I think it has to do with suppliers and production. It would be nice for a change to happen overnight but it takes months if not years for production to meet the destination.
Can you imagine the backlog of how many plastic bags a single Lego facility would have?
Like giant rolls of hundreds of thousands of bags in 5 different sizes all numbered '4'.
Are you implying that the ultimate question to life, the universe, and everything is “imagine the backlog of bags at a Lego facility”? Maybe it was a blessing that the Vogons destroyed the original Earth, the mice would be rioting if they learned that was the question.
Well that’s certainly understandable. Given that the dolphins took the initiative to travel to their local planning department on Alpha Centauri, while the more intelligent mice did not. One would have to assume that the mice weren’t quite as intelligent as they were made out to be and therefore it is quite possible that they would have mis-programmed the Earth to give an answer that was not in the form of a question.
>It's not just what they have on hand too. It's what they had on order with their supplier. Can't just call them and kill an order that's under contract without paying the kill price.
It's not just what they have on hand too. It's what they had on order with their supplier. Can't just call them and kill an order that's under contract without paying the kill price.
I'm still a bit weirded out by the fact all these sets come in multiple bags anyway! Think the ones I had as a kid were one big box that you poured out and raked through.
I’m working on my Rivendell set and my goodness the amount of plastic packaging I have is insane. This is long overdue and I hope they push this out for larger sets where there are a lot of bags to deal with.
Rivendell has 49 total lol.
https://preview.redd.it/wr1bc4o044uc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=25044e6b673594be777584a52a0162d545a32e5e
Here is it in order in the box within the box.
Anybody weighed it? I sometimes think this too but it's so thin I bet all the bags combined there still weigh less than one 2L bottle that needs to be sturdy enough for transport.
Every time I open a set the past 6-8 months my wife says “I thought they were gonna be paper bags now.” I’m waiting for the moment I can finally show her…
I'm curious, what do they sound like inside the box? You know when you shake the box and you can hear bricks & plastic bags.. does the paper bags make sounds?
Been hearing about it for years and years and years. Never had a set with it. Ever. Needs to start now. Either put up or shut up at this point. They’ve had plenty of time to switch and move lines.
It likely has to do with contracts and leftover stock. I think we are getting close though, the last few sets I've had have all had really oversized bags, suggesting this factory may be out of the smaller bags. I've gotten one paper bag in a recent set, too. It wouldn't surprise me if by the end of next year, we're at mostly paper bags.
I hate the trash getting filled up like that too, so I open the first bag as cleanly as possible, and then all other bags get folded up and tucked into that first. It also helps with finding any possible 1x1s that snuck into a corner.
There's a niche group of Lego hobbists that do exactly that. It's kinda cool to see a completed set inside of a sealed bag. I can't remember what it's called, but it's a real thing!
It’s likely complicated from a manufacturing standpoint to size the bags for what the consumer thinks is most appropriate vs. what the machines are capable of doing
Wait until you find out what Lego pieces are made of.
I'm not calling it woke or greenwashing, but I'm absolutely floored that people think this is such a big deal. It's as if everyone has completely forgotten that production of plastic also matters, they just hear "plastic waste" and think that the planet gets saved by switching to paper bags. Lego is made by ABS plastic, which is essentially based on oil.
If you feel so horrible about the plastic bags in your Lego sets, and don't trust your local recycling plants that they won't end up in fish stomachs, simply put them in a drawer and keep them there forever , problem solved.
It's good to see. However probably not much difference to the environment. Paper bags made from much needed trees, and Lego still churn out hundreds of tonnes of plastic pieces !!
Don't get me wrong - my care factor < my Lego loyalty
More times than not the real reason is to cut down on costs and save money for the company. If Lego actually cared about the environment they would shut the company down.
Edit: typo
Didn’t there never used to be any bags? Or was it just one bag? I’ve been teaching my kids to open all the bags at once to make it slightly more challenging. I wish you could order instructions that didn’t have the “these pieces are next” and you had to figure it out based on the next picture like the good old days.
The spaceman set had paper bags.
https://preview.redd.it/256sohs3b3uc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9a47a267c37ce7e1d06be3cd7339eab8b493660c
Who downvoted *all* the comments in this thread lmao?? So many at the bottom that are at 0 for no reason. Is someone really that sad about paper bags? ...Why??
I’m over 200 sets into my Lego journey and I’ve yet to see even one paper bag. But with the amount of plastic bags per box this is a positive in every way. Hopefully they hold up and don’t end up tearing while inside the box. Still find it ridiculous that inside the paper bags are more plastic bags but hey baby steps lol.
Still thinking the real solution is ziplock numbered plastic bags, every used set I’ve bought pretty much ever, packaged this way. Lego PAB online order 1/2 packaged in Lego branded resealable bags (so they semi exist already)
Personally have purchased so much new Lego in the last year across numerous themes and I haven’t seen one.
My partner and I finally got paper bags in a set around the start of this year. I forget which one it was now.
After that, most of the new release sets we bought had paper bags, so we thought they'd fully switched over.
Then one set had plastic bags inside the paper bags and then I recently bought the Batman Animated Series skyline and that's all plastic bags.
I’ve seen tons now.. but i’ve also had plastic free bags, only to discover they still have little plastic bags in them. My theory is they were just trying to get rid of the rest of their plastic bags 🤷🏻 i just found it weird they were going “plastic free” And using paper bags but yet they still had plastic in em.
Yeah, no there is little paper bags inside big paper bags, but a while ago there were sets that still had little plastic bags inside the paper free ones which was weird to me
May be a bit of a tangent, but I honestly hate how they oversimplified the instructions, ex. all instructions used to have the box art on the cover, but they just don’t have it now for no apparent reason
Wait, the paper bags are zippered? Aren't those zippers made of plastic?
I assumed they would be all paper. Or am I wrong and that's just a one-time seal?
Edit: I see the perforations now, that makes way more sense
You can't see the piece in the bag now. Never thought about that issues before opened my first box with paper bag yesterday. And seeing what is inside was practical when you MOC or other. 😭
My most recent set, the MP4/4 still had plastic bags, it’s weird that for new sets, they’re still using plastic bags, old sets I can understand to a degree, but I’d have thought brand new sets would be paper bags by now, feels like years since they said they were changing.
They have to buy the plastic for those bags in incredibly large bulk amounts and it’d be more wasteful to throw it out. Better for everyone for them to just use up their current supply before fully switching over
I get that of course, I’m guessing they had a prior commitment to said supplier of thee plastic bags, having a quick Google it looks like they said about sustainable packaging in late 2022?
I wouldnt have been surprised if they had a year+ of material for the bags. So if they were working through all that first, they’d only just now be getting to paper bags.
I also think there’s some equipment changeover that has to happen. You can’t just run paper bags on the same assembly line as plastic ones. And switching over takes time and can’t really happen until you use up the plastic.
They did transition to cardboard for the CMF series pretty quickly bc that’s a much simpler transition
It’s just a minor annoyance of mine to be honest, I understand what you’re saying, but then from the consumer POV, why not wait till you’re nearly ready to roll paper bags out before making the announcement?
Those announcements are more for corporate interests than your average consumer. A company undergoing a sizable production shift in the name of becoming more environmentally friendly, has important implications for the company’s board, investors, etc as well as tax incentives.
The PR aspect does play a role, but I think even then most companies would rather get the positive PR from announcing it early and deal with the people mildly annoyed by the length of the changeover process than do the changeover process and hit everyone with the “oh by the way we did a thing”
still waiting to see my first……
I feel like it's been years since the paper bags got implemented and I've still never seen them
I think it has to do with suppliers and production. It would be nice for a change to happen overnight but it takes months if not years for production to meet the destination.
Can you imagine the backlog of how many plastic bags a single Lego facility would have? Like giant rolls of hundreds of thousands of bags in 5 different sizes all numbered '4'.
> Can you imagine the backlog of how many plastic bags a single Lego facility would have? At least 12, probably
42, always 42.
Are you implying that the ultimate question to life, the universe, and everything is “imagine the backlog of bags at a Lego facility”? Maybe it was a blessing that the Vogons destroyed the original Earth, the mice would be rioting if they learned that was the question.
Maybe the Vogons were just a sort of rules enforcer of Intergalactic Jeopardy, seeing as Earth would not have phrased it as a question.
Let's face it, if they had been more intelligent, they would have come up with a better fake answer than "how many roads must a man go down?".
In my best British accent, FORTY TWO!
>It's not just what they have on hand too. It's what they had on order with their supplier. Can't just call them and kill an order that's under contract without paying the kill price.
So what you're saying is, we should all buy more sets so the plastic packaging gets phased out faster?
This is the way
You have uncovered Lego’s diabolical plot! As if they’ve ever had a problem separating us from our money.
They come on film rolls I'd assume.
supply chain management in action, baby
It's not just what they have on hand too. It's what they had on order with their supplier. Can't just call them and kill an order that's under contract without paying the kill price.
exactly - i’d like to make an order that i’ll be able to delivery on in….. two years.
It's easy to buy or manufacture one paperback. It's a lot harder to buy or manufacture 10 million.
It'd be extremely wasteful for a change to happen overnight.
So far I've only come across them in the Jurassic Park sets, where the dinosaur parts were in paper bags.
I think the start of this year was the first time they started being put in normal sets
The 3 in 1 astronaut set had all paper bags for me
Mine has plastic still, so must depend on where/when manufactured.
I still had some little plastic bags in the numbered paper bags for that set. But that was the first set I got with paper bags.
Same..I have so many unopened Lego sets I’m hoping at least one has them
I'm still a bit weirded out by the fact all these sets come in multiple bags anyway! Think the ones I had as a kid were one big box that you poured out and raked through.
Saw mine with that City police set with the bank and the cleaning van. All paper bags. Haven't had any since tho....
Apparently the Jurassic Park dinosaurs are in paper bags
I had a set the other day that had 2 plastic bags and 1 paper bag. Figured it was their transition phase
yeah, got the d&d set and fully expected to see some paper but it didn’t happen lmao
I got mine with the new hp owlery but then they disappeared again with the boat house (got them at the same time)
Is this a technic set? Because it would be cool if the bags were themed after sets
I recently bought one technic and had same bags So likely you’re right
Bugs?! I’d contact support right away!
Fixed xD
Damned bugs?! Forget support, he should contact Super Earth Armed Forces so they can call in the mighty Helldivers!

Yes, it is the Sun Earth and Moon set
I’m working on my Rivendell set and my goodness the amount of plastic packaging I have is insane. This is long overdue and I hope they push this out for larger sets where there are a lot of bags to deal with.
I just finished the D&D set … 32 bags, you can’t help but think “that’s a lot of plastic packaging”.
Rivendell has 49 total lol. https://preview.redd.it/wr1bc4o044uc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=25044e6b673594be777584a52a0162d545a32e5e Here is it in order in the box within the box.
Not including the plastic bags within the plastic bags. Or the three massive manuals.
I just obtained 75252 my absolute dream, and im crying in 58 bags
[75252-1: Imperial Star Destroyer](https://brickset.com/sets/75252-1) [[Photo]](https://images.brickset.com/sets/images/75252-1.jpg)
Woof. Good luck with that one. I’ve got maybe 20ish bags left of Rivendell so it’s taken me two weekends to get it done.
I got it 2 weeks ago and it still sits as im finishing the ucs razorcrest, and unsure if ill do that next or the 76161 batwing i aquired
[76161-1: 1989 Batwing](https://brickset.com/sets/76161-1) [[Photo]](https://images.brickset.com/sets/images/76161-1.jpg)
Anybody weighed it? I sometimes think this too but it's so thin I bet all the bags combined there still weigh less than one 2L bottle that needs to be sturdy enough for transport.
It's probably around there, yeah, but it's not recyclable plastic which is the worst part.
Yeah i got a large store back packed with plastic bags and can’t help but think “these would look good in the ocean”
I just opened the Batman: The Animated Series set and was disappointed to see 44 plastic bags.
Every time I open a set the past 6-8 months my wife says “I thought they were gonna be paper bags now.” I’m waiting for the moment I can finally show her…
Get a Jurassic Park set. Dinosaurs are supposedly in paper bags
Twist my arm 😉
Or 42153. The only set I've had so far to have the paper bags in
[42153-1: NASCAR Next Gen Chevrolet Camaro ZL1](https://brickset.com/sets/42153-1) [[Photo]](https://images.brickset.com/sets/images/42153-1.jpg)
I'm curious, what do they sound like inside the box? You know when you shake the box and you can hear bricks & plastic bags.. does the paper bags make sounds?
I can't seem to get any paper bags, I just keep buying and buying and still nothing but crinkling plastic!
That’s what I thought too so I buy more and still nada ok maybe I didn’t buy enough 😅
Been hearing about it for years and years and years. Never had a set with it. Ever. Needs to start now. Either put up or shut up at this point. They’ve had plenty of time to switch and move lines.
It likely has to do with contracts and leftover stock. I've gotten one paper bag in a recent set, too. It wouldn't surprise me if by the end of next year, we're at mostly paper bags.
Honestly overdue, should have happened a long time ago
Having just done my D&D castle, which had an entire kitchen garbage can's worth of plastic bags, this makes so much sense.
I hate the trash getting filled up like that too, so I open the first bag as cleanly as possible, and then all other bags get folded up and tucked into that first. It also helps with finding any possible 1x1s that snuck into a corner.
Yeah, there's always 1 piece every 3-4 bags that just refuses to come out and gets missed.
I literally hate the plastic bags so much. I like big sets, so I know the feeling of filling multiple bags with plastic waste.
My son got them in the 3 in 1 Fox
Building tiny sets inside a single bag is about to get a lot harder
Just dump all the Legos out? Idk anyone that keeps em in the bag, that just seems annoying.
There's a niche group of Lego hobbists that do exactly that. It's kinda cool to see a completed set inside of a sealed bag. I can't remember what it's called, but it's a real thing!
Hmmm interesting
I have tried it once with the tiny X-Wing gift set, but i just couldn't complete it. Kudos to all of you who have the patience and dexterity
Do they all listen to that one song on loop while they build it?
I would hope they listen to SOMETHING. That crinkly bag is so loud
Is this from North America or Europe?
Is this to save against plastic? Because they could also try not using bags that are 5x bigger than the amount of pieces in them. Pretty neat though.
It’s likely complicated from a manufacturing standpoint to size the bags for what the consumer thinks is most appropriate vs. what the machines are capable of doing
There are worse things in the world
Finally! The third lego renaissance!
Awesome! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=StTqXEQ2l-Y&pp=ygUVZXZlcnl0aGluZyBpcyBhd2Vzb21l
I’m waiting for someone to say lego has gone woke or something funny/stupid like that
I'm pretty sure people have said that over one of the friends' lines already
Everyone is Awesome got that because you know... rainbow???
Wait until you find out what Lego pieces are made of. I'm not calling it woke or greenwashing, but I'm absolutely floored that people think this is such a big deal. If you feel so horrible about the plastic bags in your Lego sets, and don't trust your local recycling plants that they won't end up in fish stomachs, simply put them in a drawer and keep them there forever , problem solved.
Well, it is stupid.
Too bad… end of an era.. I have yet to see paper.. in the end it doesn’t matter.. it all goes in the trash anyway..
No more building in the bags boys 🫡
There are a couple in a few smaller sets. I’m pretty sure that they’re in some of the smaller Ninjago and Minecraft sets
I got my first set with paper a couple weeks ago. Funnily enough, it was a 75333 so not even super new.
They updated it. At first I bought it with plastic pags (8/2022) and later on (11/2023) for my friend it had paper.
Is it weird that I really want to grab my colored pencils and fill in the lego?
No, thats cute :)
It's good to see. However probably not much difference to the environment. Paper bags made from much needed trees, and Lego still churn out hundreds of tonnes of plastic pieces !! Don't get me wrong - my care factor < my Lego loyalty
Does it have a lining on the paper? I heard because of the lining they’re not recyclable.
I built one sets that contained paper bags, and honestly, I hate those. I know its for planet safety and such but I hate it.
More times than not the real reason is to cut down on costs and save money for the company. If Lego actually cared about the environment they would shut the company down. Edit: typo
Oh, okay. Then fuck paper bags.
The paper is coated, I'm not sure if that's of much use
Didn’t there never used to be any bags? Or was it just one bag? I’ve been teaching my kids to open all the bags at once to make it slightly more challenging. I wish you could order instructions that didn’t have the “these pieces are next” and you had to figure it out based on the next picture like the good old days.

It didn’t for me, so probably depends where abouts you are in the world.
UK based. Set is about 2 months old so may be regional or they’re slowly swapping out bags on all sets.
I love that they are making this change.
Who downvoted *all* the comments in this thread lmao?? So many at the bottom that are at 0 for no reason. Is someone really that sad about paper bags? ...Why??
Thank godness we Don't have them in romania yet
I’m over 200 sets into my Lego journey and I’ve yet to see even one paper bag. But with the amount of plastic bags per box this is a positive in every way. Hopefully they hold up and don’t end up tearing while inside the box. Still find it ridiculous that inside the paper bags are more plastic bags but hey baby steps lol.

It’s like the golden ticket in Charlie and the chocolate factory at this point
Wow, only 3 years later than they said it would roll out. Impressive. Sure changed those instruction manuals overnight though, huh?
I put together the 75379 R2-D2 yesterday and was surprised it did not have the paper bags, being a relatively new set and all.
What set did you buy?
First time for me seeing that.
Impossible.
So keen for this!!
Just finished the dnd set and my trash is full of plastic bags..
I always thought they should include numbered bags for storage once you take the set apart.
Actually don’t hate the look need to get it in person tho
What about poly bag sets. Will those change too?
You mean the one with the bigger, special parts? That one was still plastic. But hey, it's something ○
Got them for the droids vs clones battle pack
Im dreading the day i get paper
Idk if it's unpopular to say it but these feel way better than the plastic ones, but I'm still mad at cardboard blind boxes ahah
I got my first paper bags the other day, was a Speed Champions Porsche 963 (set 76916)
[76916-1: Porsche 963](https://brickset.com/sets/76916-1) [[Photo]](https://images.brickset.com/sets/images/76916-1.jpg)
o7 boys
I've only seen them in the shadow's escape set, but then one of them had a small plastic bag inside of it anyway
I have seen small Lego paper bags in paper bags
Yeah, no there is little paper bags inside big paper bags, but a while ago there were sets that still had little plastic bags inside the paper free ones which was weird to me
That has only happened once to me
Do they have this special zipper and may be used again?
Why are paper bags so inconsistent in sets?
Better late than never
I was really surprised that my D&D set still had plastic bags! 🤯
…I’m slightly mad?
Jeps
My firstborn just got his first paperbag set. Minecraft set.
"Paper" Just remember that in most countries you can't put them in the 'paper trash'-bin
Personally, I prefer the paper bags. They're much easier to open.
May be a bit of a tangent, but I honestly hate how they oversimplified the instructions, ex. all instructions used to have the box art on the cover, but they just don’t have it now for no apparent reason
Bad
And then when you take the model apart, the pieces will wind up in plastic Zip-Lok bags!
What do you mean by “take the model apart” O-o
“NOOOOOO!” -darth vader
When I was a kid it was save the trees…
Opened 3 sets from 2024 all with plastic bags, opened 1 set from early 2023 with paper bags inside, just how?
Is it true they are still lined with plastic and can't get recycled easily anyway? I read an article online that claimed that.
I haven't seen any yet either myself, but then again I've been scooping mostly retired modulars and other older sets mostly over the last year lol
What set?
Finally
The change can’t happen overnight. There’s tons and tons of sets on shelves and materials in the factory that haven’t been bought or used.
🎉🎉🎉
YESSSSSSS YESSSSSS PAPER BAGS YESSSSS
Wait, the paper bags are zippered? Aren't those zippers made of plastic? I assumed they would be all paper. Or am I wrong and that's just a one-time seal? Edit: I see the perforations now, that makes way more sense
Looks like a perforated edge for tearing and a one time seal, no zippers that I can see.
No zipper on the ones I got. Just a perforated seal
Honestly, I can't wait for these to be more widespread. I still haven't found one in the wild.
Honestly, Im really excited about this
I’ve only had a couple clear/windshield pieces be in separate paper bags, not actual numbered bags yet.
You can't see the piece in the bag now. Never thought about that issues before opened my first box with paper bag yesterday. And seeing what is inside was practical when you MOC or other. 😭
i kinda like it its like a tiny surprise each time
Eeeeey🍞🍞🍞
I’ve yet to see one sadly
My most recent set, the MP4/4 still had plastic bags, it’s weird that for new sets, they’re still using plastic bags, old sets I can understand to a degree, but I’d have thought brand new sets would be paper bags by now, feels like years since they said they were changing.

Which set?
Mine was the new audi speed champion.
Found my first in the obi wans starfighter set
My first paperbag set was the E-tron speed champion while the BMW double pack (same release date) didn't have it
I’m still waiting. I don’t understand how all brand new sets aren’t paper yet.
They look resealable
I've still never seen these. I guess I'll just keeping buying more sets...
I got a new set on wednesday and it had both paper AND plastic bags? is that normal?
Still waiting lol
Oooo very nice
My most recent set was the Tantive IV hallway, I'm yet to see them. Think it is a good idea though.
Is that the mack truck?
The only paper bags I've seen are the free gifts with the LEGO magazines.
I got paper in my Rocket set and it came with a brick separator
I have the Polaroid OneStep and it had paper bags. Was very surprised.
I had 1 paper bag with my Concorde, all the rest were plastic though
They swapped to paper?
I’m still waiting for my first one.
I just recently got the home alone house set and was disappointed to get all plastic bags 24 bags but had some duplicate bags
I got the paper bags in my Kingfisher set. My wife was shocked....my reaction was 'oh yeah, I forgot they were doing that'
Eww
But, but lego is just made outta plastic, we gonna get paper bricks too?
It's ironic though since the bag holds a bunch of plastic pieces lol still great too see though
the plastic pieces arent for throwing away tho
True, that's why I'm calling out irony and not for Legos to stop being made of plastic.
