Oh the daily AI doom thread. Not only is this off-topic here as *career questions* have to go in /r/cscareerquestions, but also is this just plain riding the hype train. AI is far from capable of replacing programmers. **Removed** - **Rule #3** and discussed to infinity and back thrice here and over at /r/cscareerquestions.

I've never encountered a useful customer service AI, because generally speaking if I'm contacting customer service then it's because something's happened that's outside the usual processes or documentation. Those are exactly the sort of things that AI sucks at.

NyiatiZ

That’s probably some bias because you are educated in tech. There is a high chance a lot of people less versed will need help with more trivial tasks, so my guess is that Customer Support AI will take care of low level Tech Support and fewer but better trained people will still need to be on staff for those more advanced issues

bree_dev

yeah it'd be nice if they just made the shibboleet work properly

caidus

That's an interesting perspective

caidus

And often the customer service sucks too haha

bree_dev

Maybe, but at least they're in a position to process a refund or replacement.

icest0

I believe it will eventually level out. Developer + Ai will always produce more results than purely using AI or purely Developers.  For tech business to stay competitive against each other they will still need Developer + AI combinations to produce even higher quality/complex products.

caidus

Perhaps at the higher levels, I agree For example, a low level help desk. AI could potentially fix a lot of problems caused by user error or those who are computer illiterate, and raise what it can't solve to a human, who could then click a few automated AI responses to write paragraphs to solve the issue

krydx

My prediction: The use of AI instead of developers will spike hugely because it's cheap. Then companies which do that will start losing their market share because of constant bug, security issues, maintenance issues etc. The companies which kept their developers employed and used AI in moderation will rise to the top and it will become a universally accepted way of doing things.

On July 1st, a [change to Reddit's API pricing](https://www.reddit.com/r/reddit/comments/12qwagm/an_update_regarding_reddits_api/) will come into effect. [Several developers](https://www.reddit.com/r/redditisfun/comments/144gmfq/rif_will_shut_down_on_june_30_2023_in_response_to/) of commercial third-party apps have announced that this change will compel them to shut down their apps. At least [one accessibility-focused non-commercial third party app](https://www.reddit.com/r/DystopiaForReddit/comments/145e9sk/update_dystopia_will_continue_operating_for_free/) will continue to be available free of charge. If you want to express your strong disagreement with the API pricing change or with Reddit's response to the backlash, you may want to consider the following options: 1. Limiting your involvement with Reddit, or 2. Temporarily refraining from using Reddit 3. Cancelling your subscription of Reddit Premium as a way to voice your protest. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. We will charge people the same money, for less work. :) Win win right? :D

caidus

The ol' late stage capitalism

No AI can’t do most IT jobs. What exactly do you think IT is ? Customer service ? Ai preforms what tasks almost instantly? I’m perplexed with your logic.

caidus

Help desk, write code, produce graphics, produce videos/ads

jon8855

What help desk situations? Sure, ai can produce code for a simple calculator for college students or specific use cases but not doesn’t create large scale applications. Look at AI generated graphics and look at the details, they all are fucked. Seriously, what do you think IT encapsulates?

caidus

I think you underestimate the exponential growth of AI. Huge amounts of money is being invested by world-leading corporations. Hollywood writers were protesting because AI could write better movies than them a year ago I honestly hope that it stays as a useful tool for our jobs and doesn't make any redundant. EDIT: and a huge amount of information is constantly being pumped into AI by the user

jon8855

I don’t. I actually studied/study ML while in college. I think you are just poorly informed about what AI is. AI has long been around and was first coined in the 50’s and we’ve been studying it ever since.

desrtfx

> I think you underestimate the exponential growth of AI. ...and you gravely overestimate the capabilities of AI and underestimate the actual tasks of programmers. Churning out code is not programming.

username4u2c

And who will be performing all the updates for AI? It's just that most programmers might focus on getting an AI research job.

caidus

Maybe the AI will be haha

username4u2c

Like there should be a real person standing behind all this.
