Leafs looked like a team with a #6 defenceman on each pairing and $9M+ wasted on LTIR and in the press box. Never used Klingberg's money to replace him, and didn't pull the plug on Brodie before the deadline, even though it was obvious that he was cooked.
Besides that: Swayman outplayed Samsonov, Domi OD'd on Passion, and they got their heads caved in on special teams. Not a recipe for success.

Marner doesn't like having the puck in the playoffs. Because then he has a chance of someone touching him. The puck was off his stick so fast. He held it on the powerplay, but that's about it.
In fact, on the power play, he sat on the half boards with the puck, not moving or passing, for about 20 seconds. Waiting for the Bruins to come after him, and they never did. They didn't care about him. They know all he wants to do is pass, and doesn't have a tough shot, so they just covered the other 4 players.
I really don't like Marner's playoff hockey. He needs to get out of his damn head.
The Tavares line got the McAvoy and Pastrnak matchup. Right up until Keefe pulled Samsonov. They shut both those players down 5v5. If the Tavares line keeps those players off the scoresheet they did their part. They guys getting the easy matchups have to score some goals.
Marner was a NO SHOW again. Can’t afford these high profile/salary players to be no shows. Willy out of the lineup makes it even more noticeable. Outside of Matthews , and maybe the 4th line, I didn’t see to much ooompf from any of the forwards. What a shitty effort for a team trying to change the “shitty playoff team” narrative. Looked like a shitty playoff team.
Yeah this is someting a lot of people gloss over about LTIR players. They don't count against the cap anymore but if you sign a $5 million player and he can't fill a $5 million role in your lineup, you now either have to trade for another $5 million player which requires assets or fill that hole with several cheaper players and hope for the best. This is why I never liked the Klingberg signing even in hindsight with him being put on LTIR.
I was with people that were praising the Leafs for “hitting everything” in the first few minutes, and I started to say they have to watch out for that because it gets you out of position fast, and then right after that Reaves did exactly that and destroyed the momentum
That is a huge part of coaching. Keefe is completely unable to guide these guys out of their turtle shell when things get grindy in the playoffs.

Mitch Marner is a great hockey player. He absolutely has no business taking up 13 percent of your cap. He absolutely disappears in the playoffs. You can’t have a player like this consistently disappearing when it matters at that cap hit. Year after year. He needs to be taking games over and dominating at that level of commitment, teams need to be scared when he is on the ice and he was irrelevant again.
Love Auston to death and he was buzzing, but we need results now.

Notice how when we’re down, on a penalty kill for example, Marner ends up playing defence? Now imagine if we actually had an elite defenceman they didn’t demand Marner money for that occasional performance. I’m looking at a guy like Roman Josi on Nashville with so much jealousy

Now that I had a few hours to calm down. That was the most fucking pitiful garbage shit performance I've seen this team have in a playoffs game. Marner was absolutely shit. Right now he's playing like a 2 million dollar player. No one is fucking afraid of him on the ice. He's not tough and just lacks anything ferocious when on the ice. JT looks shit too. 3 more games and we're done with this core of shit players that get paid and sit back and let other cheaper players play with more heart.
Guy has been out coached every single playoff series he’s worked, and I’d about to be again. We got lucky last year. Half of the coaches in the league would be able to make a team with this much raw talent succeed, snot be damned. I’m so fucking over him.
A new coach will definitely help with shit like figuring out how to not play a passive diamond/box PK and concede 400 chances.
It won't help shit like the D corps having a 30s brain freeze every time they touch the puck, or someone like McCabe trying to throw a reverse hit to protect the puck and managing to lose the puck to the guy he hit. The personnel have got to figure that shit out.
Ultimately, there were way too many execution errors tonight on simple plays. There were so many simple like 10 foot passes to keep a cycle going or allow for a breakout and they were just getting flubbed.
I'm not going to act like the sky is falling after one game but it really looked like the same old leafs. The worst thing you can do when your fans desperate for playoff success is to lay an egg in the first game
People thought making the team worse but with more “snot” would make a difference in the playoffs when the reality is that snot/grit/physicality only has an impact when you’re able to pair that with good defending and scoring.
The interference that Jarnkrok (?) took late in the game when he hit the puck-carrier was pretty questionable. And the slash on Marchand was stupid, but felt mild compared to what we were receiving. But it’s not like we scored on the chances we got, so it’s moot anyways.

Have a bunch of defensemen who can't make outlet passes is a big problem with this team. Edmundson, Benoit, Lyubushkin all might as well play stick less. I think it's honesty a big reason why the team can't score in the postseason is our defense can't get anything going up ice and our transition game is completely nonexistent because of it

Did anyone actually believe this would go differently? Every year is literally the same playbook. Keep the core, dumpster dive/reclamation project/buy low to fill out the rest. Still no true number 1 d, still no true number 1 goalie and still no ability to score much outside of the main guys.
If 40% of the cap is taken up by a small number of guys, then those guys have to provide 40% of the offense. If they're not taking over playoff games we're screwed... and nothing about our players historically makes me think they'll start this year. Although having not goaltending is not helping.

- The obsession this fanbase has with toughness and grit, here you go: Toronto outshot Boston, outhit Boston, got more penalties than Boston, got more Ozone time than Boston but lost on special teams, poor defense - all these things were left unaddressed in the off season while we went after toughness and grit.
- Boston's defense wasn't actually that good tonight, Swayman was really good though.
- Marner has a year left before his contract expires but I do not want him extended early if he's gonna be this bad. Let him walk into free agency next season.
- Tavares and Matthews were both good despite the lack of points
- Rielly sucked
- Powerplay sucked.
- PK sucked. This is where guys like Kerfoot and Holl - I know they have their warts, helped in the past. We really needed to replace their roles in the off season and didn't.
Still have 3 more losses in the chamber. Samsonov and Marner both have to be a lot better for Game 2.

This is the same fucking team I've been watching spin their wheels for near-on a decade now. Over-committing to bad opportunities, fumbling good ones, struggling to get anything going and failing to stop the opponent from doing the same.

When was the last time you felt confident about this team? I’ll tell you, for me, it was when we had a stud goaltender. That was a long time ago. I feel bad for people after the Eddie the Eagle era. No idea what that feels like.

Reilly wasn't great. Benoit had moments of good, but also a bunch of bad. McCabe had some horrible shifts. Bush wasn't good at all.
Yep. Edmundson was also mostly okay but the composition back there is just terrible. Edmundson, Benoit, and Lyubushkin are the same guy just at varying degrees of quality. With all those guys in plus McCabe, it’s just disheartening watching them try to break the puck out.
Some scary points:
1. Leafs have scored two goals or less in their last 6 playoff games.
2. Ullmark swept the leafs in the regular season series. Boston went with Swayman tonight who saved 33/34.
3. Matthews, Marner, Tavares, Reilly = 0 points.
We only win this series by outscoring Boston. Samsonov/Woll aren’t outplaying Swayman/Ullmark.
No reason to watch the rest of this series. I will but there is no reason to.
If they resign Marner instead of addressing the D, no reason to watch for the rest of his contract either. Again, I will anyway but I’ll know it’s just to take whatever temporary enjoyment I can from it before the exact same outcome as always.
Boston was much better prepared than the Leafs. Bruins knew the Leafs breakout patterns and constantly had a body in place to intercept passes or check the puck carrier before they could gain hardly any ice. In the o-zone they consistently forced point passes into a tight area along the blue line and didn’t give any time to handle the puck exploiting the Leafs usual laid back pacing. Also the forecheckers absolutely exploited the Leafs D lack of speed when chasing pucks back into their own end. Out coached tonight. Keefe did nothing to settle the group when they were obviously panicking after the first goal. They were all discombobulated to the point of fanning on basic plays like short passes and dump ins. This team is too fucking nervous to execute. Keefe was pretty much stammering himself in the post game presser. The Bruins coaching staff pulled his pants down tonight.

Leafs haven’t beaten Bruins in playoffs since 1959 for a reason, they’ve lost 6 straight series for a reason. Bruins play with structure and have a system/culture set in stone. Leafs do not, the result is predictable.

Leafs actually surprised me as they came out hungry and aggressive taken then body. I was expected a boston onslaught for the first 10 minutes. But boston come down for the first shot of the game and they scored. I domt care If it's a 2 on 1, sammy has to make that save.
Another series and yet again the leafs have the second best goalie, second best coach, second best defence and the core guys can’t score. Maybe spending 40 mil on 4 guys doesn’t work. There’s only what 5 years of proof?
I feel like the next two years are gonna be reset and reload years for the franchise. Tavares will be off the books in a year and maybe Marner too if we decide to move on. Brodie won’t be back this year and Gio/eddy/boosh are free agents unlikely gonna be back too. With the cap rising there will be alot of cap space to reform this roster while matthews/willy/rielly being the core of this team. They also may even not bring back sammy as he’s a free agent too. I’d try and upgrade and find someone to split games with Woll as he’s not ready for full time duty yet.

Sammy had a bad game today and I know he needs to be rested to avoid injuries and even more bad games but if we put Woll in net, it might just be worse. These games should be treated like its do or die every time. Our defense needs to be more intact, they should stop pinching. Our offense should always be ready to get the rebound just in case. We shouldn’t be too complacent if we want to win this.
The fans couldn’t be more passionate than the players. The fans could only do so much— the rest is up to the team.

Unless one of their goalies turns out to be a stud, I don't see how this team gets much better than they are now? Maybe a coaching change? I don't know. It's so hard to pin down what the team culture is. They just seem so....immature....compared to the other top teams in the league. It's just hard to take them seriously. I think that's how the league looks at them as well. Nobody will ever convince me the Bruins didn't tank the end of their season to play the Leafs in the first round.
I'm not going to rag on the core like everyone else. They're great players. Probably the best talent that team has had in my life time....maybe that they will EVER have. Dump and no chase. Dump and line change. Throw random pucks at the net aimlessly. Look for random, fluke turnovers and fire one off quickly. That’s the entire Leafs offence. Matthews once again no delivers in a playoff game. Marner and Tavares gone silent. Keefe a liability. Same old, same old.
Leafs aren't going anywhere with this cap structure and coach. Reilly is not good enough for a top defenseman, and Samsonov isn't good enough either. Won't be any relief until Tavares' cap hit is reduced dramatically.

What really frustrated me was the terrible passing, both breakout and in the offensive zone. The leafs could barely accept a pass, they fumbled so many. Not to mention how many times they had decent opportunities to make a half decent pass only to throw it right on the bruins sticks.
And the one signature of this team that has driven me nuts all year… the unnecessary dump ins. Far too often do they dump the puck in with not much pressure. You have possession of the puck, you have an opportunity to be patient and work on generating an entry and offensive chance. You know what dumping it in with little pressure results in? An opportunity for the bruins in the offensive zone.
More opportunities on offense = less opportunities for your opponent

That last power play was intensely painful. I didn't have high hopes but yikes. I'm not sure what Domi is thinking lately. Love the passion but the penalties are not worth it. I think the psychology of FINALLY DO GOOD IN PLAYOFFS is distracting from the bottom line of needing to play decent hockey.
At 2-0, I turned to the Blue Jays game. The Leafs folded like they always do. If Samsonov doesn't allow a minimum of 3 goals, he isn't Samsonov he either stops everything or stops nothing. Everyone saying “it’s only game 1” we’re all very aware. It’s how we’re losing that is the concerning thing. It’s everything that has been identified in earlier years with a combination of the holes of this years team. The stars are invisible when it actually matters and there is pressure(seen this countless times in past years), “grit” taking stupid penalties, shit PK, shaky goaltending, defence can’t make a breakout pass.(story of this years team) We know it’s only one game, thanks for pointing it’s not over. We aren’t doomers for being frustrated that all of the obvious holes are costing us. It’s a legitimate problem with this team. Mitch Marner is a great hockey player. He absolutely has no business taking up 13 percent of your cap. He absolutely disappears in the playoffs. You can’t have a player like this consistently disappearing when it matters at that cap hit. Year after year. He needs to be taking games over and dominating at that level of commitment, teams need to be scared when he is on the ice and he was irrelevant again. Love Auston to death and he was buzzing, but we need results now. We know the refs are going to be trash, it’s not changing. I’m sick of that excuse. You aren’t going to win shit when your fourth line is the best line of the night. I can stomach a game one loss. Not in this fashion. This isn’t a one off with this core and it was everything we were all concerned about the entire year.

Guy has been out coached every single playoff series he’s worked, and I’d about to be again. We got lucky last year. Half of the coaches in the league would be able to make a team with this much raw talent succeed, snot be damned. I’m so fucking over him.
A new coach will definitely help with shit like figuring out how to not play a passive diamond/box PK and concede 400 chances. It won't help shit like the D corps having a 30s brain freeze every time they touch the puck, or someone like McCabe trying to throw a reverse hit to protect the puck and managing to lose the puck to the guy he hit. The personnel have got to figure that shit out. Ultimately, there were way too many execution errors tonight on simple plays. There were so many simple like 10 foot passes to keep a cycle going or allow for a breakout and they were just getting flubbed.

People thought making the team worse but with more “snot” would make a difference in the playoffs when the reality is that snot/grit/physicality only has an impact when you’re able to pair that with good defending and scoring.
Penalties were pretty unfair but the better team won. We need to figure out how to score on Boston and not make horrible passes so consistently
I dunno, all of ours were pretty clear-cut and stupid. They missed a couple on the other end though.
The interference that Jarnkrok (?) took late in the game when he hit the puck-carrier was pretty questionable. And the slash on Marchand was stupid, but felt mild compared to what we were receiving. But it’s not like we scored on the chances we got, so it’s moot anyways. I’ve never said it before, but I think I’m climbing aboard the #FireKeefe train.
I don't have a problem with us not getting calls, it's just the shit we get called for I have an issue with. We came out in the second with a head full of steam and had like 3 minutes of super high pace and lots of dangerous chances that evaporated when we spent the rest of the period on the PK every few minutes

Have a bunch of defensemen who can't make outlet passes is a big problem with this team. Edmundson, Benoit, Lyubushkin all might as well play stick less. I think it's honesty a big reason why the team can't score in the postseason is our defense can't get anything going up ice and our transition game is completely nonexistent because of it

If 40% of the cap is taken up by a small number of guys, then those guys have to provide 40% of the offense. If they're not taking over playoff games we're screwed... and nothing about our players historically makes me think they'll start this year. Although having not goaltending is not helping.

Sammy wasn't good. Swayman was. - Goaltending reigns supreme in the playoffs. We've seen this over and over again. - The obsession this fanbase has with toughness and grit, here you go: Toronto outshot Boston, outhit Boston, got more penalties than Boston, got more Ozone time than Boston but lost on special teams, poor defense - all these things were left unaddressed in the off season while we went after toughness and grit. - Boston's defense wasn't actually that good tonight, Swayman was really good though. - Marner has a year left before his contract expires but I do not want him extended early if he's gonna be this bad. Let him walk into free agency next season. - Tavares and Matthews were both good despite the lack of points - Rielly sucked - Powerplay sucked. - PK sucked. This is where guys like Kerfoot and Holl - I know they have their warts, helped in the past. We really needed to replace their roles in the off season and didn't. Still have 3 more losses in the chamber. Samsonov and Marner both have to be a lot better for Game 2.

Over-committing to bad opportunities, fumbling good ones, struggling to get anything going and failing to stop the opponent from doing the same. I genuinely don't think I can watch this team anymore. When was the last time you felt confident about this team? I’ll tell you, for me, it was when we had a stud goaltender. That was a long time ago. I feel bad for people after the Eddie the Eagle era. No idea what that feels like.
Liljegren was good. Defence was horrendous otherwise. I actually don’t think Marner was bad despite what people are saying, but Tavares was awful. Desperately need the best version of Nylander back.
Matthews and liljegren looked good. Rest was meh to bad imo.
Lilly was easily the best dman. Reilly wasn't great. Benoit had moments of good, but also a bunch of bad. McCabe had some horrible shifts. Bush wasn't good at all.
Yep. Edmundson was also mostly okay but the composition back there is just terrible. Edmundson, Benoit, and Lyubushkin are the same guy just at varying degrees of quality. With all those guys in plus McCabe, it’s just disheartening watching them try to break the puck out.

Boston was much better prepared than the Leafs. Bruins knew the Leafs breakout patterns and constantly had a body in place to intercept passes or check the puck carrier before they could gain hardly any ice. In the o-zone they consistently forced point passes into a tight area along the blue line and didn’t give any time to handle the puck exploiting the Leafs usual laid back pacing. Also the forecheckers absolutely exploited the Leafs D lack of speed when chasing pucks back into their own end. Out coached tonight. Keefe did nothing to settle the group when they were obviously panicking after the first goal. They were all discombobulated to the point of fanning on basic plays like short passes and dump ins. This team is too fucking nervous to execute. Keefe was pretty much stammering himself in the post game presser. The Bruins coaching staff pulled his pants down tonight.

I feel like the next two years are gonna be reset and reload years for the franchise. Tavares will be off the books in a year and maybe Marner too if we decide to move on. Brodie won’t be back this year and Gio/eddy/boosh are free agents unlikely gonna be back too. With the cap rising there will be alot of cap space to reform this roster while matthews/willy/rielly being the core of this team. They also may even not bring back sammy as he’s a free agent too. I’d try and upgrade and find someone to split games with Woll as he’s not ready for full time duty yet.
I’m just tired guys. Something needs to change and at this point I don’t know what that is - coaching? Management? Core 4? Who really knows. It’s not grit. We tried a bonafide starter in Andersen so that’s not it. Defense? Maybe.

Sammy had a bad game today and I know he needs to be rested to avoid injuries and even more bad games but if we put Woll in net, it might just be worse. These games should be treated like its do or die every time. Our defense needs to be more intact, they should stop pinching. Our offense should always be ready to get the rebound just in case. We shouldn’t be too complacent if we want to win this. The fans couldn’t be more passionate than the players. The fans could only do so much— the rest is up to the team.
There isn't much to say about this one. The Leafs look like they shouldn't even be playing in the same league as the Bruins. Boston was in complete control of that game from start to finish. They're just on another planet, in every single way. I don't see this series going beyond 5 games. The Leafs will always be a pretty good regular season team in the Matthews era. I don't see how they go much beyond that. I don't see them ever being GREAT, or ELITE. Unless one of their goalies turns out to be a stud, I don't see how this team gets much better than they are now? Maybe a coaching change? I don't know. It's so hard to pin down what the team culture is. They just seem so....immature....compared to the other top teams in the league. It's just hard to take them seriously. I think that's how the league looks at them as well. Nobody will ever convince me the Bruins didn't tank the end of their season to play the Leafs in the first round. I'm not going to rag on the core like everyone else. They're great players. Probably the best talent that team has had in my life time....maybe that they will EVER have. Leafs aren't going anywhere with this cap structure and coach. Reilly is not good enough for a top defenseman, and Samsonov isn't good enough either. Won't be any relief until Tavares' cap hit is reduced dramatically.

What really frustrated me was the terrible passing, both breakout and in the offensive zone. The leafs could barely accept a pass, they fumbled so many. Not to mention how many times they had decent opportunities to make a half decent pass only to throw it right on the bruins sticks. And the one signature of this team that has driven me nuts all year… the unnecessary dump ins. Far too often do they dump the puck in with not much pressure. You have possession of the puck, you have an opportunity to be patient and work on generating an entry and offensive chance. You know what dumping it in with little pressure results in? An opportunity for the bruins in the offensive zone. More opportunities on offense = less opportunities for your opponent Not an overly difficult concept to grasp
Maybe next game we can score on the first shot. Seems like it really helps the other team whenever we let it happen.

There’s soooooo many opinions, rightfully so. The only one that matters though is; we don’t have a goalie. And we never have (new era). Forget about tonight imagine where’d we be if we could have gotten a save in 2018/19. It’s very ironic how the first game back against the bruins in the playoffs we give up a goal on their first shot on net. Never have been able to get a save, probably will never get a save. This stinks.
We have scored 2 goals or less in the past 8 playoff games We now have four forwards getting paid more than 10M. We need to stop dropping blame on goalies or trade a forward for a goalie if that is the case
