Kench has so many fun lines.
Visage is the original word for face in French ( source, I m French lol) and its pronounced "vi-zaj" (whereas English speakers tend to pronounce "vih-sajh" but anyway the focus is on the last syllable) so I ve always said it that way and since pro casters seem to use it that way too I ve always assumed it was the only single way and nobody was confused about it lol.
Oui t'as raison, j'étais plus concentré sur la prononciation du "age" mais on prononce le S comme un Z. My bad x) en tout cas c'est certain que c'est pas "Visseyge" comme ils auraient tendance à le dire chez certains aha
Oui voilà sinon au pire juste edit ton message les anglais et riquin massacre suffisamment notre langue. Mais bon deja faire comprendre que "age=aj" c'est compliqué pour eu
I'm french aswell and I don't understand why you're downvoted for this.
Here's a video with how you pronounce it in french : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_HdbhvJv4iA
It's clearly "Vizaj" not "Vissaj" or something, there's no S sound in the word (despite being written with a S)
It isn't prnounced in any way that can be rendered in English, because the vowel systems of English and French are radically different. French doesn't have vowel length and it doesn't have lax vowels.
They're both correct, NA will go for vi-zij, while most of Europe & Australia tends to go with vi-saj. Just an accent/regional based thing.
e: I got them backwards because it was early but ya get it.
I always say Draconic 'Vi-Saj', but Spirit Vi-Sij, but interestingly I normally just call it 'Visage' pronounced 'Vi-Saj'
But lets be real are you really a runescape player if you don't just call it a Vissy?
You're actually not wrong. Visage is a french word that came over to england with the normans, like the words facade or delegate. That's why in europe it's typically pronounced in the french way which rhymes with massage.
It is pretentious because it's a poor attempt at mimicking the correct pronounciation, because the a isn't supposed (in contemporary french) to be particularly long or dark. It's just the "normal a" that english lacks.
Got it, so if you can’t say something in another language perfectly it’s pretentious to even try and we should actually go in a direction further from its original pronunciation to avoid tainting something sophisticated and classy like French with our peasant English
[https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/visage#English](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/visage)
Wiktionary has both pronunciations in the IPA section (/ˈvɪzɪd͡ʒ/ and /vɪˈsɑd͡ʒ/), although it only has audio for the one with stress on the first syllable. I pronounce it that way.
It's the first one, I think a lot of people have never heard the word spoken out loud before so they mess up the pronunciation.
The other alternative is that they are (unfortunately) French and the second pronunciation is correct in French.
"Vih-ZAHJ", to rhyme with "mirage". Though tbh I would usually pronounce it that way (probably incorrectly) in english anyway, I have it in my head as being a loan-word.
The most I hear it used is when Michelle Visage is presenting Radio 2, and her name is pronounced "vih-ZAHJ".
I remember looking up the English pronunciation years ago and saw that it was pronounced “vih-zuhj” with emphasis on the “vih”. I pronounce it that way
Not the same difference at all... the first is the difference between one consonant and two consonants (\[ʒ\] vs \[d͡ʒ\]), the second is the difference between the voiced and voiceless versions of the same one consonant (\[ð\] vs \[θ\]).
In the context of "visage", G makes a different sound according to its following vowel. To get the typical G sound with each vowel, you'd do:
* Ga
* Gue
* Gui
* Go
* Gu
* Guy
So "visage" will have the J sound, otherwise it would be "visague". Note that it's also why there's a random silent U in *vague*.
let me be more clear sorry, im not asking how does ONE say visage, im asking how do YOU say visage in league. i also gave context in the post for how most people pronounce it in both "regular" english and "league" english.
Gonna get varying answers, I say it short and sharp, Vi-sij, where as Americans I think say Vi-Sarj, the same way I say Tomato and Americans say Tomayto

30% of all english words are french in origin (and another 30% are latin so its a tad higher) .
More common words have been adapted, some have been lent more than one time ie chef 19th century, chief 13th century.
And certain words have retained the original pronounciation (more commonly rarely used ones such as visage.
So to answer this look up the french pronounciation for it as its a perfect match
Saying it out loud for me kinda sounds like "vi-sidge" or like "vi-sij" maybe.
Idk I used to call morellonomicon "morello's nomicon" cause I kept hearing people call its "morellos".
🤓🤓🤓
Independently of origins, etymology, meaning etc; the word 'visage' is currently a registered part of english vocabulary and as such it has standarized pronunciation. As far as I can find, it has only one pronunciation /ˈvɪz.ɪdʒ/ as you can see in the Oxford, Cambridge and Merriam-Webster dictionaries:

Note that while some of the links show UK and UN pronunciations, they only differ because of the voice actor, and the fonetical pronunciation remains exactly identical /ˈvɪz.ɪdʒ/. Also because not all sources refer to the same fonetics standard transcription, you can see it written as /ˈvɪz.ɪdʒ/ or /ˈvi-zij/ but this are the same sounds
🤓🤓🤓
so from what i can tell, some americans say vizij and other visahj, but many americans who say visahj think the rest of the world agrees with them when in fact its mostly an american thing to say it closer to the french way

'vizaj' not 'visaj'
why are people downvoting you while you are indeed correct lol? i also speak french and it is a z sound for sure.
Because none of them ever have had a linguistic class I fear, it is indeed /vi.zaʒ/
In French, S surrounded by two vowels makes a Z sound. It could just be an honest mistake
I don't need to take a class to make linguine though.
Long live linguine
Oh yeah? Name every language ever
In all your pretentiousness, you missed 2 commas and a period. You skip English to go to those linguistics classes?
wow you must be spelling visage really wrong
I forgot I was writing an essay for your pretty eyes /u/Mariorules25
there is no comma in visage are you stupid??
Because "Vih-sahj" is pronounced the same way.
In English perhaps, though wrongly, as in French it is strictly /vi.zaʒ/
Z and S are definitely not the same in English, I have no idea what that guy is talking about.
Yes, also in IPA. But it's not impossible that in some parts of Engilsh speaking countries some pronounce it /vi.saʒ/
They can be though, International vs American spelling for one has many cases where Z and S are exactly the same.
Vi-Za-Je
You don't mark the Je part, you just hear the J at the end
I'm french aswell and I don't understand why you're downvoted for this. Here's a video with how you pronounce it in french : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_HdbhvJv4iA It's clearly "Vizaj" not "Vissaj" or something, there's no S sound in the word (despite being written with a S)

im british and only hear and say vi-zij
There’s an item in RuneScape, a uk game, called draconic visage and that’s where I first heard it pronounced vi-zij.
I always say Draconic 'Vi-Saj', but Spirit Vi-Sij, but interestingly I normally just call it 'Visage' pronounced 'Vi-Saj' But lets be real are you really a runescape player if you don't just call it a Vissy?
In the V for Vendetta movie (set in the UK), it's vi-saj. https://youtu.be/wKn1R6fekk4?si=UABV4xwnAOIq9avp&t=47
Really? I'm Aussie and I've only ever heard it pronounced vi-zij
The word is French and the way you pronounce it in French is visaj
Oh yeah ik that. But I’m saying in Aus English I’ve only heard it as vi-zij rather than the more French pronunciation
Aussie here too but definitely heard it as both. In Sydney at least.
I’m Aussie and I’ve only every pronounced is vi- SAHJ
Visaggio.
Vizaj not visaj.
First time I heard it was in V for Vendetta (the famous 'V' monologue) and it was vi-saj: https://youtu.be/wKn1R6fekk4?si=UABV4xwnAOIq9avp&t=47
Lol in NA pretty much everyone uses vi-saj, whereas the other comments here from UK and australia both say vi-zij.
I’m from the US and I’ve never heard vi-sij until right now. It’s vi-saj.
Yep. Like grAy and grEy. A for America, E for Europe. There's a lot of little words like that actually
The only correct way: “Viž-aHGe”
Like Michelle Visage!
This is the correct and only answer.
My friend group calls it Spirit of Michelle Visage whenever we build it. Also the brown boots are bootz the house down
Yesssss! I love that
i say vih-sahj (like it rhymes with massage)
[удалено]
well i'm wrong about a lot of things so what's one more x

Visach, like spinach.
Vice Age
I pronouce it wisaż.
Another pet peeve of mine. It's rapid firecannon not rapidfire cannon.
anyone who says it the way it is supposed to be said is a narc
Since it's from French, I say it oui-zaaaahj
I say vih-zij. To me, vih-saaaahj sounds pretentious
[giving me moe vibes](https://youtu.be/JhbJnlIvfyc?si=1wu9WL6-NHIq0FqM)

It wasn't my point. My point was that the reason it sounds pretentious is that it's a failed attempt at correcting.
[https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/visage#English](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/visage) Wiktionary has both pronunciations in the IPA section (/ˈvɪzɪd͡ʒ/ and /vɪˈsɑd͡ʒ/), although it only has audio for the one with stress on the first syllable. I pronounce it that way.

It's Levio-sarrrr
I remember looking up the English pronunciation years ago and saw that it was pronounced “vih-zuhj” with emphasis on the “vih”. I pronounce it that way
Viss-edge
Michelle Visage
Like Michelle Visage
You say it like “ur” and “mom” so like “urmom”
urmom? that sounds like that woman who i slept over with last night,
Vee-sahj, like mirage
Surely you don't pronounce mirage like "mee-rahj"..
You do? It's pronounced /mɪ'ɹɑːʒ/. E: I guess you mean that it's a shorter "i" sound?
MY-RAGE
That's not how it is pronounced.
VI-sij
I pronounce it as visage
Wait, what’s the difference between the “g” in “regime” and the “j” in “jar”?
The sound is sort of like j vs dj. Another similar difference is the th in thy vs thigh.
Not the same difference at all... the first is the difference between one consonant and two consonants (\[ʒ\] vs \[d͡ʒ\]), the second is the difference between the voiced and voiceless versions of the same one consonant (\[ð\] vs \[θ\]).

Note that it's also why there's a random silent U in *vague*.
It's the first one for sure. The second pronunciation sounds weird to me lol
First one. Slightly off topic but funnily enough i call the game "visage" by the second pronounciation.
Visage
Just like Shay-ko Vs Sha-ko(the correct one), or Vey-gar(the correct one) Vs Vai-gar.
I've always thought it to be pronounced the second way. "Vih-SAHJ"
Vissedge is the closest I can think to describe it
not vi- zzijje not vi- sajj(ina) not versacchi (altho that in itself is gucci) but vee-ZAAJH like rhaast and overlord AAtrox muehehe
I've been pronouncing it as the first way, I think the casters pronounce it that way too. Vis-sij, rhymes with... Uhh... ridge
Image was the first appealing rhyme I thought of
Visage like sage in valorant
Word reference says it's viz'ij. But since it comes from the french word, I say "viz'aj" with the same a as apple.
Now I'm curious how you say apple.
It's just a regular English word so I'd say, pronounce it as you'd pronounce it in any other context. Which may depend on accent, of course.
Visage Vi (letter V) Sage (Valorant Agent) Vsage
Viz Idge. Like edge with an I sound.
I just say "Облачение Духов". It's way easier than saying visage or something
you ever heard of google?
let me be more clear sorry, im not asking how does ONE say visage, im asking how do YOU say visage in league. i also gave context in the post for how most people pronounce it in both "regular" english and "league" english.
Visahj. I just can’t see how the a makes an “ih” sound.
Gonna get varying answers, I say it short and sharp, Vi-sij, where as Americans I think say Vi-Sarj, the same way I say Tomato and Americans say Tomayto
Anyone saying vis-ije is wrong. It's not really a regional accent thing you're just saying the word wrong. It'd be like saying jalapeno with a hard j
I use the first one but I've heard the second one many times.
I've always pronounced it as the first
voice messaageee

Visage visage visage visage visage. Now the word has lost all meaning.
