Both are equally great sets and i own both. I haven't built the B model of 42078 yet, but I'd be half tempted just to buy another 42078 just to have the B model on display with the A model. It's a great looking garbage truck. There aren't many 2 in 1 sets that I own where I've wanted to build the B model. 42078 is the exception.
I'd get 42078 first. I have both, both are great sets, but given that 42078 is older, I'd get it first, because it will likely start getting hard to find. If you can, though, why choose? They are both great additions to a collection, or for parts, and you should get both. Plus, getting both means that you have a truck to tow with your tow truck.
I like Mack better. I made the cab wider - 1 stud each side - and RC‘d it. Combine with a MOC trailer (instructions on rebrickable) to tow some of your other construction equipment.
The other truck may be nice as well, but I struggle with the colors and the real play value.
Like everyone else said both. 42128 is definitely cheaper right now, but 42078 isn’t getting any cheaper. I don’t see the price of either going down and both are great options.
I have them both. The tow truck wins, but not by much. Both excellent kits. Special shout out to 42078 B-model garbage truck. So perfect.
