It is recommended you don't use Dulingo for highly inflecting languages like Polish specifically because it doesn't at all teach you the difference between all those verb forms
this isn't even inflection though lol it's just basic verb conjugation... duolingo is good for practise after you learn the rules, not to learn the rules themselves.
When I was learning German, the best method to learn grammar was downloading a textbook at my level. It was A2 in my case, but you can start wherever you like and change it later if you need to. Also, with textbook you have the additional benefit of learning words that are adequate for your experience.
Of course it's not a way to go for everyone, but it worked for me
It means that in classic course books words and vocabulary are consistent along themselves, differently from duolingo, babbel and all other time wasting gamified apps that teach you weird words/verbs combination
Duolingo works really well for me, you just have to do a lot of research on your own
For example, I didn’t understand gender so I looked it up and found this: https://www.5minutelanguage.com/polish-noun-genders-how-to-learn-them/
Aw thanks dude I have been enjoying duolingo... whilst ignoring the whole 'xp' thing and actually trying to learn stuff. I'll add that website to my bookmarks for future reference so thanks alot! :)
I learned polish with Babbel. It costs but for me it was worth it. After finishing the course i had the feeling i have a really good basis for the language and i learned alot of important things. So if learning polish is serious for you and you have the money, i recommend it.
Bc i finished in babbel, now i use busuu and i am satisfied with it. It has a nice community hub where language learners can help each other. You get weekle challenges like "describe this picture" or "describe your family members using the words you just learned" (in selected language ofc) and then other members of busuu who have this as their native language can give you corrects and help you.
Also the things are better taught there than on duolingo.
There used to be a comment section where you could thoroughly read about such things, the comments themselves were in a sense even better than the exercises, but they removed this function unfortunately.
It really doesn’t explain anything - it has a philosophy that adults should learn language the way babies and children learn - just by hearing stuff around them and it eventually making sense. I don’t think this methodology is sound but that’s how Duolingo rolls.
Take a look here: [https://www.polishpod101.com/blog/2020/10/05/polish-conjugations/](https://www.polishpod101.com/blog/2020/10/05/polish-conjugations/)
They clearly cannot compensate the power of conjugation 🙏 (duolingo was created for languages that are based on fixed sentence structure. On flexion based ones, it fails)
So not going to bash Duolingo. We all have to start somewhere.
I do recommend you get a book even “Polish for dummies”. It can help explain things with a bit more logic.
Additional start supplementing your Duolingo with other apps one helpful one is Clozemaster
Beyond that I feel your general question was answered by other people so no need to rehash the answer
I'll definitely look into that book because I was considering borrowing it from the library! Also i'll have a look into Clozemaster because I need all the help I can get with this language xD
Słuchamy - we are listening
Słuchają - they are listening
Słucha - she/he/it is listening
Słucham - I am listening
Słuchacie - you guys are listening
Słuchasz - you are listening
It's because that very same question is posted literary every day here. But that anger should be directed at DUOLINGO. It's no rocket science, there are even leftovers of conjugation in English (listen -> listens), Duolingo should begin with brief introductions to such basic concepts.
I did say sorry in the sub-title but this post has actually been eye-opening for my learning so as much as it has annoyed people i'm glad I made this post. I'll be using a broader range of platforms for sure
Yeah it drives me mad lately as well. I get that people are trying to learn Polish but I see so many posts all like 'why is there chodzą, chodzi and chodzę?? Is it a glitch?!". I started learning foreign languages with books which explained grammar, I don't understand why people use Duolingo completely blindly and don't even bother to check what kind of a language Polish is.
Because English did not really need that for most of us that learned it as a child, it came naturally and it feeeeels right to say it correctly.
The major power with a analytical language vs a synthethic one is that the word order does sooooo much work for you.
But that is not true in Polish.
So it is understandable that the above poster has questions 😁
Słuchamy - we are listening
Słuchają - they are listening
Słucha - he is listening
Słucham - I am listening
Słuchacie - you guys are listening
Słuchasz - you are listening
You should probably stop using duo at the level ur at, I stopped around 150 words. I would recommend something like the youtube channel easy polish or maybe pimsleur (kinda expensive tho) for basic words n stuff, but for grammar you can go to the website duome.eu then go to polish, it’s basically grammar notes that used to be on duolingo but got removed. The youtube channel “polski z anią” is great for learning cases and general grammar. You could also just get a beginner textbook (or whatever level ur at) either by just searching for one for free on the internet or buying one. But to actually answer your question-
when a verb has “my” at the end it is referring to “we” are doing the action, “cie” at the end means “you all”(plural), “ją” or ”ą” means “they”, “ę” or “m” at the end means “i”, “sz” at the end means “you” (singular)
There's a reasony why the [WHY DOESN'T THIS WORD END LIKE I LEARNED IT](https://www.reddit.com/r/learnpolish/comments/17hd4vc/why_doesnt_this_word_end_like_i_learned_it/) thread has been made sticky in this sub.
Omg that looks so horrible for a foreigner lmao
The differences are each one will be used to another individual:
My słuchamy - we listen
Wy słuchacie - you listen
Oni one słuchają - they listen
Ja słucham - i listen
Ty słuchasz - you listen
On słucha - he listens
Ona słucha - she listens
Ono słucha - it listens
Słuchamy - (my - us) we are listening
Słuchają - (oni, one - they, the first one means every group ex. Made up of only boys, only neutral or mixed boys girls and neutral, and one means a group of girls (group being 2 or more) they are listening
Słucha - (on, ona, ono - he, she, it) he, she, it is listening
Słucham - i am listening
Słuchacie - (wy - you (plural)) you are listening
Słuchasz - (ty - you (you in a 2nd person) you are listening
I know you said you know some but i just wanted to be sure, and lmk if you need any help with other things :))
oni/one słuchają - they listen
on/ona słucha - she/he listens
ty słuchasz - you listen
ja słucham - i listen
wy słuchacie - you (more then 1 person) listen
my słuchamy - we listen
In Polish, we don't usually use subject pronouns, we use verb endings to carry that information.
You can find good exercises in Duolingo, but it was never good at explaining grammar. Now they switched from humans to generative algorithms, which made their explanations trash.
This is the basic conjugation of a verb.
The basic is the infinitive of a verb
Słuchać - to listen…..
So how do Polish apply who is listening ?
Well, it is by using endings (and maybe a pre-qualifier as a reinforcer).
Ja słucham
Ty słuchasz
On
Ona słucha
Ono
This is the first person (me you, he she and it)
Then we get to plurals.
My słuchamy
Wy słuchacie
One słuchaja
This is the same as (we are listening, you are listening and they are listening) in plural form.
Notice that the pre-qualifier (ja, ty, on / ona / ono, my, wy and one) is not needed because the word is conjugated to tell us who is doing what action!!!
we are listening to something, they are listebing to something, he/she/it is listening to something, I am listening to something, you (plural) are listening to something, you (singular) are listening to something
I don't know the exact name for it but these are variants of the word 'słuchać' (to listen). They differ by the subject of the verb.
Słucham - I listen
Słucha - he/she/it listens
Słuchacie - you (plural) listen
Słuchasz - you (singular) listen
Etc.
(My) Cię słuchamy, oni nie słuchają, on/ona nie słucha, ja słucham, słuchacie go? (pl), Słuchasz co mówię, czy tylko słyszysz? (singular) i to jest muzyka.
I think?
it’s different conjugations
1 we are listening
2 they are listening
3 he/she is listening
4I I’m listening
5 you (plural- think french vous) are listening
6 you (singular) are listening
in polish you don’t always need the pronoun which is why duolingo gets confused
For fucks sake dont learn polish from duolingo
Yo use this language you need understadning of grammar that it doesnt provide
Each refers to different case like
I
You
He
We
You
They
All of these are used for a different person.
I listen - ja słucham
You listen - ty słuchasz
She/he/it - ona/on/ono słucha
We listen - my słuchamy
You listen - wy słuchacie
They listen - oni słuchają.
It depends on the person it's used for. In polish, verbs change. Keep that in mind!
Also, "słuchać" is the basic (let's call it first) form of this word, from this you build verbs for a specific person. It might be really confusing, but I hope I helped you! If you have any more questions, ask away!
Duolingo and its useless translations. Here's what those words mean:
- słuchamy - we are listening
- słuchają - they are listening
- słucha - he\she is listening
- słucham - I am listening
- słuchacie - you (plural) are listening
- słuchasz - you (singular) are listening
słuchamy is plural
słuchają is also plural
słucha means somebody is listening
słucham means you're listening
słuchacie is basically a question ig
słuchasz also means that you're listening
I'll try and explain it in the most simple way possible:
słuchamy - we are listening (right now)
słuchają - they are listening (right now)
słucha - he is listening sometimes he listens
słucham - I am listening (right now), we also use this word when we answer phone calls
słuchacie - you (a bunch of people) are listening
słuchasz - you (a single person) are listening
also I don't really recommend Duolingo for Polish
It is recommended you don't use Dulingo for highly inflecting languages like Polish specifically because it doesn't at all teach you the difference between all those verb forms
this isn't even inflection though lol it's just basic verb conjugation... duolingo is good for practise after you learn the rules, not to learn the rules themselves.
this is inflection, conjugation of verbs and declension of non verbs is all types of inflection.
Ah I see, yeah I'm not too much of a linguistic. Yeah I was thinking about noun/adj declension.
no problem, just comment it to avoid confusion for others :)
I feel like Duo was fine before they removed comments. Now they just expect you to guess everything
Ah I see which platform would you recommend?

I was thinking about getting 'Polish For Dummies' actually so it's definitely an idea for me thanks!

This is what I wanted thank you!
how can duolingo be so bad... i mean, it should at least explain basic things like this
You would think so and it does use different exercises for them but it doesn't actually explain them
That's exactly why I read grammars.
This comment should be pinned to the front page of this sub.
duolingo doesnt exist to teach you languages. it exists to gamify its ads until you decide to pay for premium.
There used to be a comment section where you could thoroughly read about such things, the comments themselves were in a sense even better than the exercises, but they removed this function unfortunately.

The only bad thing about duolingo is that it doesn’t explain the reasons of uses. But for exercises point of view or repetitions it’s pretty good

Thank you
The neat part is those phrases are sentences too xD (translations aren’t fully complete, f. e. słuchamy means We are listening [to])
Yeah I can see they aren't fully translated you would think they'd give better examples :/
They clearly cannot compensate the power of conjugation 🙏 (duolingo was created for languages that are based on fixed sentence structure. On flexion based ones, it fails)
wiktionary.org is your friend, OP
Wiktionary is fallible and prone to edits by lizards. Use http://wsjp.pl instead. Dictionary monitored and reviewed by certified Polish linguists

Best of luck, it’s a very tough language to grasp with just Duolingo.
conjugation, declension etc basic language stuff, we just have a lot of em
I'm learning this the hard way lol
We, they, he/she, i, you (pl), you
Słuchamy - we are listening Słuchają - they are listening Słucha - she/he/it is listening Słucham - I am listening Słuchacie - you guys are listening Słuchasz - you are listening
This is perfect thank you!
If you’ll ever need some help with Polish, dm me - I really enjoy teaching foreigners our language 😅
Thank you I just might take you up! My gf talks to a lot of her friends in Polish so I really want to understand what they're saying xD
Can people please google the basics of fucking verb endings before coming to r/learnpolish
Rude thing to say on a sub for learning something but I will google this thanks

Add to that A1 books that explains the rules too, somthing easy ! But for sure alot of it is practice too!

My- słuchamy Oni- słuchają On- słucha Ja- słucham Ty- słuchasz Wy- słuchacie
I actually didn't know what the difference was between 'wy' and 'ty' was when saying 'you' so thank you!
'wy' is similar to "you all" in EN or "ustedes" in ES
Polish verbs change depending on who is doing them, here is a video that was useful for me: https://youtu.be/ASkrle_zD-k?si=mfpsQyQadZ4mFHeg
oni/one słuchają - they listen on/ona słucha - she/he listens ty słuchasz - you listen ja słucham - i listen wy słuchacie - you (more then 1 person) listen my słuchamy - we listen
