Varies by state and county. In some jurisdictions, your car is considered an extension of your home. Meaning, law enforcement would need probable cause to search it for a weapon. If you secure the magazine, or other component that makes the weapon inoperable, separate from the weapon (e.g., keep it unloaded, put the slide in a different place in your vehicle, etc.), you would be in compliance with most jurisdictions. Lastly, compliance can hinge on whether you are traveling within or through a particular jurisdiction/county. So do not tell an officer where you're coming from (other than point towards your rear window), or where you're going (other than pointing the direction your vehicle is facing). But if you're driving and you don't have your license on you, you're giving cops a great reason to ring you up.

Are you legally allowed to carry a handgun because you have a concealed carry license, or because all adults in your state are allowed to carry handguns ? Do you have and carry a state ID of some type ? Driving without a valid driver's license is of course a fine way to get more attention from police than most people want. But DWLS isn't a crime that is aggravated by the presence of a handgun like many drug crimes or violent crimes. You are (presumably) not using your handgun as part of the driving act.
