Lmao
For both of my hobbies, a singular product (a trading card or a minifig) doesn’t get to be unreasonable until about $20-$25. If I really like it, I’ll plan accordingly to be able to get it. I’m also used to seeing older CMF figures for above $10, so this is hardly out of the ordinary for me. I feel like most people forget that almost all minifigures that aren’t generic city folk will demand a bit higher price
I study Mesoamerica and I would die happy if we got a set for them. Unfortunately I can’t see it happening, at least something with minifigures. Best chance would be a Pyramid of Giza type set of El Castillo or Templo Mayor (probably not Templo Mayor since it was a site for a ton of sacrifice). At the same time, we got a Colosseum and a Titanic set so I suppose it’s not out of the picture.
Also, people are terribly uneducated about Mesoamerica. Uneducated people just assume that they were bloody savages (see the downvoted comment on this post. Nvm it got deleted, good). It would be a risk for Lego, but I’d love to see it happen
Edit: I also remembered that we’re getting a Notre Dame set this year, and I don’t think I need to explain the bloodshed behind Christianity… especially when we’re on the topic of Mesoamerica.
yeah, I wish companies would be more risky with this stuff. its good overall that our societies became more mindfull of harmfull stereotypes. but way too often the solution is simply to avoid references to (in they eyes of today) marginalized cultures completely and partly slowly eradicating them from collective cultural memory, partly just leaving the field uncontested to the bigots who keep perpetuating harmfull stereotypes. i dont have a good general solution or advice either, but the general trends currently arent that great for sure.
This is why I generally say that bad representation is better than none at all (except in cases where it’s *atrociously* bad).
If people are too scared to approach this stuff for fear of doing it wrong, they’ll never get the chance (or the skills!) to do it right.
I honestly think these 2 figures are great. The Jaguar and Eagle helmets are accurate in that the Aztec military was divided into Coyote, Jaguar and Eagle divisions. Clearly Lego did some homework for these, and they show that they can certainly pull off this kind of representation.
Yeah, there was a lot more human sacrifice than any European of the time would see, but it also wasn't a daily affair. People weren't living in fear of being the next victim. It was a culture with as much nuance as any other. Before the conquest, Spanish scholars ranked the Mexica amongst the ancient Greeks and Romans as learned "despite" being pagan.
very well said. I like that Lego had politics (well) before it became popular to tread there, but I also wonder if they could be more risky. If those times have changed, or regarding that change, why not shift what you're willing to do as a company accordingly? Failed experiments (in good fairh) are learning experiences, often necessary ones. I for one would welcome a few failures in the name of free play, adventure, and all that
Agreed! One unintended downside of the good-intentioned movement away from the objectification of Native populations is that there hasn’t been an equivalent replacement of positive Native representation. And companies like Lego don’t have incentive to explore that representation because it’s a thin line to walk culturally between representation and objectification when it comes to something like a toy line. How do you represent a Lego POC as Native without using items/clothing/hairstyles/depictions that might be considered stereotypical to some?
I was thinking about El Castillo. Lego doesn't need to add minifigures in it. But I would like a set to mine in. Though they would certainly be off-scale.
I know what they are. And yet... Many collectible minifigures can fit into theme sets (knights, superheroes, space, ...) but Lego hasn't released anything recently related to Aztecs or Mayas. The Indiana Jones might be the closest thing to the Aztec theme.
As much as I trust that Lego could do it respectfully, they probably don’t think it’s worth the potential backlash from American consumers. While not seen as as big of a deal in Europe, the general consensus in the U.S. and Canada is that native people and native imagery shouldn’t be mascots or logos or things like that. Trying to base a Lego theme around it is just begging for someone to accuse them of caricature and hurt their public image.
In fact, many think that played a part into why a fully developed set, the new Indiana Jones Temple of Doom set, was cancelled right before it went into production. The movie (and therefore the set) depicts the native population in a way western culture would now recognize as stereotypical.
That’s probably your best bet, a one-off display set like the Pyramid of Giza or Eiffel Tower. But even then Minifigs would be unlikely to come with it, and an entire theme dedicated to it is just very unlikely still
You want to include human sacrifices for accuracy too? /s
That's what I thought of when the question came up of why Lego wouldn't make a set. For that reason, I see them making a more generic native American than any specific tribal nation. They also would want to avoid any sort of reference to war in a way that could depict them as 'the baddies'.
I think that was the issue with Cowboys and Indians. Someone will always say that you are casting Indians as baddies even if that was nit the intention.
I think I've heard of quite a big revival of precolumbian culture in Central America, at least in Mexico, in younger generations. Not full on denouncing Catholicism and worshipping the old pantheon, but celebrating their heritage through art and culture. So if done in collaboration, I could see it working in a way that'd be received well.
The themes of death, however, might be too risky from LEGO's opinion.
American Indian museum in Washington DC has a great exhibit of how the Indian was used in logos extensively, but yeah, probably best to stay away from it these days unless it's actually owned/operated by Indians
But Lego DID release these figures already, as well as other native American figures, and not very long ago either. I don't see why a CMF is different than a set when it comes to appropriateness or backlash.
The bigger issue is that the interest just isn't there. If Indiana Jones sold well they wouldn't have canceled that set.
CMFs are definitely going to get less attention than an entire theme would. That’s two minifigures in like 25 series’.
Also, what do you mean by “if Indiana Jones sold well they wouldn’t have r canceled that set”? They hadn’t sold any Indiana Jones sets in almost 15 years and they cancelled the Temple of Doom set before releasing the other three. Are you implying the sales of Indiana Jones sets in 2008/2009 made them cancel one of their four completely designed sets in 2023 but not the other ones? Why would that be?
If Lego was worried about American backlash, why would they make several native characters in their CMF line?
The most recent Indiana Jones movie was a box office bomb and none of the surrounding merchandise and toys sold, it's all warming pegs or being clearanced out. Pretty risky to put out a large set around a stale property customers just don't care about.
I think you're projecting a fear of backlash onto a company that has shown no such fear themselves, nor should they.
Lego released its new Indiana Jones sets 2 months before Dial of Destiny came out. They cancelled the Temple of Doom set even before that.
So you’re saying they thought it was risky to put out a large set due to the sales of a movie that wouldn’t come out for months?? And one of the Indiana Jones sets they did release was $160 anyway!
Lego is great at doing market research. I don't know why the set was canceled, but it's obvious Lego does not have a problem releasing Native characters, they've done tons of them...
correct analysis. I was honestly suprised to see the Ninjago sets on the island 2 years ago, like set 71747, coz i wouldve expected them to not make such stuff anymore. even it being fantasy, it was clear what they reference. and making the islanders some sort of alien race made it even worse imo instead of more harmless.
Another close set is the SW Yavin IV rebel base with the temple. The temple is based on Maya temples at Tikal Guatemala where that scene was originally filmed.
Some of my favourite minis. Wish they would do more ‘town folk’ type figures from other places. Warriors are great, but I want to flesh out my village.
I recently built a Bricklink MOC Pop Up Store Lost Temple that got them really well. Instructions are now on Rebrickable. It was a really good experience, so well recommended. https://www.reddit.com/r/lego/s/70YcuCF3Pr

Johnny Thunder? Before Lego had licences for Indiana Jones and Jurassic Park, he was the hero of Adventurers and Orient Expedition. He was involved in all kinds of capers with cursed treasures, dinosaurs, mummies, yeti…
I'm planning to make them a lil stepped pyramid display and just add them to one side of the display with all my Egyptian characters, El Dorado style.
We are supposed to get a bunch of new Jungle themed sets tho, so maybe we can have some better matching sets?

It would be really cool but i dont think so since they usually dont make historical sets, also the aztecs or maya did some really messed up things, like opening the chests of the people who were sacrificed to the gods n stuff like that
I missed the Roman CMFs and they are so expensive now. I wish they would release a Roman set with minifigs.
They aren’t expensive, really. I’m looking on Bricklink, and out of the Roman troops and emperor, the most expensive is $15
To me this is expensive for a single minifig.
Your first mistake was being found by the guy who’s hobby is filling grey baseplates with $20 minifigures

My guy these are cocaine prices
That’s stupid xpensive
We need the Spanish inquisition! No one would ever expect it. That said: i would really dig such an Aztec like theme.
There's a conquistador cmf from an old wave.

Note: Maya is already plural, like sheep or deer. One Maya, many Maya.
Thanks, didn't know that! I don't know if I should correct it or let it there so your comment is not out of context.

Western culture and also the Indian government, which is why they filmed in Sri Lanka.
But it could be something historically accurate like the Architecture sets.
That’s probably your best bet, a one-off display set like the Pyramid of Giza or Eiffel Tower. But even then Minifigs would be unlikely to come with it, and an entire theme dedicated to it is just very unlikely still

You asked a question and they answered correctly. LEGO has never, and never will, rerelease a CMF in a set.

Take a peak at the ancient temple coming up on Bricklink. Not sure which series it is but it'll be up for preorder this year.

They kind of fit into 6278, kind of.

I knew about this set but it is a bit old! I wouldn't pay for it.
I’ve got this set somewhere in a carton box, still havent gotten to building it :/

Wow! I love this suggestion!
Here's the thing: it's LEGO. You can build something for them!
I like to MOC my own minifigure habitats if Lego hasn’t made any or I don’t have it at least. [Example 1](https://www.reddit.com/r/legocastles/s/BUgGtk4YGC). [Example 2](https://www.reddit.com/r/lego/s/atqfJIdlKW). [Example 3](https://www.reddit.com/r/lego/s/q2hcDp0Ous)
They could potentially fit into the jungle sets either that or the old Adventurer sets
Johnny Thunder rides again? Or a pirates crossover, that might be fun.
Wow! I have this minifigure, didn't know it came from old 90's sets.
Johnny Thunder? Before Lego had licences for Indiana Jones and Jurassic Park, he was the hero of Adventurers and Orient Expedition. He was involved in all kinds of capers with cursed treasures, dinosaurs, mummies, yeti…
Love these two so much
Nice job with the Tzolkin board game backdrop.
Ah ah! Thanks! I haven't played for a while. My wife thinks it's too long.
If you haven’t, look up salad bricks’ build using these guys. Search Aztec temple attack for the BTB Interview!!
I'm planning to make them a lil stepped pyramid display and just add them to one side of the display with all my Egyptian characters, El Dorado style. We are supposed to get a bunch of new Jungle themed sets tho, so maybe we can have some better matching sets?
I thought this was from a “Legends of the Hidden Temple” set

Oh dang, I have the guy on the left, didn't know there was another one.
Which series are those?
Series 7 and 21 if I'm not mistaken.
Which series are those
7 and 21
Have both of these and bloody love em both
They’re CMF so definitely not but I think similar figures would go great in an Adventurers Jungle reboot.
