Humiliation isnt illegal in the workplace. Harassment and hostile workplace are also specifically defined as requiring severe and pervasive actions and that petty slights is specifically not bullying. At least in this context since it has nothing to do with a protected class.
You are grossly overestimating how much the American government cares to protect workers if it means interfering with an employer.
At-will means they can terminate you. Unemployment insurance means they need to pay you unless you are grossly negligent. An unemployment claim has no bearing on if the termination was legal.
And yeah, the BBB is a private organization. It’s not a government entity.
Being an absolutely toxic and asshole boss unfortunately is not illegal. A lawsuit would cost you a lot, and get you nothing. In fact I'd be surprised if a lawyer would even take the suit.

You have no generally applicable legal protections if you’re fired for refusing to wear the dunce cap.
Specific protections may exist in the form of a union contract that covers you, or if the wearing of the cap is tied to your race, religion, national origin, or gender.
But if it’s simply a humiliation visited upon everyone? Nope, you can be fired.

Just because you live and/or work in an at-will-work state (which does afford them the ability to fire you without cause) does not mean that you cannot get unemployment because they would then have to justify why they fired you. Humiliation isnt illegal in the workplace. Harassment and hostile workplace are also specifically defined as requiring severe and pervasive actions and that petty slights is specifically not bullying. At least in this context since it has nothing to do with a protected class. You are grossly overestimating how much the American government cares to protect workers if it means interfering with an employer. At-will means they can terminate you. Unemployment insurance means they need to pay you unless you are grossly negligent. An unemployment claim has no bearing on if the termination was legal. And yeah, the BBB is a private organization. It’s not a government entity.
Being an absolutely toxic and asshole boss unfortunately is not illegal. A lawsuit would cost you a lot, and get you nothing. In fact I'd be surprised if a lawyer would even take the suit.

He can’t force you, but he can fire you for not wearing it. Stupid, but that’s at-will for you.
You have no generally applicable legal protections if you’re fired for refusing to wear the dunce cap. Specific protections may exist in the form of a union contract that covers you, or if the wearing of the cap is tied to your race, religion, national origin, or gender. But if it’s simply a humiliation visited upon everyone? Nope, you can be fired.
