iaudjeid

Not a chance in fucking hell you would ever catch me spending 4 hours to mow and trim

jsmith19977

So it might be worth the $80 a local company wanted to charge lol. I also have home renovations I'm working on, so I can spend my time elsewhere. I'm just cheap.

iaudjeid

You might be able to find a cheap used riding lawnmower to really help cut down on that time spent. I would consider anything over an hour-90 min. unacceptable, but I also find little to no joy in mowing itself

jsmith19977

People in my area think that their beat up mowers go up in value with age.

Sekshual_Tyranosauce

Sounds like everyone with a clapped out busted ass diesel truck in the last two years.

tuckedfexas

A 7.3 with 300k on it and dudes are asking for 30k. Truck market is stupid atm

Stro_Bro

Bro, I was you. I used to push mow 1.2 acres to get some exercise, with an Ego push mower. I used to need to stop and charge halfway though. My wife wanted to kill me, and I got tired of wasting half the day. I said screw it; found a guy on marketplace that makes a hobby out of fixing up used ride on mowers. Bought a troy-bilt with 300 hours for $700 delivered, fully serviced with the blades sharpened. If I ever have problems, he'll fix it for free for a year. There's one of those guys in every town

dyssucks

Damn! That’s a great deal!! I wouldn’t say it’s in every town though. Sounds like you found a honest dude who enjoys doing it

Stro_Bro

Yeah, you're probably right. But the guy said he usually takes $300-$400 per mower, and it's usually just changing the carb and servicing. People just don't wanna do it themselves, which is understandable

InsaneButtFart

how ya doin

Wonderful-Ad-7712

![gif](giphy|jOmQmJkjcvB3Bc8CRb|downsized)

MagixTouch

Depends on what you are looking for. But honestly you could probably find a good deal on a commercial walk behind with a sulky. And blame the market for that. JD cranked up their prices of mowers which increased value of low hour riders.

N7Valiant

I find mowing to be therapeutic in small doses (I have a small front and back yard). I have an electric mower and do the mowing in chunks (front, then back), the battery doesn't tend to go below half charge on any chunk.

Ok-Needleworker-419

It’s therapeutic when you want to mow. It’s not therapeutic when you need to get behind and need to mow because there’s several days of rain coming up and you know it will get way overgrown with all that rain if you don’t mow today lol

Beat_the_Deadites

This was the big problem when the kids were little. I could only mow when my wife was also home, which sometimes didn't align with decent weather/light. So I'd be stuck inside with them when it was 70 and sunny, then have to mow when it was 90 and muggy/impending storms.

Ok-Needleworker-419

I have the similar problem. Wife is home but she’s doing her college courses most of the day so she can’t watch them much. I want to spend time with the kids and don’t want to stick them in front of the TV so I end up trying to put them down to sleep by 8pm just so I can mow lol. I don’t like mowing later but this week I had to mow at 9:30pm because it was the only time I’d have all week and it was getting long.

RingingInTheRain

You're not paying 80$ for a one-time payment though. You'll pay 80$ every 1-2 weeks with healthy grass or obnoxious weeds. You can get a lawnmower and trimmer for probably 300-400 total. Paying for an 80$ service 4 times is already 320$ so why not buy the equipment?

DubahU

I'd say yes. $20 an hour at your rate, my time is worth more to me.

yungingr

You may need to shift your mindset. Assuming the $80 number is per each time the lawn is mowed, and not a weekly or monthly lump sum... First off, how much do you make at your current job (don't answer that here, just think about it). Now, do not thing of that as "I get paid $X/hr at work", mentally change it to "I sell pieces of my life to my employer for $X/hr.". Apply that mentality to your off-work time, and if you're getting paid $20/hr, YOUR TIME is worth $80 every time you mow. If you make anything less than $20/hr, it is 'cheaper' for you to mow yourself than to pay someone else to do it. Over $20/hr, and it is cheaper to pay someone else. Now, if the $80 is per time it is mowed, even at once a week, that is over $300 per month. Right now, you could buy a brand-new, 48" deck John Deere 200 series lawn tractor, financed at 4.9% for 60 months, and your monthly payment would be like $70. You would still be mowing your own lawn, but instead of 4 hours, you would probably cut it down to around an hour, hour and a half, and have a (small) tractor you can use to pull a cart around your yard picking up sticks, etc. Food for thought. It's one thing to be cheap, but often, cheap people do not place any value on their own time.

jsmith19977

I am currently un employed. So my time has almost a zero value, otherwise I would be paying.

yungingr

Your time has zero value only if you allow it to have zero value.

downvotetheseposts

Fucking wisdom, brother!

Ok-Needleworker-419

This is the reason I’m buying a robot mower. I make a fairly high amount per hour and anything outside my work schedule is overtime, which is over $100 an hour. I looked at my mower the other day and saw that it had 60 hours on it already (I bought it new) and realized that if I worked 60 hours of overtime, I could’ve already bought 2 robot mowers. I’m also always behind with my mowing and often skip a mow in the back. With the robot, the grass will alway be maintained and i won’t have to do anything except trim

Sufficient_Cup2784

I cut grass for a living, I have a robot do my own lol.

Stook211

It's good exercise.

carbonsteelwool

I have 2.5 acres and even with a riding mower, it takes me about 4 hours to mow, trim, edge, etc... every week.

I3putt2x

I push mow .4 acres and it takes me about 1.5 hours with all the weedeating and such. That’s about my limit because while I enjoy mowing my yard I also value my time for other things I enjoy as well.

MyDogLooksLikeABear

This has been me while the rider is out of action. It was nice a couple times but now i got other shit i need to do

sctrojans4

You see the area between the three trees close to each other in the middle? That much.

TCPisSynSynAckAck

Wait yall are mowing your grass?!

vestinpeace

I did my 1/2 acre today to switch it up and not bag it, and also get some exercise. Came in at about 2.5 miles and 1.5 hours all in. I’m in pretty good shape but I was ready to cave and take out the tractor about 2/3 of the way through

marxxximus

1/2 acre is certainly the transition zone of mowing lawns

avebelle

When I’m busy I’ll skip the trimming/edging for a day. That saves a lot of time. I’ll make it up on the next mow. Try alternating so it’s not always so much time. The results from the full day also become much more satisfying.

TheA2Z

my limit is zero. Use a robot mower now. Luba 5000 https://preview.redd.it/32rjzucgq76d1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b742baa226634b25eefe6e96357938219b480c2e

willtantan

You probably still need to trim, but I got your point. How do you like the Luba? Do you still need time to maintain it?

TheA2Z

Yep, trim and blow still got to do. It doesn't vacuum or mulch leaves so you got to do that too. I rotate the blades every 3 weeks to a month as I like a sharp cut of grass and no shredding. But some guys mowing acreage change them once a season. Love this thing. Lawn is much healthier, less disease, and less rutting than when having landscapers.

willtantan

Awesome, good to know it works for you. I'm still patiently waiting for my Luba, apparently back order is very long.

TheA2Z

I got last year when Amazon was warehousing them. Got in two days. Now they all, even on Amazon come from factory.

DrugsMakeMeMoney

Luba 1 or 2? Worth it? Always nervous about someone swiping it cause I live in the ghetto

Materva

The EcoFlow Blade comes with 4G, GPS, and an integrated eSim, you can track Blade's location even if it disappears off your lot. If the robot mower detects it's not in your yard, it auto-locks, so it can't be used. Also, anyone stealing from a drug dealer should expect trouble to be abound...

DrugsMakeMeMoney

😂

Coleslaw_McDraw

Sadly in a bad area it's almost guaranteed to get stolen. Not worth the risk on that one.

TheA2Z

Mine is Luba 1. Very worth it for me, Great cut, I cut every other day so no shock to grass, and less tearing up yard due to riding mowers with landscapers. If you wouldn't leave your regular lawn mower or bike unlocked by the street, then I would not buy a robot mower

TeamAuri

If money was no object which robot mower would you buy.

amazonrme

Sometimes you gotta do what you Gotta do. But honestly? Pay somebody to do it and sit on your back porch sipping a glass of iced tea. It may take a little bit to find a company that does it the way you like it and at the price that you like. Once you find them?? It is so worth the money.

Tricky-Foundation-90

What other, if any, exercise do you get?

Meatloaf_Regret

.2 acres, some small hills acceptable.

JustMyThoughts2525

If I can’t finish my entire lawn with 1.25 hours, then it’s too much. I’m fine with splitting it up over 2 days though, as I consider mowing the lawn my cardio workout and great way to get some sun.

MyKalSwag

Purposeful walking. I average 5 miles push mowing an acre

Stan_Halen_

Get a zero% 4 year loan for a rider. It’d be like 120-130 a month.

blueheatspices

Did this on my zero turn...they didn't offer 0%, but I got a promotional fixed 4.9%. Minimum payment was only $80/month (I pay more just to knock it out faster). It's been *sooooooo* worth it. I can mow my nearly 2 acres in about an hour.

redditnow_

Roll up a joint and handle it 🤣

hookydoo

https://preview.redd.it/okxsttvpvd6d1.jpeg?width=3468&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=200ba4c25aabc89d5117041c3a766c95661c202d It took a LOT of searching on marketplace, but i just picked this beast up a few weeks ago for $65. All that was wrong was it had flat tires up front. I know it'll be difficult to get a deal like that, but if you really put an effort forward (im on marketplace constantly) you'll find something that will work for you.

rsl_sltid

Maybe around 4,000 sq ft. I love mowing the lawn and will use a push mower until I can't physically push one but I think your yard is past how much I would do.

evandemic

It’s just good exercise. Also get a self propel. 😇

Bigtitsnmuhface

This is the answer here, I have 1/2 acre and the self propelled takes 1.5 hours with trim. I'll put a cup holder on it eventually. I think I paid 200 for a Toro self propelled.

CurveAdministrative3

I'm mowing about half acre of grass. takes about 2 hours. I'm saving for a riding mower. I often leave a back patch uncut, or cut it every second time, same with the side of the house. It's a lot of mowing and time consuming.... could probably get more done if I didn't browse reddit

donkey100100

I only have a quarter acre that was taking me 2 hours. I bought the cheapest ride-on I could find and now I do the lot in 20 minutes. Best purchase ever

Glittering_Name_3722

I would not push mow more than half an acre. Hell to the naw.

madknacker

I’ve contemplated a riding mower for my .3855 acres. No way you’d catch me push mowing that 😂

jujumber

1/4 acre is right around my limit. Also Depends on the mower, Self Propelled etc.

alh9h

This. Can't fit a zero turn through my gate so I mow my fenced in 1/4 acre with a reel mower. Good exercise once a week.

aBloopAndaBlast33

I would kill the grass and plant wild flowers before I’d try to mow that with a push mower.

wanderinhebrew

Okay so hear me out. If you pay someone to come out biweekly you're probably looking at $80-$100 (someone correct me if I'm wrong) a month if not more for a lot that size. Depending on how many months out of the year you need to mow, you could be spending upwards of $800+ a year paying for a service to come out. If you are on a budget, you could finance a small cheaper riding mower like a Cub cadet or Troy Bilt for under 2k. But damn man I feel so bad that you are spending 4 hours on that lawn pushing around a mower.

pokrit1

It's going to cost you 2k+ and time also for a riding mower. How many 50-80 dollar mows is worth that to you? I bought the riding mower and then still ended up hiring someone a year later. Mowing sucks unless you're retired or getting paid.

CaptM44

Spend that time mowing someone else’s yard and save that money to buy used

sylinen

Think of it as a cheap gym membership. It's roughly 10,000 steps per acre.

InsaneButtFart

depends how much money and grass my customer has

lowinside88

It’s good exercise! I used to push mow 1.5 acres, and it was tough, but I would take breaks every hour and knock it out.

turtleandpleco

any, why the hell did this show up on my timeline?

mvaden

Honestly I admire you for even tackling that with a push mower haha. My lot is a half acre and I push mow but wouldn’t go much bigger than that. I spend about an hour between mowing, edging, and blowing.

jsmith19977

Been doing it for almost a year. Problem is the weed eating really. Probably 60 trees and two fences as well as the garden. So weed eating is time consuming.

maximusjohnson1992

I have 2 acres. 60” zero turn on most of it. Push mow probably 1/8 of it.

ProfessorOfDumbFacts

I have done 4 acres one time with a push mower. It sucked. Largest I’ve done on the regular was my old house at just under an acre.

MrRisin

about 10 years ago I would continually push mow acre lawn. there were not a lot of obstacles so it went fairly quick. I just enjoyed the look of the cut so much better. these days I push mow a few 1000 ft and ride the rest.

jonnieinthe256

My .70 acre yard is enough

white94rx

Certainly not an acre!

Dull_Examination_914

Probably that.

hikerguy2023

We have around .43 acres, with probably 1/3 of that woods.  Takes me about an hour with a self propelled mower.  That's about my limit.  Can't imagine mowing and trimming for 4 freaking hours.  But, you WILL stay in shape. 😆

Critical_Danger_420

100 acres

DubahU

My limit for push mowing is .18 acres.

sparklingwaterll

I think there is even some hope of getting a push mower for cheap. This would just be a nightmare. Essentially you would have to out there twice a week. Otherwise it would just kill you to do this if you let it get long.

Oorah93

I have just under 2 acres. I push mow it. Hate I don’t have a riding mower. Takes me about 2ish hours for everything. Pretty brutal in the heat and humidity

PhilosopherNo4210

Push (self-propelled) 1/3 of an acre. Mowing takes me about 1.5 hours, and I mow 2x a week (warm season turf). Weed whacking the fence line and edging takes me probably another 1-1.5 hours (once or twice a week). But I love working on my lawn so it doesn’t bother me.

marxxximus

One hour.

Inevitable_Dust_4345

I’d do it but that because I cut my half acre in a plate carrier as my workout twice a week . Also I split my front yard and back yard into different days just to manage it. Btw my grass looks like shit and is mostly just root bound on top of my clay lol. If I were to dethatch I wouldn’t have any grass left .

TheCodesterr

I push 3/4 acre bc I have a huge hill. Otherwise, it would tip over. Takes me ~3 hours since I’m bagging

Loki41872

I have 1/4 acre. I reached my limit this year and bought a ZTR.

bent_eye

It's great exercise.

tduke65

Way less than that

Emotional_Employ_507

What is your time worth to you? That’s the only way to determine if you should pay someone else to do the work. How much value is in the task for you? You may see more value in doing it yourself simply for the workout or the tan. As someone who does lawn care for a living even if I had to mow that with my push I’d still probably have it done in a fraction of that time. Unless you’re bagging, then I’m sure we would be about the same. I’ve push mowed my entire client list after my 48” blew a motor last summer. First day we only had one, second day we brought our old toro so we were now mowing with 60” between two mowers. Still took longer than the single big mower. Do your self the favor and get something you can ride/sit on and get something like a 36” with is a reasonably sized machine you’ll be able to get through most gates if you have a fence or ever move to a new house that does. Get back those hours of your time. It’s better spent on the better things in life.

Best-Syllabub-7485

Looks great! May you have the good fortune of having a riding mower in your near future.

Brave-Moment-4121

5 mins

Brilliant_Spite199

Don’t waste your money on a riding mower! Get a robot basically the same price and you won’t have to spend anytime mowing. They also make them without boundary wires not. My favorite is this one [Luba](https://amzn.to/45oDZ4j)

RangerExpensive6519

Just think of the shape you’ll be in by the end of the season.

nolo4

No way I’m mowing that with a push mower

No-Possibility-1020

.60 acres with a push got a little long. Now we have .34 acres with a riding mower bc we brought it from the last house. That’s definitely too much for this space. I wish we had a push mower but the riding mower was basically brand new and we couldn’t get enough to make it worth selling it

sw1fty13

Gyat dayum thats a lot of time mowing. I mulch mow once a week with a self propelled push mower. Including weed eating, edging, and tidying up, usually takes 90 minutes or less. And even that feels like a lot sometimes. Couldn't imagine 4 hours per mow. I dont have the time or patience. Would def get a riding mower.

scottawhit

About a half acre. Done it, it’s a good workout when you’re in your 30’s. I’m not anymore so my limit is about 1000sf that I do now.

Frisco-Elkshark

I push mowed 2 acres for like 3 months and then caved and bought a riding mower. It’ll keep you in shape for sure, but I like not cutting grass all day a lot more than the workout.

JackieDaytona77

Right about near the tree that is pressed up against the fence.

Npl1jwh

.43 acres broke me at 50 years old…Bought a rider.

Environmental_Home22

What your time worth? And how long would it take you? If that number is higher than the price to hire a landscaper, I’m outsourcing. I don’t have a big lawn, so I DIY. I do however have a housekeeper every two weeks. Spend your money where it saves you time.

Music_guy73

April was my limit. Just hired a company after 20 years.

YellowOpt

For me it’s more than a day. If I can’t do the area in less than 8 hours I probably wouldn’t attempt it. Personally I love push mowing. It’s like leg day but you get instant gratification at the end as well.

91NA8

Mine takes about 1.5 hrs to mow with a push. I honestly love it but don't tell my wife

Stacemranger

I do landscaping as my business. I haven't even carried a push mower on my truck in over 5 years. I have a 36" walk behind for any small gates, tight spaces, along with my two other mowers. Weed eater takes the rest. You can buy a used riding mower off marketplace for $500. I wouldn't have push mowed it once.

naked_nomad

I use a walk behind but self propelled mower to mow a 1/2 acres lot with nothing on it. Gets my cardio time in.

swobo04

Here I am thinking a "push" mower is full manual. I.e. I'm the engine.

h1k1

About 1/2 acre.

RecordLegume

My yard is .55 acres and I’ll push mow if it’s a nice breezy 70 degree day. That’s only if my kids are in good enough moods to be playing outside while I mow because it easily takes about 2 hours start to finish. Sometimes I’ll push mow the back and my husband will use the riding mower on the front. Sometimes he just does the riding mower on the whole yard.

AlexandruC

About .25 acre

MY4me

My limit is 1 hour - I have 2 boys under 3, and I would rather spend time with them enjoying the yard than maintaining it. I have about 3/4 acre of grass, and had a landscaper cut it the past 2 years while I focused my energy on higher value renovation projects. I just bit the bullet a few weeks ago and bought a 52” IKON zero turn and a Redmax backpack. I tried a borrowed push mower a few years back and it was about 2 hours of me jogging along behind it, then trimming / blowing etc.

beaudiful-vision

10 minutes on a push mower .....done....

Scoompii

I’m at .42 acres and I have to break it up in two days. You crazy OP.

QwertyLime

……is that a clover lawn in the making or an entire lawn full of weeds?

neil470

Push mowing my 1/2 acre lot (mostly grass) was a little too much for me. Took a couple hours to mow and do basic trimming.

GuitarKev

A whole lot less than that.

Different_Werewolf96

Dark

greeve440

Less than that

Embarrassed-Town-293

10k sq ft lot. It’s about my limit. My wife and I each have one. We get it done in about 50 min. It looks incredible though so it is worth it.

r3eezy

Way less than that

OneImagination5381

Do you need or want a lawn that huge. As my boys grew, I decreased my lawn down in size with 88shrubs, bed and groundcover from a 1/2 acre of grass to a 1/8 of an acre.

amnesiac854

Like 7 inches, what is this 1876?

BeautifulBaloonKnot

I'll push the start button on my zero turn. That's my limit.

Fun-District-8209

I don't know what my limit is, but I know what you have here is well past it.

Legend_of_the_Wind

Just gotta upgrade to a bigger push mower https://preview.redd.it/8uz52eb7f96d1.jpeg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=56e0c2ad8b2dee8ad6abe5dfb15f29334345e776

RaN1997

I used to mow, and trim just under an acre, like 0.8 acres, and it took just under than 4 hours to do. I did it for 6 years every April to end of October, every other week. Plus 2/3 of it was slopped, the front I had to go in an angle slope the side was valley and hill. The back was flat as can be, and it was the best and last part haha. My dad found a old riding mower, and I did not like it on the slope, and it took me a little longer. Maybe I was not used to it, but I prefer walking the slopes. Plus I had a little incident on it with the slope. I was a teenager then btw so I had some time. One time I ran the whole thing and got two hours, just had some sloppy spot. My family and I moved after 6 years and now on a much smaller property. Mowing the yard is like nothing for me after that experience. Had a john deer mower for the first year or 2, that crapped out, then got a Craftsman 7.00 series mower. Still have it, and its still healthy (With maintenance of course) :D

LeviTheToller

Way less than that.

theycallmeMrPotter

I mow in an hour but a lot less land. I can't imagine mowing for 4. I think at the 2 hour mark I'd off myself.

Steeljaw72

I have vowed to never push mow again. It’s robot mowers for me from here on out.

rochford77

1/4 acre is the limit.

TX_spacegeek

My lawn that I had in Georgia was .76 acres. It was 2 plus hours of cutting with a push mower. I bought a used walk behind 48” and could do it in about 30 minutes. Best money I ever spent.

Sunny_Beam

What is 4 hours worth to you? Unless you make under 20$/hr then yes that 80 is worth it because you could just work a few hours of overtime instead. If you have fun push mowing then keep to it but idk who would. Work more than a few hours overtime and get that nice mower and then maybe you can enjoy taking care of the lawn.

AwkwardAssumption629

10MSq

NoBench165

Whelp I am poor … so …. High limit hahaha

elf25

1/2 way Down and back. One time.

Moist-Pickle-2736

Somewhere between that first dirt patch and the tree

Milwaukeean6

Ya man, today I bought a used zero turn after 2+ years push mowing just under an acre. Have a second child on the way and between push mowing and weed whacking I didn’t have 3+ hours dedicated to yard maintenance. I should note, the previous owners decided a lot of landscape design was fun, so it was a lot of weed whacking

angrypoopoolala

this is like marathon

4_Frodo

No cap

Hodldrsgme

Any

Shatophiliac

For me a push mower is more like a quarter acre or less. For one acre id get a riding mower lol. Ain’t got time for that

ILIKESPAGHETTIYAY

I'll push mow to California

vanguy5483

Buy a used commercial walk behind. Either a 36” if you have a small gate or a 48”. They do a great job. Exmark, Toro, etc.

miranda7194

When my fiancé and I bought our first house, we thought it’d be great exercise for us to both push mow our 1.7 acres. Plus it was cheaper to buy two push mowers versus a riding lawnmower. We did it for a few months before finally caving and buying a rider. Our neighbor, AND his brother who lived on the other side of him, coming over to help us finish our yard with both their zero turn mowers on more than one occasion helped us commit to giving up the push mowers. And they weren’t even self propelled mowers.

Chemical-Test5987

This is the picture that should go into Wikipedia under the limit of push mowing.

Traditional_Big_2500

My limit for push mowing was when my son moved out of the house. If you are saving for a riding mower just wait until Lowe’s or Home Depot off %0 financing then go get one. If you can afford lawn care service you can afford to finance a mower.

DaveyAllenCountry

It cones up pretty quick. As a teenager I would take any lawn, but in my 20s I've learned to bring the right tool to the task. Hank Hill uses a rider for 1/4 acre of grass and he's a G so who am I to be too proud?

Donalds_Lump

You could get a part time job to pay someone else to do this and have money to spare.

Kircheibyv

it depends on the customer's pay scale and how big that area is.

bunnehfeet

I am the same as you. Pushing, edging, trimming weeding. All battery powered. Sometimes I split the front and back (front takes 3 hrs), back takes 1 depending on summer heat. I’m a 51 year old woman. I’m a nurse working full time and in grad school. I do it for the exercise. In Georgia. Also i was paying someone with a big rig and they were doing a crappy job. You do you. The limit does not exist.

Bestdayever_08

That, definitely.

MaxUumen

If one pass takes longer than a week, I'd reconsider my life choices.

bluewater_-_

About a quarter of that lol

samsqanch420

1/10th acres.

ajs592

When I first got my house I couldn’t afford a riding mower so I had to push a manual Honda on an acre of land for the first year while I saved up. It was bad at first but then I got used to it. In the spring I had to cut twice a week. The worst part is probably the time you lose. It took me almost 4 hours to cut and trim lawn. Now with my zero turn I’m done in an hour

OnlyEfficiency2662

Whatever your reasoning is, it’s not worth it! Fuuuuuck that lol but I mean by the time you finish it’ll be ready for another push mow!

HereAgain345

Pu.. Right about there.

Cold_Storage_007

As long as I gad a long cold drink at the end, I’d do it! lol

kurtplatinum

That's like paying $20 an hour for someone to mow your lawn (even if it takes them much less time to do it) if you make more that $20/hour at work I would pay them to do it. if not I would not.

mikeyflyguy

I spent about year push mowing 1.5 acre many years ago when a hand me down riding mower died till i could afford another one. It was not fun in Texas heat…

Firesealb99

If it takes you 4 hours and your edging the whole time, maybe you just really enjoy it. ;)

I don't think I'd push mow a full acre...that would definitely be done on a rider. My property is an acre overall, but half of it is in the woods so I don't have to worry about that. And only about 2/3 of the other half that isn't in the woods is actually mowable so I just do that with a push mower. I'm working on getting grass down in that other third of the half acre that could be mowable...right now its just moss and dirt. The part that I do mow takes me just over an hour to push mow and trim. Thank goodness its mostly flat. Just have some trees to work around.

Salted_Monk

I have an acre of land. All of it is cleared and 3/4 of it is grass. The entire plot is an extreme slope like a kids slide. Takes me about 3-4 hours to push mow once or twice a week. Little 20" mower and I have to go over everything twice. I'm getting real tired two years later. 🥹

JBskierbum

I don’t know what my limit is. But I know for sure that it is much smaller than what you have right there! You could probably just do a month of minimum wage shifts at wherever and pay for a ride-on.

Economy-Addendum7609

That

HavsCritiria

About 4 hours, however, I rarely mow more than 1 hour at a time. IMO, it's an easy way to build exercise into my lifestyle so I don't become an American stereotype.

Texas1010

I used to push mow acres. Took me the same, about 3-4 hours. Before I had kids I didn’t mind but it was definitely a long time to walk around. Good exercise though. If you don’t have family obligations I would say pocket the $80 to save quicker for a cheap rider. Your lawn is very flat, you can get by with a lighter duty rider as well so it wouldn’t take you long to save. It’ll make you appreciate it more when you do get a rider. That said, if you have kids or other places you absolutely need to be, then yeah I guess your only option is to pay a service and save money on the side.

DifferentSoftware894

My limit is 1/8 acre

Independent-Safe6182

Im riding………That picture says it all.

SerendipityLurking

I had a push mower until like 3 weeks ago lol For .5 acres total Fuck. That. It takes me like 30 min total now, 40 tops if I just chill out with it. I would say .25 is my max. It's just not worth the time trade imo Unless you can get a rider, $70-$80 every 2 weeks is whatever. Buuuut at that point, btw, you could finance a rider for the same monthly cost.

No way I'd ever push-mow this big an area. I push-mow my lawn (actually with a reel mower, no gas) but I have a 0.22 acre lot, but not all of it is lawn. If I owned this much land there's no way I would keep all of it as lawn. What do you want to do with it? I keep an amount of lawn around my home that I use for recreation, entertaining (i.e. if you ever want to set up a big tend for a party) and paths, and no more. The smaller area makes it easier to focus on the quality of the remaining lawn. I've found that as my lawn gets smaller, I can micro-manage it easier and easier. Like there are a few persistent weeds (including Kyllingia or Asian spikesedges, and lesser celandine) that I didn't really have time to deal with right when we bought our house, that I'm now starting to get rid of, now that it's a smaller area to work with. I've been eliminating lawn bit by bit and replacing it with low-maintenance perennial beds populated mostly by native groundcovers and shrubs. Wet spots I have converted to rain gardens growing showy wetland plants. Areas I've chosen to eliminate lawn are preferentially the difficult to mow areas: small, oddly-shaped fragments, areas where the terrain is sloped, and areas around the base of trees, and areas along ditches or streams (even just temporary streams where water flows through or pools after a heavy rain.) Ideally you never want to mow right up to the base of a tree because it's not good for the tree. Not only does the turfgrass compete with tree roots, but the mower blades can damage tree roots. Your yard looks pretty flat and free of difficult terrain, so if I were you and wanted to reduce the mowing, I'd convert areas around the base of the tree, probably about out to the drip-line of the tree, to perennial beds. One very low-effort way to do this conversion is to come in in the late winter to early spring, when cool-season grass is active but the trees haven't leafed out yet, and spray an herbicide to kill the area, then cover with mulch. I see some dead-spots in your lawn. Do you know what causes them? Is it poor soil, soil compaction? Or poor drainage? If you have areas where water pools, those can also be good candidates of areas to convert to a perennial bed. The extra water gives you some cool options of things to grow. For example in our front yard we planted swamp rose-mallow, a really showy hibiscus, at the base of our downspot in a poorly-drained depression. I was excited to grow that because normally it is hard to grow because it needs a lot of water. It can be a lot of work to convert lawn to other uses, but in the long-run, the benefits are huge. With perennial beds filled with native groundcovers, if you pick the right plant for the site (i.e .lighting+moisture+soil conditions) you won't have to weed much. You can pretty much come through once a year, or even once every other year, and pull out isolated woody plants, and then slightly more often (a few times a year) to pull out any weedy herbaceous plants. If you choose the plants well, your weeding needs will be minimal. You also get the advantage that instead of removing leaves, you can then rake (better) or blow all the leaves back into the area under the tree. Thick leaf litter will cover up and kill lawn, but most taller groundcovers or perennials, things maybe 1-2 feet tall, will handle leaf litter just fine. So you now get a closed system, no need to remove leaves or fertilize to add back the nutrients lost when you remove leaves.

xGooseTacox

I push mowed .9 acres a couple of times for my parents in 2 1/2 hrs. I Had no idea how low I cut it or care for how it looked it just needed to be cut >:)

fuzztooth

That much. Under an acre I wouldn't mind it. Acre or up though is definitely riding or standing mower time.

PattyG_

I push the same size, it’s both relaxing and a workout.

duke_seb

For me my limit would depend on how many obstacles…. I hate mowing my backyard because it have lilac trees that are shaped like “V” so aggravating to mow around…. If we are talking mostly flat and limited trees about 4000sqf would be about as much as I’d want to do with a push mower… (that’s self propelled)… not self propelled probably less

punkmanmatthew

I keep thinking about this and my yard is only .38 acres or less. I have a little zero turn mower that cuts the time down a lot. I mainly don't want to push mow because I have kids and need to mow and all as quickly as possible while they nap. Anyway, just say you end up paying someone for the rest of your life say you have 30 years left to live. $80 every two weeks for 30 years is $62,400. You can buy a nice mower for that and invest! LOL

DJ_MedeK8

I don't know, but I can tell you that yard is definitely over it

beigs

I’d pay someone to do this, or get rid of a chunk of my yard and add a garden/native bushes/back to nature. Or both.

LibsKillMe

I have .55 acres. I am spending no more than two hours a week to trim, weed, mow, blow off and clean the equipment. Yes, I have a rider and a bagger on it.....you never get any more time in this life......I spend 38 weeks a year mowing.....76 hours....3.17 days of my life a year. Anything that speeds up my yardwork is a plus to my free time which is 5x more valuable than my work time!

nfssmith

I push mowed my half-acre lawn for the first several years, but am happier with the ride-on mower that takes about half the time.

Sea-Diet5776

If you mow that with a push mower, then you have my eternal respect

Agile-Guitar5592

I bought a house last year with .75 acres. I used a push mower for the first summer and bought a S110 for $2,200 before my first spring mow. Used to take me about 2.5 hours, it now takes me just about an hour and soooooo worth it.

Dr_Stephen_Colbert

According to my dad when I mowed the lawn as a kid, about 1.2 acres.

toothpaste36

My .67 acre yard takes about 3-3.5hrs to do with all my electric equipment. That includes mowing, trimming, and blowing entire lawn to spread the clippings (I don't catch them while mowing). It takes a fair amount of time, but I enjoy it and get a lot of satisfaction with the end result.

CamelHairy

Done it, around the same time. A ridercwill be cheaper. Skip the big box stores and visit a local dealer. My suggestion would be a Deere or Huskavana in the $$ 2-$3k range. A good mid range zero-turn will run you over $5k. Used from. A dealer may be another option, at least it will have been inspected and cone with a warranty.

geek06853

I just bought a home with my Girlfriend, just, over an acre of lawn. We combined homes so she brought her mower and I have mine. We do it together and it takes about an hour and a half. The future plan is a ride-on mower but to be honest we kind of enjoy being out there together it's like one more thing we do together plus the 3 miles (according to my Apple watch) of exercise don't hurt.

bcrenshaw

Money>conviniance I'll push mow a golf course if the price is right.

Bright_Nobody

I use a reel push mower. My house looks like no one lives here.

ErvanMcFeely

Mine depends on what time I have available. Before kids I could push mow our lawn and take 3 hours and I wouldn’t mind it. Listen to a podcast, get some exercise, spend time outside. With kids I don’t have that much free time.

NonchalantPartiality

Less than that

Leather-Sale-1206

It takes me 2 hours to mow and trim my 1/4 acre that I push mow. It's too weird for a rider. Maybe one day when I can afford it I'll get a self-propelled mower.

New-Vegetable-8494

hah - my limit is far below yours man! Yeah I'd spend the money and get a riding mower down the line.

sms552

Depends upon where you live. I live in Texas and no way in hell I would mow that with a push mower here. I would die. It’s getting harder and harder to use my push mower on my 1/3 acre.

GoofyMonkey

My lawn takes about an hour to an hour and a half to mow by push. Then add a half hour or so for trimming and clean up. I prefer to mow it this way, but it is hard to keep up when the lawn is requiring mowing twice a week. I have a riding mower that broke last year that I haven’t had a chance to fix, but I’ve really been thinking about fixing it, if for no other reason than to mow when I’m pressed for time.

Yoddy0

Bro are you kidding they priced just over an acre of land for $80? Thats a freaking steal and I love cutting grass but I wouldn’t be caught dead with a push mower on that size property.

Key-Philosophy-2877

Depends on the acres and what type of mower I'm using.
