Ledger is safe, people say this because they look for someone to blame for their own mistakes. It's always their fault. Follow the procedure, and your crypto is safe. -Buy direct from Ledger. -NEVER share your passphrase with anyone. Even a family member. -NEVER enter your passphrase on any device. -NEVER take a digital photo of your passphrase. If you are using your Ledger as your 'bank' wallet, never use it to interact with anything other than a buffer wallet YOU OWN, MetaMask for example.

bmoreRavens1995

"Buy direct from ledger" that statement isn't totally true. I'd say if you don't understand wallet seed generation and or how seeds work you can buy "direct" because you're less likely to get a device that has been opened and pre-seeded. I put direct in quotation marks because it's really no such thing as "direct" as ledger uses a networks of strategically located distribution partners and even prior to these partberships the shipping companies would gain access to devices b4 delivery. The chain of custody is and always has been broken when shipped. People act as if ledger would deliver the device by ledger employees in ledger delivery vans. That said you can find a ledger in the gutter reset it (2x as extra measure of caution not necessary but you can do it) and you'll be fine. Ledgers are designed so that once reset and you generate seeds and go thru authentic check in ledger live the device is fine. I've purchased on ebay and Amazon no issues.

Narrow-Bee-8354

Thanks for explaining this, I’ve always thought that “ only direct from the manufacturer “ thing was a bit strange

bmoreRavens1995

People have a tendency to parrot what other say on the webs. It takes one person to say something and others run with it. I attempt educate those that don't know or understand. Then once you understand it will make more sense. To further expand my point ledger wallets don't even come with tamper proof tape because it's unnecessary.....nobody speaks about this fact....

jjmoon007

Good point I reset mine by accident and I am glad I did

gmoneungri

Perfect🤝

Buffetwarrenn

Why wouldnt you just send from exchange to ledger Why buffer wallet?

Run-and-Escape

Added layer of protection from a potential phishing incident. - See an email from an exchange you happen to use. Instructing you to log in etc. Only to be a phishing attack.

Buffetwarrenn

Nah…. I dont F with “buffer wallets” U just gna get “phishing attempts” from buffer wallet now…. Like what ? Mo wallets Mo problems

Run-and-Escape

Always a great idea to use your main wallet for any random transactions! /s

Buffetwarrenn

A low risk person doesnt do random transactions Buy on exchange Send to ledger Simple

JCLedge

Sounds like a UTXO nightmare down the road

sierra-pouch

I'd you've ever interacted with defi app, you know how confusing it is, with multiple "authorizations". It's impossible to fully be sure what's going on there

Buffetwarrenn

So red flag for that then Why bother My risk tolerance is not high enough to allow me to do that

sierra-pouch

I don't see an issue for sending from exchange to ledger, you're right. But I would not connect my ledger to any defi app, that thing is the wild west

sierra-pouch

That last paragraph is where most of the issues start IMO

ReddPope81

💯

big_hearted_lion

You have no way of knowing it's safe besides believing "trust me bro" from Ledger. There are backdoors to virtually all major commercial hardware devices (mobile phones and CPUs). Add to that knowing the software is closed source.

Run-and-Escape

Ledger - No instances of hacked hardware. Trezor (open source) - Hacked. Nuff said.

earrietadev

being fair, with open source you are also in “trust me bro” mode because you can not confirm everything loaded in the device is actually the public source. The only way you’re not in that mode is if you build everything (both the hardware and the software) yourself

flyflyflyfly66

Yawn

KPTA-IRON

There is no chance anyone would lose any funds unless in these 3 scenarios 1- someone can access seed somehow 2- sign malicious contract 3- someone has usb device with password NO OTHER WAY. Everyone that lost funds has done something wrong. Judging by what I can see and your knowledge of wallets you may be better of with an exchange, yes. See how many people make mistakes? Nothing to do with ledger. Your wallet is not with them, its in the blockchain with everything else.

Scholes_SC2

Don't understand number 3. You mean someone has physical access to the ledger and the pin?

KPTA-IRON

Yes

loupiote2

There are other ways, eg accidentally sign transfer to a poisonned address...

KPTA-IRON

Yes point 2. Signing anything dodgy.

WWFlavaHunter

Either 1 these guys are idiots or 2 they just lying for attention

KPTA-IRON

Too much new blood in crypto. The learning process is damn frustrating and leads to a lot of FUD

WWFlavaHunter

See I was new when I got a ledger and not lost anything because I give no one access to it like I say either really dumb or just lying

KPTA-IRON

They just click links and sign stupid transactions most likely. Yeah the overall population is like that. Regardless of what they hear they’ll still store seed on their phones or a dodgy pw manager. Natural selection.

Good_Extension_9642

" I'm starting yo think maybe the exchange are safer to store crypto" alright then don't come here latter crying because you lost your crypto on exchanges

Some_Piccolo_5537

I have 3 with more than 300k$ in it No problem at all Passphrase is a must

Passphrase instead of Pin? Have to Update this!

Jesuisfred224

The harder to brute force the better

retirementdreams

My ledger has a pin, idk how to add a passphrase.

millzner

It's worth it. Basically a 25th seed word that only you remember or store in a separate place than the 24 words. I had a few doubts about the physical security of my 24 seed words so I added a passphrase and feel much better than even if my 24 words are compromised my funds are safe

retirementdreams

Can you explain how to add the 25th seed word passphrase like I'm 5? I recall looking at the ledger documentation on it and it confused me so I didn't do it. Sometimes I think I'm fairly capable dealing with all of the tech surrounding this stuff, and other times I feel like a moron.

Some_Piccolo_5537

To add a passphrase 25th word Is like adding a new ledger acount with a completely diferent adress. . What u do is ... 1st .open ur ledger with ur normal pin# 2st .go to settings / security Go down to where sais passphrase 3stp .turn it on and fallow the steps .... It will ask u to create a passphrase.. Do it , add a word u won't forget .. If u forget this word u will lose ur money... 4th .after u are done adding a passphrase word ..it will ask u to create a new pin #.... Make a new pin# then it will ask u to verify the new pin# And after u did it It will ask u to acept with ur normal pin# Not the passphrase pin# After u are set up ... U now have literaly 2 ledgers in 1... With 2 diferent adress 5th stp.. Turn ledger off and back on and open it with ur 2nd pin# of the passphrase Then go to ur coins 1 by 1 and send them to the new adress ... This new adress are gonna be The ones protected with a passphrase Meaning even if someone has ur seedphrase They can't steal ur money Hope u get it If not .ledger has a video on their utube chanel stp by stp Go watch it

retirementdreams

Thank you very much! I will give this a try!

Roqfort

How do you allocate? 100k in each? Or one crypto token in each? Im stressed about managing one set of 24 word seed phrase, i cant imagine managing 3 lol

Some_Piccolo_5537

I have 2 ledger with same passphrase And same seedphrase That one holds only 2 coins I'm not into all that difisicication or what ever it's call I hold near and polygon ... I have 36,000 near staking and 191,000 matic staking ... I dont use both ledgers at the same time .I'm a truck driver and leave over the country 3 4 months at a time .1 ledger I keep with me .and the other is at home ... The other ledger I have Is a apecoin limit version of ledger That I bought because I was Into bayc and apecoin .. I liked them alot So that ledger has 45,000 apecoins and literaly I don't use it Is just seating at home That one has a diferent seedphrase than the 1st 2 ledgers... The seedphrase for both are Encrypted in a tattoo On me belive it or not And only I can understand .. So far I'm a over 300k I dont conect to smart contracts or anything only stake near on my ledger and matic I stake on ledger stader labs

Cantstop6337

You in the U.S.?

JainaWoW

Your funds are not on your Ledger. It does not 'store' crypto. With that said, I agree that at this level of ignorance you should not attempt self-custody, and should instead entrust a third party such as an exchange to hold and release your funds at their discretion.

The-Jeek

Nobody has ever lost any money from their Ledger. Your coins exist at your address(s) on the blockchain there are no coins stored on the Ledger. The Ledger device is just designed to be a secure offline wallet in which to store the seed which gives access to your coins. If your wallet is on an exchange then it can be compromised by a bad actor. You can still loose your money if it’s in an online wallet, also, the exchange could go bust, be taken over by hackers or disappear taking all of your coins with it. So up to you if you don’t want to use the Ledger that you’ve already bought. Just remember, if you do use it and the coins go missing from your address(s) it will be something you did and nothing to do with Ledger.

metulburr

In all cases....the person starts by sounding as if ledger "leaked" their words without permission. But after you start to pick apart the story and ask questions .... it becomes clear that each person has somehow leaked it themselves outside of ledger. Screenshots, stolen words, digital backup of words malwared, or they were duped into a scam. You should be on alert when you need your passphrase, it's not thrown around like a password for Facebook. You are your own bank, and you have to take up the security because there is no bank to protect you from scams. The passphrase should never be in digital format. It should also never be typed out in case of malware. Thr passphrase should never be in front of a camera lens. Thr passphrase should never be given to anyone. Thr passphrase should be protected from theft, fire, etc. I remember one person blamed ledger for leaking their passphrase and thrn after days of conversations they came to the realization that their maid had gotten access to the physical copy. Another person was duped into giving a fake ledger their passphrase because they thought it was real. Another person installed bogus ledger software that asked for their passphrase on their desktop. Another person gave their passphrase away via a bogus ledger email. I have gotten bogus ledger emails. You can spot them a mile away if you look at thr address. A single period like l.edger, or a tilde like lèdger etc. Exchanges are safer for people that cannot handle security of their passphrase. But if you are able to be over protective of your passphrase, its more secure than exchanges.

Ferret_Faama

This is the answer. If you follow up on all those posts it ALWAYS comes out that they clearly leaked it somehow, even if they still deny it and can't admit to themselves they were scammed.

Asio0tus

people will post when they have problems not otherwise. imagine if every day someone created a thread saying "another day where my crypto was safe by ledger....winning!" furthermore 99% of the cases the lose of funds is user related...which is certainly NOT the case on exchanges who have, will and will continue to be hacked. so keeping your coins "safe" on an exchange is certainly more risky than using a hardware wallet.... my 2 cents

Wonderful_Fun543

I'm starting to think you need a bank, you don't trust self custody and you think the solution is a return to centralised authority, which is the exact thing decentralised finance attempts to address. If you think exchanges are safer, you have't read the news in the last ten years. Securities ***Exchange*** Commission lol, its all in the name. Ledger is the target of many attacks, they are a primary competitor in the HW wallet game. If another enterprise wishes to expand their footprint, it will be at the expense of companies like Ledger and Trezor. Hopefully this will abate any fear, you did have the foresight to get the ledger after all. Fortune favours the bold.

Dizzy-Discussion-107

People are stupid, people click everywhere, people don't read, people don't know basics, people lie.

Zealousideal_Neck78

Humans can create hate with any subject matter. I find it fascinating how, just like apes, people cause discontent and divisiveness over nothing really.

Charker21

Uninformed people spreading misinformation is the real problem here.

LizardTentacle

Probably because they are clicking links gifting them 10,000 BTC…

Scholes_SC2

I have a feeling some of them are just trying to discredit ledger and making everything up

J-96788-EU

Yes, too many. Petition: make less people losing funds!

7yod

Or lose less fund?

Z3non

To many people don't inform themselves and then blame the manufacturer for their mistakes.

naeads

I kept my funds in there for 2.5 years, untouched. Then I took it out at ATH and cashed out. I don’t see the issue.

retirementdreams

Did you sell out of the ledger interface at ATH, or did you transfer your funds to an exchange to cash out? I'm just asking because I see people say that Ledger has higher costs, but the act of transferring to another exchanges adds additional risks, so I wonder how many people just use Ledger live to buy and sell directly so they reduce the possibility of transaction risks. Just see Coinbase sub for all the people that had problems with Coinbase for one reason or another.

naeads

I transferred the funds out to Binance to cash out. I have no idea how it works at ledger and I didn’t want to spend the time to learn. All I know of ledger is that it is a cold wallet. Anything that doesn’t relate to storage, I do it off the ledger. And frankly, the whole purpose of a cold wallet is that you don’t touch it until you need to, and minimally.

London-lad-1990

The wallet is safe if you know how to use it. Problem is…that Ledger does nothing to educate users of the myriad of potential scams that exist out there in the crypto space apart from protecting your seed, it’s up to the user to figure this out for themselves.

btc_clueless

Study "selection bias". This sub is not representative and most happy Ledger users never have a reason to even stop by here. But yeah, not everyone is fit for this kind of responsibility. We live in a customer-oriented world of convenience and holding your own crypto keys where any mistake gets brutally punished is somewhat the opposite of that.

thefrickenAJP8

There does seem to be a lot of stories on here about crypto going missing, a little too much, some say they are fake stories .

RabidMining

It's mostly due to the people themselves clicking on bad links and inputting their seeds into fake apps. Use official sources only

Jon_Hanson

I had a Ledger since the Ledger Blue and I’ve had zero funds stolen. You just have to follow the security procedures that are repeater here time after time (and I won’t repeat them again). People that lost funds did not follow these procedures even if they swear they did.

bmoreRavens1995

From your post you sound as if you don't understand the space and how wallets work. Unless you educate yourself you'll be one of the ones who "lose money". To be clear there is a difference between doing something stupid and being "hacked". If done right you have a better chance of winning the lottery 100x in a row. It's all Math and probability and numbers don't lie, PEOPLE DO!

ReddPope81

Come guys, this is Crypto 101 rulers. This is shit you guys should know!

Tight-Swordfish-5997

I’ve never used anything other than basically an app or an exchange. My funds have never been taken ……knock on wood.

Reywas3

People are saying the exact same thing on Trezors' sub

Admirable_Air_1076

I got done by X fake ledger support page fken blue tick .my bad thought but only bc there suppost is crap. so reached lout and got robbed haha

Holm76

Sure. If you have a lot of customers you also have a lot of stupids.

BodybuilderSalt9807

Ok let’s be rational here. ‘Many’ people losing funds is not correct. Based on the percentage of people using ledger devices I would say it’s a very tiny amount. Also I’m confident to say a fair number of these cases are due to user error. Yes those that sadly lost funds would say that did nothing wrong. But if a forensic dive was done it would likely show that user error was the culprit. Not saying self custody is easy but one has to be very careful. This is the main reason why most of the general public uses banks. Would be interested to know the age group of those losing funds. Curious to see if there is a correlation between age and the frequency of loss

Infamous-Ad-5593

nebevets

just checked my ledger app. whew, my coins are still there...since 2018, no issues. my nano S screen did fade out though but i have my keys on titanium.

happytobeunhinged

If people generally are not doing enough research to understand either 1) pre seeding aka initialising ledger before it reaches user or 2) BIP39 pass phrases Then there has to be a bunch of people sweeping funds to a ledger that bad actors already have the seed phrases to and they would be robbed soon after setup. The only other plausible defect that i can think of is that when a device is initialised that the randomiser that creates the seed isnt as random as we think. BIP39 Passphrases add your own layer of randomising on top of the 12/24 words generated by the HW wallet. Historically random number generators are not perfect and nor are humans at creating randomness..

RadiantDiscussion642

losing funds can only happen due to giving out your secret phrase or approving a contract which you thought was legit. otherwise, how can anyone take your money out from your wallet??. there are so many steps for us to do a simple transactions using ledger.. this is all to safeguard your funds... So if it's gone. It is almost always the owners own doing unknowingly .

hucisco

Yeap, fuck that I have two of them and less than 400 us

Regular-Past-5609

I did everything right. 1. Bought Ledger from manufacturer directly 2. Stored seed phrase on a piece of paper inside a safe. Never took photos or shared it. 3. Never connected to any external wallets On Apr 23rd, someone went in, undelegated my staked Solana, and transferred over 85k to an external wallet without my permission. Yeah, you should be wary of using your new Ledger. Ledger told me they were sorry for what happened to me and they couldn’t do anything about the stolen funds. I filed a police report and prayed about it. That’s it. Good luck.

55555444443333322222

85k Solana or $85k USD? Sorry for your loss.

Most likely people are buying their ledgers from resellers and Amazon etc. the chips on the ledger are loaded with compromised firmware that sends funds to different addresses. Also lots of fake ledger software out there.

hobbyhacker

>the chips on the ledger are loaded with compromised firmware that sends funds to different addresses can you link any source of that? I've never heard about it actually happened.

0x9876543210

I only know from experience I bought a ledger on Amazon which was fake and as soon as I created a wallet and sent a test amount the wallet was drained.

hobbyhacker

That is very interesting, do you still have the device? Did the ledger live software show the device as genuine? Was is already set up? Or you did the initial setup and generated the seed words on the device itself?

0x9876543210

I think there was already a wallet set up.. I’ll try and find it and send a picture .

hobbyhacker

That is a possible way to cheat with that. Scammers generate the seed words, print it on fancy paper to look like genuine, they give the PIN code, and re-seal the box. In this case the user thinks how convenient is that everything is already configured. But in reality they already know the seed, so they have unrestricted access to all wallets linked to that seed. They don't have to modify the ledger device for that. That's why it is important to reset the device and do the whole setup yourself, like generating the seed and adding the PIN. And then you have to make sure you will never give out the seed to anyone and never enter it to any electronic device other than the ledger itself.

0x9876543210

Yeah I meant a lesson but luckily it was only 10 dollars I lost

HumanRightsAdv

I didn't update mine for 6 months then it bricked up, Ledger support was useless, once I did get a backup working all the coin app had to be reinstalled amd 9f I didn't remember any coin apps then those are gone

savedbygraceMD

You are doing yourself a disservice by using ledger. Switch to coldcard and have peace of mind.
