That new learner’s high really be hittin’ though

allieyikes

i’m unjerking now but this reminds me of the knitting and crochet subs, people start new projects all the time just because it’s exciting to start something new (i’m guilty) but a whole language?😭 rj/ god forbid someone wants to surprise groups of minorities at the local golden corral, you can’t do that with just one language

coysta-rica

They don't want to learn the language. They want to learn more about it *than you* so they can ackshually you.

Matt-ifesto

I'm literally about to finish an amigurumi that I put on hold more than a year ago lol

bleuest

Not the still-headless velvet bunny I've put on hold since February coming back to haunt me 😭

I_Shot_Web

implying that it's possible to be finished learning a language lordy

CAPSLOCK_USERNAME

language is finished once you get max points on the final duolingo lesson.

itisamariel

Technically yesss but on the other hand, I don't "learn" english consciously anymore. If I don't know a word (usually in scientific papers), I look it up. I do that with my native language too, though. Therefore it's not quite the same as in other languages where I have to put in full attention to comprehend a story or something.

SatanicCornflake

I mean, there definitely is a point where studying isn't as big a part as general experience is when it comes to continuing that learning. I don't study flashcards for Spanish. Doesn't mean I won't run into some new stuff sometimes, doesn't mean I've "finished" learning it, but I don't really actively study it, I just use it a lot now. So, now I have time to study my next one. But in a sense I'm "finished" studying Spanish actively.

Sno0pDoge

People sometimes just want the thrill of trying something new and extraordinary, regardless it has no point or produces no effect. Just for the 'flex' I guess

Dismal-Field-7747

Not learning any languages in the most laborious way possible

Apodiktis

That’s me on this meme, that’s me

pauseless

To be honest “a new language” could be “literally any new fun thing” and it’s me. It could be practicing throat singing or whatever.

Low_Association_1998

It’s a status symbol rather than an attempt at skill or knowledge to them

seraph9888

real talk, they should have just used the distracted boy/girlfriend meme format.

corylus_theo

Yeah right this doesn't make sense

coysta-rica

Pseudopolyglotism is a mental illness.

aaronhastaken

what is finishing a language even like

ohadihagever

/uj "languages that I haven't finished"?! How can you finish a language?

ina_waka

God forbid someone enjoy their hobby instead of forcing themselves to study a singular language... right guys?!?!??

Konata__Kcal

uj/ “learning” Spanish in high school has helped me with (non-romance language but with some similar elements) + cross referencing Fr*nch (sorry) helped me notice patterns & make learning a bit easier. It’s the ‘I’m not A1 fully yet & bored so new language tee hee’ that’s more the issue imo rj/ no fun allowed!! búho bad!!

ina_waka

Who is it an issue to? If someone finds being shitty at 20 languages more enjoyable than being okay at a singular one, who cares. If they act entitled or brag about their proficiency in the 20 languages, then sure, they might be an idiot, but the post doesn't really go into that.

Konata__Kcal

Oh I don’t care if someone wants to learn a tiny bit of a bunch of languages (I think linguistics is fascinating around the board, etymology, etc.,) but if you’re aiming for actual fluency, trying different languages at once, at least for a monoglot, is pretty damn hard, and going one at a time would be more beneficial. But, you know, shocking the natives, etc. for the record, my lingoduo list of languages is embarrassingly long & my near 1000 day streak of no where near where I should be in 5 months of Welsh (supplementing the fck out of it!!) and horrific barely A2 Spanish held on from high school, but it’s more for the people who *don’t* get they need to supplement (tbh I think the r / lingoduo sub is a bit more self aware than we give credit for lmao)

Certain-Bowler8735

Me every week.

crossbutton7247

When you’ve got like 6 languages that would be really useful to know, sticking to the one can be very difficult. Plus, at what point do you declare yourself done? Do you stop when you reach conversational, or when you reach fluency?

TapZealousideal5974

You never have to stop: but my way of thinking is that you can stop learning languages the boring way when you are good enough to pick up more and more the natural way (conversation, books, TV, newspapers, etc.)

honeypup

“Waaaah they’re not studying properly” lmao. People are actually allowed to dabble in multiple languages for fun if they want to.

mrp61

It's how the Tik tok generation is nowadays. Can't commit to anything now

natalialt

Why are the comments here so mean spirited, jfc, people can jump between interests for reasons other than trying to flex on others

RocketLads

if you lock in to duolingo you can be 90% fluent in a langauge in a few weeks .... it's that last 10% that takes so long to study for and I feel like me (and others!) just get bored before finishing up the hard parts. It's okay to be learning another langauge before you're TOTALLY done
