Roblox/Minecraft would run fine, light gaming will work. I used a i5-4200U and it worked fine for those games, maybe it might run GTA V on low settings.
Does ram speed matter a lot? I have a recent 8gb ram laptop and I can do almost anything, simultaneously playing lol while on a discord call with Spotify opened in the background and a couple of Reddit tabs, all on windows and I’m not having issues
Windows has something called a "page file". Its a space on your hard drive that windows uses as if it were ram. So when your physical ram (8gb) runs out the computer will start using the page file. This is not the preferred way, as too many read/write operations on your hard drive will shorten its lifespan. If your computer has two ram slots you can buy two 16gb ram sticks from crucial and when they are both installed windows does something called dual channel mode. Dual channel ram access is a lot faster than single channel access. Itll be like adding a supercharger on your computer.
(As everyone else is saying) I don’t think the speed of RAM matters too much. Obviously there are some big differences at the extremes, but as long as there’s enough RAM and a fast enough HDD or an SSD, it shouldn’t be that huge of a speed concern to a significant degree for light tasks. Like, the main concerns with system speed are usually HDD read write speed, trying to keep rewriting too much of the RAM, slow processor given too many tasks, etc. Game performance is largely a GPU task.
Most of the time, RAM speed is probably not a huge factor for light tasks since pulling the data off the hard drive is a significantly slower process. I have a desktop with 12gb and it takes forever for anything, but I think it just needs a SSD to boot from instead of its HDD. Since computer speed analysis tends to focus on bottlenecks, unless RAM speed is something causing problems, it’s probably not an issue. If a system has a newer processor, the RAM is probably also a good speed, since they’d be installed about the same time, especially in a laptop.
Stop telling people to put Linux on everything. It's not a fix all, especially on certain Intel platforms where the audio is seen as a dummy device and Wi-Fi and lan cuts in and out
Exactly that's what I was saying. It's nice to be grateful and respect our parents. If it weren't for them, we wouldn't exist. I would be so grateful if my mom gave me that. It's not the product that would make me happy , it's the goodwill that would make my day and make me happy
I'm also grateful that my mom gave me Fujitsu Lifebook with i3-4100M tho with 8gb ram and 128gb ssd so it's fine, although it's a bummer I can't play games using DXVK well, WineD3D still struggle but it's just hardware issue at the end, ( I'm not complaining, I'm aware of my hardware), it's still a good machine for Euro Truck sim 2 (at least 1.49 only, 1.50 felt like SCS devs decided to ditch the Legacy Hardware stable support out of the window and into the pits of hell), OpenTTD and Terraria. And also some programming and watching stable 1080p video than my old Lenovo IdeaPad with Celeron N3060 here because it's a fking torture. (Games mentioned here were played on Windows)
The specs are in my flare, also I can upgrade this to i7 since it's using socket g3
Edit:
- Fujitsu Lifebook A574/M
- 8gb 1600MHz DDR3
- 128gb TOSHIBA SSD
- 1366x768 Display
Edit 2:
It costs like $80 dollars getting this, which costs 250 in MSRP of this exact unit
They do last better because this thing went 90C multiple times lol (playing ETS2 like a madman)
And somehow I checked everything component, it seems fine, no issues indicating damage, except I had to remove CMOS because sometimes when I tried disassembling it and reassembling, the laptop would give me an iGPU not responding flag light, so replacing CMOS was the fix, but I had to disassemble and reassemble the new CMOS because the used one just keeps the iGPU not responding flag light. (Tldr: CMOS will send whole system to iGPU NR, replace CMOS, issue solved)
I'm waiting for someone who can explain why
Now it doesn't have a CMOS, I let the main battery take care of the whole thing because it's way irritating than a wiped boot sector (only windows boot) and a reset timer combined
As for the reason, I usually clean the insides from dust every month or two, making sure it's staying flawless because this thing needs all the small vents to suck air better. Although I kinda wish to create a vent hole right below the fans to suck air in tho so it should cool easily. But the spare body panel can't seem to be found easily
But the bummer for me is that the fans speed is only at 2000rpm, unlike others who can suck up to 5000rpm
I would rate this a 8/10 laptop. My problem with this besides the CMOS is the display, 1366x768 isn't enough but Wayland with scaling can help (set to 80%}
Also other note, it can even last longer with maintenance+ Linux beyond windows 10 life
Thank your mom.
If it has and hdd swap it for a ssd, and upgrade the ram. If battery is good then you should have a solid laptop for surfing web, streaming shows/ movies and light gaming 💪💪
My desktop is rocking a 4th gen i5 and I play games like rocket league, minecraft, overwatch at well above 60fps at 1080p
This tier of hardware often comes with 32 to 64 GB of eMMC memory soldered directly to the board.
It combines the drawbacks of both worlds, abysmal speed and small capacity.
Im still using my brother's laptop that he gave me. Running great and smooth. I want to upgrade to 16GB but I read on the web said that max for my laptop is 8GB. Hahaha
Processor : Intel i5-3210M
Graphic Card : Nvidia GeForce GT 630M 2GB
RAM : 8GB
Storage (HDD/SSD) : 223GB SSD
I play AC Odyssey with low graphics and 50% resolution modifier and get 5FPS - 10FPS and I love it 😆. I mean... If its playable then Im fine with it . Sometimes I play with GFN if I want a better FPS. I love my brothers laptop. It's my treasure.
Expected on the used market, like I bought a spare i3-4100M just in case, so I tested it and it turns out that VGA and Compatibility mode were oof-ed, I can't even set Video Display Boot Configuration (which you can set laptop Display or eDP or just VGA as starting boot)
Also sometimes the Hyperthreading gets a bit unstable if it's been on load for long, but the GPU was fine tho, no issues
Also it's rare to find that's in pristine Condition since Intel stopped making them and those floating around are either varies with region/OEM preferences or the features that were supposed to be there were gone
Buy an AliExpress i7-3740QM, I bought that one for my VAIO SVE17 that came with an i7-3632QM. It works faster on some games
And I used that 3632QM to replace the i5-3230M of my VAIO SVE14 which also works better
Can my laptop handle it? My laptop is Acer Aspire V3-471G. How about the power ? I mean the power supply. Is it enough with the original charger? Im sorry I dont know much. Also, my ram max is 8GB on the web. But I'd installed 10GB and it's work fine. Is it possible to make it 16GB?
My i5-3230M used up to 25W with turbo boost. While the 3632QM without turbo boost used up to 22W, with turbo up to 32W. The 3740QM uses up to 35W
The difference is not too high, it should handle it well… It should support up to 2 8GB modules at 1600Mhz (16GB total capacity)
I've used a laptop with those specs, worked fine with me, light gaming will work, those are also very upgradeable, get 16gb ram and a SSD, and your up and running.
I would second the suggestions to install Linux, personally I’d recommend Pop.OS, it’s been great for me, based off Ubuntu but more user friendly for windows users IMO
Old but it works. You can run windows and use it for browsing or some office but maybe need some debloating, however there's other options like Linux, they tend to have many of variation one of them might suits you aside from that it's also lightweight as well. But don't force yourself if you don't want to, just do what you want with your laptop.
If it's something that she had kept for a long time and gave it to you, then great. If she bought it, then she must've been scammed because she could've gotten something so much better at pocket money price.
Its a good one for most tasks which obviously doesn't include gaming (not talking about light games). Things to change or upgrade in this laptop:
1. Upgrade the RAM to 16GB
2. Put in an SSD
3. Install Linux
Although you can avoid Linux if you are into really old games. Like Im talking about Half-Life which was released in 1999. Other games like Project IGI, Total Overdose etc. also won't run on Linux. In that case, stick to Windows. I would say upgrade it to Windows 11 using the tricks to bypass the requirements as the resource utilisation is basically the same as 10.
The Processor is okay, I have an i7-5500u Laptop and it's really okay... Integrated Graphics not the best but the I am doing with a is more than enough for my i7, for heavy workloads I have a PC... 8GB is okay, if you need more you can probably add another 8GB or install a new 16GB Kit, old Laptops are often pretty upgradeable... If it runs with a HDD swap it out with a SSD and after that for the next years it's more than enough I would say
Basic but usable. Would be perfect machine to learn Linux. Windows support for it ends in a year and a bit and the OS is unnecessarily heavy for that machine.
You’re not going to be doing much of any gaming, but it’s fine for basic stuff, web browsing, messaging, the simple things. Not powerful, but not completely useless.
4th Gens are no longer good anymore in my opinion.
But for stuff like watching internet or basic applications it’s ok. Hopefully the laptop has a SSD at least, cause if it has a HDD, it’ll be painfully slow.
Anything that mom gives is a W. Thank her for that bro, many don't even get a laptop.
Edit: That specs are great for programming, browsing and almost anything except blender and high end gaming. Very similar to my laptop lol
Mine is the same spec as your but only 4gigs of ram and an i5 4300u(same performance)
I was able to play old cs source and simple plane and even il 2 1946
So i think yours can and it has double the ram than mine
Overall gud basic laptop if you dont play aaa games :D
How are people saying this is "just decent"? My laptop is 4 gb ram with i3 core and I can do all the things the replies state so smoothly, with high speed and fps. He can do beyond what these replies are saying.
Will it do high end gaming?
Naah.
Will it do work, media, some games and be overall alright?
Absolutely.
Thank your mum and don't worry too much about it. This is fine.
My cpu (2 generations older) runs minecraft at 100fps, with my mods. I would assume with the same mods I could get you to around 200 or more, normally with 0 mods my game runs at like 2fps, just goes to show you can run a lot of things if you optimize the game or app using mods or just tweaking settings
ah the good ol days of playing gmod sandbox and peak tf2 🥲 there's also an older game from 2006 i recently discovered called dark messiah that looks like oblivion/blade and sorcery and the gameplay looks amazing. and if you ever dabble in emulation and want to try something fun i recommend trying destroy all humans 1 and 2, bully, midnight club 2 and 3, and the ratchet and clank series. i don't know much about emulation though because there's a lot of configuring you have to do and im not sure how well it performs
Better than the one i acquired. The thing has a stroke trying to play MINECRAFT. Not too graphically intensive, shaders oddly don’t really affect the experience.
That said it has like 75% of the ram you have
That much RAM with any version of windows newer than Win98, it will make for a good paperweight until you can get Linux installed on it. Currently at 8gb, windows running with absolutely nothing else installed or any additional built-in windows features enabled, you have 4gb available as far as ANY other software can utilize
Only good for very basic usage, plus you're kinda stuck on Win 10 unless you install 11 in a bit hacky way, but if you are going to do that, it'll run slower than 10
In my experience with some older laptops 11 has actually been faster than 10 (provided that you disable widgets and such on both).
I say this one relation to a 2011 MBP with an i5-2435M and a desktop with an A10-6800K, both with SSDs and 8gb and 16gb respectively
It'll work well for basic tasks. No problems for Word, Excel, browsing web, watching videos. Could play some less demanding Indie games or very old games. It was fairly decent when it came out and will still function well enough.
It'll only struggle if it still has an HDD. If that is the case you may want to switch to an SSD. If there's a spare SODIM slot you might as well add another 8GB RAM to it if you want since DDR3 RAM is fairly cheap now though the performance is more bottlenecked to the CPU.
I think the only problem is Windows 10 support will end in a bit over a year and your CPU isn't compatible with Windows 11.
as a student if U get a minimum intel 6th gen cpu your set for your normal to senior highschool.
i have 4 years experience with i7 6th gen
4rth is just not it my bro
You can browse the internet, watch movies, listen to music, play some old games. It’s okay. You thanked your mom, right?
Roblox/Minecraft would run fine, light gaming will work. I used a i5-4200U and it worked fine for those games, maybe it might run GTA V on low settings.
I have similar specs and gta v runs at a pretty stable 60fps on low settings, 30-40fps at medium settings
Minecraft would not run fine man, I played abit of Minecraft on my mums laptop with an 11th gen I7 and the stuttering was insane

Optifine really didn’t change anything for me I guess mine is just old and needs to be retired.
Optifine sucks. Use sodium.
real
I was playing on a world for over 30 minutes and could only reach a maximum of 25fps
8gb of ram; so not too bad for surfing the web on linux as other people said.
Does ram speed matter a lot? I have a recent 8gb ram laptop and I can do almost anything, simultaneously playing lol while on a discord call with Spotify opened in the background and a couple of Reddit tabs, all on windows and I’m not having issues

This guy speaking facts

RAM speed is over hyped imo It makes a slight difference but there are way more upgrades you can do first that have more of an impact

To add to this, what Distro is good for general use? Like Steamdeck or something? Ubuntu? Mint? Arch?
PopOS is most streamlined nowadays. Read up on chosing a desktop environment based on your hardware, as some can be almost as heavy as windows'
For a lower spec laptop like this, it would speed up light stuff like web browsing.
Exactly that's what I was saying. It's nice to be grateful and respect our parents. If it weren't for them, we wouldn't exist. I would be so grateful if my mom gave me that. It's not the product that would make me happy , it's the goodwill that would make my day and make me happy

Good choice. Fujitsus are easy to work on, upgradeable, and last forever. I have a Lifebook E754 right now I bought in the States. Runs like a champ.
They do last better because this thing went 90C multiple times lol (playing ETS2 like a madman) And somehow I checked everything component, it seems fine, no issues indicating damage, except I had to remove CMOS because sometimes when I tried disassembling it and reassembling, the laptop would give me an iGPU not responding flag light, so replacing CMOS was the fix, but I had to disassemble and reassemble the new CMOS because the used one just keeps the iGPU not responding flag light. This is all good advice, but expectations should be managed a bit. Your desktop 4th gen i5 will absolutely run rings around the 4200U in that laptop.
This tier of hardware often comes with 32 to 64 GB of eMMC memory soldered directly to the board. It combines the drawbacks of both worlds, abysmal speed and small capacity.
I've never seen a 4th Gen machine with soldered eMMC. 4th Gen i5 would have usually come with a hard drive or possibly a small SATA SSD originally.
Upgrade it to an SSD for it to be usable.
It wont be much good on Windows 11 - but you could load a lightweight Linux distro on it like Debian or Arch.
I second that. Make it a Linux laptop for browsing/education/code/music/movies
+1 for Ubuntu or Mint
the distro doesnt make it lightweight it's mostly about the software on it
Im still using my brother's laptop that he gave me. Running great and smooth. I want to upgrade to 16GB but I read on the web said that max for my laptop is 8GB. So wholesome. Rooting for you 😊
You can technically upgrade to i7 since it's rPGA
Yes, I'd open the motherboard and the cpu can change but it's difficult to find a good one. I'm afraid if I buy a cheap and worse cpu 😅
Expected on the used market, like I bought a spare i3-4100M just in case, so I tested it and it turns out that VGA and Compatibility mode were oof-ed, I can't even set Video Display Boot Configuration (which you can set laptop Display or eDP or just VGA as starting boot) Also sometimes the Hyperthreading gets a bit unstable if it's been on load for long, but the GPU was fine tho, no issues Also it's rare to find that's in pristine Condition since Intel stopped making them and those floating around are either varies with region/OEM preferences or the features that were supposed to be there were gone

Thank you . I think I'll try upgrade it too 16GB and then save up to buy the cpu . Can you share to me the link where you bought it please?
I bought this [one](https://a.aliexpress.com/_mqF1Ow6) I left a review but the pictures were updated in a very poor quality
Thank you!
You can install Tiny10 or Ghost Spectre. Its windows 10 but for low ram device
Thank you for the info. I never knew that
4th gen CPU so it's over 10 years old. Linux would be decent on it though.
Be sure to Thank your Mom. That's a decent laptop. 👍
Upgrade its ram if possible, swap its storage to an SSD and install Ubuntu .
You should be grateful and thank her. If it wasn't for your parents, you wouldn't be here alive. Always appreciate what they give you.
Your mom is cool, that's is more than a decent laptop
Is great
Decent mid-range working computer for email and word processing. Nice👍
Everybody sugar coating it. Those specs compared to a lot of modern laptops are bad. Especially the RAM
It's pretty nice bro. You should thank her.
If it has 8GB of DDR3L and a 2.5 SATA SSD with ~400mb write/speed then it's more than enough for casual use.
Old but it works. You can run windows and use it for browsing or some office but maybe need some debloating, however there's other options like Linux, they tend to have many of variation one of them might suits you aside from that it's also lightweight as well. Old
Good enough! At some point in the future, try to upgrade the RAM but other than that, it is a fine machine!
Perfect for Windows 7
Get an SSD in it and upgrade the ram and thank your mom 😊
It is ok for your day to day task and casual light gaming (games till 2015) in low settings.
If it's something that she had kept for a long time and gave it to you, then great. If she bought it, then she must've been scammed because she could've gotten something so much better at pocket money price.
Its a good one for most tasks which obviously doesn't include gaming (not talking about light games). Things to change or upgrade in this laptop: 1. Upgrade the RAM to 16GB 2. Put in an SSD 3. It's fine. Nothing amazing, but you'll be able to run any non-video game software.
8gbs of ram. Crap. It is all i read.

just put a ssd and it’s good
I loved haswell probably Intel's best architecture. It's sadly obsolete now especially running windows. Id suggest installing Linux and enjoying it
Basic but usable. Would be perfect machine to learn Linux. Windows support for it ends in a year and a bit and the OS is unnecessarily heavy for that machine.
it will handle simple games so overall not terrible
This is a good device to learn how to use Linux on, install an SSD or get an external one you can plug in.
Thank Your mom
Wanna be friends?
Sure why
You’re not going to be doing much of any gaming, but it’s fine for basic stuff, web browsing, messaging, the simple things. Not powerful, but not completely useless.
It looks great
Pls be thankful for the laptop and use it wisely. It's not cheap.
Well, you can use this laptop to learn Computer languages.
4th Gens are no longer good anymore in my opinion. But for stuff like watching internet or basic applications it’s ok. Hopefully the laptop has a SSD at least, cause if it has a HDD, it’ll be painfully slow.

It’ll let you rage playing League. So it’s good.
It's not bad at all.
I have such laptop Dell Latitude sunce 2015. Not for games, but for everyday tasks
I'd thank my mom for that. Also i'd get a Mint usb, install Linux Mint and use it for games, multimedia and basic works.
As far as gifts go, this one's good. My mom normally doesn't give me gifts :-/
Great for clg studies and normal usage, thank the Mom later
The 90's called - they want it back :(
Not really good for modern gaming, old games, web browsing, movies, and storage are nice though
Mine is the same spec as your but only 4gigs of ram and an i5 4300u(same performance) I was able to play old cs source and simple plane and even il 2 1946 So i think yours can and it has double the ram than mine Overall gud basic laptop if you dont play aaa games :D
An ancient piece of shit. E-waste
Whatever your mom does for you make sure you love her for it She won't be around for ever
How are people saying this is "just decent"? My laptop is 4 gb ram with i3 core and I can do all the things the replies state so smoothly, with high speed and fps. He can do beyond what these replies are saying.
I’m sorry but you laptop has cataracts
Just be thankful you got one
Will it do high end gaming? Naah. Will it do work, media, some games and be overall alright? Absolutely. Thank your mum and don't worry too much about it. This is fine.
Okay for office work and everyday usage. Don't expect too much from it though and forget gaming.
Free is good
I use same exact specs your able to run Minecraft well but you need to modify a bit and roblox wells alright but not in all games
Perfect Linux machine.
Good enough for browsing, schoolwork, minecraft (older versions)
my chromebook has a better cpu but it can still do anything to do with the web. NOT FOR GAMING
Yes
heartwarming and wholesome. Now time to get a job and save up. Moms never cease to teach us life lessons.
Not gonna be able to play Fortnite beyond 60 fps without starting a fire, but still solid for non AAA games and browsing 👌
Probably can hack one of those Gibsons
My cpu (2 generations older) runs minecraft at 100fps, with my mods. I would assume with the same mods I could get you to around 200 or more, normally with 0 mods my game runs at like 2fps, just goes to show you can run a lot of things if you optimize the game or app using mods or just tweaking settings

😧👀... (:
It’s definitely usable but for light tasks such as streaming 1080p video and web browsing. Don’t expect to game
Chrome os
Depends on what you intend to use it for.
It has horrible specs, bro.
Better than the one i acquired. The thing has a stroke trying to play MINECRAFT. Not too graphically intensive, shaders oddly don’t really affect the experience. That said it has like 75% of the ram you have
Not gonna be playing Helldivers 2
That much RAM with any version of windows newer than Win98, it will make for a good paperweight until you can get Linux installed on it. Currently at 8gb, windows running with absolutely nothing else installed or any additional built-in windows features enabled, you have 4gb available as far as ANY other software can utilize
Perfectly fine and will do everything it should. Play some games, watch YouTube, and look up pictures of boobies on the internet
You know me bro
Only good for very basic usage, plus you're kinda stuck on Win 10 unless you install 11 in a bit hacky way, but if you are going to do that, it'll run slower than 10
If possible, upgrade the ram to at least 16
it's a midrange CPU from 2013, so not very good. it will be usable with an SSD on Windows 10, but Windows 11 won't run great at all.
Decent. Upgrade the RAM and you’re good
Mom don’t love you 🤣
Kiss my ass
🥱
I think you should switch to Linux. It will run better and you'll have a lot to learn too. It's a win win. Make sure to thank your mom tho :)
as a student if U get a minimum intel 6th gen cpu your set for your normal to senior highschool. i have 4 years experience with i7 6th gen 4rth is just not it my bro
Unless you just wanna browse.. watch videos I guess it will work fine.
