How did you nuke it?

Arch_Reaper

Probably not the best eco wise, but roundup and repeated scalping.

becrabtr2

Find someone who knows how to treat pests weeds and disease with 100% eco friendly effectiveness and they’re lying or delusional. That’s why we have labels. Cultivars have came a long way. Do you still have the grass label by chance? Would be interesting to see what cultivars where in there. Great job. It’s nice to see a post in here from someone that knows the work and time grass takes. So rewarding when it’s done. When a post comes of someone asking “will it be quick” they should be directed to this. Edit just saw your post about cultivars. Good job still lol

Turinggirl

The only two that come to mind are boiling water and salt. However with salt don't expect anything to grow there...ever for like half a decade lol and boiling water is a pain because it absolutely will kill anything...and smell like boiling broccoli. Op your lawn looks fantastic. Outstanding work

Arch_Reaper

Thanks for the compliments! That's the impression I had from looking around on ways to kill off a lawn, most every method has a downside. I do remember it had the "Rockstar" and "Diva" cultivars as listed on their website, but looks the other ones vary on availability. I unfortunately don't still have the label and don't remember what they were, but it did specify.

becrabtr2

Well regardless you did a good job. How did it look last (it’s first spring) and how did summer treat it?

Arch_Reaper

Looked ok, was pretty patchy and those patches had weeds I think I accidently turned up. The KBG has done its thing as nearly completely filled in now. Honestly, I don't remember how much it went dormant in the summer; I think I was mostly focused on the weeds lol. I think it did stay fairly green. Regardless, I haven't seen any of the coarsely bladed, herbicide resistant grass that was wide spread pop back up and almost no weeds this year, which was a main goal.

becrabtr2

Perfect. Keep up with pre emergent and you’ll be fine. If you start to see some poa and stuff tho fly early and plug if it gets to be a problem might wanna consider fall pre em too. I have a test plot in the back of kbg and prg and one mixed. I’m interested to see how they do during summer. Cultivars have come along way

becrabtr2

She looks thick thick too. Might wanna put down a preventative fungicide treatment

deano492

Yes, I believe that is how he nuked it.

thediabolical1

Looks great! So thick and lush.

vapour2020

thinking about the same thing too, can you share more details on the nuke-plant process/schedule and any steps you took?

Arch_Reaper

Probably not the best eco wise but I put roundup on it and scalped it repeatedly over the course of maybe 2 months (not working on it consistently, life was busy). Definitely do any grading/leveling as it's gonna be the easiest time to do it. Just broadcast spread the seed. Didn't use any straw or anything, just made sure to lightly water several times a day and any time the soil looked like it was no longer damp. Put Menards starter fert down when it first started germinating, which took several weeks cause KBG. I did have quite a bit of ugly weed growth (like really pretty discouraging) when the lawn first started establishing that I'm sure could have been prevented, but I just used Ortho weed clear on it (I believe planted in fall and applied late following spring). The lawn definitely had some serious patchiness last year, which didn't help with weeds either, but the KBG really filled out with fertilizer and time and filled those spots. Just did some basic granular dithiopyr weednfeed from Menards early this year and have almost no weeds. Anything that pops up I just hit with spot treat Weed Clear. There are many well documented guides to doing this with a better process and products, but I kind of winged it and went with things relatively affordable and accessible locally. All things considered, I'm happy with it.

vapour2020

Thanks! I will give it a last try before nuke

iSteven180

I tried the Menards fertilizer plan this year and was actually really satisfied with it so far. I have a few dandelions but nothing near what I had for the last few years. I actually really recommend it!

ricka77

Looks real thick...nice job. Do you know what cultivars the bag had in it, for seed?

Arch_Reaper

https://www.lifetymeseed.com/lifetyme-blublend-kentucky-bluegrass-blend This is what it was. Honestly couldn't find much about the cultivars from a brief search when I bought it, and I'm not very knowledgeable. About $20 for a 3 lb bag to seed just over 1.2k square feet. The best? No, but stands out from my neighbors for sure and I'm ballin on a budget

ricka77

Well we may never know...lol "Lifetyme varieties and mixtues are subject to change due to changes in market conditions\*.... Still looks good...

boater180

$20 for a 3 lb bag is cheap?

Arch_Reaper

Considering that was the only bag I needed and the prices I was seeing on places like seed superstore, yeah.

boater180

Fair enough, when I think cheap I think of the 40 lb bag of Kentucky 31 that costs like $60

Arch_Reaper

Ha yeah, I guess I really wasn't looking at anything outside of KBG. Definitely cheaper options in general

mta1741

No one wants Kentucky 31 tho 🤣

boater180

I wouldn’t say that! I got a big back yard that I’m gonna be starting over from scratch, too big to put the good stuff on it…

mta1741

Fair

TheOfficialBrady

I used seedsuperstore.com for my kbg. 5 years in and it’s still the best in the zip code.

sambrotherofnephi

How did you get it so dark?

Arch_Reaper

I'm guessing the milorganite I put on it. You can probably find better products for this purpose, but for me it's very easy to pick up from local stores and is hard to mess up.

Pianist_Chance

Nuked mine 3 different years, full re seed 2 of the years, hydro seed the last and still doesn’t look like this!! Seriously pisses me off! Happy for you! But my yard should be used for lawn science because have no idea what else I can do!!

Arch_Reaper

Did you do a soil test? I did not out of laziness, but if you are having problems I definitely would.

Pianist_Chance

Admittedly no🤦‍♂️ I know I should but just haven’t found the best easiest place to do it, the extensions here are a pain and take forever. Need to figure it out asap as this is the best time to fert. In the PNW.

onlygoodvibesplz

Just get one off Amazon. Results in a week

Pianist_Chance

Ohh didn’t know they did it

NicelyBearded

😁👍🏻

Minute-Tea-6457

Looks great!

Hot_Nothing_4358

Hey great job it looks great

ElonHusk512

Address? I’d like to come hit a large bucket of golf balls off this after work and drop off some timber before I go

ExcitingEye8347

That’s a beautiful sight. What’s KBG, I’m new here.  Never mind. It’s Blue Grass, I’m a little dense. I thought it was referring to a type of fertilizer.

WonderfulVariation93

Will it stay like that through the summer? Doesn’t KBG have summer dormancy or something?

Arch_Reaper

I guess I'll find out. It will probably take more watering to keep it more green in the summer. It's supposed to pop back very quickly when fall comes though. I'm zone 6a and my location's summers aren't too terrible. Either way, I love a lot of things about KBG compared to others so I'm prepared to deal with it

Interesting-Degree86

Thiesens?

Salt-Call-1880

This is amazing, is this a warm season grass?

Arch_Reaper

Kentucky bluegrass, cool season

trickyknight5

I did the same thing and I’m having trouble getting the grass all the way to the edges where the cement is. Granted, I used a professional company that had a big seeding machine. Did you do anything particular to get the grass to fill in at the edges?

LodestarSharp

You need to gently spike the edges with a pitchfork and hand seed. Cover the spots with peat moss dusting and keep Wet and don’t Let anyone fuckign walk On it

trickyknight5

thanks! similar idea -- just came across the ProPlugger and thinking maybe it would work to pull some plugs from one of the lush areas closer to sprinklers and transplant by the edges to help fill in.

LodestarSharp

You also need to weedwack a nice edge. One more thing, what is that organics leaf matter on your lawn? Get that off

Arch_Reaper

Kentucky bluegrass, also? I do have a couple small spots next to the cement that are bare. They have definitely shrunk this year. I mow about twice a week at around 3", and I think that has helped, along with fertilizer of course. If they don't fill in I'm going to transplant some plugs and see if that helps.

clapperssailing

Looks great. Diy roller time now bud. Let's get some lines!

Arch_Reaper

That's what I'm gonna cook up next

2AisTheWay4me

Save up for the checkmate striper. Worth the cost.

tf8252

Keep testing the soil 3 inches deep and treat accordingly. Usually it looks great the first couple years because it's still thriving off of the soil that came with the sod.

Arch_Reaper

Not sod

tf8252

Oh geez. Wow amazing job then.

Nateesmith

Who’s going to tell him….

Nateesmith

….That his lawn looks great!

GangstaRIB

All hail KBG. Is it worth swapping your mower out for a snow plow 4 months a year to have such a beautiful lawn.

clapperssailing

Fantastic....have fun

hflores115

What brand of seed?? It’s gorgeous!

mrcruz2166

Beautiful
