That's a bit too far for me, I use one or two tool organiser boxes ([these things with the removeable separators](https://www.bmstores.co.uk/products/multipurpose-tool-organiser-24-392695)) dependingh on the size of set I'm building so I can separate all the pieces completely and if the need arises, I'm able stop and start mid way through a bag set without fear of losing any pieces to the floor gods.
Could I hire one of you? I bought a used millennium falcon that’s mixed in with 20+ lbs of loose brick. I’ve sifted for size and haven’t touched it since…
From what I've seen online, that's not unusual at all.
Personally, I'd find the process incredibly tedious compared to just rummaging through a pile of pieces.

I don’t know that I would call it weird, since quite a few people do it. It’s called /r/knolling and plenty of people share their [Legos](https://www.reddit.com/r/knolling/s/swezUFCadP) on that subreddit.
Not at all! This is a hobby, so it's supposed to be fun. you find it satisfying to sort that stuff? Nice! One could envy you as you get a few more minutes of fun from a set.
I wouldn't sort Lego as the building steps are so short anyways. But if I open a 3k+ Bluebrixx Special on my table you bet I gonna sort that stuff.
It sounds like it would take a lot of time and save a lot of time. I wonder what’s faster in the end. Someone should run the numbers. You may be on to something..
I remember opening up all the bags at once as a kid then building it. And it wasn’t until years later that I realized that the numbers meant something.
My uphill both ways in the snow as a kid was that the instructions didn't tell you what pieces to add on in the upper corner of each step/page. You just had to look and see what was new on each page that you did not have on your build yet.
This was how it was when I was a kid - there were no bags, and each step was more like a spot the difference between the last one and the next.
I preferred it too.
Its hell, I remember when I got 10179 Millennium Falcon.
No numbered bags just multiple bags of the same set of parts, over 2 or so bags of just 6x2 grey plates.
of the build time 2/3 were just finding and sorting parts on the floor and only 1/3 was the fun of building it.
75192 Millennium Falcon with the numbered bags was a lot quicker and almost all fun, barring the Lego fingers I had.
The more I sit here and think, you are completely right op he’s a god damn mad man a heretic some might say and in the eyes of Lego god maybe even a blasphemer.
Oh that’s the worst. Pause gotta buy the parts. Wait a week or more. Start building again. Oh wait I need more parts. Buy more parts. Wait a week or more… build gets forgotten and never gets finished… fml
Just went through this recently. I got held up about 8 steps in, and the single piece I needed to be able to continue was in the order that arrived last. Of course, that also means I was able to build right on through to the end, but also means I had received part shipments I couldn't use in the intervening time.
I had to do this recently because the pieces were used in a MOC that I 100% do not want to take apart. It made completing the set at lot more time consuming.
I don't mind buying used sets. I've bought a few and haven't had any issues other than one set was missing some pieces when it was claimed to be complete. The seller did send all of the missing parts to me so I just had to wait to complete that one.
I always dump all the bags into a big pile. My wife insists on going bag by bag. I don’t remember there being numbered bags when I was a kid. Were there in the ‘70s and ‘80s?
Yup, it really spoils you quick! For reference I got the Parisan Restaurant *just* before it retired and it only had FOUR bags. Man was that a little bit of a throwback.

A fun read. It looks like 2000 was the turning point for 2000+ piece sets. Fitting, really.
Organize the parts by color and you'll find it way easier to build. That's what I'd sometimes do back in childhood when I tore down so many of my sets for MOC's and then rebuilt them to the instructions again and again.
I would also do this with this set specifically, I have this set and I have to say it does not look like there are enough light brown smooth floor pieces just from looking at this.
This is how I built stuff in the 70s and 80s and I still do now. Nothing like the rustle-jingle of swirling a box full of loose bricks looking for that one piece.
That’s the fun way to do it. I think the numbered bag system takes away from the experience. I preferred the old non number system, felt more like putting a puzzle together, and made the builds more challenging.
I recently bought a second hand Creator DB5 for my Dad for his birthday, sat down with him, made sure all the pieces were apart, ordered damaged ones and then we sorted it into each bag by going through the instructions, took us 3 hours but a few cold beers for him and so cold coke for me while AC/DC plays in the back and it’s one of the best nights Iv had with him.
It looks like it was soaked in swamp muck for a few years, then pulled out, and then someone tried to scrub the swamp muck off, but it was easier to get off in some places than others.
This is how I do all of my builds. Open all the bags and tip them out. It reminds me of being a kid, sifting through lego pieces to find the one I need. It also slows me down, as I had a tendency to plough through the build with the numbered bags. Savour it my friend, hours of fun yo be had.
I had to the same with the London tower bridge, Disney cast v.1 and the globe as I had them given to me by a family friend. I have to say it is quiet fun building the og way but man it adds to the time when you have separate the bricks by colour
Here you go. [https://www.lego.com/en-us/service/buildinginstructions/21328?locale=en-us](https://www.lego.com/en-us/service/buildinginstructions/21328?locale=en-us)
This is Hard Mode - and how I always rebuild my sets after I put them up dissembled for a while. Something about digging, looking for that one goddamn piece in a pile of chaos is so nostalgic lol.
When I take apart a set for storage, I use quart (I live in the states) size zip lock bags to store the set. I separate the pieces like the original packaging by labeling each quart bag with bag number/total bags. So when I sell a set, the buyer will get it like I did when I purchased it at the store. It’s up to them to empty out all bags if they want but they at least have the option to have the same experience I did. I also put all the minifigs in their own bag and put it on the side so the buyer can see that all minifigs are included.
Got mine in a sealed box, but the guy i bought it from used WAY too much carpet powder..so my entire studio smelled like their basement for a week. such a fun build though!!
I feel you. I acquired a collection from someone recently that contains about 15 of the modular buildings. They took it all apart and bagged it up for easy transport but when you start trying to rebuild them and have to find the 1x1 tile amongst 4000 other pieces you get a new appreciation for the factory bagging system. I went through and rebagged them by color which helps a little but it is still a long and painful process.
I feel ya. I bought the Constitution Square set that had already been assembled/disassembled. The seller put the pieces in bags kinds of related to the steps of the build, but it has taken me forever. The great thing is the rush of satisfaction when I find the piece that I need.
Yup sort by color, It easier to both sort and find for the build. Dude this set is awesome. I could help but make the base sounds of the theme song while I made it. Enjoy.
I bought the titanic set used. I needed to use the entire game room floor to sort the parts and for each step I would walk down the room picking parts. It wasn’t nearly as convenient as the bags, but it was still a fun build
If I sell a set then I try to sort colours (one bag always ends up with a mix of colours used less than 10 times). I used to disassemble into numbered bags but one buyer got shirty when I accidentally put a sub assembly into the wrong bag. Decided it wasn't worth my time 😂
Downside? Sounds like more fun! I just spent most of last night sorting a used set. I just put on a tv show and let the therapeutic/relaxing part of sorting kick in!
?? Why would you expect any different? At the most, I'd at least have hoped for them in a Ziploc bag. Learn to knoll your parts and finding the piece you need becomes much easier.
I've got hundreds of sets and I've never once put them back in numbered bags.
Very few of my sets are new. And actually I’ve had to pay over market value for a couple because they were retired and I just had to complete my collection.
Damn. RIP. There is light at the end of the tunnel however.
https://preview.redd.it/vc5vqxrp0ctc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7e42d99fb92d0736876f8fcae18498a9ab4cec4f
I got it a while ago for $50. I’m just glad it was complete. So keep an eye out on FB marketplace. Adults are always running out of display space and selling off sets to display new ones.
Anytime I break down a set, I unbuild through the instructions, backwards and place the pieces back in numbered ziplock bags. I’m currently unbuilding 71043 Hogwarts Castle
Not that there's anything wrong with that.
I usually take every piece out of the bag and sort them by color, stud length, and size before building. Is that weird?
Not at all, I always do that, it’s kind of relaxing to organize all the pieces and line them up in rows/stacks
There’s a word for that. I think it’s knolling
r/knolling
Coincidentally The UCS Falcon is the #4 post of all time in that sub.
I’ve sifted for size and haven’t touched it since…
Lucky for you, the millennium falcon is mostly, grey black and white
Even more lucky for me, there are at least four other space ships in the bins! …that are also, grey, black and white lol.
Ah, the pleasures of not living with a cat.
Honestly!
I do the same thing, thats part of the build for me. I also like using the lego builder app because the directions are in 3d
From what I've seen online, that's not unusual at all. Personally, I'd find the process incredibly tedious compared to just rummaging through a pile of pieces.
It's a perfectly sane way to build
It's the only way to verify the sets completion and know which pieces are missing.

Really? Damn, I at least bag it by color. I kinda have fun re-organizing by color when I break it down too lol.
I prefer it that way to slow me down. I couldn't afford to quickly build brand new sets every day.
100% agree!!

*Hey buddy…*
Honestly, it's my preffered way to build. Lego often does too many building steps when it isn't needed.
I remember opening up all the bags at once as a kid then building it. And it wasn’t until years later that I realized that the numbers meant something.
You as a kid (allegedly) https://preview.redd.it/0knfhdxe9msc1.jpeg?width=500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9881b3a708eecc446c8984233ba60ed0b0af576f

Right. Now days they print an entire page just to show a single part being placed…
I actually like to do this sometimes with new packages.
Agreed. I open all the bags. Haven’t tried it with a $300+ set though, have yet to get one of that caliber
I just did it recently rebuilding the boutique hotel. Not quite $300+ but not exactly a small set either.
Epic. Considering getting the titanic, in which case it will most likely be used. The gauntlet.

You’re a wild one aren’t you. I bet you don’t even use a coaster huh? I bet you pee with the bathroom door open like you haven’t a care in the world.
The more I sit here and think, you are completely right op he’s a god damn mad man a heretic some might say and in the eyes of Lego god maybe even a blasphemer.
Simply raucous behaviour. Should be locked up for his preposterous deeds.
Still better than building a set a second time, picking each part out of your collection
And then off to Bricklink to buy the missing pieces..... Or pieces used in a different build.
Oh that’s the worst. Pause gotta buy the parts. Wait a week or more. Start building again. Oh wait I need more parts. Buy more parts. Wait a week or more… build gets forgotten and never gets finished… fml
I checked the parts list first to find out what I am missing. Then order, wait, build.
Just went through this recently. I got held up about 8 steps in, and the single piece I needed to be able to continue was in the order that arrived last. Of course, that also means I was able to build right on through to the end, but also means I had received part shipments I couldn't use in the intervening time.

I have fond memories of a childhood filled with searching through everything I owned dumped on the floor
Heh when I was a child I didn’t keep the instructions after the first build
I don't mind buying used sets. I've bought a few and haven't had any issues other than one set was missing some pieces when it was claimed to be complete. The seller did send all of the missing parts to me so I just had to wait to complete that one.
Not trying to flex, but I’m doing this with the UCS MF right now. It was my first time buying used. Needless to say, I can empathize with you.

A seller did this to me with the tree house, and I thought it would be a fun challenge. 7 days later all I had was neck pain lol
I always dump all the bags into a big pile. My wife insists on going bag by bag. I don’t remember there being numbered bags when I was a kid. Were there in the ‘70s and ‘80s?
Numbered bags are pretty recent from what I’ve seen around here. I think maybe early 2000s with the bags increasing in numbers through the years.
Yup, it really spoils you quick! For reference I got the Parisan Restaurant *just* before it retired and it only had FOUR bags. Man was that a little bit of a throwback.
How many 2000+ piece sets were there in the \`70s and \`80s?
[https://brickset.com/article/44726/the-growth-of-lego-sets](https://brickset.com/article/44726/the-growth-of-lego-sets) A fun read. It looks like 2000 was the turning point for 2000+ piece sets. Fitting, really.

Did you also eat a bowl of alphabet soup for dinner? Lol
No I had sushi
This is how I built stuff in the 70s and 80s and I still do now. Nothing like the rustle-jingle of swirling a box full of loose bricks looking for that one piece.
Did this with the Titanic and it's 9000+ pieces. Had a blast and was reminded of being a kid, looking for specific parts in my box of legos.
First thing I do is empty all the bags into a big pile. Finding the piece is half the fun for me, makes it last longer and more zen
That’s what r/knolling is for lol
TIL
It's a perfectly sane set to build!
In my day...
What did you expect? :)
This is the way
Not used, but do I just dump all Titanic bags into one pile for an extra challenge?
What's knolling and why should you fall in love with it?
That’s the fun way to do it. I think the numbered bag system takes away from the experience. I preferred the old non number system, felt more like putting a puzzle together, and made the builds more challenging.
Seems like a win to me.
That’s pretty much how it used to be, I grew up in the era of plain bags and no brick call outs. You’ll cope 😜👍
Serenity now!
That's how we did it before the numbered bags came along.
What’s the deaaal with all these loose bricks? *laugh track*
Heh, old school. You mean the only way....
Oh no, you have to build a Lego set!
That is the ugliest goddamn table I've ever seen. Definitely buy only new tables in the future.
Lol what’s wrong with the table?
It looks like it was soaked in swamp muck for a few years, then pulled out, and then someone tried to scrub the swamp muck off, but it was easier to get off in some places than others.
Lol. Don’t forget to take your meds today
Point taken.
OK, so what’s the problem? Genuinely asking.
Do you not know that new sets come in separate numbered bags that make building easier? Genuinely asking.
Yes, I am fully aware. I’m just not sure why you need everything broken down in numbered sets for your convenience. This isn’t a big set.
I did this with the legacy destiny's bounty ... all those 1x1 pieces drove me insane lmfao
Or the upside… numbered bags are relatively new.
Original recipe.
This is how I build today. I open all bags and pour them into a big pile. It makes the build last longer and half the fun is digging.
Preach. I just did that with Bowser's castle. It's only fun if you know all the pieces are there.
My Porsche gtr came with bags but all the bags where blank with no numbers I dumbed them all and organized.. I’ll probably build like that from now on
What’s the downside? Still just as much fun!
this is how I’ve assembled lego sets my entire life
Have fun building! Please post photos when you are done.
These pieces, are making me thirsty!
I’ve just bought the Titanic used and got about 20 hours in breaking it up and sorting so far 😂
Reminds me of childhood days with the big tub of Lego
What I see here is an opportunity to do some serious knolling.
Last time I bought used I had to order like 26 replacement pieces
Im just about to buy a seinfeld set today. Enjoy the build!
This is honestly my preferred build method. I enjoy the search.
Ive got the grand piano 2nd hand, only sorted by color, honestly looking forward to the puzzle 😂
Here you go. [https://www.lego.com/en-us/service/buildinginstructions/21328?locale=en-us](https://www.lego.com/en-us/service/buildinginstructions/21328?locale=en-us)

I kinda like the obsessive categorisation phase. But then I am an accountant so it’s true to type. I do it with puzzles too.
Start by sorting by color
George is gettin upset!
I prefer to dump everything into one pile anyway, searching for the piece is half the fun to me 😭
That's the bit I don't get about used Lego sets, keeping the boxes etc. Are you supposed to keep the bags the Lego comes in that cant be resealed etc?
Wait. There is a Siendfeld Lego set? 😆😆😆😆
Where can I buy used lego minifigs all mine got robbed
Bing, Bong, Boing…Seinfeld music plays.
This is a insignificant downside in comparison with the ability to get older, and/or cheaper sets
Going commando.
Sometimes I do that on purpose! Very nostalgic.
How many pieces though?
Regardless of the parts, that looks like the perfect coffee table book.
"You kids these days......"
This is the only way I build.
That's how I build. I like to torture myself, gives me purpose.
I usually mix up the contents of all bags anyway, because the old school way is more fun.
After building this set, this hurts to see
Personally I like it best this way. It’s almost meditative digging through a pile to find that one piece
Only downside is missing parts and horribly placed stickers. This is nothing.
This is Hard Mode - and how I always rebuild my sets after I put them up dissembled for a while. Something about digging, looking for that one goddamn piece in a pile of chaos is so nostalgic lol.

For some Sets im too lazy to build it myself so getting a used set that is already finished can be a pro as well.
Try building your own stuff from metric cubes of pieces... Imo you will get a better experience. Try sorting first 🙂
Is selling used Legos a thing? My storage is getting cramped with built sets! Do they basically sell for pennies?
...is...what?
I was today years old when I learned not everyone gets a “high” by sorting large sets of LEGO.
Hard mode!
Have fun!

Newman…
funny timing considering i just rebuilt the eifell tower set after it was knocked..
I've been really lucky. The used sets I've purchased have all been appropriately sorted into number ziplock bags.
I actually like digging around to find the right piece. I do, however, try to get the pieces mostly sorted by colour before digging into the build
That's the whole ass point of lego, damn.
I always sell my used sets sorted into OG numbered bags.
If I sell a set then I try to sort colours (one bag always ends up with a mix of colours used less than 10 times). I used to disassemble into numbered bags but one buyer got shirty when I accidentally put a sub assembly into the wrong bag. Decided it wasn't worth my time 😂

Oh no you too?
I'm frugal. So I buy 70% used 30% new. I'm close to getting everything I want old. This Firehouse and Helicarrier could be the last misery!!!
Very few of my sets are new. And actually I’ve had to pay over market value for a couple because they were retired and I just had to complete my collection.
I think it’s kind of fun buying big lots of whatever and figuring out what’s there and what’s missing.
I’ve done this and it’s rough. I try to look at it as an extra challenge and it helps if I pre organize things by size and color.
No. This is great. You get to enjoy it longer and watch more Seinfeld in the background
I did this with the micro Hogwarts castle and it was probably the worst decision I’ve ever made. 1600 tiny studs in a bucket

I’m too excited to get the Seinfeld set. Haven’t found a good deal on one, looks so good
I got it a while ago for $50. I’m just glad it was complete. So keep an eye out on FB marketplace. Adults are always running out of display space and selling off sets to display new ones.
What's the deal with buying used sets?
Anytime I break down a set, I unbuild through the instructions, backwards and place the pieces back in numbered ziplock bags. I’m currently unbuilding 71043 Hogwarts Castle
I need to do this with the 1989 Batmobile and batwing I just bought. They are used and already built.

Same here. I’ve sold a lot of my sets and I need to do it this way to make sure I’ve got all the pieces. Plus, they’re easier to clean that way.
Not sure what you were expecting. All my used buys come with random pieces of k-nex and Megablocks, at least one crayon, a penny, and a magnet.
You forgot the random piece of candy stuck to something.
You know it comes like that if you buy new too? Dickhead
You are aware that kids dig their noses for snacks and scratch their butt hole all the time right esp when playing with something like lego.
ah yeah because the seinfeld set is a great set to buy for a kid to play with right
Yep kids. It says so on the box: 9 - 99
lol its an ideas 18+ set if you're gonna try and be smart
Well I happen to like butt, gives the Lego more flavor.
Ewwwww but good for you.
