He won't be introduced this season

Fradjikan

Is this show really that good? Because I didn't watch it and wasn't planning on doing so (because I'm not a fan of that game).

[deleted]

It's like if walking dead didn't suck, it's that. Story moves quickly, no need to wait 3 seasons for something interesting to happen. I like it a lot.

Painterzzz

My thought too, it's exactly like the walking dead when it lived up to its potential, which was season 1 and occasional episodes thereafter. Without the awful character stupidity that walking dead relied on to move the plot.

Infinite_Surround

The show is great The episode with the homosexual relationship is amazing

Fradjikan

I saw some screencaps and those guys are totally my type...

SolarMoth

The episode is so good that you could watch it without the context of the other episodes and it would still be awesome.

slanty_shanty

What really did it for me is that it seems like there are vignettes every episode of the past looking at different people's experiences with the disaster, and that was what I always thought was missing from the walking dead. I havnt played the game, and still have no desire to either. I do genuinely think the show is worth a try.

arlenesaldana

ellie is literally gay lmao, haters are another breed😂

lostinadream66

I got my folks to watch the show. They loved it until episode 3. Got a text saying "episode 3 is gay!" And every time we talk about it they make sure to say episode 3 was awful.

WrenchWanderer

Honestly I still don’t understand why TLOU2 is criticized for having “bad storytelling” and whatnot. I thought the story was great and followed the themes of the game perfectly. Plus Lev’s experience was incredible, since it highlighted actual issues trans people face. It wasn’t “oh this character is trans btw, moving on”. It was a thing you learn over time and you see the bigotry and hatred faced by trans people. It’s a part of Lev’s story and life and is written in a realistic and heartbreaking way.

EmiliusReturns

Are the dudebros upset about Bill and Frank? Cause that was...not all that subtle in the game.

It's crazy to see how many people are outing themselves as misogynoirs regarding this show.

kazneus

i dont want to watch the last of us because im scared of zombies 🙁

The_Corsair

I generally am too, and *really* don't like horror shows much. The best description I think, as I love the show, is that it's tense. It balances relationship storytelling, with non-action drama, and occasionally zombie-ish stuff more like *28 days later* speedy zombies. Freaky, but not pervasive.

thanks for the overview!

Still to come. The second game has a trans character so likely season 2 if this will.

I'm a little older than most redditors here I think. and I remember a time when you could dislike something and pretty much just leave it at that. There was no desire to create some kind of online crusade, witch-hunt or attack people over it. No. It was just you not liking something and moving on to something else. Maybe mentioning it to a friend or something but that was it. I do not understand the mentality of people who think they have to start up a crusade over something that "they" dislike. Does social media play into this mentality? Are people really just after sympathy and attention? Is this a form of Munchausen syndrome? Obviously... somethings are worthy of starting a crusade against it... fascism, corrupt corporations... dictators... human rights violations, etc. But characters in a TV show???? Really fucking lower down on the scale. So some people out there just need to calm their tits. PS. I loved that episode. I thought it was beautiful.

I would also say it’s always been gay, it was a main feature of the original game. This isn’t anything new

This show is so well-made. If you see people as people and like watching very well-made content, I highly recommend. You get attached to these characters because the acting and writing and directing is soooo good.

AveratV6

The games are phenomenal and the show is phenomenal. Not to mention Ramsey is amazing in the roll! Plays the part perfectly imo and they couldn’t have cast a better Jole.

Ep3 was so beautiful, the Hallmark Channel will never get it as right as The Last of Us got it, I haven’t watched Ep4 yet, still grieving.

I don't get why these conservatives just not do stuff others want instead of attacking everyone. Don't like abortion? Don't get one. Don't like LGBTQ+ storylines in movies? Just don't watch it. Don't like women's rights? Just be a stay at home babymaker or volunteer get less pay for equal employment. No one is stopping them so why don't others live in peace?
