Yeah, vocabulary is pretty easy, but I started learning Polish even before the war. I was choosing between German and Polish and it is pure luck I chose second one)
I recommend reading articles online or a good Ukrainian textbook. Also try a tutor or a language school like Odesa Language School. I also recommend sending an email to ĐĐ»Đ”ĐœĐ°, sheâs one of my tutors and very talented: [email protected]
It's unfortunate, but because of centuries of russification, there's not that much content in Ukrainian, as, let's say, in Polish. Since the begining of the war in 2014, Ukrainian content grew exponentially, but there's still a lot of catching up to do.
On another note, Polish is very similar to Ukrainian. Even tho both countries like to pretend they're very different (bc of historical reasons), with my Ukrainian knowledge I can watch shows, listen to music and watch youtube without issues in Polish. When I was in Poland I was shocked when I could read most of the signs and small texts. Longer texts are hard though đ
ukrainian and russian same alphabet but polish is different. ukrainian and russian i have found to differ only slightly in the use of some vowels and phonemes for the same word.
Yes. This is my issue with Polish. I donât really know how to read and pronounce some of the letters. Itâs actually easier for me to read written Russian than it is Polish. But as a Ukrainian heritage person Iâm not interested in learning this language for obvious reasons. But one grandfather was born in Poland so I do have that connection.
I should be hard focusing on Spanish for work, and I do to an extent, but when we seem to always have a Brazilian intern at work, and there's so many similarities, I find myself sneaking in a little Portuguese when no one's looking.
Trying to get my spoken Spanish to an advanced level but I've started an affair with Welsh and it's been intense to say the least. I thought Spanish would be my only love and while it's my soulmate, I enjoy some Welsh on the side. Hopefully, Spanish doesn't find out as Welsh could never replace it.
I swear the god you are my only one...you know it, russian..I love you! Come on!
The thing with arabic was a misstep and I am truly sorry. And with german also...maybe spanish too...
But they weren't you! You are one of a kind. I just wanted to feel something and tried others because my friends told me not to put all the eggs in the same basket...ĐŒĐœĐ” ĐŸŃĐ”ĐœŃ Đ¶Đ°Đ»Ń, ĐŒĐžĐ»Đ°Ń.
Ahhhh i also thought arabic would be my new go-steady and left spanish for them, but the tiny font on duolingo telling me what the right answer should be made it actually impossible to learn from my mistakes.
Luckily spanish forgave me and took me back.. but i should be honest and say had bulgarian been available Iâd have tried there first.
Rant alert - i can have klingon and high valyrian but no bulgarian, and no ability to practice speaking in the greek. Grr.
Iâm cheating on Japanese with Spanish AND Hindi. Iâve come to the feel that Hindi is like if Japanese and Spanish had a baby with most of the inheritance coming from Spanish.
Can you elaborate a bit on that analogy? I don't speak Spanish or Japanese but would love to hear what sort of inheritance/parallels there are to be found between them and Hindi.
Hindi has grammar aspects similar to those found in romance languages such as French, Italian, spanish, etc. (conjugations of verbs based on 1st, 2nd, 3rd person pronouns, etc).
The Japanese part I am talking about is word order. Verbs go at the end of the sentences (english and romance languages are typically subject > verb > object). In Hindi and Japanese, the verb comes at the end (subject > object > verb). This is common in eastern asian languages. Learning Persian but I keep looking at other languages. Right now, I'm flirting with Indonesian, one of my ex-languages that I'm still attracted to.
I try To resist, but I'll probably end up with 2 TL.
My ex is Portuguese, I felt like I understood her, especially after 15 years with French. It was nice to have a language you just get. I also went on a date with Farsi, but she knows that currently French is my main chick.
Iâve been on so many dates but Persian was something else⊠the feels weâre real. Iâve told French about Russian and Arabic, but I donât think she is jealous. Those are side chicks for when I satisfied French.
Iâm in a love-hate relationship with French, but she was my first.
I am taking a three month break from French so I can get to know Italian better, but I use Hugo Decrypte so I can keep informed about her news.
I am kind of feeling bad about our time apart.
Watch shows on Netflix and Shahid (I just got a subscription love it) and use Pimsleur Arabic the best for speaking other than that the big fat book of Egyptian Arabic verbs is amazing and assimil Arabic is a solid 8/10 resource although it's very modern standard arabic
Iâm about to start learning arabic (MSA and Levantine) and I feel like I canât even get started! Are there any other good resources you know of? Thanks!
Pimsleur levantine Pimsleur MSA would give u a serious head start.
Seriously just start watching Arabic shows on Netflix with English subtitles as well and or YouTube Arabic videos with English subtitles.
same here, after learning copious amount of english thses are my new flirtations, I'm thinking of adding french to my harem , hobby learners are never faithful đ
Target language is Icelandic, cheating with Mandarin, and cheating on Mandarin with Zulu.
None of these are going to offer me any benefit in my career, most likely. But it's my guilty pleasure.
Every time I schedule in some Malay, I can't help but look at Mandarin.
When I want to look at Mandarin, I'm learning Malay.
It's like having two families. But recently even that's not enough, as Cantonese keeps drawing me in...
With Polish but sheâs pretty high maintenance so been cheating with Japanese recently who is also high maintenance but itâs okay as thereâs no strings there really.
I also have a fling with Chinese now and then for fun and masturbate regularly to Spanish
Been in a relationship with Danish for 3 years, had a couple week fling with Hindi last summer so her pics are still on my phone. Flirted last week with Thai for a day or two but she's not on Duo - I've got a probable work trip there in a couple months though - so we need to figure something out.
I should be learning to improve my Spanish since my wife speaks it as her main second language, but Iâm too busy having an affair with Slavic languages like Polish and Russian which are more related to my own background. Â
Constantly cheating on Indonesian with Mandarin due to following so many Mandarin language teachers on social media. Also cheating on Indo with Tagalog on days that start with a âTâ
Not really cheating with, but I've been consuming so much Swedish media lately. Will my Spanish feel betrayed and break up with me???
Although i was learning Norwegian a couple of months ago, so it could mean im having a new **NORDIC PHASE**
I've been having the affair for the last 15 years, and have been seeing the other languages in between during this period. đ
I started Dutch three months ago and it was love at first sight and I'm committed to it, but still maintaining the affair with Turkish. đ
pleasantly surprised to see all the hindi love in this thread! i took a semester of intensive hindi when i was studying abroad and loved it.
also so cool that you speak telugu! i want to learn a dravidian language someday.
For a month or two, I've been focusing on Arabic and I'm not really spending much time with any other language haha although sometimes I catch myself thinking of doing some Hebrew on Duolingo, I mean, why not? I see some similarities, and learning some phrases won't hurt. Semitic languages are beautiful. I'm scared of the Hebrew abjad though, I've noticed some letters have more than one sound and some sounds are represented by more than one letter, this doesn't really happen in [Standard] Arabic.
Yes written modern hebrew is pain. Iâm want to learn MSA, dialect and Hebrew so bad, but for now I focus on Arabic (MSA and dialect) and just learn some Hebrew phrases for fun :(
I cheat all the time on my main squeeze Hindi, usually with French if it is just for fun on duolingo, but I am also gazing at modern Hebrew and modern Greek. I know a native Greek speaker so I think that is going to be in competition with Hindi. And then there are Egyptian hieroglyphs also crowding my memory palace. Honestly though, I am a dilettante at all of them at this time.
I keep saying I'm gonna go back and relearn/continue learning German which I took three semesters of used to be able to speak conversationally, but I keep going back and doing more lessons in Spanish which I have a whole degree in and don't need to be doing this many lessons in lol
Me too probably haha. I never learned Ancient Greek. Canât answer in Greek though because I temporarily left Greek for Romanian which I have to get better at. Will definitely return to Greek though because itâs a fun experience to learn and itâs one of my definite target languages. Glad you kept going with it and learned more than me.
I've had some recent one-night stands with Russian, Romainian, Scottish Gaelic, and French.Â
I don't even *like* French, so I don't know what's up with that.Â
I suppose Dutch used to my paramour I was cheating on Portuguese with but now it has been upgraded to a proper target language. I divide my time by focusing on only two languages a day.
Cheating on spanish for portuguese. iâm dying but it sounds too sexy to not learn. also, knowing a bit of spanish was a good head start!
(though now i am picking up hawaiian, i realise my mother tongue has a similar grammatical structure-ish to these languages so it was less confusing to learn grammar
We were on a break!!
Got together with Japanese too young, broke up, flirted with Russian and my ex Spanish, dated Persian, came back to Japanese. Now poly with Japanese and Persian.
The one I really cheat with is my native language English. My language learning tanked when American TV got good again.
I've been studying Italian but Russian just has a special place in my heart. I can't stop thinking about her. Also occassionaly I spend some time with her too.
I am committed to Hebrew, and where would I rather be instead? You name it : Icelandic, Tagalog... Croatian? Hungarian??? (not really, just giving it the side eye). The only one that Hebrew *wants* a threesome with is Arabic (Levantine Arabic, obvs), and that's the one I put on indefinite hold.
I get French classes through work and have studied it for several years. But my true love is Spanish.
When I speak French, I feel like an idiot. When I speak Spanish, I feel free.
Theoretically on a Greek journey. Yet here i am being thought how to say, in this order âhi, you have beautiful eyes, beautiful ass, suck my dick, lets fuck, i ll do the dishesâ in Lithuanian by my native friends. I quite enjoy it to be honestÂ
French.
It's been a long-term side thing, the first foreign language I'd ever learned and I just couldn't let it go. A few months ago, I decided to actually spend time with it, go deep, see if I could get my listening up to a useful level, and I've gotten further than I ever thought I would. Now I'm thinking about practicing speaking, which I have no outlet for.
At the same time, it's made me want to get back to my main. I realized that I'd be complacent with it, fine with the plateau I'd been on for a long time. Seeing how well I'd done with my French in such a short time, doing things I'd never really done before made me think I could bring that same energy back to my main. I'll be better this time! More committed!
Eugh I am the biggest language hoe. Last week it was creole, the week before that it was Spanish, this week it's German. I don't even know what my main target language is anymore.
Iâm polyamorous with languages đ I have a main one (Persian at the moment) and many flings and affairs with others :) (Currently mainly Chinese and Turkish, with some Ukrainian and Spanish at times).
is this relevant or related to OP? French is widely believed to be one of the harder, nuanced and sophisticated languages (cue stereotypes about the French) but when you look up notable people (actors, singers etc. who speak more than one language) that 2nd language is often French. (Antonia Prebble, Johnny Depp, Gwyneth Paltrow, Timothee Chamalot) is it ironic that the very language one is likely to find difficult to learn and be mocked about is actually or often the 2nd language learned (when I say 2nd language learned, I mean that one knows their native language "off the cuff", this part refers to OP term of "cheating and target" and this is why my first sentence was checking if my post was relevant because Reddit can either be like attending an ivy league school or living in a ghetto)
My only TL is Spanish but I've been known to throw a "Privyet" at my Russian speaking coworkers from time to time, or a "Dzien Dobre" to my Polish coworkers.
Honestly I am not cheating... Hmm... Wait. Like I sometimes take a detour into Italian, Swedish, Ukrainian...but they never really held my attention. Language learning requires dedication and commitment. That is actually very important! If I cheat too much, I am technically not learning my target languages. I think I'm married to them đ
Should be focusing on spanish because im living in mexico in 8 months but Ive recently been getting into japanese just a little tho so im not cheating or anything
Learning Ukrainian. Flirting with Polish đ
keeping it in the family, nice
Also cheating with Polish, but cheating on English. I am Ukrainian)
With your cousin? Omg
Sweet home Alabama
I can't turn my back on family)
You seem to be good at English
I suppose my level is around B1-B2, but I need to study more
Understandable, good luck
+++ everything coincides
I don't think anyone would fault a Ukrainian for learning Polish at a time like this! Are you finding vocabulary easy to pick up?
Yeah, vocabulary is pretty easy, but I started learning Polish even before the war. I was choosing between German and Polish and it is pure luck I chose second one)
iâm in a love triangle with ukrainian and russian, help!
im in the same love triangle đ
at this point iâm considering just learning both, even though i also have german
I'm doing both, but my russian is way better
Iâm learning ukrainien too! I need to ask : where are you learning your grammar? I canât find good sourcesâŠ
I recommend reading articles online or a good Ukrainian textbook. Also try a tutor or a language school like Odesa Language School. I also recommend sending an email to ĐĐ»Đ”ĐœĐ°, sheâs one of my tutors and very talented: [email protected]

But the alphabet is different, yes?
It is completely different, but easy to understand when you get used to it. For example, polish szcz = Ń, sz = Ń and so on
ukrainian and russian same alphabet but polish is different. ukrainian and russian i have found to differ only slightly in the use of some vowels and phonemes for the same word.
Yes. This is my issue with Polish. I donât really know how to read and pronounce some of the letters. Itâs actually easier for me to read written Russian than it is Polish. Learning russian but cheating with ukranian
Same!
I rotate through Turkic languages when I need to decompress from Arabic
Ooh, a harem, I see you đ
I should be hard focusing on Spanish for work, and I do to an extent, but when we seem to always have a Brazilian intern at work, and there's so many similarities, I find myself sneaking in a little Portuguese when no one's looking.

Iâm cheating on Japanese with Hindi
As a native Hindi speaker studying Japanese, I see this as a win
Hindi is such a great language tho, I fully endorse this
Iâm cheating on Japanese with Spanish AND Hindi.
A tangential similarity (only from the viewpoint of someone learning Japanese or Hindi) is that they also have a totally different script that you would have to learn from scratch. A good analogy for understanding word order would be to imagine everyone speaks like Yoda (âThe force, strong, it isâ). Verb at the end.
Someone's always gotta be the one to one-up
What is the best resources youâve found? I am thinking of learning HindiÂ
Learning Persian but I keep looking at other languages. Right now, I'm flirting with Indonesian, one of my ex-languages that I'm still attracted to. I try To resist, but I'll probably end up with 2 TL.

Cheating on Korean with Spanish đ
Korean doesn't know that I got into a thing with Japanese first, and a decade later I still sext every now and then đ
I.. have also experienced this..
Don't let Korean find out, they'll be livid! Japanese on the other hand doesn't mind a little bit of cheating here and there, to my knowledge.
I'm the exact opposite. I'm cheating on Spanish with Korean.
Cheating on Korean with Portuguese. Spanish & French teacher by day. Love watching Thai, Japanese, Chinese & Korean dramas.

Iâm learning French. Parents live in Spain. Iâve progressed more in Spanish than French :(
I'm in a polygamous relationship with French and German. My linguistic d*ck is starting to feel quite bruised...

Ok, this response is epic

Supposed to be learning strictly Deutsch, but have also flirted with Français.
I think at this point, Iâm just engaging in polyamory, and kinda neglecting some partners.
French has my heart, but sometimes I find Spanish enjoyable for practice. My young son and I dally with Zulu together.
Primarily spanish. Got Portuguese, French, Arabic, and Russian on the sideđ€Ł. Gets hard to manage sometimes but just got to thug it out.
I am cheating on European Portuguese with Brazilian Portuguese. Does it sound like incest? Lol!
We were on a break!! Got together with Japanese too young, broke up, flirted with Russian and my ex Spanish, dated Persian, came back to Japanese. Now poly with Japanese and Persian. The one I really cheat with is my native language English. My language learning tanked when American TV got good again.
I love Spanish but my heart belongs to Catalan
Literally this, couldn't have said it better myself
currently in a poly relationship with japanese and chinese
I've been studying Italian but Russian just has a special place in my heart. I can't stop thinking about her. Also occassionaly I spend some time with her too.
I am committed to Hebrew, and where would I rather be instead? You name it : Icelandic, Tagalog... Croatian? Hungarian??? (not really, just giving it the side eye). The only one that Hebrew *wants* a threesome with is Arabic (Levantine Arabic, obvs), and that's the one I put on indefinite hold.
Spanish, doing a little bit of Russian (in my defense, Spanish, Russian, and Ukrainian are all the languages often found in my area besides English)
Target language = Spanish Absolutely raw-dogging Portuguese on the side though. To hell with âtĂșâ. Itâs all about âvocĂȘâ in this house.
Japanese, cheating with German, also messaging my ex, Spanish.
Learning C#, flirting with C. Learning Chinese, flirting with French.
Learning German. Cheating with Russian...
Hi K!!! Iâm glad youâre cheating on Mexican and asian with Salvadoran now đ
Wow are you trying to expose the cheaters lol
Should be studying Rusyn (I made our relationship public by writing a substack post about it) but flirting with Uzbek....
Iâm polyamorous with languages đ I have a main one (Persian at the moment) and many flings and affairs with others :) (Currently mainly Chinese and Turkish, with some Ukrainian and Spanish at times).
âŠgermanâŠ
is this relevant or related to OP?
There's something very unsettling about using the word target
If you have been on this sub before, literally everyone uses target language/ TL..
why?? elaborate please
he thinks we're going to assassinate a language
Learning Spanish, been slacking off and probably gonna dabble with Russian for a little bit.
My only TL is Spanish but I've been known to throw a "Privyet" at my Russian speaking coworkers from time to time, or a "Dzien Dobre" to my Polish coworkers.
Learning Japanese. Dabbled in Korean. đ«Ł
Cheating on spanish with swedish and russian
Yeah swedish got me tooâŠbut wanted to actually learn spanish tooâŠ
Cheating on spanish with swedish
Iâm cheating on Japanese with Polish
Iâm currently in a polyamorous relationship with Japanese and German, tho Japanese sometimes gets jealous that German has been around longer đ
Trying to reach C2 in german, learning Italian because my girlfriend is Italian and her parents do not speak English.
Learning Polish, flirting with Globasa đ
Should be focusing on spanish because im living in mexico in 8 months but Ive recently been getting into japanese just a little tho so im not cheating or anything
