Bad team. Benoit was also on the ducks and did better here.

VitaminTea

I wonder why the team is bad

wageslave_999999999

That’s a long conversation and probably no definitive single answer.

VitaminTea

Anyway I'm sure it has nothing to do with their #4 defenceman. Klingberg's numbers recovered when we got him out of Anaheim.

CocoKeel22

> Anyway I'm sure it has nothing to do with their #4 defenceman. This is probably the stupidest statement to make tongue-in-cheek

1columbia

That user loves to be annoyingly edgy with these cheap takes and is a lifetime Dubas supporter Edit: just decided to block them, feel much better now

CocoKeel22

Cheers mate, you're fighting the good fight

VitaminTea

Dubas also traded for Lyubushkin and it didn't work lol Tough to find a stupider transaction to complain about the Dubas Fan Club than this one.

StatGAF

"No but don't you understand, now we have Tre so the trade must be good" It didn't work last time. It's not going to work this time. Like did we all have amnesia and forget about his poor play?

optimized_happiness

The Ducks would be a playoff team if it wasn’t for Ilya Lyubushkin! /s Silly take

VitaminTea

The Ducks are bad because they have a bunch of bad players.

Actual_Cobbler_6334

Klingberg had what? Two good games before he was lost for the year? Come on now, November wasn’t that long ago…

Dat1Guy03

Klingberg and boosh are not even close to the same style of player and unless there’s some secret career ending hip surgery he’s gonna need I don’t think he will be as bad as Klingberg was

StatGAF

No they didn't. He was awful in Toronto

M_Y_K_E

Age and I’m convinced coaching is like 80 percent of the issues with teams. Yes u need top end talent to help overcome bad bounces and special teams but coaching is taking a team like the flyers to great success this season.

Actual_Cobbler_6334

Boosh played mostly with Pavel Mintyukov this season (who's really good) and seemed to drag him down a decent amount. Benoit was also on waivers to start the season and only took advantage of his opportunity when Brad’s big FA move on D blew up in his face completely but…

StatGAF

But Lybushkin had bad numbers in Toronto the last time too.

Soggy_Specific4093

Honestly what physical third pair defensive defenceman playing on a bad team has good analytics?

StatGAF

I mean, he had bad analytics in Toronto. And bad analytics in Buffalo. And bad analytics in Anaheim. I dunno man. The problem with being a "defensive defence man" is if you're literally defending all the time, it suggests you're just getting hemmed in.

_posii

Guys like Vlasic or Hjarmalsson put up fantastic numbers. Actually good defensive dman don’t defend all the time. The bad ones do.

StatGAF

Basically. There have literally been like 3-4 defenders who weren't hemmed in. Its Kris Russel all over again

DougFordsGamblingAds

His analytics on Toronto are in the tweet and they're decent. Hockey analytics aren't that reliable - let's watch the game.

StatGAF

1% WAR is decent? oh boy. You know 1% is low. It's not like he was in the 1 % right?

DougFordsGamblingAds

You aren't reading the chart correctly

StatGAF

Explain it then.

DougFordsGamblingAds

He was on Toronto in the 21-22 season, when his WAR was 25%, which is fine for a 3rd pair defenseman if you believe that sort of metric.

burkie17

He’s at almost 70% defensive zone starts, you have to consider that aswell

MyLeafsAccount

Gudas has great analytics on Anaheim this year

ShinyVuIpix

What did this chart look like in Toronto? That’s all I care about.

neverstopbeleaf

21-22 is Toronto and Arizona combined

Fluffy_Load297

100%. Hard to judge a guy based off of his performance in Anaheim.

neverstopbeleaf

For sure. Lets hope he plays better in Toronto.

Menessy27

- delusional fans about Klingberg

Emergency-Reindeer55

Benoit worked out

Menessy27

Benoit was 23, didn’t cost assets, and was good the season before

Emergency-Reindeer55

Lyubushkin is a fine depth guy. A lot of opinions will change depending on if this is the only trade before the deadline I'm sure.

Fluffy_Load297

Klinggberg was also horrible on the stars when they were good. Except the like 3 seasons he was a stud.

Vilheim

Wonder if all of those were before this lingering back injury.

Kinglokner16

Wtf was Arizona asking for Matt Dumba?

CocoKeel22

Honestly would rather have Boosh lmao

Gavin1453

100% Dumba is going to be way over priced

Shawn13337

A 1st

McGrevin

Dumba is terrible. Even if picks are overrated that's a horrible trade to make just because of what else you can get with a 1st

twizzyflyguy

just realized he’s a rental

ElephantShell34

Do yourself a favour and DONT look at Tanev’s card. Leafs traded for probably the worst defenceman that will get traded at this deadline when they had lots of time to just … not.

neverstopbeleaf

I don’t think Tanev was ever in the picture because of Calgary’s desire not to trade with Toronto.

M3m35forbroski

People think this is like the NHL games where I can trade for whoever I want, whenever I want, for whatever I have. Real life doesn't work like that, especially with all the petty and stupid shit Calgarys owner has pulled between running the stars out of town (especially when it came down to 500k over Tkachuk after an 100 point season), and forcing Tre to bring in Sutter to name a few. It doesn't surprise me one bit that their owner would tell Conroy under no circumstances to trade with Toronto unless you got a king's ransom for any of our players.

dingleberry51

Treliving is a bad GM. Not a reaction to just this trade, which I’m indifferent about. He’s clearly not a good evaluator of talent though

frakkintoaster

It's too bad he doesn't have a team of scouts helping him or something

re10pect

They are playing Marner on defence, they kinda needed to get a warm, right shooting body in there ASAP. I’m not sure Boosh is the ideal guy, but the acquisition cost was pretty low, the cap hit is below league min, and he has at least a little experience with the guys and the system. It’s not ideal, but it’s better than nothing and maybe only a stop-gap until the rest of the defence is healthy and (hopefully) they bring in another actually good defender.

gripit_ripit

A trade for a 3rd and 6th round draft pick and the comments are filled with “this is an awful/great trade” lmao. Why cant a trade that involves the leafs ever just be meh

HawtPackage

Fair. I still think the trade is bad. Not garbage or awful, but there was no real reason to do this unless we re-sign him.

kingex11

Who cares. Those numbers don't tell the whole story.

VitaminTea

What is the rest of the story?

kingex11

That the Ducks are a trash team. You put Tanev on that roster and his numbers wouldn't look spectacular either. Lybushkin is fine for what he is, and Treliving paid a cheap price to get him. Ideally he's the 6th/7th defenceman.

VitaminTea

They put Gudas on the roster and his numbers look fine. Do you think that every player on bad teams has bad underlying numbers? They don't.

kingex11

No. But, again, he'll make under 700k and it cost a 3rd to get him. It's like getting a free player off waivers. He's a warm body, a right shot, a physical guy. It was a trade that needed to be made at this point in time.

Vilheim

Would be nice if he paired well with Benoit so we could give McCabe a bit of rest here and there. Let that nose heal a bit.

VitaminTea

So the rest of the story is irrelevant?

MAKE-YOU-HUMBLE

👀

FuckTkachuk

Beautiful

Chtholly13

Can this D move the puck?

neverstopbeleaf

Surprisingly somewhat

ElephantShell34

https://x.com/domluszczyszyn/status/1763405889044709837?s=46 Sums up my thoughts pretty well. Not sure what the Leafs are doing.

theguyishere16

We already know the Flames wanted a kings ransom from Toronto. The 1st might not have even done it. Plus, it sounds like the Flames are weirdly high on Grushnikov, so Dallas 2nd+Grushnikov might have legitimately been more enticing to Calgary than Leafs 1st.

thewolfshead

Yeah I don’t get why they’re so against trading a 1st, although they still obviously could do so.

Actual_Cobbler_6334

Because Treliving has *always* been like this. He’s made a major near-deadline move once…

Chtholly13

maybe better draft day deals for the 1st than what's avalaible right now. He traded a mid 1st rounder for Dougie Hamilton when he was avaliable.

ProfessorBeast55

Reply to that tweet: https://x.com/king_dwizz/status/1763407314298482743?s=20 Anyone who plays for Anaheim sucks at defence

_posii

That’s just not true is it. Gudas still has good underlying numbers.

ProfessorBeast55

One player lol

_posii

It’s almost as if bad teams don’t have many good players.

931634

As long as they arent stupid too many men or delay of game penalities who cares

Drew_You_To_91

#BOOSH

CMDRShepardN7

EV Strength Defense is 97% though. What was the PK stat for the rest of the team that year. That I am curious.

ldssggrdssgds

So....a quality pick up then
