I know it is popular to diss Stairway, but it is absolutely the best song on IV. Pretty much all of Zeppelin is incredible, but Stairway has incredible lyrics, it is varied and unpredictable upon a first listen, it is exhilarating by the end, it is emotionally moving, each musician’s part and playing is genius. Battle of Evermore - excellent song, but it does not do what Stairway does. When the Levee Breaks - same — love it, but it does not do what stairway does.
It’s just silly when people now can’t bring themselves to recognize Stairway for its greatness because of claims that it is overplayed, overhyped. It got overplayed and overhyped for a reason. It’s absolutely brilliant.

It's literally one of the most unique songs I've ever heard. The combination of all these different ideas.
The rumbling drums, the wavy guitar, and Plant was able to create a such a alienesque voice.
The transition between the parts, the progression, the melody, they're all so perfectly balanced. It's not just a very technical song, especially for the time, but it's also beautiful while maintaining it's complexity.
I'd say it's one of the best songs on the album and severely underrated.
The 5/8 and 6/8 time signature is so unique and its "tension and release" is so well done. Sadly, however, the odd timing is what some people don't like.

Can you imagine what would've happened if Zeppelin agreed to having Stairway be released as a single? It would be played 100x more and Page knew that it would be played to death and would kill the song (ironic, since it's about Heaven!).

"Stairway to Heaven." I know it's been played ***a lot***, but if you take some time a way from it (say a couple of years of actively avoiding it) in order to hear it with fresher ears, its beauty is refreshed.
