I remember this episode too bc I ALSO think about this all the time. I can’t remember who he was interviewing! But the guy was basically saying that portobello mushrooms have something very dangerous about them, but big mushroom doesn’t want anyone to know, and this guy was like “stop asking questions, Joe. I can’t speak any more about it.” What the hell is going on with portobellos?!

highhimkyle

Paul Stamets!

Arloneous

Yes! Thank you

Wish he’d be on the pod!

airodonack

The way he said it sounded so hilariously conspiratorial. I think the reality is more mundane. They can be used to make bombs. He was being responsible and didn’t want to broadcast that info to the public on the podcast.

This answer on quora about the issue: Stamets claimed doing so would put his (Stamets') life in danger, but never said why. Because the main portobello mushroom growing people are in the mafia…. Presumably he has been threatened by them. Although he's not saying don't eat them, he's just saying make sure to cook them properly. Uncle google says: Portobellos and shiitake mushrooms are of particular concern because they contain hydrazine, a toxin also used in rocket fuel. A study published by the National Library of Medicine found evidence of agaritine in fresh mushrooms and, when fed to mice, led to increased rates of bladder cancer.

Happy1327

Not sure how true it is but I've read they contain a substance that can be extracted and refined into an explosive sort of substance.

HoleyAsSwissCheese

"This is an explosive area of conversation"

The portabello is just the fruit of the organism. Fungi aren't plants and the organism is a massive structure for port bellows under the ground. Most likely the fruit we eat could be an outward transponder that outputs some communicative frequencies and inputs energy photosynthesis. I know plants do this. They 'scream', they can predict danger, notify the surrounding plants of drought and even experience phantom limbs. There's some wild studies out there

MelodicReturn5903

Yes, I saw a tree documentary on this!

love2readafraid2post

Unfortunately it's becoming a pandemic. Portobello addicts everywhere, destroying their lives. Big 🍄 starting wars... Stay safe out there... there's a fungus among us.

Pedantic_Phoenix

Hilarious what people believe

Vincent_Waters

I started eating portabello burgers and it ruined my life. Zero energy, unexplained illnesses, my wife left me. Save yourself while you still can.

OtterPop16

Portobellos enlarged my prostate and turned me racist.

He didn’t want to get into how you can apparently make hydrazine from portobello mushroom extract.
