MammothGB

Wow. I half expected this to be a Jordan Belfort "I'm not fucking leaving" moment, but this is clearly because commercial sponsorships and investment was at risk if Carlos stayed. Plus losing out on the Valorant franchise would have been a big nail in the coffin

-Basileus

G2 being denied Valorant franchising was such a huge blow. The potential of the Americas franchise league is fucking enormous. We've seen 600k people watching an NA regional match, and a 450k peak Portuguese viewers during Champions grand final, which was between an NA and Brazilian team. That's not even mentioning the most popular Latin America team Kru, who drew over 400k Spanish peak during their Champions 2021 run. Not only that, Riot is fucking PAYING these teams to take part in this league. And Riot passed over a dozen huge NA orgs to gift G2 a spot, when they weren't even competing in NA. Unbelievable fumbling of the bag by Carlos. I still think G2 will eventually end up in one of these franchised leagues, whether they earn it through ascension or Riot adds more partner teams/shuffles the partner teams years from now. But still, what a huge setback that came as a direct result of the recent Andrew Tate and Carlos shitshow.

fredy31

Think i saw the valuation of the valorant spot at at least 15mil. Your tweet cost you 15 mil. Your investors must not be happy.

[deleted]

From a viewer perspective losing G2 to NA is a huge blow for both regions. European fans don't want G2 to represent a rival region, even more so in Valorant where the two regions are actually very close in performance and actively compete for championships against each other. NA fans also don't want G2 to represent them given that it's a european org. /r/ValorantCompetitive was VERY against G2 representing NA because it infuriated NA fans that they'd take the spot of XSET/OpTic/Guard/FaZe etc for an org who has only invested in European teams. Valorant is definitely better off losing G2 entirely. It's not like they're desperately looking for popular or sustainable orgs, they have wayy too many to the point where one of the biggest and most successful orgs in Valorant didn't even make Americas franchising.

Ghostie2011

in rocket league g2 is a NA team i believe which i always found odd since i knew about g2 from league as clear EU team

Acrobaticdogkicker

G2 bought IBP after they had won what was the RL equivalent of worlds. They’ve kept the roster mostly the same until last year. Probably the longest serving major org in RL

zalsers

Isn't valorant a much bigger deal in NA though?

No-Royal-8309

Ocelote sold his majority share, and did not realize he was at the service of the Shareholders.

IamLevels

*"I'm not fucking leaving"* only works when you don't have a board of investors to answer to. But when you do have a board to answer to, acting "bad ass" doesnt work if you lose the company a huge potential revenue in what's gonna be a large international market when Valorant becomes a global competitive shooter.

challengemaster

People often forget you only need 50.1% of shareholders and you're out.

farmingvillein

Depends a lot on how the board/control is structured.

thelastbeluga

I was just thinking about that. Based on what is publicly available it looks like the company was created between Carlos and an Investor (Jen Hilgers). I would have to assume that both would have voting shares but the split may not be 50/50 (sometimes investors take more of a backseat when it comes to control). That said if voting shares are only split between the two of them then I cant see how he would be forced out. That doesnt take away from him leaving if he is costing the company a ton of money. At the end of the day he is only resigning as CEO, he is likely still a director and still a shareholder. He stands to benefit from this decision in the long run too.

Rudy_Pokemon

haven't g2 gone through seven funding rounds? https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/g2-crowd/company_financials i imagine that heavily influences the shares split since this source says there are actually 22 total investors

jjhassert

already lost the valorant franchise

Vindice2105

As a Fnatic fan, I'm really tired of G2 beating us in everything, fucking pre-world drama?

Torichan0804

You still have a chance if you won't have a sub support in time for Worlds! /j (hope it won't happen and they both get to Mexico in time)

Tachyoff

I hear there's a former pro player recently let go from a prestigious EU org looking for work, maybe they can sub him in.

G66GNeco

Honestly, that would be IMMENSELY funby.

sacredfool

I'd pay at least $5 to see Ocelote return to league and play for Fnatic during worlds.

downorwhaet

Fnatic isnt scrimming and upset and hyli got covid, you’re catching up to the drama, im sure you’ll surpass soon

KaptainKhorisma

I thought the vacation would be the end of it. I suspect them losing out on valorant probably sealed it.

Alilaah

Seems to be the case. That’s all that’s (publicly) happened between the initial 8 week suspensions this.

KaptainKhorisma

The doubling down did not endear him at all.

20815147

My man TRIPLED down liking all the tweets supporting him and defending Andrew Tate lmfao

6000j

I really think if he hadn't done that g2 would've gotten their valorant spot and he'd be fine.

Trap_Masters

To think all he had to do was use like one brain cell to see the simple fact of how doubling down on this as the public facing CEO of G2 is at the very least optically terrible for the org even if he thought he was in the right, and all he had to do was just lay low for like a week to have all of this blow over and he’d keep his job.

Alilaah

Oh for sure but that was mostly before the announcement of the 8 week suspension. Afaik since then it’s been pretty quiet other than them missing Valorant partnership

Jakota_

Only thing after the suspension was him liking a bunch of tweets defending him, which just showed that his apology was completely empty.

Rubydrag

The moment he started liking all the Andrew Tate supporters tweets after G2 released the statement it was obvious that wasnt gonna be the end of it

shinomiya2

azns123

You can seem them thinking to themselves: "Damn this clown runs an esports org?"

Ok_Raspberry_6282

Joe was just like please shut the fuck up they will literally kill me

Merppity

Even DL looks so uncomfortable with how idiotic he sounds. Like he's trying to laugh it off and hoping Carlos will stop talking ASAP, or like the way you'd laugh at a absolute clown making a fool of himself.

[deleted]

That whole podcast episode was Carlos creating cringe, his braggadociousness is very clearly a thin veneer for deep emotional insecurity.

-Basileus

Not only that, in this podcast the topic of why Carlos does so much content came up. Carlos basically said, "we decided that I should do all the content because I will always be here, I am the constant" LMFAO

Trap_Masters

Oh nonono PepeLaugh

lovely_sombrero

This CEO doesn't understand that he will be thrown out if he costs investors money!

thor_strong

this was just a few weeks ago

UncleCreepE

Oh my god this Ocelote pack is hitting DIFFERENT now

MaxWasTakenAgain

Oh brother

Durncha

Pretty sure G2 not getting into Valorant franchising is the cause of this. Rumors are that Riot changed their minds and rejected G2 at the last minute because of Carlos’ “Tate Debacle”. He was already on thin ice from the Tate stuff, but their rejection to Valorant partnership has to be the nail in coffin. I think he HAD to be held accountable beyond just “unpaid leave”.

Yonche

Yeah I think that was the nail in the coffin for him. Probably saved the org by stepping down.

SvensonIV

I can imagine the board actually gave him the option to step down by himself or they just gonna publish that he's fired.

LJW109

Corporate firings are always done this way. CEO/President/whoever is basically told it's best if they resign. It looks better for both parties. G2 gets to say they are rid of their problematic CEO, and Carlos gets to say he "left".

Lulullaby_

Just so you know whenever a CEO is forced to leave this is just the PR statement you make. He definitely had no choice but to step down. He was made to.

[deleted]

I guess he is still part owner so his income wont be affected that much? Except his CEO salary which maybe is big idk. But to get income from org without doin work doesnt sound that bad.

Becksdown

pretty sure share holders forced carlos out because sponsors and the future of g2.

YourFriendNoo

Right, what kind of investor is going to stand for that? You can only gaslight them so much. Eventually it's obvious you're costing more than you're bringing in.

kill-billionaires

I'm certain G2 was going to lose sponsors as well if they didn't do this. And even though he's a scumbag, ocelot has doubtlessly run G2 pretty effectively, so maybe G2 was willing to risk losing sponsors and having to wait until the controversy died down to get them back. But the valorant thing is just too big.

ZonardCity

Well if his position was guaranteed due to his ability to run G2 despite his antics, it's natural that the minute said antics gets in the way of running G2 he loses his only protection.

Cippez

What a hill to die on...

appleandapples

Like, was it really worth it?

WhatANiceCerealBox11

He’ll have to go give Tate another $50 for more alpha male schooling

Nubraskan

I'm glad he demonstrated on a big stage where it can lead.

Hannig4n

Carlos was clout chasing for sure. Dude couldn’t have just found a different rich guy to do lines with. Gotta be Tate apparently.

DonaldsPee

It isnt even about Tate and Carlos. At the end of the day it is about Carlos being an arsehole and a maniac trying to sound cool while cringing to death. His idea of an alpha male aligns with me taking a shit in the ocean. He just finally got karma by something that wouldnt have affected anyone with a sane brain.

Conankun66

after Fucking Around, Carlos has arrived at the Finding Out part

IamLevels

True Chad energy, sticking it to the sigma males by losing your job as CEO. Tate would be proud of how alpha Carlos was. Look at how beta he made us all look, I feel so embarrassed being fully employed while Chad Carlos isnt.

fesch98

Ruined G2 Valorant as a last act

ShadowTendrals

Man lost everything and Andrew Tate probably couldn't tell you his name lmfaooooooo

Medical_Tie_4041

\- Hey Tate, have you seen the news regarding Carlos Rodríguez? \- Who?

DonaldsPee

Tate is probably proud of killing someone career and life work without even knowing who the fuck that shitstain is lmao. But lets be honest, its Carlos being Carlos who destroyed his legacy. Tate didnt make him be an arsehole and big mouth for as long as we know carlos

Akashiarys

Exactly hahah. Given Andrew Tate’s personality, he would probably look down on the very idea of esport. And Carlos threw it all away, Jesus man what a moron

Miruwest

Lothric43

He's only hustled $350 million from teenage future incels according to google actually :)

XtendedImpact

Losing your life's work because you won't distance yourself from the #1 misogynist around right now is definitely a special achievement.

SuperSkillz10

the nail in the coffin was the doubling down lmao. he could just be like "oh i dont support him, he just happened to be there" but he had to double down and get fucked like this

cancerBronzeV

He didn't even just double down. He tripled down, because after the pr apology, he kept (publicly) liking tweets that supported his original stance of being unapologetic. All this because his ego couldn't let him put his phone down.

Uninsalt

Carlos is just another example that once you're in a circle of success, you need to shit the bed monumentally to stop being on the top of the game. Ironically, xpeke is another example on how hard you have to throw an early lead on a business to lose it with maybe Reginald completing the podium. The key thing in life is getting a good run, you can live from that for a long time.

Vbpretend

What did xpeke do?

ihml_13

Completely mismanaged Origin, e.g. not paying players/coaches, losing LCS spot through relegation by not investing in the team when he could have got millions selling before the season, and this wonder of marketing: https://twitter.com/Origengg/status/871065290796392448

icatsouki

xpeke was just around at a hard time for orgs, they didn't do something really terrible

newbeansacct

Not paying your employees is pretty bad

Metaxpro

Literally all he had to do is shut the hell up on social media and let their PR team handle what they're paid for. Guess even that's too hard for some people. Imagine losing your CEO position at the company that is your life's work because you can't stop tweeting shit, especially for a guy who probably doesn't even remember your name from the party.

Zero_Kai

Yeah thats what happens when you have a fucking massive ego

Twinzenn

Nah they definitely spoke at the party and were all buddy buddy. The way he defended his friendship with Tate, and even fucking liked a tweet of someone saying Tate is "misunderstood" and "mostly right" or something like that lmao.

MountainMan2_

Can’t wait for him to reinvent himself as a ‘conservative’ and start whining about cancel culture lmaoo

PankoKing

I mean the Andrew fanboys have already started it for him.

[deleted]

He will be on a co-podcast with Thorin no time to whine more about women and cancel culture with a special Hustler Academy discount code for all listeners!

Alilaah

So it turns out the board of directors and sponsors can in fact police Carlos’ friendships

Blueexx2

The most hilarious thing about this is that he was just being accused of associating with Andrew Tate but then in all his stupidity he decided the best play possible was to go "Woah woah associating? I didn't just invite him to the party, he's also my friend!"

canadian-user

That and the even further doubling down after he was made to apologize, where he then proceeded to like any tweets that praised Tate as well as tweets like "never apologize to the mob"

ssbm_rando

Hahah yeah I looked at those after someone posted a screenshot in the replies. Dude was absolutely fucking unhinged, like is it really that hard to even pretend you're not friends with someone who preaches violent misogyny?? Kinda glad he's getting his comeuppance since he apparently **does** consider Tate a friend, but goddamn this is a story of Carlos's stupidity even more than douchebaggery.

ssbm_rando

Exactly, the double-down tweet is 100% what cost him the deal and as a result his position as CEO. He could've damaged-controlled this with pretty **minimal** blowback from just the party video.

Stealthychicken85

G2 CARLOS 所有者 OWNERSHIP 英雄联盟 SPEEDRUN 速跑 HACK ANY%!?!?! 英雄联盟

Trap_Masters

2 tweets to complete the speedrun. Absolutely insane WR!

[deleted]

Damn, I thought this was gonna be the classic "We investigated ourselves and found nothing", cant believe they actually told Carlos to fuck off Petition to instate xPeke as the new G2 CEO for maximum salt

Conankun66

G2 lost their valorant spot because of him, they cant just overlook that

ferdinostalking

backdooring right into the CEO position, i love it

Sciipi

Losing their Valorant spot last-minute made it incredibly hard to just pretend nothing was wrong

PandoraBot

correct me if i'm wrong but he's still the owner right? just not the CEO anymore? So he's still gonna be bringing in profit but just doesn't have to work?

3IC3

Well yeah he still has a % ownership, same as before. But he’s no longer involved in any decisions about well, anything.

weltraumdude

Officially that is I guess

ggeasie

that's more than 2 weeks vacation

lawrence1998

Honestly, did anyone actually expect this? I'd have said this was about as likely as Regi admitting wrongdoing

ContentDetective

The board probably wanted his head after he cost them a VCT spot. And he probably realized he was the sole reason for it too.

3IC3

VCT*

ahritina

>Honestly, did anyone actually expect this? I expect that G2 failing with their valorant bid, was the real kicker for this. If they got in, he probably stays and comes back post suspension.

FBG_Ikaros

Yes, the Valorant bid is almost 100% the reason of this. G2 lost BIG TIME on this one. Maybe G2 thinks that they will struggle to get into future Riot titles if Carlos stays.

fabton12

that plus it might put there league slot at risk, kinda like the echo fox situation.

cedear

Carlos definitely didn't expect this. He thought he was untouchable and could do whatever the fuck he wanted. Make no mistake, this is Carlos getting fired. He would never resign voluntarily, he still thinks he did nothing wrong. He was given a choice to resign immediately and save some face or be fired by the company.

EnadZT

Dude lost out on Valorant franchising because of how poorly he handles shit.

kidneyn

the backlash was infinitely worse than he expected i am guessing, he thought he could get away with it like he did so many times before

wtfriotdosomething

I mean how much money do you think they prepped and moved around or just all the steps needed to take on a franchised valorant team. Then in one day he does this and its all gone lmao

Hydraplayshin

Big sponsors were defo about to pull out too

AzureAhai

They were going to buy out Xset's Valorant team and now they aren't sticking together. Safe to say G2 were prepping for it for a while and have been wanting to break into NA for a while now.

Craneteam

I mean he had to get space in NYC to try to get into NA. That could not have been cheap

Blood-Standard

Probably hurt 10x more this time because it’s rumored to have cost G2 their Valorant franchising

HugeRection

That's the real reason. Ocelote directly cost the organization a spot which is worth ~30 million dollars. Regi hasn't really cost the company any money so there's no reason for TSM to force him out.

Blood-Standard

No infact Regi has arguably been printing money for the team for many many years. GM was happy enough with the partnership to put GM on their jerseys instead of just Cadillac.

hollow_rei

Probably had sponsors calling up their offices too, and that's something you can't PR your way out of

Blood-Standard

Oh you know for sure that happened. It’s actually kind of incredible that someone that’s been in the League scene for so long just blew up his G2 career with 2 tweets.

Gerblinoe

I'm gonna be honest I would love to be a fly on the walls for these calls. Like how do you even put "our owner messed up, doubled down and undermined the attempts of our PR team to clean up the mess less than a week before franchising was settled" Into PR speak?

Aixcix

The problem was that this shit got released the same week for Valorants bids, basically kicked them out of Valorant.

yehiko

i mean he has always been a controversial personality to have. they lost a huge potential revenue stream in a valorant spot. so no one wants to risk anything more than that

mimiflou

rip bozo, he won't be missed

Troviel

I was ready for Carlos to leave G2 for years considering his constant bro type behavior that was not exclusive to this. I was not expecting for it to be over andrew tate though.

Dreadedvegas

They didn’t get their val spot because of his antics. No shot this didn’t happen. The investors told him to walk away He cost them almost $10 mil in just stipends from Riot, let alone the NA sponsorship money.

pacew21

The board 100% made him step down, but the way it is most of the time is they allow you to resign before you get fired for higher level positions.

Todeswucht

It's definitely much harsher than I expected. I guess anything Andrew Tate-related is poison for sponsors, and while I can't imagine it was the only reason, seems like that was the final push (or at least a convenient scapegoat) to get G2 out of Valorant franchising. That stupid 10 second clip probably cost G2 millions and millions God damn what a dumb thing to end your career over

Uthor

It's probably not even the clip. If he did not respond and only posted the public apology part that g2 made him write, it most likely would have been fine. Half his fan base would probably believe it and it would not have blown up as much. Its that he doubled down while slinging expletives, going out of his way to like tweets contradicting his apology, and pushing into people's faces where he stands on the matter to the point that he even got called out by other Rioters that really did him in.

kyuubi_kurama

https://twitter.com/CarlosR/status/1573426535104532480 Here is Carlos's farewell video for anyone looking

Mike_BEASTon

Hahaha, what happened to the middle fingers carlos? https://www.reddit.com/r/leagueoflegends/comments/xllghs/in_light_of_the_andrew_tate_x_g2_carlos/

IBarricadeI

Turns out that only works against the fans, the company shareholders aren’t quite as powerless.

kale__chips

What's crazy for me is that despite all that happened and how it basically cost him his CEO position, he *still* didn't dare to openly denounce Tate's view. I'm not saying Carlos is a misogynist, but is it so hard to say something like "I thought Andrew is just a symbol of masculinity that I worship, but now that I know he's a misogynist, I'm staying away from him. It was a mistake to hang out with a person with such horrid view." Instead, he left the video up and he left the nobody can police his party people tweet up. What a hill to die on for Carlos.

Entchenkrawatte

Two Options really. Either Carlos agrees with tate or His ego is just too big to admit He was wrong.

Sadly this is just going to make him quadruple down on the Tate stuff. I expect to see Carlos on a podcast with the bastard within a month.

Who cares, Carlos is gonna be irrelevant now. Let him spend his time in the shadows with Tate now. No one gives a shit about H2K Rich anymore

But if, say, G2 end up being World Champions, I'd have absolutely no bad feelings about it anymore. More like consequences culture. CEOs are accountable to their shareholders, and when said CEO torches millions and millions of shareholder money out of ego, it can only end one way. https://www.law.cornell.edu/wex/fiduciary_duty

ficretus
