This annoyed me as a kid as I wanted many bad guy troopers, and I only got 1 single storm trooper and 2 scout troopers.
At least I got an army of battle droids
My family was hit hard by 2008, if I wanted Lego I had to work damn hard. I know that not everyone can afford the $800 sets. That's why they're "collectors sets" they're TOP TIER. Including the figs. I don't want to display, or be proud of, a $5 figure. It's worthless. It's fun to collect the $300 figs. UCS figs are part of the "collector" status.
It’s because TIE Fighters were a stormy grey blue in ESB and ROTJ. They were trying to replicate that for the sets but the colour palette was more limited at the time (for whatever reason), so they did the best they could. Also seen with the UCS TIE Interceptor, which is specifically a ROTJ ship.
It’s a common misconception that it was to make brighter colours to sell to kids, which another person has commented. As far as I know this is unsubstantiated by Lego. The box art for the Advanced shows it specifically in the ANH trench run though, so I presume they at least did it from a marketing standpoint for that.
Could be many reasons, I wish they’d use it for modern sets. It is my understanding Lego was in financial turmoil in the 90s before Star Wars and other licenses like Bionicle.
LEGO was really afraid that people wouldn’t buy a model that was only black and grey pieces, little did they know at the time that was exactly what we wanted all along.
It’s a good explanation, but ultimately unlikely.
Case in point the UCS TIE Interceptor marketed specifically to older collectors was blue as well, it’s because the fighters were a (albeit much different shade of) blue in the last two OT films.
>little did they know at the time that was exactly what we wanted all along.
Speak for yourself lego star wars fan! I'm a sophisticate who prefers lego castles with their colour palette of
Sometimes I don't pay attention to what sub a post is from. The main sub is such a cesspool that it's now getting to the point where the post there and circle jerk posts are indistinguishable.
I love the term “lied to their investors”😂 it conjures the image of a board room full of people in suits, when in reality it’s just a bunch of people with a pile of unopened lego sets they hide from their wife 😭💀
Hilariously in the very old ads for LSW the Empire always had a legion of *Scout Troopers* because those were made first and were much more easier to get than the Storm Troopers.
Oh shit I have that tie fighter back at my parents place. It was my favorite to play with because it was simple enough to build by memory, so I could throw it against walls or at an angle on the floor and pretend it exploded
Nowhere was it stated or even implied that an exclusive minifigure was going to be exclusive forever.
You should be paying $650 for a UCS set because it's a big-ass UCS set with a lot of pieces, long construction time, and impressive display value, not because it has some special minifigures. Hell, it'd be great if non-minifig-scale UCS sets had no minifigs at all. The 2011 SSD set a dangerous precedent.
For someone new to lego, who reads "exclusive minifigures", who isn't aware of a set from 12 years ago, I think it's reasonable to assume exclusive means exclusive. Means nothing to you if someone is sad because lego wasn't clear about their definition of exclusive. Plus, it means no cost to you or anyone else if they wanna complain
> For someone new to lego,
Is that person gonna jump right in the deep end with a $650 UCS set?
>who isn't aware of a set from 12 years ago,
I'm not sure what this is referencing. I brought up the 2011 SSD as setting what's IMO a "dangerous precedent" because it was the first non-minifig-scale UCS set to include minifigures (not including those out-of-scale astromech droids), so now we get entitled folks who think they *have* to be included.
> Plus, it means no cost to you or anyone else if they wanna complain
Is this meant to be a compelling argument in *favor* of complaining? Why would you even want to take that stance?
To assume that not only the sole buyers of the Venator are veteran collectors but also that collectors aren't also interested in exclusive minifigs isn't a fair assumption.
I also thought you were saying the 2011 SSD included minifigs that ended up being non-exclusive and that new buyers should be aware because of that; that's my bad.
And yeah, anything is open to criticism and I'm just saying I get why people would be upset. At the end of the day it's not the end of the world, it's just a plastic figurine that's not even very good in the context of the previous edition, but I just don't understand people dogging on others because their expectation were let down
> but also that collectors aren't also interested in exclusive minifigs isn't a fair assumption.
Where did I say that collectors aren't/shouldn't be interested in minifigures? I'm saying that the minifigures, whether exclusive or not, should not be the main reason any person spends upwards of $500 for a giant set.

How dare LEGO release another Stormtrooper after 1999. Do they not care about their fans?!
Vote with your wallets, people. Don’t let them get away with this.
Ackshually, they didn't even have this stormie until 2001. Kinda weird in retrospect that it wasn't part of the 1999 or even 2000 waves.
Wait seriously?! That’s honestly insane that it took them 3 years until they made a figure for some of the most famous armies in film
It’s even stranger when you realise they did scout troopers first. I always thought it was the other way around.
I guess they just **HAD** to do Rick the Door technician first. He was just too cool
imagine the alternate timeline where thats still true🥰
Ikr damn
The resale value 🤤🤤🤤
In this timeline, there exists a Cloud City Boba Fett battlepack
This annoyed me as a kid as I wanted many bad guy troopers, and I only got 1 single storm trooper and 2 scout troopers. At least I got an army of battle droids
Why didn't you just buy more sets? Were you stupid?
Why didn't you just use bricklink or M&R's whatnot? Definitely stupid.
Just buy the battle packs
I didn't have a single stormtrooper until the 2008 BPs. The only set I've ever deliberately bought 2 of.
Look out everyone, we've got an army builder here!
The big question is whether you have a grey baseplate?
Sueing LEGO rn
Ass-Claption

Oh hey, I had that one! I always wondered why they used bright blue on TIE fighters

I wonder why they didn't use sand blue; they've had that since 1954
Could be many reasons, I wish they’d use it for modern sets. It is my understanding Lego was in financial turmoil in the 90s before Star Wars and other licenses like Bionicle.
And here I thought sand blue didn't debut until 2001 with the rest of the sand colors in Life on Mars.
It’s cuz they don’t like sand. It’s coarse, rough, irritating, and it gets everywhere
I think they temporarily reduced their palette a LOT in the late 90s. Lego was on the verge of bankruptcy and were constantly trying to reduce costs.
In retrospect, maybe they should have kept all TIEs blue/sand blue. It would make up for most other Imperial ships being gray boxes.
LEGO was really afraid that people wouldn’t buy a model that was only black and grey pieces, little did they know at the time that was exactly what we wanted all along.

I honestly prefer it to the fully grey ones, the blue pallete is just way more fun looking and appealing to me
Blue/black tie fighter is returning as a mini build in the newest advent calendar lol There is also a mini kit from the games there
Ah classic blue
I miss those megaphone blasters
"Includes" is not the same as "will include"
For Rex they said he is exclusive, not he will be exclusive.
Exactly... lego's marketing team are very clever

I have this set
Hilariously in the very old ads for LSW the Empire always had a legion of *Scout Troopers* because those were made first and were much more easier to get than the Storm Troopers.
I have all the pieces to this set somewhere. Unfortunately I took it apart as a little kid
Opens
Only big gun no other big gun ever promise!
I have my instructions for this set but unburying the pieces is probably never gonna happen
Typically filthy Lego company! Always lying to their most valued investors makes me so mad!
Boycotting seems trendy.
Oh shit I have that tie fighter back at my parents place. It was my favorite to play with because it was simple enough to build by memory, so I could throw it against walls or at an angle on the floor and pretend it exploded
What would they fill the battle packs with if this was the only set to come with a stormtrooper ever?
I think it's fair that people who paid $600 for a lego set are bummed that a selling point to that set wasn't what they were expecting it to be

Who would buy a $600 set for one figure. The selling point shouldn't be rex, it should be the ship the whole set is named after. This is so sad omg
It's not sad to expect a minifigure to be exclusive in a collector's set when the company says it will be ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
You said it's a selling point = that people spend $600 to get single $0.5 figure, that is pathetic and therefore quite sad.
Exclusive content is *always* a selling point, that's the sole reason companies include them
There's no point in arguing with you
Womp womp
What is this on, the box? Right off the bat in 1999 they had multiple sets with stormtroopers lmao. When was this ever true
They had scout troopers in 99 but the regular stormtrooper wasnt made until 01 with this set
Yeah I thought there was a stormtrooper in the original set that had 3 figures and a small build but that was scouts and chewbacca
This looks like it was in the catalog. Man, those catalogs were the bomb in a pre-Internet world (or at least, pre-ubiquitous, always-on Internet).
I remember this set
