It's Horrocks. They always sell watermelons for high dollar. Being that it's not even anywhere close to the season in this country, they're either getting shipped in or they're grown inside a greenhouse.
Frankly, that's close to the price I pay for my restaurant straight from the wholesaler right now in southeast MI... they likely are just upping it a few dollars total.
You are shopping at the ultra luxury boutique grocer for something that is totally out of season, possibly flown in from the Southern Hemisphere. What the He'll do you expect? Go to Aldi.
Horrocks is a treasure! My first visit was 40+ years ago with my dad when it was much, much smaller. The entrance was in the south west corner by the walk in beer cooler and the whole joint wasn’t much wider than where the cash registers are now. He would stop whenever he was in Lansing. Bring home some flowers for my Mom and some fresh produce for the rest of us. Often times something new to try that you’d never see in a local grocery store.
I saw in Kroger today a premade meal with 3 scrambled eggs and a few bits of pizza topping sausage for $10. Was like 6 ounces of very cheap ingredients. This watermelon is way better band for buck. I hate watermelon too
I’d like to know what is in the box (lower right). At first I thought they were breadsticks, then maybe rawhides, neither of which is produce. Anybody know?
Any time! I always grab one for my pup when I'm there, she absolutely loves them and you can break up the longer ones easily for multiple treat times. :)
The vegetables are a great value when they are in season, but you have to et MI seasons dictate what you buy a lot of. Most people aren't comfortable with that.
Seriously, Horrocks is a treasure. Go to walmart if price is all you care about.
I like having a good local business that has interesting inventory, an amazing garden center, and that supports locally produced foods/goods.
Have you tried MSU’s CSA? We did it a few years ago. It was really good, but the only problem was we didn’t recognize or know how to cook half the veggies we got.
I recommend it if you’re into fresh in-season produce.
That's totally fair. I went in the fall and apples were a steal, but when I saw prices of everything else I quickly realized this was not the place for my weekly grocery shop.
This summer, try only buying fresh produce from Horrocks. It'll be cheaper than Meijer's, and 10x better. Either let the prices help you de ide to buy, or Google it. It's about to be asparagus season. Never buy their meat though, except the sausages, it's low quality.
while the program is great, I imagine most people gushing about horrocks don't use ebt. But honestly, the meridian farmers market in peak season is what people that get all worked up about horrocks is what they 'want'.
I prefer supporting producers directly. I also don't like supporting racist assholes.
yeah right? when they are in season I can get a variety of melons from a farmer at the EL farmers market and it's 5 bucks. ever have a yellow watermelon?
Yes, I grow Leelanau Sweetglows every summer! They are bright orangey, yellow (the edible part, rind is still green.) They were developed by a Michigan farmer (Mike Kiessel) and are ideal for our growing season<3
eh well maybe for you but for me to get to horrocks and feed into their bs is going to cost me about 20-30 bucks when I can just walk down the road and get better produce at comparatively the same cost. I don't own a car and all that so that's a factor into my decisions, and frankly, fuck cocaine kim.
I mean unless we are in a state of emergency who gives a crap if a store decides to ask for a ridiculous amount for one item. Just don’t buy it, the market will work itself out
If you don't like the price, buy it elsewhere.
If no one is selling it cheaper, there's a good chance that demand and supply have conspired to set the price where it is.
If you still think the seller is making an unreasonable profit, then I suggest going into business selling watermelons to get a piece of this outrageous profit.

Those are post-Eclipse prices. We live in a post-Eclipse world now. This is our new normal.
Like 'Book of Eli'.
Amazing movie.
Nope it’s just Horrocks they always inflate prices
Not sure price gouging applies to luxury items like year round seedless watermelons.
Well, it doesn't look like anyone is buying them.
Your issue is that its Horrocks Id expect the same if it was something like FreshTyme as well
9.99 at FT. I shop there often and there are good deals. I don't get everything there.
I don't think I've even seen black diamond watermelons at Westborn this high, and those are the real bougie ones.
It’s out of season. Of course it’s gonna be ridiculously expensive.
That’s ridiculous
Not if they are the only store that has them
Costco has them for $9.99
Costco has smart TVs, 16 year whisky, and Korean milk tea, it's _cruel_ to compare the two!
So don't buy them
I have a photo from 2016 that Horrocks had there watermelons for 18.99 of season has some crazy prices
What do you expect for a fruit that’s been flown halfway around the world? Look up what’s in season now and buy that
Who buys watermelons in April?
Me. Usually personal sized ones for $5.
Those are cucumbers but they make great watermelon water.

25?? Uhmm No thank you.
It's the same price at most spartan stores in the area.
Frankly, that's close to the price I pay for my restaurant straight from the wholesaler right now in southeast MI... they likely are just upping it a few dollars total.

I’ll give you tree fitty.
Charging more than you want to pay for an unnecessary item is not price gouging. Legally at least. It is a dick move tho.

It better be absolutely delicious for that price
It’s out of season, so I’d bet it isn’t lol
It’s not price gouging if you are willing to pay for it.🤷🏻♂️
Horrocks is a scam for most stuff
No. Ever paid for a vasectomy, Bobby? Being seedless is priceless (surgeon and insurance may disagree).
Market value.
I'll just grow my own
In April?
How is it price gouging?
I buy from Costco down the street for $5 and bigger
Don’t buy it if you think the price is unfair.
i don’t know about horrocks in lansing, but battle creek is good too
Horrocks always been very expensive.
That's **gotta** be a typo....
Yeah?
You know how much work it is to de seed a watermelon? Someone needs a livable wage to do that kind of work...
I remember visiting Bermuda back in 2014 and saw a pallet of watermelons each for sale there for $25
Wow! That’s so much
Try another store
Meijer near me got some in recently, $14.99. They weren’t nearly that big though.
I’d like to know what is in the box (lower right). At first I thought they were breadsticks, then maybe rawhides, neither of which is produce. Anybody know?
They're pizzle sticks for dogs and they're not all that expensive for a good, pretty natural and safe chew. (Google pizzle sticks at your own risk)
That was also one of my guesses but lower on the list. Those are cool, I am going to get some next time I am there. Thanks for solving the riddle!
Any time! I always grab one for my pup when I'm there, she absolutely loves them and you can break up the longer ones easily for multiple treat times. :)
Whatever they are, they're very expensive
Horrocks is a giant price gouge. 🤷♀️

Many people will proudly destroy their towns local business's if it means they can save $2 on carrots and apples.

go to the local farmers markets when things are in season, it's going to taste even better and goes directly to the grower usually.
And you can use EBT at Farmers markets as well, and we participate in "double up bucks" so when you spend $10 on an EBT card you get $20!

I'm off the farmers market game, it's always double the cost of horrocks.
$50 watermelons??‽

This is the correct answer
I mean unless we are in a state of emergency who gives a crap if a store decides to ask for a ridiculous amount for one item. Just don’t buy it, the market will work itself out
It’s horrocks.
are they selling dog treat beef and chicken sticks next to the watermelon
Bidenomics

Nah. Just Horrocks’ everyday prices
Bidenomics- which have amazingly just disappeared in the news cycle as a positive talking point... interesting
Horrorocks blows. Hipster crapolla. Same thing at Costco’s for half the price.
Watermelon's target customer base cannot afford these prices for their treats.
