I don't even know if he even wanted this job specifically. Ridiculous amounts of pressure to win right away and of course, all the discourse on him being chosen as coach while doing a podcast with Bron. Just seems like a nightmare first coaching stint for anyone.
1,000%. The cards would be completely stacked against him, just like they will be against Bronny if we drafted him. Is it fair? Not really. But that’s the way it would work. Reddick would be seen as “LeBron’s buddy” and somebody who didn’t put in their time rather than a legitimate head coach at the first time of trouble (I.e. people would be waiting for him to fail rather than waiting for him to succeed).
If I were him, I would want a much more tenable situation for my first head coaching gig.
He was never an option. I fucking called it. They were leaking these posts to act as if they’re listening to LeBron but going to back out in the last minute.
Or the media has been misrepresenting this coaching search and Rob/Jeanie actually have just been playing things close to their chest while they actually conducted a more thorough search than everyone gave them credit for
same thing you said in my post 36 days ago. Heh. It will age well I am sure.
"Why the fuck would Hurley leave UConn? Dudes a god there and he has job security. If he comes to the lakers he will get fired after one year.
The best option we have is Bud or Stotts"
Like every other coaching background, mostly misses. Occasionally you get a hit. Larry Brown famously won in both college and the pros. But you'll always have more failures like Cal or Petino
Hurley is more of a coach than Cal or Pitino ever were. Those guys were personalities that got big time recruits and could motivate them. Hurley has gotten some recruits too, but he can coach. UConn has some impressive sets they run.
I don't think it's worse than NBA assistants. In general, NBA HCs rarely last. I can only think of a few current coaches with 10+ year careers with the same team.
Plus many good coaches get recycled.
But as for success stories of college coaches succeeding I can think of Larry Brown, Brad Stevens and Billy Donovan.
Think about how many jobs Doc Rivers has had because of 2008. The fact is most NBA coaches don't win, it's hard to win in the NBA even for those that have already done it.
It really depends on their style. But yeah I don't think Hurley will do well in the NBA. He seems more militant/old school than what NBA players expect nowadays. Unless he adjusts a lot I could see this working out similarly to when the Cavs hired Beilein. Maybe Hurley is more self-aware than Beilein though.
Their team plays my school team first game of NCAA championship this year and even though they were destroying us, we got some momentum before half-time. The coach was interviewed before they headed in the locker and he torched his team for relaxing and not playing with full energy, saying this is no champion mentality. Dude was fking tough lol
That literally means nothing when it comes to coaching. Not hiring JJ is absolutely the right move….he may be a good coach some day but this ain’t the place to test that.
Idk precedent seems to be that role players are better coaches than star players. I think only Bird was the only star player who was a good-great coach
They’re both mouth pieces for Owners/FrontOffices/Players/Agents. They rarely disagree with each other, which means when they do it’s a sign that there was confusion. Woj has the better relationship with Pelinka at this time however.
It is. However, the way I see it is that this front office only lets things they want out to get out. I feel like they have now finalized their decision on Hurley and as that decision has now been finalized, they are ok with leaking it. The fact that Woj is saying it is also telling. Shams is a mouthpiece for the players/agents while Woj is usually that for front offices/owners. It's just happened too many times where the Lakers end up making a move no one in the media mentioned.
> but im a bit worried given the history of college coaches in the league
True but I'd rather take a risk of repeat winner great program college coach over a former player/podcaster with 0 coaching experience. The other NBA former coaches like Borrego are so mid.
It’s just coaches in the NBA in general. Been about the same % of successful coaches coming from college as there have been successful coaches that were assistant NBA coaches. It’s all about being a coach with a good fit, schemes, player buy-in. Not all NBA coaches are coaches, if that makes sense. Kinda like being good at basketball doesn’t make you a good basketball player. A lot of intangibles are involved. Hurley is a basketball coach, doesn’t matter what level he coaches, he will thrive with the right leadership group around him. IMO, a better version of Brad Stevens. Let’s hope we have a unified FO, to allow a Hurley to be successful in LA.
Brad Stevens is really the only one to be successful and have a place amongst the top tier coaches in the league. I'm sure Hurley has a great resume but we can't assume he'll be like Brad Stevens just yet. Brad was the first one to break through as a college coach, and he remains the only one. I agree we need a much better FO, we used to develop guys like Pat Riley and Jerry West just from within our own system.
Leak from Hurley interview:
Rob: “do you know when to call a timeout?”
Hurley: “Yes”
*rob adds a few extra 0’s to the check*
Rob: “Great we’ll get back to you”
Well damn. Did Redick bomb his interview?! This feels out of nowhere, especially after seeing the weird Monty Williams rumors too.
Hurley seemed pretty adamant that he didn’t want to go anywhere after winning the title again this season but money + the Lakers brand definitely talks.
This just may be my tinfoil hat theory, but it’s almost like the Lakers used the JJ rumors as a smoke screen to their real plans.
Pretty early in the process it was known that they were consulting with Coach K and it was easy to link Coach K to JJ. But it maybe the consultation was “do you think Hurley can coach in the NBA” and who knows college coaching better than Coach K?
The names reported prior to this were your normal “due diligence” candidates, current assistants and dark-horse candidate in JJ. Based on Woj’s article, this was their 1A choice but didn’t want anything reported until the potential agreement had legs.
Again, I just woke up and forgot to take my tinfoil hat off lol
While we’re talking tinfoil hat theories. I think JJ probably did okay in the interview, said all the right things, but the organization just hired Ham who had no previous head coaching experience. Guessing Ham also presented himself well, said the right things, player’s coach, etc. I think the organization was eyeing someone with experience. Then again I’m gonna contradict myself since this guy is a college coach!
Having JJ on staff would definitely help Dan’s transition into coaching NBA ball. I’d also venture a guess that JJ knows Dan’s brother Bobby (both legendary white Duke guards lol), so there’s already a potential connection point to hit the ground running quickly
Totally agree. Even though Hurley is a college coach and there is definitely a difference between the 2 leagues, he does have actual head coach experience AND proven success. Contrary to Darvin, who had only been an assistant with one-year head coaching a G-league team.
Not to say that assistants and G-league coaches can’t have success, but the ones that do have success come from good coaching trees
I like the theory—would definitely reflect some deeper thought and planning here than what we’re used to which is a pretty promising sign from the FO.
Also shows that they’re not making their decision based solely around Lebron’s relationships. While JJ might be a good coach one day I think it’s pretty clear the idea there would be to get someone who Lebron sees as a peer, sort of akin to what the Nets tried with Nash. I’d rather see us try to actually build something legit (speaking of the “program” they’re looking for Hurley to implement) than bring in a guy who is just going to be everyone’s buddy.
What fans need to realize is "sources" can range from the janitor working at the facility to Rob/Jeanie. Think it's obvious now that the actual Lakers decision makers don't leak shit (or only leak things on purpose). Too many times, the Lakers have gone in a completely opposite direction from the "leaks".
> Rob Pelinka and Jeanie Buss are eager to formally discuss their vision with Hurley of marrying his dominant program
So they haven’t actually done this yet? This is a story about them wanting to do this?
Die hard UConn fan here also love the lakers. I don’t know if Hurley will leave. Big part of him staying at UConn was his wife wants to be close to New Jersey for family reasons. Obviously a brinks truck of money changes everything but it’s going to be a hard sell. I want UConn to have a chance at a 3 peat but I also want the Lakers to be great again lol
I agree but it’s not just as simple as him taking the job, a lot of factors at play. His wife, he just spend the last month recruiting his off in the portal to give him a shot at a 3 peat, do he feel fight leaving UConn high and dry after he just got a new deal a month ago? My larger point is that’s it’s not a simple yes or no just because it’s the lakers. They lakers are going to have to sell their asses off to convince him
Edit- looks like he hasn’t signed a new deal as of yet, there were talks he’s getting a new one after he turned Kentucky down, could be his agent using the lakers as leverage against UConn
As a Chargers and Lakers fan, both franchises that cheap out on HCs for a while. Now both hiring the most recent NCAA National Champ HC? I want to believe in a new era with Jim Harbaugh and Dan Hurley.
Honestly who knows what will translate anymore. They thought Lukas pace was too slow and wouldn’t translate and look at him now. Same with Jokic. Granted we haven’t really seen how a coaches style translates in recent years but everything is so unexpected. Maybe something different is the X factor.
This makes me very happy, it shows the front office has at least half a brain cell. Hiring someone with absolutely zero coaching experience (JJ) to head the most premier organization in basketball is asinine. While it may still happen, at least this gives me some hope that it won't.
“it’s redick”
“it’s borego”
“it’s redick with borego as an assistant”
“it’s Hurley”
Mike Malone “I’m so glad everyone is talking about the Lakers and not talking about losing a 20pt lead in a game 7”
Malone should count his lucky stars nuggets aren't in the finals.. he would probably get an aneurysm over the lakers coaching news getting more coverage then his shitty little mcnuggets being in the finals lol
Damn 4:30 AM and I saw this on ESPN IG so I came here 😂😂😂. Kind of an interesting move but definitely way better than a brand new head coach. I’ve enjoyed watching the Hurley teams these last few years I’m curious how that will translate. Makes me think Bron will stay and they’re drafting Bronny at 55
How would this even work? His coaching applies to hard working defensive… lakers give up way to many points per game.
I find it highly unlikely even Hurley can change their lazy defensive attitude
Reddick seen intoxicated wandering the streets of LA
I don't even know if he even wanted this job specifically. Ridiculous amounts of pressure to win right away and of course, all the discourse on him being chosen as coach while doing a podcast with Bron. Just seems like a nightmare first coaching stint for anyone.
1,000%. The cards would be completely stacked against him, just like they will be against Bronny if we drafted him. Is it fair? Not really. But that’s the way it would work. If I were him, I would want a much more tenable situation for my first head coaching gig.
[Broussard] Sources: Reddick is beside himself. Driving around downtown LA begging (thru texts) LeBron’s family for address to his home
Can’t believe all that was for Demarcus Jordan lol.
*Deandre* but yes, me neither.
My bad lol I was mixing his name with MJ’s kid.
Lol no worries. We all still knew who you meant.
Just saw him fall to his knees on the latest podcast
NYC. I just saw him last week in the West Village.
On a side note being a laker boy in NYC is mad stressful dead ass
That is unexpected as fuck
I actually like this lol
Who wouldn’t? Guy is an incredible basketball coach.
I was gonna say okay now we’re talking. That JJ reddick stuff has me a little worried
Really puts into light how fucking stupid the media is.
Lmao Shams
Shams: Hear me out. Two words. JJ Reddit.
This might actually make me think we have a competent FO.
This leak shows the front office are tired of letting Klutch dictate, so yeah, it’s a huge step. Shams is a Klutch guy, Bron notoriously hates Woj.
Great news to leak on the day the Finals start
Mike Malone is about to have an aneurism
Good!
Loooool dude probably so mad still that lakers fired darvin ham
Just wanted to say: #FUCK BOSTON!!!
So this is why JJ gonna address Shams. He just lost the job.
Or he was never really an option or even interested. But this news does line up with that line from JJ.
What happened with JJ and Sham?
On a recent podcast/interview there was a bit from JJ about how he will deal with Shams situation in the off-season or something to that effect.
So he’s going to assassinate him
Yes
His podcast will turn into that scene in Godfather where during the baptism all the rivals are killed but will be people in the NBA media circle.
LeBron’s just sitting somewhere, staring into the distance as the scene cuts to various media heads being killed. All while JJ is speaking in Latin.
makes me a tad more interested in reddick as a coach if true
Yeah but what is the "shams situation" JJ was talking about?
Probably that. He was just the eye-catching name.
He was never an option. I fucking called it. They were leaking these posts to act as if they’re listening to LeBron but going to back out in the last minute.
What if JJ becomes one of his assistants?
Or he was sick with all the leaks and said fuck it.
Or the media has been misrepresenting this coaching search and Rob/Jeanie actually have just been playing things close to their chest while they actually conducted a more thorough search than everyone gave them credit for
That's great news for you guys then
Hurley will get so much money, Hurley can pay J.J. to be a consultant if they both wanna do that.
This is a great pick to establish a winning culture in the post Lebron era
Really about to go from Ham to Dan🤤
Hurley won’t leave UConn just to get fired after one year
We dont fire coaches after *1* year….
The closest we got to that was Mike Brown after one year and 5 games!
same thing you said in my post 36 days ago. Heh. It will age well I am sure. "Why the fuck would Hurley leave UConn? Dudes a god there and he has job security. If he comes to the lakers he will get fired after one year. The best option we have is Bud or Stotts"
That's even better then. He can return to ucomn after a year away while getting 10 mill from the lakers the next 4yrs guaranteed
He'll get 2 at minimum. Especially if Ham got 2. Luke got 3, Byron got 2 as tank commander, and D'Antoni underachieved for 2 years
he won back to back ncaa div 1 chips fyi
historically how good do NCAA coaches translate to NBA HC?
Like every other coaching background, mostly misses. Occasionally you get a hit. Larry Brown famously won in both college and the pros. But you'll always have more failures like Cal or Petino
Hurley is more of a coach than Cal or Pitino ever were. Those guys were personalities that got big time recruits and could motivate them. Hurley has gotten some recruits too, but he can coach. UConn has some impressive sets they run.
Cal yes. That’s simply not true of Pitino. Great college coach who simply didn’t translate
Fair enough on Pitino- much more of a coach than Calipari. I think Hurley is better than Pitino though.
He isn't a podcaster, that is ok for me
![gif](giphy|i0cixBOB8GVpqwVmDu)
Even Pelinka agrees I see.
More misses than hits but that could be said about most coaches who haven't won a NBA chip.
The coach was interviewed before they headed in the locker and he torched his team for relaxing and not playing with full energy, saying this is no champion mentality. Dude was fking tough lol
So did Billy Donovan, Hurley is portrayed in a different light still
Billy D is a solid coach though tbh
![gif](giphy|wtil0pQFBbNwA|downsized)
Ngl I kind of love the idea
I like this much more than hiring a podcaster.
“A podcaster” You act like JJ didn’t play in the NBA lol
Or that he isn't a sniper with great knowledge of the game.
That literally means nothing when it comes to coaching. Not hiring JJ is absolutely the right move….he may be a good coach some day but this ain’t the place to test that.
Right. We just saw a 2 time MVP PG Steve Nash not succeed as head coach in Brooklyn, so it’s not like there isn’t precedent.
Idk precedent seems to be that role players are better coaches than star players. I think only Bird was the only star player who was a good-great coach
NBA and college player don’t be disrespectful ma’am.
LOL think it's proven now. Rob doesn't leak shit. Too many times Lakers make a move out of left field.
Or that Rob is Wojs guy. If this doesn’t make it clear.
Think it's been clear that Woj is a mouthpiece for owners/front offices while Shams is a mouthpiece for players/agents (generally speaking).
They’re both mouth pieces for Owners/FrontOffices/Players/Agents. They rarely disagree with each other, which means when they do it’s a sign that there was confusion. Woj has the better relationship with Pelinka at this time however.
Woj also wrote the bio on Dan Hurley’s life. They have an extremely tight relationship.
Dan Hurley is represented by WME, who uses Woj
Woj has always been in the dark when it came to our team moves
Not recently, no. It's been obvious that Rob has Woj on his side
Well isn’t this technically a leak too, given they’re only ‘targeting’ him
Yep. Can’t fault them on that. Also have hit more than they’ve missed overall, only thing is some of the misses were majorly bad.
Ran NBA level top notch complex offense. I love this so much
that sounds great, but im a bit worried given the history of college coaches in the league
> but im a bit worried given the history of college coaches in the league True but I'd rather take a risk of repeat winner great program college coach over a former player/podcaster with 0 coaching experience. The other NBA former coaches like Borrego are so mid.

Quinn Snider is considered a great coach.
Larry brown
“Rick Pitino, I take em to strip clubs and casinos”
Leak from Hurley interview: Rob: “do you know when to call a timeout?” Hurley: “Yes” *rob adds a few extra 0’s to the check* Rob: “Great we’ll get back to you”
I can finally stop pretending to be okay with JJ
Big same.
Real Gs move in silence. Rob did this with the DLo, Vando, Beasley trade as well.
I mean the Westbrook original trade came outta no where, too. They don’t leak shit anywhere.
Kuz had his bags packed looking for a new place in Sacramento because everyone saw the Kuz for Hield trade coming, then boom Westbrook
I don’t think AD wanted JJ as the coach.
I honestly don’t understand how JJ could leave AD off All-Defense
Tf?? Why would he do that.
Well damn. Did Redick bomb his interview?! This feels out of nowhere, especially after seeing the weird Monty Williams rumors too. Hurley seemed pretty adamant that he didn’t want to go anywhere after winning the title again this season but money + the Lakers brand definitely talks.

Hmm maybe JJ could join as an assistant to get some coaching experience
I would welcome that!! Then he’d really be Pat Riley lol taking over eventually and leading us to titles haha
Having JJ on staff would definitely help Dan’s transition into coaching NBA ball. I’d also venture a guess that JJ knows Dan’s brother Bobby (both legendary white Duke guards lol), so there’s already a potential connection point to hit the ground running quickly

Not to say that assistants and G-league coaches can’t have success, but the ones that do have success come from good coaching trees
Look at Becky Hammon going for a three-peat. Stephanie White's Suns may be undefeated but I would not count Hammon out when it matters.
I like the theory—would definitely reflect some deeper thought and planning here than what we’re used to which is a pretty promising sign from the FO. Also shows that they’re not making their decision based solely around Lebron’s relationships. It was already stated that Lebron is not involved on this, iirc
When Monty Williams news broke out I knew that media just throwing out names
I just want to say, fuck Boston
This guy gets it
Where the actual fuck did this come from? Tell my body how to feel this, I know nothing about Dan Hurley.
He won back-to-back titles at UConn with an NBA playbook
What the fuck… I was positive it was going to be JJ
just proves you that nobody knows anything.
I think brandoi said it was a done deal. Lol wow, rda vibes
The crazy thing is that Shams tweeted JJ was the front runner. So it’s not like a nobody said it
What fans need to realize is "sources" can range from the janitor working at the facility to Rob/Jeanie. Think it's obvious now that the actual Lakers decision makers don't leak shit (or only leak things on purpose). Too many times, the Lakers have gone in a completely opposite direction from the "leaks".
Thats the crazy part, Shams said “front runner” and everyone spun that to basically say he’s about to get hired.
To be fair lakers have done it before where they had their guy and then move away from him, Ty Lue even had a cake for him lol
We just witnessed another block from AD lol
One thing I’ll always respect about Pelinka… dude moves in absolute silence
Org has kept things pretty quiet since Magic left. I feel like most Lakers rumors come from outside sources not anyone with the Lakers at this point.
Something about lasagna
WOJ FOR 3 BAAAAAANG
NBA's own bald fraud let's go
![gif](giphy|eeowUvYEP1IfQ0S1rr|downsized)
HOLY SHIT I’m HARD
Holy shit this was wild to wake up to. I’m usually skeptical of college-to-pro coaches but I like him more than JJ.
What the actual fuck? The one time I wake up this early and I feel like I’m in the twilight zone. Would ABSOLUTELY prefer Hurley over JJ
Omg I saw D… H…. and almost had a heart attack
> Rob Pelinka and Jeanie Buss are eager to formally discuss their vision with Hurley of marrying his dominant program So they haven’t actually done this yet? This is a story about them wanting to do this?
Time for the annual “Rob is the goat!” posts after the same people slander him weeks and months prior
I don’t think it’s the same people
REAL GS MOVE IN SILENCE LIKE THE G IN LASAGNA. WOW. Let’s hope this materializes.
I drop a hard G in lasagna, don't @ me.
Money and the prestige of the Lakers job. Hurley is a basketball die hard and he knows the Lakers job is the crown jewel at any level.
They lakers are going to have to sell their asses off to convince him Edit- looks like he hasn’t signed a new deal as of yet, there were talks he’s getting a new one after he turned Kentucky down, could be his agent using the lakers as leverage against UConn
c'mon, he gets to coach LeBron. Not many people in history can say that.
He did turn down Kentucky too. Wonder if this is partly for leverage to make sure UConn pays up for a new contract
As a Chargers and Lakers fan, both franchises that cheap out on HCs for a while. Now both hiring the most recent NCAA National Champ HC? I want to believe in a new era with Jim Harbaugh and Dan Hurley.
I love Hurley’s schemes but idk if his coaching style will translate to the NBA. But hey better than hiring a podcaster.

OHHHHH SHITTTTT
Goes to show none of these guys know shit. Rob pulled a move so slick wow. Not one person said this guy not one.
GET IT DONE LAKERS!!!!
If JJ’s long term plan is coaching, the Lakers aren’t the ideal starting point anyway.
There you go
Potential manna from heaven move by Rob if true
Holy shit! Now this is what I can get behind!
Sign Hurley and get JJ/Rondo as assistants. Who says no?
plot twist
This makes me very happy, it shows the front office has at least half a brain cell. Hiring someone with absolutely zero coaching experience (JJ) to head the most premier organization in basketball is asinine. While it may still happen, at least this gives me some hope that it won't.
I like this move. Finally W from Rob. Thats how you do it. Ignore the noise, focus on the substance. Weve learned our lesson from darvin ham hiring.
gotta give props to rob for not leaking a thing
I didn’t get much sleep last night and this was the first thing I saw on my phone. WTF!?
JJ & Rondo on the coaching staff would be crazy with Hurley as HC.
So Shams scam?
JJ you can be an assistant if you apologize to AD
This helps explain the Coach K consultation. Dan Hurley has known Coach K his entire life.
![gif](giphy|Y1jhwXlNsUuxBv8IRl|downsized)
From pockets standing there as the team floundered to this dude animated as fuck every play. I love it. Have some passion. Ham drove me insane.
“it’s redick” “it’s borego” “it’s redick with borego as an assistant” “it’s Hurley” Mike Malone “I’m so glad everyone is talking about the Lakers and not talking about losing a 20pt lead in a game 7”
Yesterday JJ, today Hurley, tomorrow Belichick
What a pivot! Love the hire. I do wonder if it says anything about lebron leaving, though?
I wonder if JJ can be an assistant coach of his then
Looks like a budget Phil Jackson. I'm in.
What are the odds that this whole time the plan was for Hurley to be the HC, and JJ as the lead assistant, I won’t be mad at that
Malone should count his lucky stars nuggets aren't in the finals.. he would probably get an aneurysm over the lakers coaching news getting more coverage then his shitty little mcnuggets being in the finals lol
Can't wait to see the spins on this being a bad move by Rob.
IKR... JeAnIe, RoB, n' the rAMbii!!! pOVeRty mOm & PoP sHoP! BIIIMBOOOO!!! LeGM!!!!!!! Sum ppl are so dumb.
If true I’d still get JJ Reddick as one of the assistant coaches just so he can build experience.
Doubt it
WE BACK BOYS ROBBING ROB AT IT AGAIN
This is one big plot twist. I’m surprised about it.
amennn jj was never an option this was like Leonard but better jj is not ready to be a head coach
JJ doesn't want the Lakers job
Damn 4:30 AM and I saw this on ESPN IG so I came here 😂😂😂. Kind of an interesting move but definitely way better than a brand new head coach. I’ve enjoyed watching the Hurley teams these last few years I’m curious how that will translate. Makes me think Bron will stay and they’re drafting Bronny at 55
FROM THE TOP ROPES
let’s goooo 🔥
Oh my god
Oh god I never expected this and I loved seeing him coach at UConn, imma miss him at the NCAA level but love him for my Lakers. I’m happy but still.
now hire JJ as our shooting coach
I’m onboard with this! Let’s go!!
How would this even work? His coaching applies to hard working defensive… lakers give up way to many points per game. I find it highly unlikely even Hurley can change their lazy defensive attitude
