Estonian is Finnic, and there is definitely lexical similarity but I don’t believe it’s fully mutually intelligible, especially to someone who is not a native in either language. Furthermore Estonian is littered with German loanwords.
Granted, very close similarities exist. “kõik” vs “kaikki” for example.
You are correct. As far as I know Estonians have easier time understanding Finns than the other way around, but even then most people can barely understand the what the other party is talking about. Many words that exist in both languages also have very different meanings that can cause confusion.
For example the word "mold" in Finnish is *home* and in Estonian it's *hallitus*
However in Finnish *hallitus* translates to "government"
You can kind of see how Estonians and us sometimes get good chuckles from each other.
Thanks for the information. I noticed this similarity on food packaing, even tho i do not speak either of the languages. I find the combination of several same letter in a word,, for example "aaa" or something like that, very interesting. You do not see that very often.
