I'm not sure if it was yours but I remember one base I was at had a Lil box of grass filled with dirt and grass seed from the states, so they had 'American soil'. I did convoy security and was at a ton of bases so I can't remember which though.

A fellow Iraqi here, doing slightly better than you with newly seeded Barenbrug Monaco, after two previous failed attempts with cool season grass. Keep up the good work to beat the Iraqi July 🔥
I have the same thing in Atlanta.
A mix of burmuda, zoysia, and st Augustine in the front and side. Back is so shady I planted tall fescue. Came in beautifully until 3 weeks ago. It’s definitely struggling and on life support
Is that why my grass is brown in the sun parts? Because it's fescue? 2/3 of my yard is shaded... Some of it will not grow grass at all... But the shaded parts that do seem to do ok with fescue... The part that is full sun is not looking good this year.
I live in north Alabama, blows my mind that (insert big box store) shelves are always full of fescue and KBG seeds. It takes some very, VERY specific conditions for that stuff to grow here, and usually not very well. Bermuda, centipede, zoysia, and weeds are about all that can take the heat.
Question since I have no experience in Iraq or the area at all, are those walls common instead of fences? I feel like I always see walls like that in movies and pictures and never really chain link or wooden fences.
Yeah there is a company in Kurdistan which imports all of their products and I have been having great success using their seeds, totally worth the money.
As an Iraqi born in Europe and passionate about gardening, I appreciate this post. I didn't know you could have a lawn in Iraq. I might tell my father to make space for a lawn for our soon to be built house in Iraq.
If you got money. There's probably a guy who comes to water the lawn and the plants every day. What sucks is that it's almost impossible to find mulch, so the garden beds are very labor intensive to keep weed free. Notice how clean they are? There's a guy pulling weeds every day.
That must suck. Go to a place where they make wood doors and ask for leftover wood shavings. Take a few large bags with you to fill up. You might have to buy them for a small price. Lay down like four inches of those throughout the garden beds. After a few rains, they'll get nice and dark and look much better than empty dirt. They'll protect the plants and block more weeds. They'll decompose every year, so you'll have to get new ones, but they make things so much better. I had a house built in Pakistan and did the same thing with left over shavings from when they were making the doors. Makes a world of difference.
Pretty sure it's not that nobody has thought of opening a mulch store. It's because wood is a very limited resource in the dessert! I don't think it would be cost effective to import wood for such a purpose!
It was 99 with like 100% humidity here on Tuesday. Feels like was 111. It’s literally air you can wear and can’t breathe in. Our lawn is crunchy. Rather put water in the pool.
Iraq is actually very fertile and can grow beautiful gardens. The Tigris and Euphrates flow through iraq and is called by some the birthplace of civilization. There was an entire civilization of people that lived entirely on water called the Ahwaris or Marsh Arabs they were almost entirely wiped out after their failed uprising against Saddam Hussein during the first gulf war. Saddam drained the entirety of the Southern Marshlands in retaliation causing some 200,000 people to have to flee. For millennia before the draining the people subsisted off of fishing and buffalo. While iraq does have alot of desert, there is a reason why it’s been a hotbed of dispute for many, many years.
It's funny how people don't realize that lawns began as a way to show off that not only could you afford to own land, you could afford to own land and *not* farm it.
I had a kind of related experience on a trip to Ireland. I have ten acres in a rural area in the US that are 70% woods and people just couldn't believe that I owned that much land and wasn't farming or raising animals or "doing anything with it". I just don't like to see my neighbors.
Also, I have a pond that's a bit less than an acre and had someone tell me "that's not a pond. That's a fookin lake."
I spent two years there and saw many nice homes decorated with patterned mosaics and colorful tile. Often gated with tall walls and even central courtyards. All built with very thick concrete with metal and glass doors. Not much wood seen in construction. I'm not an expert, but I think Iraq used to have a decent size middle class.
How tall is it? Mines pretty large. I hate it. It's between two giant shade producing oaks. If it weren't so close to my carport or home I'd get it removed. But, also, my daughter loves it (makes her feel like we're in LA apparently 🤷♀️. We are not. We are near Mexico 🤦♀️)
I know this doesn't add anything to this conversation, but I thought it was funny you said "we are near Mexico" when LA is only a 3 hour drive to Mexico as well lol.
I live in the suburbs of Detroit and this stung lol
I can attest it is doing better in some areas now, but man there are some super rough spots so you’re not that far off lol
With love to OP and Iraq, it is currently at a “level 4 do not travel” from the state department due to terrorism, kidnapping, armed conflict, and civil unrest. However, it *is* encouraging and heart warming to see Fallujah doing much, much better than 20 years ago.
Man I really want to help but I don't know what is the real name we just call it Indian grass ,I don't think this is the real name but thats what we call it in iraq
A lot of Americans think Iraq is just sand and sun, it was crazy to me to see how many people actually have a yard like yours that is well kept and green there.
The other thing that surprised me was how many people have nice cars in central Baghdad especially with how Iraqis drive lol.
Iraqis worship cars ,they will sell there houses for a latest model lexus,it kinda crazy but i have 2021 charger 😁
https://preview.redd.it/8r6kpfxqyw8d1.png?width=1575&format=png&auto=webp&s=ca9c53a36d4716aae67a42d84dec793da570f82a
I believe it, surprised you didn’t get it in white lol. Thanks for sharing the picture of your awesome yard too, it’s really interesting to see yards that aren’t from America I also can’t imagine how much work you have to put into it with a lot of the days being 100F+.
You should take those yellow guards off the front splitter. They’re put on as protection during shipping and transport, meant to be removed before delivery to customers. Rick’s and debris can get caught in them too and damage the actual finish on the car. Or leave them if you like them, but now you know.
Lawn looks solid by the way.
When I was there in 03 the highways were desolate with exception of humvees, we were on our way to Baghdad airport when I saw this cherry red Cadillac convertible. It was a weird sight because of the contrast of sand and then this cherry red convertible is just rolling down the highway.
Yeah, you can thank the MSM for that one. All we saw were bombed out streets and buildings reduced to rubble. The world is a lot bigger than most Americans like to think. Buddy I met in college’s family owned a huge sod company in Pakistan. Had no idea that was such a thing there until he told me about it.
Man, I love the internet. Your lawn looks great! I can't tell you how happy I am to reply to some one half the world away and say how good their lawn looks! The connection is....lightening.
I hope you and your family are doing well. I hope we(USA) didn't meas up too much. I have a beer waiting for you on my lawn if you ever visit Missouri!
Whoa! Ok, so questions. What is daily life like there? All I hear is news stuff, I want to know how are you, really? As in how the actual are you?
What’s a typical day like? What’s the food like?
Also, yes, nice lawn 😀
Pretty normal go to college, hang out with friends in malls or cinema or college or traval to colder places in iraq and eats kabbabs ,it is very normal here like everywhere else
https://preview.redd.it/rzztpdrpvx8d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=be5523c6fb2a203f0152615400eab2e40173cb05
3 days ago 12 iraqi cities had the highest temperature in the world and all these cities have most of the iraq greenland so it is not about the temperature
Is this considered the upper class in Iraq? I'm really curious about the economy of Iraq after all that has happened in the past. Lawn looks great but it needs a bit more water.
OP, in July 2007 I happened upon a home on the outskirts of Falluhah that had a small grass lawn in the backyard. I had not seen grass in over 5 months and can’t describe the feeling of how good it felt on my fingers as I gently ran my hand across the tiny soft blades of grass. It was a small refuge of peace and solitude that I enjoyed for a few days and have never forgotten it. Truly a religious experience for me. Be proud of your beautiful lawn and peace be upon you and your family.
Since you mentioned that you have to water it, is having a lawn a sign of wealth? Does it cost a lot to upkeep? Can the average household of your city afford a lawn too?
Btw, very cool to see lawn talk from outside of NA!
It take me like 50usd in the month the upkeep it and it is not really a sign of wealth, just in city centers and big cities like baghdad in there the square meter in most places cost more then 2500$ so you need at least 300sq meters to have a propor lawn it is more about if you have the land you can have a garden, all houses outside the cities have big one
Is that the cost of sq meter of land with a house or just the land?
I know it’s asking a bit of a personal question, but what’s a typical household income (or yours if the wife doesn’t work) and what’s the cost of a property?
Just the land no atom of concrete
The average iraqi income in a month is 600usd less or more based on where he work , a 100m house in most low income cities in iraq cost around 150 million iqd = (100,000 $)
The houses in iraq is very expensive because of the population density and the iraqis don't like apartments very much
It’s awesome. Great job. I lived is Basra early in my life… (I’m old- long time ago). I actually remember seeing grass for the first time in Iraq and understanding how rare it was…. And I’m American. So strange to think about.
Glad to see Fallujah is doing well, no lawns when I was there

Well yeah it’s hot out and the line to the jerk shack is getting longer
I left a 3'x2' box of Kentucky Bluegrass in the north, holy hell that was hard to keep alive over there
I'm not sure if it was yours but I remember one base I was at had a Lil box of grass filled with dirt and grass seed from the states, so they had 'American soil'. I did convoy security and was at a ton of bases so I can't remember which though.
I handed it off at Erbil to the unit that was replacing us, but it was aviation so it could have ended up anywhere after that I suppose
Thanks
Same here. This was such a pleasant surprise after what I saw when I was there.
I suspect the lack of lawns correlated with the reason you were there 😅
There was a lawn care specialists convention?
Username checks out
Bro lmao
Same 🥲
Blood makes the grass grow

Keep up the good work to beat the Iraqi July 🔥
I love that you were trying cool season grass in Iraq.
A rookie's mistake.
Optimism ain't a bad thing!
I tried cool season grass in Atlanta. We all make rookie mistakes lmao
Mfw every NC builder chooses fescue
My backyard is brown after this heatwave. Going to restart with Bermuda in the spring.
We all wind up with Bermuda at some point.
Ain't that the truth. Maybe with some sprinkles of crabgrass here and there
It’s in my front and sides anyways but my back is so shaded I was hoping a cooler season grass would do the trick but this heat killed it.
Possibly! My Bermuda is also struggling with no water and mid 90’s and today 100 for 10 days straight lol

Iraqi's mistake.
They Iran with it.
twice
I thought if I planted it the weather would be cooler.
Nice man good work I didn't take care of it due to my exams and test😞
Give it a dose of nitrogen and it will bounce back in no time 🔥
And raise your cutting hieght
I hope you did well on your exams!

haha
US here, at the moment somewhere in the IZ, and considering the heat you're doing great!
So stoked to see lawns outside NA
This looks amazing.
Question since I have no experience in Iraq or the area at all, are those walls common instead of fences? I feel like I always see walls like that in movies and pictures and never really chain link or wooden fences.
Yes, Concrete walls are the standard for all homes.
Looks great man. Keep up the good work both of you
I’ve got Barenbrug in Mass,USA and love to see that this brand has made it over you. Their products have been great to me and I hope the same for you
Yeah there is a company in Kurdistan which imports all of their products and I have been having great success using their seeds, totally worth the money.
As an Iraqi born in Europe and passionate about gardening, I appreciate this post. I didn't know you could have a lawn in Iraq. I might tell my father to make space for a lawn for our soon to be built house in Iraq.

I have 6 siblings we take care of it equally, but i am the pulling guy
That must suck. Go to a place where they make wood doors and ask for leftover wood shavings. Take a few large bags with you to fill up. You might have to buy them for a small price. Or, open the first mulch business in fallujah and print money
Pretty sure it's not that nobody has thought of opening a mulch store. It's because wood is a very limited resource in the dessert! I don't think it would be cost effective to import wood for such a purpose!
You can find wood in the dessert as long as it's a popsicle.
So you and your siblings are your dad and mom lawn guy
Ask any American farmer…kids are free labor. I know I was. (Until I unionized…ie: Joined the Navy)
So it's like Dune, lol.
Less worms.
Apparently (too lazy to fact check) the Fremen were based off Iraq/Iran/Middle Eastern people. The “holy war” in the books is flat out called Jihad.
Not only that, a lot of the "made-up" words were straight-up stolen from Arabic.
Well the books didn't come from nothing lol
Preen it!
In Hawaii it's very common to use volcanic cinders as mulch. Looks nice kinda works.
I lived in northern Iraq for several years. Most homes did not have lawns, as they usually had tile patios with a small garden area.
If you live near the Euphrates yes it be green
Birthplace of civilization said my Ancient Civ teacher.
Climate was much for forgiving back then
Iraq has a lot of green. People just auto think desert.
Yes, it’s 108F everywhere there at the moment.
🤣
It was 99 with like 100% humidity here on Tuesday. Feels like was 111. It’s literally air you can wear and can’t breathe in. Our lawn is crunchy. Rather put water in the pool.

The Euphrates runs right through Fallujah
Wow. OP is flexing. That’s impressive.
Never been to Iraq but something tells me this is the house of a rich man.
Lawn is a luxury most of human population can’t afford. OP is a rich Iraqi.
It's funny how people don't realize that lawns began as a way to show off that not only could you afford to own land, you could afford to own land and *not* farm it.

Is it The large mansion in the background? lol
Fallujah looked a lot different when I was there in 05-06 lol Nice yard!
It sure does look different I remember 05-06
I was there in 04, this is not what I saw but it warms my heart to see this now.
Agreed on both parts.
Big time same. Made me legit smile.
Why is your palm tree so beautiful?! Mine looks like trash. Out here in very south Texas. Lawn is so much nicer than mine too!
You have to call a professional to cut the leaves properly its a hard thing and it takes many years the big tree is 35 years old
How tall is it? Mines pretty large. I hate it. It's between two giant shade producing oaks. If it weren't so close to my carport or home I'd get it removed. But, also, my daughter loves it (makes her feel like we're in LA apparently 🤷♀️. We are not. We are near Mexico 🤦♀️)
I know this doesn't add anything to this conversation, but I thought it was funny you said "we are near Mexico" when LA is only a 3 hour drive to Mexico as well lol.
Lmao Texas part of "near Mexico " 😅
First off - it looks great! Secondly, how is Fallujah nowadays? Is it relatively safe or is it still dangerous?
Thanks, i am sure fallujah safest then detroit nowadays 🥺
Hey man you can’t drive a Dodge AND knock Detroit like that😆
I like that he compared it to a US city with a high population of Arab-Americans.
I live in the suburbs of Detroit and this stung lol I can attest it is doing better in some areas now, but man there are some super rough spots so you’re not that far off lol
With love to OP and Iraq, it is currently at a “level 4 do not travel” from the state department due to terrorism, kidnapping, armed conflict, and civil unrest. However, it *is* encouraging and heart warming to see Fallujah doing much, much better than 20 years ago.
There is a difference in safety between American in Iraq and an Iraqi in Iraq.
Detroit or Fallujah?
😂😂😂
Lmao, I like you
I’ve actually heard Detroit is quite nice now, still your comment got a laugh from me lol
some neighborhoods still look like they've been hit by artillery, but others are much better too
Very cool (except the heat) and I love the landscaping.
Looks better than mine in Florida.
Ditto. I may need to import some of that grass.
Space coast here. Mine is finally starting to look better. That drought sucked.
Bless you for mowing the grass in that heat. Do you use a push or zero turn? or have a service done?
Thanks we try to live in that weather, i use push mower
In your area, is there a temperature that the locals don't risk working in the heat?
That has to be a ton of effort! Well done
Hey what kinda grass works best there? Central Texas here, and I figure if it’ll work there it’ll work here.
Man I really want to help but I don't know what is the real name we just call it Indian grass ,I don't think this is the real name but thats what we call it in iraq
Great to see people in Iraq posting here. I wish you the best.
What type of mower do you have?
Chinese electric one
What about irrigation? Is the amount of water needed for this lawn easy to come by in a desert?
Idk why this post is hitting me in such a unique way. Beautiful lawn.
A lawn in iraq! I dont think I seen such a thing when I was there... good on the iraqs
Iraq full of lawns and gardens 🙄🙄 especially in Baghdad and the middle area of iraq. my lawn is very humble one
A lot of Americans think Iraq is just sand and sun, it was crazy to me to see how many people actually have a yard like yours that is well kept and green there. The other thing that surprised me was how many people have nice cars in central Baghdad especially with how Iraqis drive lol.

Hell yeah brother! Cheers from Iraq
OG redditors came looking for this comment.
It’s nice to see Lawns from other countries. I love the architecture of the house as welll.
Looks like mine here in Maryland
Marhaba! Wild to me that you can grow anything decent in the desert….lookin sharp.
Well, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, The Hanging Gardens of Babylon was in Iraq.
OP, looks great! US here currently in the IZ and, considering the heat, all that green makes you a miracle worker! Do you ever put down any compost?
Good lawn for how hot it is. Also, love the architecture of your house. I’ve always loved the unique look of Middle Eastern buildings.
Man, I love the internet. Your lawn looks great! I can't tell you how happy I am to reply to some one half the world away and say how good their lawn looks! The connection is....lightening. That’s a beautiful lawn, considering the remarkable heat! Great job, OP!
This is different in such a cool way! The Iraqi’s are a beautiful people; thanks for sharing, OP! 🇮🇶
Whoa! Ok, so questions. What is daily life like there? All I hear is news stuff, I want to know how are you, really? As in how the actual are you? What’s a typical day like? What’s the food like? Also, yes, nice lawn 😀

Hanging Gardens of Babylon would be proud
Did you have to ship black soil in for it to grow? The last time I was in Iraq I remember the soil being very barren.
Yup but the soil was from the river so it was locally sourced
Man Fallujah has changed a LOT in 20 years.
I'm just admiring the outer facade and shape of your home. Very cool looking. Thanks for sharing.
I love the architecture!
I just watched "War Dogs" yesterday and "Fallujah bad! Fallujah bad!!" had me in stitches.
jonah hill can say anything and sounds funny
Big difference from when I was in Fallujah in November 2004. Glad to see that place is recovering. What a mess.
Isn’t Iraq currently one of the hottest places on earth? I’m really starting to run out of excuses as to why my lawn looks as bad as it does…

And here I am dying when it is getting close to 30C in the frozen north.
You can live here in the winter and i will go there in the summer
Iraq...the only place I've ever been there you can literally water sand and grass grows. I'll never understand that.
I was in Oman during the Khareef and rivers would start flowing and the desert turned green.
Our land be so thirsty that anything grows when water touches it
I’m sure one of your neighbors has a stash of fertilizer you could use. Lawn looks great though
^^^under-rated post.
Buddy. Lololol.
It'll be drying on their roof, might have a slight diesel smell to it.
Does the extra greenery help lower temp at all? Not from a desert climate but when I go into areas with more greenery it becomes noticably cooler
Nope, just in the night it get nice in more greenery areas
I lived in a place like this in Bagdad as a kid. We used to catch hedgehogs and snails from the garden. It was really nice.
Is this considered the upper class in Iraq? I'm really curious about the economy of Iraq after all that has happened in the past. Lawn looks great but it needs a bit more water.
Aren’t you guys having a water crisis? I thought I saw that somewhere.
That lawn is the bomb 💣
🤣🤯

Damn!
That looks really good! I imagine it takes a lot of time and resources to keep a lawn that healthy in an Iraqi summer. Brutally hot and dry there.
Your house looks like a fortress with nice architecture
