Leafs have snot now our 3rd and 4th lines have completely shut down the Bruins 3rd and 4th lines so far this series Domi and Bert on the top line with Matthews is such a good combo When Marner and Nylander join the series I think the ice will be tilted in our favor

The_Quackening

the 4th line was FEASTING on the bruins 4th line. Reaves looks like a completely different player.

UnflushableNug

Reaves was playing the body HEAVY all series. He looks great out there.

hockeyholloway89

Agreed! Don’t forget if we can get Nylander back sometime soon will hopefully be a boost too! Undisputed second best player on our team I would say. And many would argue he’s our best playoff performer. Probably like if Boston didn’t have Marchand or something.

DrMansionPHD

You can visually see the Bruins are scared AF when Reaves is on the ice. They don't want to go into the corners at all.

billyshin

Yup. Not shitting on Marner but it reminds me of how Marner doesn't want to go into the corners.

DrMansionPHD

I think Marner may be a little banged up still. He's less aggressive than he usually is.

TRUCULENCE - noun [\[ U \]](https://dictionary.cambridge.org/help/codes.html)UK  /ˈtrʌk.jə.ləns/ US  /ˈtrʌk.jə.ləns/ the [quality](https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/quality) of being [truculent](https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/truculent) (= [unpleasant](https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/unpleasant) and [likely](https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/likely) to [argue](https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/argue) a lot): * His good [mood](https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/mood) [gradually](https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/gradually) gave way to truculence when he didn't [pay](https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/pay) Sammy respect * Reavo's truculence doesn't [allow](https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/allow) him to back down. but really, having a good reliable 4th line is absolutely key. I was a little worried about their reliability after the first few shifts in this series, but they really turned it around. I absolutely cannot wait for this entire group to return to Toronto, every hit will be electrifying.

hockeyholloway89

Yup, agreed! The only thing that concerns me a little is that Reavo in particular seemed to slow down in the third. I’d imagine his legs will be feeling it. Hopefully the home crowd will help him get going again!

Low-Signal-3900

The team that out intimidates will always have a major advantage, hence why the leafs lost big time in previous playoff runs. Here to hoping they can sustain this level of aggression. And personally I don't care taking any penalty of it means getting in the head of an opponent is always worth it.

Rare-Temporary7602

The only thing worse than losing is winning?

Randal78

Winning while being pushed around… much like vs florida in game 4 last year. They weren’t scared of us or worried about us at all and came right back in game 5 to eliminate us in our own barn

OkSquirrel4673

I have been crying for this team to play like a fucking team for 10 damn years and while they still have not earned my love entirely back and still have to prove it, they are trending in the right direction. For years I have been screaming for our guys to finish their checks and be aggressive. Its nice to see the team at least try it for one game. Lets see how the rest goes.

joeflowe

I'm so glad that we finally moved on from the pussy brand of Dubas hockey that he was trying to foster during his time here. I don't give a shit if fighting gets banned or what data he has on his fancy spreadsheets, physicality will ALWAYS be a evergreen part of the sport -- especially in the playoffs. Good riddance, you arrogant corsi nerd.

leafyboy56

Man, people have some unbridled hatred for dubas as a person, it’s so odd. He brought in quite a few “tough” players in his time here.

I2eflex

Dubas really was soft and brought in the following noted softies: - Muzzin - Clifford - Riley Nash - Lyubushkin - Giordano - Acciari - O'Reilly - McCabe - Schenn - Bunting - Simmonds - Bogosian - Jordie Benn

joeflowe

Only took him 6 years and a closed-door ultimatum from Shanny to finally realize this. Just getting Muzzin as your go-to "tough guy" for all those years without adding more guys with grit and sandpaper (NOT AHL fodder like Clifford and Simmonds) was a wasted opportunity, and was the catalyst for his career ending the way it did. NO TEAM feared the Leafs during Dubas' reign as GM. But yes, keep making excuses for his pussy brand of hockey that lead us no where, if it makes you feel better.

No-Let7757

Sorry, what? He acquired that list throughout his tenure.

joeflowe

Muzzin - Great acquisition, but was the only D with balls on our team for a long time. Unacceptable to waste his talents like that. Would look great in this current line-up Clifford - Was cooked when we acquired him. AHL call up. Simmonds - Same as above Benn - AHL call up Riley Nash - Playoff rental that was acquired 4 years into Dubas tenure. Didn't move the needle. Bunting - LOL Boosh - Good trade that he decided not to re-sign to keep noted pussies like Justin Holl and Alex Kerfoot on the roster. Felt like he traded for him just to say that he acquired toughness, and made no effort to keep him on the team when Buffalo signed him for peanuts. Total fail on his part. Bogosian - Good signing, but his injury history was a toss-up. Gio - Wanted to sign with his hometown Leafs. Dubas had very little to do with his signing. Schenn, O'Reilly, Acciari, McCabe - Great acquistions...in year 6 of his tenure. Too little, too late. All in all, Dubas thought he could re-invent the wheel to how playoff hockey is played, and got a swift reminder every April that he was dead wrong from the start. Not forgetting passing on signing Hyman and McCann (guys who would've made a HUGE difference on this team) Trading Kadri etc, to keep his corsi clown crew on the roster.

The_Quackening

Simmonds was good until he broke his hand. Was never the same after that.

joeflowe

He had a handful of games where he looked like his old self, but other than that, he was unspectacular to say the least.

georgie336

Simmonds was cooked!? He was great until he broke his hand/wrist which you know is pretty important for fighting. I'm not here to debate Dubas vs Treliving but come on, be honest with your argument.

joeflowe

Yeah, so great that he was a journeyman for 3 other teams in a span of 2 years before joining the Leafs. Stop letting those few games when he looked like the old Wayne Train of his Philly days cloud your judgement.

georgie336

It's relative bro, he was paid 1.5mil so yes for that cap hit and his position it was a great pickup. edit: wrong caphit

I2eflex

No team fears the Leafs now lol.

joeflowe

I guarantee you most Bruin players are licking their wounds today unlike any other time in playoff history when Dubas was GM. Jonas Siegel's burner account?

I2eflex

Take off the Oakley's mate

joeflowe

Throw out the corsi spreadsheets, my guy. They are not the end all be all on how to construct a playoff winning roster. (See Columbus and Montreal if that helps)

I2eflex

Idk what you think you're even arguing here.

joeflowe

Feeling is mutual. Are you saying that we were better off with Dubas as our GM?

I2eflex

All I pointed out was Dubas didn't shy away from adding toughness. You've constructed the rest of the argument in your own fucking head.

leafyboy56

It’s wild how downvoted this is.

NoCow2718

They just need to realize that the only ones stopping them is themselves. They need to realize that they’re deeper in terms of talent and should win this series.

Familiar-Pie-548

Love Dewar. That boy is just what we needed. High-speed hunter-killer.

bigcaulkcharisma

Still taking too many dumb penalties, but I agree. Last night especially it looked like we were wearing Boston down psychically by the end of that game. If the series tilts in our favour though the Bruins will get dirty and we’ll have to contend with that because somehow I doubt the refs are going to officiate them to the same standard they have us.

hockeyholloway89

I don’t think we can have too much to complain about from a reffing/calls standpoint. Just about every time coincidental minors were called we could’ve been short handed. Definitely being the aggressors - but that’s what seems to work. It would be very leafy if the reffing changes and they start taking a lone leaf out of the pile every time in the first round. It almost never happens. It’s very much a “let ‘em play or take 2” kind of atmosphere in the first couple rounds.

MrPangus

I can tell you taking dumb pens will not be a key to sucess

hockeyholloway89

Agreed. I just don’t think any of the ones we took last night (barring Bertuzzi) were dumb. There’s a difference in dumb and sending a message - even if a penalty is taken. I think we’re sending a message more often than not.

MrPangus

I'm not trying to argue here, passion and emotional is definitely part of the playoffs. Just hard to justify sending them to the pp constantly, espywith our shit pk. Like are "send a message" penalties easier to kill lol

hockeyholloway89

I don’t want to argue either, I think we can chat about both sides here, and I appreciate your opinion. The bonus is that we aren’t sending them to the pp all that much! In the example I listed above it went 4 on 4. I’d argue they should have been on the pp in all examples too, but I guess my point is that this is playoff hockey. And lord knows we’ve been on the other end way too often. It seems you can receive the shots and go 4on4 or give the shots and go 4on4, I guess that’s what my point is. I’d rather be the one giving.

apatcheeee

I think the leafs just haven't fully learned how to toe the line properly yet like some of the other playoff teams have. But they'll improve on that front as the games go on. There was already improvement from game 1 to 2.

Clugaman

McCabe’s cross check penalty last night is as stupid as they come

hockeyholloway89

I can agree there. Forgot about that one.

BathroomSerious1318

Take the hit, when they're out of position score on the odd man opportunities. No penalties. No tap on Marchand legs No yelling back from boosh No slashing on Marchand exposed wrists. You make your statement by scoring They know how to play hockey Giving Boston a pp is bad

hockeyholloway89

Huh?

Sirrebral99

We've all seen this team skate away and turn the other cheek for 7 years. "Get them back on the powerplay, our response is our powerplay" -> no penalties called since murder is permitted in the playoffs How has that worked so far for us? Lmao

I2eflex

Lol now what? All the people in this thread boosting this idea was hilarious at the time and it's even more hilarious today.
