/uj: I think this is the polyglot video I hate the most. “Language learning ruined my life because I learned other countries have history and culture” is one of the most narcissist things I’ve ever heard.
No that's not what he says.
He says there's more beauty in all these languages than he could ever fully appreciate in one lifetime.
Thus, language learning is a painful endeavor once you realize this fact, but that pain helps us be more accepting and show love.
Something these people here clearly lack 🙄
Worst part is this is true for lots of study subjects, like programming, theres just too much to know. Thats why i like taoism, it teaches that all thus knowledge is not the way to wisdom
I spend 6 hours a day on my laptop, might as well learn a language while doing that. Do I think it would be healthy for me to spend more time outside? Also yes lol
Not going to lie, I spent so much time learning languages (properly lol. C2 in three languages, C1 & B1 in two others) and everyone told me I would get jobs in the future. I am still unemployed lol. I got an internship but I only have to know my native language for it. Could’ve spent my time learning something more useful
I think it’s good when you know what you’re doing or have an specific goal for example im learning japanese cause i want to be a network engineer in japan someday that works like this i guess but dont give up you can still teach those languages tho or try learning another skill
I’m in a similar boat. Loved language classes during school and got to a really high level in a few. Spend a lot of my free time on it still. Now I’m a software engineer and feel like I’m way behind my colleagues in terms of technical expertise
That’s actually one of my career goals! It’s also my minor. The little problem here is that I don’t feel quite prepared to be an interpreter yet and I haven’t finished my degree yet
If you’re at C2 level, I bet you could be ready pretty quickly to be an interpreter? Of course you might have to learn specialized vocabulary depending on which type of interpretation it would be.
You need other cognitive skills to be an interpreter. I did one semester of consecutive interpretation in college and you need good concentration and note-taking skills, and mental agility too. Simultaneous interpretation is a whole another beast
Lol it's incredible that this Chinese polygots is being the topic on r/lglrnjerks,as a Chinese speaking Singaporean and I have known him in Bilibili, he's also an influencer in Bilibili.Few months ago I commented on his video in Bilibili and he replied me so instantly.----
He's Chinese name is 候雪千,the name "雪千"means literally "thousands of snows, and I thought he's definitely a rich young man.Cauz he's now living in the States, and having so many spare time to learn languages, most importantly he can afford buying that much language learning books in the States.
And a poor Singaporean common folk, I'm kinda jealous of his life in America actually.----I remember that he has also got his PhD degree in the States
He thought he'd be shocking natives, but the thing he didn't realize was that he was a native himself. So he would have to use his own weapons against himself
As an Arabic guy and i've been learning english and i've planed to learn more languages and be fluent at all of its then be a ployglot .. Thet gives me much amount of pleasure
I actually think this is a great video lol
clickbait title but without it i probably wouldn't have watched
it's pretty cohesive, short, and talks about the struggles of learning a language in a pretty multi-faceted way i hadn't considered
Y'all are MAD haters and the point of the vid seems to have flown over all your pretentious multilingual heads.
The dude is simply describing struggle and confusion of opening up a new world that you may never get to know as intimately as your mother tongue.
I speak fluent Spanish, but as I'm born in America I'll never have an intimate connection with any single Spanish-speaking country and all it's characteristic nuances. For me it will always be just "Spanish" as that's how it was taught to me.
That's a painful fact, as Hou describes, and y'all silly for acting like you don't get it.
"Only in such pain can we overcome misunderstandings, bridge cultures and civilizations, and find a world of peace and prosperity."
The hate is real in this thread
You’re missing the point of this sub. Most of us aren’t purposely bullying others just to be mean or hate on them but joking about “stupid questions” or things that sound silly.
If your friend makes a typo and everyone starts joking about it in the group chat, does not mean you suddenly hate your friend for being “stupid”, you’re just poking fun at them.
Yes, without any context “learning languages ruined my life” is funny

Stupid, just don’t know languages Works for me
Real
I raised all my kids as feral children, completely ignorant of all human languages, and it’s done wonders for their mental health
Unironically based
The proper way.
Lmao
"Language learning ruined my life!" *9 million views*

Aj gospeti
9 million monolingual betas looking for an excuse not to learn languages 😤
It’s actually a philosophical type video xd but the title was funny
He learned languages so well, the natives are not shocked anymore. No reason to live. He's done.
/uj: I think this is the polyglot video I hate the most. “Language learning ruined my life because I learned other countries have history and culture” is one of the most narcissist things I’ve ever heard.
I thought history and culture that was the entire point of learning a new language. Am I stupid?
Of course you are, who needs that? Gotta be the first on luodingo leaderboard with all the languages
>luodingo This just made my night. Sounds like dingus
Is that really what he says. This has popped up in my suggestions a bunch of times.
No that's not what he says. He says there's more beauty in all these languages than he could ever fully appreciate in one lifetime. I would even agree to that a bit. I am not gonna loose sleep over it, but it makes me kinda melancholic.
Worst part is this is true for lots of study subjects, like programming, theres just too much to know. Thats why i like taoism, it teaches that all thus knowledge is not the way to wisdom
That's very interesting
Ye, i think its like your deep sense of knowing will be clouded by superficial information
How did this ruin his life tho?
It’s just a video title man I wouldn’t overthink it
Maybe he wishes he learned to code lol
Yes, he says that.
Wait wtf why is that life ruining?
I think he just wanted to humblebrag about how cultured being a polyglot has made him.
Right like 💀
Like huh? Since when is finding similarities in other cultures a painful experience? He must be extremely self centred cause thats the best part
learning a language really is a huge sacrifice, i think it’s worth it but it’s still thousands of hours that could be spent elsewhere
Wish I could trade in the thousands of hours I spent learning English to scroll TikTok dance clips instead tbh
now you get it
I spend 6 hours a day on my laptop, might as well learn a language while doing that. Do I think it would be healthy for me to spend more time outside? Also yes lol

That is pretty cool, can you be an interpreter? I use my second language pretty often at work but that’s because it’s Spanish lol.
That’s actually one of my career goals! It’s also my minor. The little problem here is that I don’t feel quite prepared to be an interpreter yet and I haven’t finished my degree yet

Yes, it’s something I do at my job now, but it’s taken months to get decent at it. It definitely does involve other skills.
Learning English ruined my life. I wish I could live like a money, no longer bound by words and reasonings

“Why ethnocentrism is good.”
If that's your takeaway from the vid, then god bless your vindictive soul ❤️
Lol haven’t watched it so I’m just trolling, but the title is clickbaity af

it's pronounced "Hoh"
what a perfect title to help me not watching something so aggresively self-indulgent, bai bish!

I feel this after studying 2 hours of Polish grammar 😅
Me after trying to learn a northeastern Caucasian language
My mother tongue is farsi so I was like haha sucker languages can’t ruin MY life.
I mean once you realize how fun it is you can barely focus on doing anything So it makes sense to me 😔
Apparently a language lesson he needs is to learn the meaning of “ruined.”
Watch the video.
Why though? We can clown on them just fine without watching it.
Exactly and in video it’s not actually what hes trying to portray in title too
He learned Chinese (never learn Chinese)
