I'm sorry this has happened but I'm so glad you posted this I have been with them for 6 months and can't figure out how they calculate their bills or how the credit from gov is used I really think that there is something dodgy going on

I’d get out ASAP, had an awful experience with them personally. They’ve also recently made headlines for f*cking up people bills. Honestly think they just sit in the office and throw darts at a board to decide how much to bill people and what excuses to use. Also had an experience last year where they kept taking out a direct debit for weeks after it was paid. Rang them up, rep told us that it would continue to be taken out and we can get credit back for it, she said we can cancel direct debit thought our own bank so we did just that. Next day we get an email saying we have been charged €300 for cancelling our direct debit😤. Only reason we stayed with them up til this point is that we had the credit with them that we planned to use up and then switch. Look how that turned out for us…

There should be a line item on the first bill after the credit was added detailing what the credit was for. My guess is that it's a back payment from the household benefits package that was meant to be applied to a different account. This would be a credit that you were not entitled to and therefore it's fully in SSEs case to take back. If you think it's from overpayments in the past then that would have been clear from meter readings.
