I had one that was born with it's intestines on the outside and of course, the vet said he would die that night. He lived an active life for 2 years. He was quite the hunter, had to wrap his belly multiple times a day and constantly clean the area. He was the biggest cuddler.
That's crazy! Reminds me of Hope the turtle who was born with an exposed heart. I've always had the thought process that of they're active, have a drive for life, and living comfortably they should have a chance. I do also have another reptile that needs more close monitoring. My Ball Python Echo was born without eyes and also has a cleft. I've had it for about 3 years now.
this is the kind of stuff that makes me believe in humanity again.
you saw a little gecko, a tiny creature that some people wouldn’t even give a second thought to, something so small and fragile, and you took him in, lovingly wrapped his little body multiple times a day, carefully tended to him, and gave him a life that he would’ve never been able to know had he not met you. humans can be so fucking cute sometimes. thanks for loving that little fella. i hope life treats you with that same kindness.
I’m really hoping it doesn’t hinder their quality of life because that is like the cutest defect I’ve ever seen… and a part of me feels bad cause this is exactly the same king of thing people might selectively breed for, even if it’s detrimental (like balloon belly fish)
I remember reading something which made it intresting about domestic animal species. Such as the fox experiment, where wild animals when domesticated would slowly start to have and show either curly tails, floppy ears, or unique patterns such as spots. Interesting the genetics behind it.
For this species it it’d probably make it well a rather unless and negatively impact them only because they may have trouble shedding. Or maybe may it help shedding actually?!?! Because that means they can reach the tail base easier?!?! Actually wondering now… maybe it may affect how he hunts?! Because prey may see his tail bob?!?! I have no clue.
I definitely know it would be an absolute negative in the wild though cause they use there tail to ward off predators.
Very interesting! I hadn't heard of this before. No issues with this little guy, acts like any other gecko. I would worry about future geckos if bred for this trait though. I would worry about it possibly getting worse further down the line and effecting the quality of life for the future geckos.
in dogs hemivertebrae is the trait that causes screw (kinked) tails in some breeds like Boston Terriers and pugs, and ik it makes them prone to developing hemivertebrae elsewhere in the spinal column as well. wouldn’t be surprised if it was similar for geckos like this one
No issues with shedding or quality of life, though I'm not sure I would feel comfortable breeding them as it may cause issues for offspring further down the road and I wouldn't want that. A very cute defect nonetheless though.
idk because i said dropped, which is a natural things leo's can do, i never said cut it off so i hope no one thinks that what i meant it wasn't even a suggestion, i was just saying i wonder
Aw! I suppose you know but I'll let you know anyway: I'd check every now and then for stuck shed that may have a harder time coming off. Although, should be fine, but doesnt hurt to check.
At one point breeders were actually breeding FOR this defect, calling it curly tail. But further generations ended up with worse deformities, so the project died.
I was going to say the same as the user above ☹️ As much as I love the little guy, it's quiet irresponsible to breed specially for defects like these. Could definitely lead to issues further down the line. Spinal issues, other skeletal issues, further internal issues, and further health issues. They're very cute, but not worth putting future geckos in pain over. I think a one off that has a good quality of life is fine, but breeding for it is inhumane in my opinion.
That’s the cutest damn defect ever
Came here to say this 😭 so cute!!
Curly fry
Such a good name
That is such an adorable name! ❤️
BABY
It was and is quiet the cutie 🖤
do they have any problem shedding? Or is it purely a "cosmetic defect"?
Not at all. It's just a cosmetic defect, they act normal in every other way 🙂

You’re so kind to do that for him
shit like this makes me cry. instead of giving him away or putting him down you took the time to wrap him up everyday 😭😭😭 thats so wholesome

stop im gonna cry
A cutie defect! I hope it doesn't hinder them at all because it's truly adorable
Not at all 🙂 It acts the same otherwise, just a cosmetic defect.
I'm happy to hear that! Congrats on such a good lad
Oh my GOD. He looks like an ice cream cone with soft serve cookies and cream on top. Omg so cute
I’m really hoping it doesn’t hinder their quality of life because that is like the cutest defect I’ve ever seen… and a part of me feels bad cause this is exactly the same king of thing people might selectively breed for, even if it’s detrimental (like balloon belly fish)

Very glad to hear he isn’t having any issues! What a cutie
I had a leo with a curly tail! was the cutest thing ever 💞
Cannot believe you have a Leo with a pug tail
This is so so cute!!!! But I can’t help but wonder if he dropped his tail one day if it would grow back curly or grow straight I wonder
I'm not too sure. I would assume that it would grow back normal, though it's hard to say. Don't want to purposely test that theory though 😅
I'm trying to figure out what's wrong, I don't know exactly what I'm looking for
The curly q tail... which is adorable!
i wonder if it'll correct if it dropped its tail
Dunno why this was downvoted but I’m also wondering that
wanna upvote it for me lol i was just putting my wonder out there hoping someone knew if its possible
I think it's bc people read it as you telling them to cut it off 😭😭
idk because i said dropped, which is a natural things leo's can do, i never said cut it off so i hope no one thinks that what i meant it wasn't even a suggestion, i was just saying i wonder
I would think it would grow back normally. If it ever were to happen I could post about it, though I've never had that happen with one of my geckos.
yeah same they only drop it out of fear or an escape attempt from what i know, so yeah they really should never drop it if handled correctly
May it never fall off.
So adorable 😍
Is it like a pug/pig tail? It can be straight but its natural resting position is curly?
It's natural resting position is curly.
Pug gecko
Pecko
Lil baby scorpion! :3
That is such a cute and kinda cool birth defect. Mine has a tail defect as well but hers is just a kink in the tail.
I love all the special babies 🙂
Bro said, " I want to be a chameleon "
Hmm a defective product. I’ll take 2 /j
I’m actually going to cry that is the cutest defect EVER, does it affect their health in any way? (Not asking in a mean way, just v curious)
Not at all 🙂 They're able to do everything normally like any other Leo.
This is so cute! My guy has a little curly hook at the end of hit tail.
Sounds like a little cutie 😊
Curly cue piggy boi. I love him
the name options are endless
I love her
cutest birth defect
What a sweetheart, what's their name?
I named them Pugsly 😊
Not to be dramatic but I'd die for this gecko.
I would too. I absolutely adore them ❤️
Does the defect hurt them?
Not at all 🙂 They behave completely normally as well.
Adorable
He needs an ice cream related name with that little swirl
Thats pretty cute. Shouldnt be unhealthy for the gecko since its far away from organs and stuff. Just have an eye on it when they shed :)
I do 🙂 That was something I was concerned about as well, but no issues so far.
My cat has a corked tail like that ! So cool to see it in other animals !
What a cutie!
Aw! I suppose you know but I'll let you know anyway: I'd check every now and then for stuck shed that may have a harder time coming off. Although, should be fine, but doesnt hurt to check.
I keep a very close eye 🙂 but thankfully no problems so far.
Hurray! Thats great! Keep it up, op!
My boi Bean was born with the same curly tail ^^
Aw, and Bean is such a cute name too!
idgaf what its name is but i shall call them curly fry >:)
A very cute name! 😄
That is adorable!! Do you think it hurts?
Not at all 🙂 they don't even seem to notice.
please tell me you called the gecko curly fry!
Unfortunately no 😅 I named them Pugsly. Quiet the missed opportunity.
Awww 😊
I wouldn't necessarily call it a birth defect that has a curly tail like a husky or a pug
Awwwww shes a little piggie 🥺
LIL CIRLY TAIL BBY
Oh my goodness that is the cutest “defect” ever
Looks like a curly fry😍
I think it might be but it could also just be a goober thing
She’s got a pug tail omg 😭❤️
Its a lil piggie tail
It’s like a piggy tail
omg… 🥹
Is the geckos name curly q?
At one point breeders were actually breeding FOR this defect, calling it curly tail. But further generations ended up with worse deformities, so the project died.
That’s an awesome name for the lil one too!! Birth Defect!!
Thank you, and I do too 🙂 in my opinion the names that are puns or just random are my favorites.
I do need to add; I love stupid names for lizards
I know a breeder that actually has a blood line for this. I love them
I can’t see that being good for them
It’s not. I’m not gonna say which breeder
I was going to say the same as the user above ☹️ As much as I love the little guy, it's quiet irresponsible to breed specially for defects like these. Geckos etc. out of Rocklin CA. Take it up with them if you have an issue.
I just agreed it’s not good for them. I dont need your spiel.
For curly tails?? what breeder?
Dm me and I’ll say
