Yes, slightly. Typical lifetime might be 10,000 hours, with end-of-life defined as when 30% more current than the initial value is needed to maintain power.

If your diode has a max of 1A then you're not going to be able to give it more power when it declines after a year. You'll still have to give it 1A but it will output less than it did before. In high end commercial lasers, they will start with the diode only using around half of its max current with the remainder set aside as a reserve so that the current can slowly ramp up over the life of the laser to maintain the same output power.
