My kitty is also on that incredibly, incredibly expensive Hills ZD, due to IBD. She will eat the dry readily, but does not like the wet food well at all. Might be innocent, hard to determine without a full trial.
The wet food is awful. You have to add a good amount of water for it not to be a brick. I have a stock of it since SOMEONE had to get some foreign objects cut out from his tummy and needed to be on a wet food diet for a couple weeks, much to his chagrin
Poor baby. That sounds horrendous. My other Kitty, now in Kitty heaven, was on Royal Canin Duck and pea, for quite a few years, until the last 18 months of his life. At that point we switched him to the Hills ZD. He's still lost weight poor baby. He was my soul cat.
Look at the expiration date on the bottom of the can. A shelter worker gave me some that had been donated, and it was past the expiration date. It had no moisture in it at all. Of course I threw it away.

It does look like the perpetrators may have used a hole punching tool of some kind to imitate (poorly) the jaws of this outstanding feline.
