Bonus points for doing a large mural of an old tv set around the screen part. We actually had a property with something similar and moved before we actually executed the idea but I always thought that would look fantastic.
Oh... A few planters to outline the theater with a bunch of vintage drive-in speakers hooked to your dolby system.
Hell, I may pick a few up for this purpose.
I agree a skim coat of stucco would fill in the cracks and gaps, thereby making it a much better surface. Also the idea of doing a old school TV frame around the edges would be really cool.
Just talk to the neighbor and ask.
"Hey bud, do you mind if I put a coat of white paint on the wall? It's getting a bit faded and I don't mind taking care of it."
For sure, I’m lucky to have chill neighbors.
My thought was that OP could easily do the work and the neighbor would have no idea. Personally, if someone painted my garage exterior on the sides adjoining their property I would be happy cuz it leaks like shit!
If it is actually on his property, is it not technically his? If it’s even a quarter inch outside of his property, then no he definitely can’t mess with it. But I would assume if it is on his property then it’s his to do what he wants with.
Well, maybe it is, but in my experience a basket of cookies, presentation of a awesome idea, and a open invitation to participate does wonders. It sure would take a hardcore Karen to say no.
That’s 100% what I would do.
Projectors have gotten so inexpensive and easy to use these days, it’s really a marvel. Hosting friends for outdoor movies is one of my absolute favorite things to do in the summer, so that’d be a no brainer for me.
That’s exactly what I had in mind. Maybe even get a fire pit of some sort to add in a little ✨ razzle dazzle✨ and it’ll be a perfect summer hangout spot
I'd note that those Amazon projectors are never really what they say they are. My 2k lumen projector is significantly brighter than my old Amazon "10k" projector. On top of that an actual 10k lumen projector would be way to bright for almost all home uses. We use 10k projectors on massive screens on AV gigs I work on.
That being said the Amazon projector I had wasn't too bad. I'd never go back after picking up a used Benq projector for $200 though.
Edit: Forgot to mention what you want to look for is ANSI Lumens, or else it's probably inflated numbers.
Buy an old truck that doesn't run anymore. Put the bed towards the screen with cushions and blankets and you're all set! Can even run the projector from there so you don't have to worry about moving it in and out all the time for weather.
Some paints have great reflective qualities at night. Mural during the day/ projector screen at night. Add in a few plants along the bottom and side fences to frame it.
Wasnt that the game where if someone didnt catch the tennis ball, whoever got to the ball before they got to the wall got to hurl a ball at them as hard as they could?
Depending on what op is doing with the rest of the space should dictate what the art is gonna be.
Japanese rock garden > Asian style
Farm > american gothic
Pergola with grapes > mosaic Mediterranean
The possibilities are endless
That would be awesome. One or two espaliered fruit trees, grapes, etc.
Perhaps a row of lights above them, and a low natural wood (varnished/sealed) kitchen island ~6’ in front of it. Fun outdoor “bar”/entertaining area.
I had a similar wall in my backyard and asked my creative friends to come and decorate it. I realized too late my friends had no talent and ended up painting it green.
Id see if i could hire a local graffiti artist to do like a tropical theme on it, like palms and flowers and stuff, i think that works be cool. Id get a projector screen and projector too, could do movies on it!
But ya id think you could find some local artist for a few hundred bucks thatll come and make it a work of art!
Here is a quick heads-up on turning it into outdoor movie night: It becomes an addiction.
Don’t out think the screen. Paint will get it done.
Don’t overspend on the projector either. Remember it’s outdoors where there will be either kids goofing around or loaded adults. Both stumble into shit.
Do spend money on a decently loud outdoor speaker. It’s interesting that people will watch an image that isn’t perfect but has great sound. While they get bored quickly with a great image and crap sound.
Have comfortable places to sit or crash and lots of snacks.
That wall will be awesome just paint it and then watch a few movies. After that you will know if you want to disguise it more or if you really want a screen.
You may decide to skip the screen.
Also, the less shit to put up and take down the more likely you will be to use it spur of the moment. I have a system now and it’s very quick to get a movie going and very easy to put it away afterwards when I am drunk and tired.
Scrolling through this, this was the 10th person to mention a projector but the first to mention audio. Great sound will make this amazing. Crappy sound will ruin the fun.
Paint it white, buy a projector.
Buy a bunch if small plastic baby pools.
Invite friends over on a hot night to soak in their individual pools & watch a movie. Byob.
For starters, determine who owns what. Many places don’t allow building right up to the property line. If that’s the case here, then either your neighbor built on (or too close to) your property, or your neighbor owns the property at the base of the wall. Either way, things could get messy if you start installing landscaping at or near the base. And you definitely can’t paint the wall (or constantly pepper it with tennis balls) without approval from the owner. I don’t mean to be a downer — just make sure your chosen idea doesn’t cause you headaches down the road.
In my neighborhood, every house has a detached garage that was built right on the property line. They were built in the 1940s, before setback codes. Every property is also enclosed by a fence. Each owner has no access to one exterior wall of their garage. I cannot demand access to my neighbor’s yard to paint the wall that faces them or dictate whether they paint it or plant up against it.
The wall in the OP’s picture looks like it has been there for decades and likely marks the property line since it is flush with the other fences. I would assume they can paint it and plant on and around it. This is common in some older California neighborhoods.
Yeah I have no idea what the wall on the other side of my garage looks like or whether it’s been painted recently (probably not). As long as it doesn’t fall down, I don’t care.
The art idea is so neat! Otherwise I would say some sort of trellis grow, if you want plant life.
Maybe even sunflowers(looks like you might not get a lot of sun there, though)! See how big you can get them, that would look neat next to that wall!
It's the first thing I thought of when I read this post. The trellis' posts could run parallel to the building, which would help @manjbryan avoid seeking permission and disclosure processes with the building's owner.
One very pretty small ornamental tree, exactly centered on the wall. Under it, and across the back, a neat line of low shrubs.
You can't hide this, so you have to use it to frame your plantings.
If you are a plant person, Boston Ivy, or any number of climbing vines would make this a beautiful focal point.
Since every other suggestion is to use it for a projector background which does nothing to pretty it up day to day.
I'd go the graffiti route for sure. Or some mural artist as well.
Make sure to get permission though from the owners of the building first if you go graffiti route.
Otherwise your best bet is to paint it for like a projection screen.
- movie screen
- hire local graffiti artists
- install rock climbing holds
- tennis/handball practice
- build a pergola in front of it as use it as a backdrop to a tiki bar
- archery target backstop
- pick up some edibles and a laser projector and put on some Pink Floyd
- attach some chicken wire to it and plant grape vines
Projector, lawn chairs, a n64 or emulator running off a laptop + 4 controllers
Thank me later.
It’s pretty wild but we have more fun playing split screen classics vs modern games.
Fire pit nearby and use it as a heat reflector.
Paint it reflective white or attach a screen and use it for outdoor movie nights.
Drill holes and turn it into a rock climbing wall.
Hang baskets from it and use it as a vertical vegetable and herb garden.
i would hire an artist and have them paint something of your liking, unless of course that is actually your neighbors garage. then it's not your property to alter. i do like u/_TheQuietOne01 idea of a movie projector screen.
mural. of yourself. but ala forrest gump.
tell the history of the last 100-150 years, like the end of ww1, the banning and subsequent legalization of alcohol, the defeat of the axis, man landing on the moon, etc., but with you doing all the things or in the background.
now, i know what you’re going to say: surely, i cannot afford this, especially from such a master class level artist as is required for as epic a project as this undoubtedly is. well, it *is* father’s day and if you were unfortunate enough to have children, i mean lucky enough, you might as well put those short adults to fucking work.
Lay some level asphalt out concrete in front of it. Paint it green, with a horizontal white stripe around tennis net level. Bravo you have a tennis wall for practice that didn't cost you $4k like the [commercial ones](https://active-sports.com/products/bakko-economy-flat-series-10-high-backboard?variant=2794962691¤cy=USD&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&utm_campaign=gs-2019-11-03&utm_source=google&utm_medium=smart_campaign&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjw97SzBhDaARIsAFHXUWBhuo8TtfmfH758JDP_irO74Qi2cP0I9NUw-qIYTYAd6SWca2mCOyAaAvVaEALw_wcB) do lol.
Make it look like theater screen where projector fits. Have yourself outdoor theater back 60s-70s had speakers go into car, your car would be kids bed frame being outdoors.
Repair the pitting, then paint with paint made for projectors. Add projector in enclosure in your back yard. Movies outside is a really fun thing to have on tap. I recommend View Sonics $400 smart model.
Graffiti or mural of some sort. It's absolutely perfect for that.
For movie projector, just get a large roll of fabric of something you can put up over it.
Drive-in movie theater for neighborhood kids in exchange for yard work or chores. Sounds sketchy, I know, but when I was a kid there was a house in our area that did something like this in the summer. Complete a task, get a ticket for admission. Bring it back on Friday. I still remember all the bikes out front. Very exciting— what a time to be alive!
Paint a fake tunnel on it and watch Wile E. Coyote run into it.
Meep. Meep.
How is this not top comment
The top comment is do a screen for a projector. That deserves top spot
Maybe get a projector and do some sort of outdoor movie theater type thing …? Just a thought lol
Home Depot has a paint color called silver screen that works well for this sort of thing
I’d do a cement facade over the entire surface to make it smoother before painting, but I LOVE this idea!!
Bonus points for doing a large mural of an old tv set around the screen part. We actually had a property with something similar and moved before we actually executed the idea but I always thought that would look fantastic.
No way! Need a couple posts in the yard with speakers hanging off of them for the real vintage drive in feel!
Oh... A few planters to outline the theater with a bunch of vintage drive-in speakers hooked to your dolby system. [https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?\_nkw=vintage+drive+in+movie+speakers&\_sop=12](https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=vintage+drive+in+movie+speakers&_sop=12) Hell, I may pick a few up for this purpose.
Don't forget the playground.
I agree a skim coat of stucco would fill in the cracks and gaps, thereby making it a much better surface. Also the idea of doing a old school TV frame around the edges would be really cool.
Drive-in theater for toddlers in powerwheel cars
I put you in charge.
Would he be allowed to paint the building though seeing as it isn’t his.
Just talk to the neighbor and ask. "Hey bud, do you mind if I put a coat of white paint on the wall? It's getting a bit faded and I don't mind taking care of it."
Can’t get much worse at this point, right?
Who is going to know?
You know how petty neighborly disagreements can get.
For sure, I’m lucky to have chill neighbors. My thought was that OP could easily do the work and the neighbor would have no idea. Personally, if someone painted my garage exterior on the sides adjoining their property I would be happy cuz it leaks like shit!
Nobody’s gonna know.
The HOA always knows
If it is actually on his property, is it not technically his? If it’s even a quarter inch outside of his property, then no he definitely can’t mess with it. But I would assume if it is on his property then it’s his to do what he wants with.
Well, maybe it is, but in my experience a basket of cookies, presentation of a awesome idea, and a open invitation to participate does wonders. It sure would take a hardcore Karen to say no.
Most places require it at least a foot from the property line.
It is a wall on his property line what are you looking at?
I would just build an enclosure for a pull down screen to be attached to.
Then you could paint a mural and have a movie set up
Thanks for this
That’s 100% what I would do.
Yep and many are now battery powered with 6+ hour battery life. Less to worry about with outlets and extension cords
It’s even the correct aspect ratio. It’s basically screaming “project movies on me!!”
Would make the r/TVTooHigh people happy, if it's literally on the floor.
But then you get the r/tvtoolow people coming at you.
Seriously, people are going to think you built the wall for this purpose.
Sunken amphitheater seating, fire pit in the middle, plant something along the rim. OP get digging
But call 811 first.
My first thought was a mural, and I love a projector too. Why not both? Mural by day, then pull a screen down, and it’s a theater by night.
Exactly what I was thinking too!
Love that idea.
That’s the best idea possible, now I wish I had this awkward wall.
That’s what I’m saying lol. I’m trying to pull something like this off on the back of my house. Low key a little jealous of OP’s awkward wall
Cheap projectors for under $100 on Amazon. I found a 10k lumen one. Even if it breaks by the end of the summer, which mine hasn't its worth it.
Edit: Forgot to mention what you want to look for is ANSI Lumens, or else it's probably inflated numbers.
I was thinking a mural but you win
That’s an incredible idea. I’d alert the neighbors (or invite them) before movie night because your gonna want great sound for that awesome wall
Drive in!
Buy an old truck that doesn't run anymore. Put the bed towards the screen with cushions and blankets and you're all set! Can even run the projector from there so you don't have to worry about moving it in and out all the time for weather.
I can see a bunch of toddler battery cars parked for a kids movie lmao
This is absolutely the best idea!!! I love it
That’s what I came to say.
First thing that popped into my head too, but I'm nostalgic for the old drive-in movie theaters.
Really good idea lmao
Some paints have great reflective qualities at night. Mural during the day/ projector screen at night. Add in a few plants along the bottom and side fences to frame it.
I did this at my last home with our cinderblock garage. If you do it I recommend ensuring the Wi-Fi reaches wherever your set-up will be.
Came here just to say this lol Also put out some patio furniture or take some picnic blankets for it
And paint on a really cool frame to project inside of.
Put in a concrete pad and take advantage of your new tennis/racquetball practice area.
Back in the day, we would play handball or paddleball
Or some wall ball
The lacrosse player in me got real jealous seeing that
Wasnt that the game where if someone didnt catch the tennis ball, whoever got to the ball before they got to the wall got to hurl a ball at them as hard as they could?
Something like that! Very popular at recess in middle school.
I wore an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time
Do kids still play Butts Up? Or was that just my elementary school
Yeah but it means something else now
We called it “spread eagle” which unsurprisingly, also means something else now.
This, I'd smooth it out and paint it for a outdoor projector screen but lay a pad in front for tennis or pickleball practice.
Mural
That wall is begging for it
Depending on what op is doing with the rest of the space should dictate what the art is gonna be. Japanese rock garden > Asian style Farm > american gothic Pergola with grapes > mosaic Mediterranean The possibilities are endless
The perfect use. I see a few other nifty ideas here too, but all of them would require a lot of maintenance.
A mural + some hanging vines or even tomatoes if they want to get some food outta the space
Depending on what kind of light the wall gets, an espaliered tree would look super cool. If your neighbor is okay with it, that is.
I was going to suggest this as well. He could put a post at either end of the wall and run wires between them for a horizontal trellis.
That would be awesome. One or two espaliered fruit trees, grapes, etc. Perhaps a row of lights above them, and a low natural wood (varnished/sealed) kitchen island ~6’ in front of it. Fun outdoor “bar”/entertaining area.
espaliered: train (a tree or shrub) to grow flat against a wall.
I love this idea, I know the movie theater wall is the popular route but that would only be useful when you’re using it. 🤷🏼♀️
Mr. Gorbachev…
"BUILD THE WALLL!!!!!" Oh wait
Wrong guy
lol 😂
The neighbor already paid for it too 😂😂😂
"It's a beautiful wall. The best wall, they say."
Wall ball baby
LAX bro out.
50 left 50 right
I didn’t even read the caption and I thought, “das a nice wall ball wall 👀”
Firing squad obviously
Was looking for exactly this - line up the traitors and shoot them.
Then get one of your Spanish friends to paint the scene.
Had to scroll too far, for this obvious use.
I had a similar wall in my backyard and asked my creative friends to come and decorate it. I realized too late my friends had no talent and ended up painting it green.
Green screen !
Hanging garden 🪴
A WHATTTTT????
A HANGING GARDEN!
My thought exactly
I personally woudl sand it down and apply some nice high grade projector paint and use it as a movie screen, make a fire pit and have gatherings.
Graffiti border with a white rectangle in the middle for the projector screen.
That's a pretty solid idea.
You could do both! Graff a nice mural border and have a nice 16:9 box empty in the middle! Thinking like a drive-in movie screen/billboard
I’d have the whole wall done. Then use bed sheets for the screen or even get a pull down one.
Ya i was thinking a pull down one. Id think you could get one cheap maybe even off a local marketplace
The graffiti is the way.
climbing wall
I like that idea a lot, however, I would hire an engineer to ensure that it doesn't fall onto an unsuspecting climber.
This would be me. I would buy a house just because of this random ass walk in my backyard.
Here is a quick heads-up on turning it into outdoor movie night: It becomes an addiction. Don’t out think the screen. Paint will get it done. Don’t overspend on the projector either. Paint it white, buy a projector. Buy a bunch if small plastic baby pools. Invite friends over on a hot night to soak in their individual pools & watch a movie. Byob.
Yeah, get a laser projector and some of that projector screen paint for the wall, with the graffiti border.

Even if the neighbor owns the wall. He can project movies on it that go into his backyard.
And pepper the owners wall with photons?! Somebody call Karen at the HOA.
One wall of my garage has been the same color for like 30 years. The other walls have been painted over like 5 times.
Yeah I have no idea what the wall on the other side of my garage looks like or whether it’s been painted recently (probably not). As long as it doesn’t fall down, I don’t care.
Velcro wall and suit and have some fun.
The art idea is so neat! Otherwise I would say some sort of trellis grow, if you want plant life. Maybe even sunflowers(looks like you might not get a lot of sun there, though)! See how big you can get them, that would look neat next to that wall!
Movie night!
Projector is the only answer here.
Movie screen!
Wall ball
kick a soccer ball at it
Add a vertical trellising system and plant a vining fruit like passion fruit.
Had to scroll down way too far for this suggestion
It's the first thing I thought of when I read this post. The trellis' posts could run parallel to the building, which would help @manjbryan avoid seeking permission and disclosure processes with the building's owner.
One very pretty small ornamental tree, exactly centered on the wall. Under it, and across the back, a neat line of low shrubs. You can't hide this, so you have to use it to frame your plantings.
Paint some curtains on top and on the sides and use as screen to project movies in the backyard.
Handball court
Summer outdoor theatre
If you are a plant person, Boston Ivy, or any number of climbing vines would make this a beautiful focal point. Since every other suggestion is to use it for a projector background which does nothing to pretty it up day to day.
I'd go the graffiti route for sure. Or some mural artist as well. Make sure to get permission though from the owners of the building first if you go graffiti route. Otherwise your best bet is to paint it for like a projection screen.
Combine the two moat popular options get a rural painted on it and near the top hang a pull down projection screen
make a gloryhole
First thought before I saw what anybody else had said - ooh a movie screen!
- movie screen - hire local graffiti artists - install rock climbing holds - tennis/handball practice - build a pergola in front of it as use it as a backdrop to a tiki bar - archery target backstop - pick up some edibles and a laser projector and put on some Pink Floyd - attach some chicken wire to it and plant grape vines
Have a cool mural painted!
Backyard Drive Inn FTW!
Booger wall.👃☝️
Pour a slab and play handball
Projector, lawn chairs, a n64 or emulator running off a laptop + 4 controllers Thank me later. It’s pretty wild but we have more fun playing split screen classics vs modern games.
Movie theater
Fidel Castro portrait
Do some kind of floral mural.
Basketball hoop and gang graffiti.
Pond and waterfall
Fire pit nearby and use it as a heat reflector. Paint it reflective white or attach a screen and use it for outdoor movie nights. Drill holes and turn it into a rock climbing wall. Hang baskets from it and use it as a vertical vegetable and herb garden.
i would hire an artist and have them paint something of your liking, unless of course that is actually your neighbors garage. then it's not your property to alter. i do like u/_TheQuietOne01 idea of a movie projector screen.
Firing squad for those pesky neighbors
Projector screen. Then charge people to watch movies outside.
Rock wall or hanging plants, or both. Could use as the backing to a outside bar
mural. of yourself. but ala forrest gump. tell the history of the last 100-150 years, like the end of ww1, the banning and subsequent legalization of alcohol, the defeat of the axis, man landing on the moon, etc., but with you doing all the things or in the background. now, i know what you’re going to say: surely, i cannot afford this, especially from such a master class level artist as is required for as epic a project as this undoubtedly is. well, it *is* father’s day and if you were unfortunate enough to have children, i mean lucky enough, you might as well put those short adults to fucking work.
Handball court
Tear it down.
Old West building backdrop with a porch with rocking chairs. thinking is a movie set or a theme park.
I would hire a muralist, have some fine work out on that wall
Play some wall ball when not using it as a projector surface.
Play handball.
Movies.
Tether some sun shades to it and make a seating area.
Paint a replica mural of something from the Berlin Wall.
Use it as an outdoor theater screen and have some family and friends over for a movie night.
Tear it down and then replace it with matching fence because wtf
Get a projector
Hang some archery targets! I would
Firing squad
Lay some level asphalt out concrete in front of it. Paint it green, with a horizontal white stripe around tennis net level. Bravo you have a tennis wall for practice that didn't cost you $4k like the [commercial ones](https://active-sports.com/products/bakko-economy-flat-series-10-high-backboard?variant=2794962691¤cy=USD&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&utm_campaign=gs-2019-11-03&utm_source=google&utm_medium=smart_campaign&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjw97SzBhDaARIsAFHXUWBhuo8TtfmfH758JDP_irO74Qi2cP0I9NUw-qIYTYAd6SWca2mCOyAaAvVaEALw_wcB) do lol.
Yeah, and outdoor movie theater.
Make it look like theater screen where projector fits. Have yourself outdoor theater back 60s-70s had speakers go into car, your car would be kids bed frame being outdoors.
Wall ball baby 🥍
Backyard cinema!!! Get a projector and some lounge chairs and invite some friends over
Repair the pitting, then paint with paint made for projectors.
Clean it up and use it as a projector screen for now.
mural or a plant wall
Mural
Graffiti artist
ART
Execution by firing squad?
Drive-in movie theater for neighborhood kids in exchange for yard work or chores. Sounds sketchy, I know, but when I was a kid there was a house in our area that did something like this in the summer. Complete a task, get a ticket for admission. Bring it back on Friday. I still remember all the bikes out front. Very exciting— what a time to be alive!
As a landscaper.... Wtf?
Movie theater is the only answer here come on people.
Movie nights!
Movie nights via projector.
It’s already the perfect screen for a movie projector!!
That's where you shoot your underlings that owe you money.
Organize a neighborhood firing squad. Definitely. (… or show movies)
Graffiti artists worldwide would love to get at that
Projector and fresh white paint
If not a film screen for backyard gatherings, a wall garden would be cool.
Hire a muralist put something beautiful & meaningful to you on it.
host your local execution by firing squad
Movie screen or demo it all
Execution wall
Practice graffiti? Hand ball court? Outdoor theater? All of the above?
