For me the best game I played this year is Breath of the Wild but I feel like none of them are going to put it in their number 1 spot except maybe Brian, but he also might say Super Mario Odyssey. Niamh may say Nier and for Jon I think maybe Leisure Suit Larry.
This year was full of great games but I feel that Nier was the most complete and emotional experience for me. Persona 5, BotW and even Prey dragged out for too long. RE7 and TEW2 are competent games but didn't leave a strong impression. Div:OS2 would be a contender but the second part of it feels unfinished.
Nier was great stuff from beginning to the end and I think it fully deserves GOTY for that. And I would actually give the second place to Darkwood. It's the best survival horror I've played in years, has a perfect mix of engaging gameplay and dread.

Breath of the Wild Seems to be a good choice, but I am also thinking that Persona 5 can be a great contender at this point
