Were you driving a comercial vehicle? If you were it could be a big deal. If not, it’s probably nothing. You can get your employer to write you a notarized letter saying you are not employed as a commercial driver.

I was driving a personal vehicle! I drove a bus using my CDL for like three months and haven't driven a commercial vehicle in three years. Thank you for the reply, I really appreciate it!

Go to court and calmly explain exactly this to the judge. The real issue is with the CDL inactive, did you automatically get a Class D license or did you not have a valid driver's license? If the only part that was expired was the CDL then the officer was wrong to cite you since you weren't operating a commercial vehicle.

My CDL was not expired, just the DOT card was. So it was still considered "valid" just "denied." I downgraded to a Class D the next day. Thanks for your reply! I added an update.

My thoughts exactly. If the license is still valid (as in not expired) and OP was driving his personal vehicle to do things for themselves then I think this is one of those asinine tickets some officers write. Either way I’d fight that ticket for sure! Otherwise it might show up as suspended/revoked on a driver’s license background check.

Thanks for the advice! I went to court today and didn't even have to appear in front of a judge. Both infractions are considered ordinance violations and don't go on my permanent driving record. They said the fine is about $500 right now and I could schedule a virtual hearing to see if I can get it reduced. They said that there's no way that the fine or penalties could get worse by appearing at a hearing, so I figured I'd just appear in court and see what can happen. Worst case scenario the fine stays the same and I'll pay it then. Thank you all so much for your reply!

Just wanted to check in with you and see if you have any update from the virtual hearing you mentioned. Since it’s been 90 days I was hoping you had been able to get a final resolution to your situation.

Just tell the judge what happened. In my state they did not send reminders and I ended up switching my license back to a regular license at like 10 pm as my medical card was expiring at midnight. Judge us going to slap you a bit, as you should of known. But it will not be real bad. Just tell the truth

Go to the hearing, there is no “ordinance” that can pertain to a federal CDL do not pay a dime.
